McPhee Elementary and First Presby-
terian Church celebrated the 10th Anniversary
of its SPLASH event on Thursday, May 14th.
For 10 years volunteers from FPC have
worked with staff of the Community Learning
Center (CLC) which serves McPhee to put on
a fun learning event for kids and their families
to give them ideas for summer learning
activities. Last Thursday we had 26 volunteers
from FPC: Mary Lou Busch, Irene Colborn,
Joan Berglund, Virginia Knoll, Shirley Fugate,
Betty Tenhulzen, Jim & Marlene Wagner,
Jack & Shirley Cole, Nancy Field, LuEtta
Anderson, Steve Hastings, Arta Smith, Ron
Bump, Leslie Draper, Gary & Lynne Hughes,
Pam Boyle, Jo Peterson, Pat Jorn, Michele
Langer, Nancy & Bill Janike, and Jim & Pam
Carrier. Thank you to all the volunteers.
Thank you also to everyone who donated
books or funds to purchase books. Additional
financial support came from the investment
income of the Allhands Fund, a fund held by
the FPC Foundation created by a former
secretary of FPC in her will.
We had 205 students and family
members attending the event which featured
pizza and fruit parfaits for dinner. Activity
centers included: trail mix, magnetic fishing
for math facts where they received flash-
cards, reading where they received free
books donated by congregation members,
science where they learned about water (SPLASH continued on page 3)

Remembering World War II
D-Day, June 6, 1944
(Memories from Mildred Gardner)
In 1944 I was living at 333 N. 14th St. in Lincoln, NE
attending Summer School at the University of Nebraska. This
was the Presbyterian Student House. The first floor was a large
living room, dining room, kitchen, and an office for the
minister. Years later a chapel was built on the south end. The
second floor had a large living room for the minister, three
bedrooms and two baths. The third floor was two rooms and a
small room on the west that had a lavatory but no other
bathroom fixtures. Another girl and I lived up on this third
floor. No telephone. We didn’t really need an alarm clock
because the AST (Army Specialized Training) men were living
in the new Love Library on campus taking training. They
marched to the Student Union at 14th & R streets for meals.
Early in the morning their “HUT TWO, THREE, FOUR!”
woke us up!
We knew the invasion of France was coming but no one
knew when. The Minister’s Association decided they would
hold a short prayer service in the churches when this happened.
It would be early so people could participate before going to
work.
Dr. Arthur Miller was the minister at First Presbyterian at
17th & F Streets. Rev. Raymond Kearns was the Student Pastor
at the University and was an Associate Minister at First
Presbyterian. He, his wife, and little son Jackie lived on the
second floor of the Student House. Our job was to work an hour
a day doing “babysitting”, washing dishes, washing clothes and
ironing, and cleaning the house. We received our room and
breakfast in exchange for the work.
Dr. Miller and Rev. Kearns wanted a few days off, so
they had arranged to go to a cabin on the Big Blue River west
of Lincoln so they could rest and fish. The wives did not know
whose cabin this was. They didn’t really know exactly where
the men were.
There was a telephone in the hall on second floor of the
Student House. At 4:00 AM on June 6, 1944 we heard Mrs.
Kearns talking on the telephone. We wondered if Jackie was
sick or what was going on. Why was she on the phone at that
hour and why was she not using the telephone in their living
quarters?
So we went down to see and help. She told us she had a
call, it was D-Day. The ministers were needed but the wives
didn’t know where they were. She was calling people in the
church to find out whose cabin they were in. There was no tele-
phone in the cabin. But she found the name of a farmer near the
cabin and called him. The men needed to be back by 7:00 AM.
So we knew very early when D-Day was!
Then the robes the ministers wore had to be at the church.
That meant more telephone calls. Just before 7:00 AM a car
stopped at the Student House with the ministers. We told them
their robes were at the church. So they did get there on time!
At my 10 o’clock class the teacher said, “Would you
believe a girl in my 8 o’clock class didn’t know it was D-Day?”
She hadn’t listened to the news, hadn’t talked to anyone, and
didn’t know it had arrived.
It was truly the longest day. Would we be able to land and
not be pushed back into the sea? Did we know anyone in the
invasion? It was a long, prayerful day.

SPLASH 2015 continued from page 1 purification and received a butterfly net, writing where they
learned about renewing, recycling & reusing and received
tablets or construction paper, art where they made animals or
refrigerator magnets with bottle caps and received crayons or
markers, exercise where they were able to play with bubbles or
play hopscotch and received bubble solution and sidewalk
chalk, and music where they saw samples of instruments they
could make with trash and they made kazoos with tongue
depressors and straws. Additional stations provided information
about community resources.
SPLASH is the end of year activity to which FPC members
donate their time, energy and funds to support McPhee and its
students and families. Other activities during the year include
filling backpacks each week with food donated by the Food
Bank, donating items and time to the Holiday Gift Giveaway
providing kids with toys and clothing, helping students prepare
their science projects and judging at the annual Science Fair,
as well as donating time to help in the classrooms. Thank you
to all FPC members who participated this past year.
We are enriching the lives of children and families in our
neighborhood!

2015 Spring Fellowship Trip Story by Walt Schacht / Photos courtesy of Julie Van Meter
The Valentine area of the Nebraska Sandhills was the destination of the eighth annual Spring Fellowship Trip this year. Most of the 51 “Trippers” (41 adults and 10 children) left at noon on Friday, May 15 to begin our activity-packed trip that took us through Sunday, May 17. Water was the theme of our trip as expressed in Friday night’s short program, the stops and destination points of our weekend trip, and our worship service Sunday morning. This year, we stayed in cabins at the Niobrara River Ranch over-looking the Niobrara River, located 15 miles east of Valentine. Nature was in all of its splendor as our travel route had been blessed with ample rain and the prairies and woodlands were already green and the lakes, wetlands, and rivers were full to brimming. Although a wet weekend was the forecast, we were able to dodge rain and enjoy beautiful skies and warm temperatures on Friday and most of Saturday. We were awe-struck with incredible thunder storms Saturday night followed by light rain on Sunday.
Some of the highlights of the trip:
● We stopped at Victoria Springs State Recreational Area east of Anselmo in Custer Co. where we were greeted by Lisa McMillian of the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Lisa led us on a tour of an historic post office and house built of local eastern red cedar trees in the 1880s, the site of a popular resort in the early 1900s, and a “flowing well” that provided the water for the resort and a failed bottled water enterprise. Lisa also hosted us for a short visit of her family ranch located on the Middle Loup River north of Milburn in Blaine Co.. The McMillan family homesteaded in the area in the late 1800s and has relocated two log cabins in their backyard. The logs of one of the cabins were cut along the Dismal River in the 1880s and floated down the Dismal and the Middle Loup Rivers to the original cabin site.
● Because of wet road conditions, we weren’t able to take the Moon Lake road and picnic at the Rusty Star Ranch south of Johnstown. Instead, we toured the main street of Brewster (the smallest county seat in Nebraska – it’s unincorporated!) before eating at the city park behind the historic County Courthouse and down the street from the abandoned Doc Middleton’s Saloon.
● We drove from Johnstown to Norden Friday evening to the site of the 50,000-acre Fairchild fire along the Niobrara River in 2012. We visited the burn area during our Spring Fellow-ship Trip in 2013 with biologists and UNL students working for The Nature Conservancy. The Norden Road was muddy but we made it through and were able to see the recovering forests and woodlands of the Niobrara River Valley.
● Saturday morning started with a stop at the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge where we visited with wildlife biologist Mel Nenneman, took a hike, and climbed up to the second level of a former fire tower for a view of the Refuge’s Sandhills prairie and lakes.
● From the Snake River Fish Camp just north of Merritt Reservoir, we hiked into the Snake River canyon and viewed
June 2015/Volume 46, No. 6 5 First Presbyterian Church - “A place to belong!”
Snake River Falls with some of us climbing down the steep slopes to the base of the falls. The river was running full and the beauty and power of the falls was captivating.
● Because of the lack of trees, driving through the Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest from the east makes one wonder if the Forest entrance sign hasn’t been misplaced. We didn’t see any trees until we neared Steer Creek Camp-ground in the western part of the “Forest.” We had our picnic lunch in the Steer Creek Campground under the shade of ponderosa pine trees planted in the 1930s. Three UNL graduate and undergraduate students spoke to the group about the grassland bird ecology research they are conducting on private ranches, the Forest, and the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge.
● We learned much about the history, culture, and working environment of Sandhills ranching from John and Cheryl Ravenscroft. We visited their ranch located at the end of a trail (mail route) in the Broadwater River Valley and only 10 miles from Jumbo Valley Fen where we stopped a few years ago. Their large ranch headquarters and hospitality were remarkable, and we particularly enjoyed driving on their ranch road through a herd of cows (a.k.a., first-calf heifers) with new-born calves.
● We ended the Saturday tour with wine tasting at the Niobrara Valley Vineyard south of Nenzel and vinegar tasting at George Paul Vinegary in Cody. The Niobrara Valley Vine-yard has 4 acres of vines and a new tasting room where we sampled their wines while listening to Greg Nollette, owner with his wife Cindy, talk about their wines and the history of their vineyard. George Johnson and his daughter Emily hosted us for a unique tasting of their world-class vinegars in their vinegary, specially constructed of hay bales and stucco.
● Sunday morning, many “Trippers” went to Smith Falls which has the greatest drop of any waterfall in Nebraska. Even on a rainy, cool day, children enjoyed standing in the spray of the waterfall.
● Throughout the weekend we reveled in the fellowship of our interactive and spiritually-connected FPC “family”. Appropriately, Carol Ott Schacht read poetry and shared insights about learning to float in deep water being akin to the practice of finding our faith during our Friday night session when we gathered in Walnut cabin at the Niobrara River Ranch. The inspirational Sunday morning worship service of First Presbyterian Church “West” was led by Julie Van Meter and focused on the baptismal and healing elements of water through readings, music, and a brief, meaningful message. Jack Cole on the piano, Dianne Frydendall-Smith on the flute, and Meghan Kamran on the trumpet provided beautiful accompaniment for the service.
The Spring Fellowship Trip 2016 is scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend (May 27-30) and our destination is Fort Robinson! Because of the distance and countless things to do in the Fort Robinson area, we will take a 4-day trip in 2016, traveling to Fort Robinson on Friday and returning to Lincoln on Monday. While in the Fort Robinson area, we plan to include our traditional stops at ranches and natural resource areas as well as other activities like horseback riding, jeep rides, hiking, fishing, and fossil hunt-ing. We will stay at Fort Robinson and we would like everyone going on the trip to make reservations at The Lodge or one of the cabins.

Fort Robinson is a popular vacation spot, especially on Mem-orial Day weekend, and lodging reservations can be made one year in advance. We encourage you to make reservations on May 27 (or shortly thereafter) for nights of May 27, 28, and 29, 2016. The phone number for reservations is 308-665-2900 and the link for the Fort Robinson website is http://outdoornebraska.ne.gov/parks/guides/parksearch/showpark.asp?Area_No=77. Please let me, Carol, Julie, or Nate know when you reserve your room/s or cabin. We’re excited about our Ninth Annual Spring Fellowship Trip in 2016!

— MUSIC —
Join the Summer Choir & Bells This summer we will again have the summer choir and
summer bells too. Both are for not only those who have sung or
played before, but also for those who have never sung or rung
bells but would like to give it a try. The only rehearsals will be
on the Sunday morning before we play. We will meet at 9:15
AM and sing at the 10:00AM service (for the bell Sunday
please come at 9:00 AM to get set up).
The dates are Choir: May 31, June 7, June 14, June 21 and
Bells: June 28.
We will not wear robes; casual dress: dark pants/skirt, light
shirt. The music will be easy to learn in the short rehearsal time
before church. This is a great way for new people to give it a
try! It would be helpful for both groups, but especially for the
bell Sunday if you would let Brian Pfoltner know in advance if
you plan to come.
You—1PC congregation—are the sowers of the good seeds,
along with every other child of God!! Can you remember how
the good seed was first sown in your life? How were you aware
that it was taking root?
“The seed is the word of God… The good ground are they,
which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep
it, and bring forth fruit with patience.” (Luke 8:11, 15 KJV)
1PC has a seed… it has a vision for it's fruit! YOU are called
to cultivate that fruit at this year’s VBS! Christian Education
invites the entire congregation (not just the kiddos) to celebrate
this vision together at this year’s VBS July 10th, 11th and 12th,
Mark your calendars now!!
● July 10th—5:30 pm-8:00 pm with a grill-out meal, neigh-
borhood photo scavenger hunt, yoga and a campfire on the
courtyard.
● July 11th—10:00 am-12:30 pm with individual growth
workshops, mosaics, music, and sack lunches.
● July 12th—10:00 am-12:30 pm with photosynthesis talks,
parachute play, how to grow homegrown ingredients and a
Garden Party potluck.
Cultivating at VBS.....how will you share your gifts?
We need gardeners to cultivate:
● Artistic expression activities
● Team-building games
● Scientific exploration
● Musical presentations
● Encouraging servanthood
● Feeding our flock
● Developing individual growth
● Exploring our neighborhood
Contact Steph right away to let her know how you can help!!
