Pastor’s Notes A Modern Epiphany

Today we celebrate the Epiphany of our Lord Jesus Christ. The word epiphany means showing or manifestation. God wants to show us His face, and on this day He reveals Himself to us. He is truly the Messiah, the One coming to save.

We are familiar with the story of the Magi, astrologers from the east, who had seen a star rising and had followed it to Jerusalem to find the new born King. The three Wise Men had embarked on this Christian journey totally on faith – their only guide a star. They encountered many difficulties on this long trek, including the disappearance of the star; but they stayed on course and finally arrived at the house where they saw the Child with Mary, His mother. The Wise Men were overwhelmed with joy!

On December 7, 2014, Father Tony and I embarked on a journey to Rome – it was a modern day epiphany for both of us. In recognition of Father Tony’s 60th Anniversary of Ordination and in honor of his 60 years of active ministry as a priest, Pope Francis had invited Father Tony to concelebrate Mass with him in the Vatican on December 9. Our trek spanned thousands of miles and an ocean, and was accomplished in a modern airliner. We also were filled with joy when we saw the face of our Holy Father the Pope.

Our Holy Mother Church has been gifted with many good popes, chosen under the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit; and this Pope is one of the finest. We found in Rome a Pope who is living the Gospel. He is an embodiment of his namesake, St. Francis, who instructed his followers to “Preach the Gospel, and use words if necessary.”

Pope Francis is very pastoral. His mission is to reach all persons without regard to status; he is a champion of the poor and needy. In his encyclical Evangelli Gaudium, the Joy of Evangelization, he invites all Christians, everywhere, “to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ...no one is excluded from the joy brought by the Lord.”

Father Tony and I want to share with you, the parishioners of Holy Spirit, the profound joy we experienced in our modern day epiphany, when in the presence of Pope Francis, Jesus Christ’s representative as leader of His Church here on earth. We bring to you the best wishes of our Holy Father, and pass on to you his blessing: In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Epiphany of the Lord First Reading, Isaiah 60:1-6 (20ABC), In the first reading, the nations make their way to Jerusalem. They bring gifts to show their devotion to the Lord. Second Reading, Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6, In the second reading, we hear of the mystery of salvation. God has commissioned apostles and prophets to make known this mystery. Gospel, Matthew 2:1-12, In the Gospel, shepherds make known to all the amazing angelic revelation regarding Jesus. Mary calmly ponders all this in her heart.

Epiphany

“When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; and going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and

worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.” Matthew 2:10-12

“’Lumen requirunt lumine.’ These evocative words from a liturgical hymn for the Epiphany speak of the experience of the Magi: following a light, they were searching for the Light. The star appearing in the sky kindled in their minds and in their hearts a light that moved them to seek the great Light of Christ. The Magi followed faithfully that light which filled their hearts, and they encountered the Lord.” ~Pope Francis

What lights lead you to encounter the Lord? Are you a light that leads others to Jesus? May we reflect today on the wonders of how God works in our lives.

ANNOUNCEMENTS In regard to announcements, the office should be notified three weeks in advance. Announce-ments need approval, and they are limited before Mass. The proper place for announcements is in the bulletin. Those should be in the bulletin for several weeks before an event. Bulletin deadline is noon on the Monday before the weekend. Please do not give announce-ments to the priest or lector be-fore Mass and expect them to be said.

POLICY for SIGN-UPS & SALES

This is a reminder for all parish groups and organizations of the parish policy for announcements, sign-ups, and sales on weekends. Our policy is that there be no more that three sign-ups or sales on any given weekend in the Narthex / Gathering space. It is necessary to schedule the date at least 3 weeks previous to the desired weekend. Please, do not show up and ask for tables. The space must be used well, and there should not be an undue amount of solicitation or pressure on parishioners.
