Priorities We are in a season of preparation known in many Christian traditions as

“Lent.” Lent is not a Biblical word; there is no specific exhortation in the Bible to prepare for Easter. But in the Bible, preparation usually involved fasting. This morphed into a far less rigorous practice that some traditions observe, ranging from meatless Fridays in Catholicism to people who give up alcohol, candy, etc. for Lent.

Personally, I give up nothing for Lent. It isn’t my tradition to do so. However, I think that times of spiritual reflection should lead to adding things to our lives – things that are truly important. Some of you are thinking: “I couldn’t possibly add one more thing!” Well, I’m going to ask you a simple question: are you in charge of your schedule, or is your schedule in charge of you? Dave Ramsey, the financial expert who created the Financial Peace University series we’ve offered so effectively, says: “I learned a long time ago that if I didn’t take control of my schedule and my money, they would always take control of me.”

In the Gospel of Matthew it is written: “Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear?' For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” – Matthew 6:31-33

Strive first for the kingdom of God. Priorities. Set your priorities properly, and everything falls into place. Why do our schedules take control of us? Why do we feel drained? Because we allow things that ought to be considered distractions or nuisances rise to the top of our to-do list.

Here’s an analogy: the Bible asks us to tithe our incomes. To give 10% of our income away. Off the top. Before anything else. But most people don’t, and the reason you hear most often is that they don’t because they don’t have enough “left over.” Left over? That’s the opposite of “off the top.” Tithing means you budget from the tithe down. You start with 10% off the top, then you build the rest of your budget with the rest of your money. You start with your most important responsibility and work your way down.

Can I be blunt? If God isn’t #1 on your priority list, then I can’t really help you. If God isn’t #1 on your priority list then you’ll get to live with the

ramifications of this. I am certainly not saying that God will punish you. God doesn’t have to. God told us the best way to order our lives, and failure to heed God’s word will have natural consequences. When we build our schedules by letting less important things rise to the top, it has natural consequences. We feel drained and unfulfilled.

Your schedule needs to start with God. And that means more than worship. It means worship and service. It means being refreshed in worship and then spending some of ourselves in service to the church and the world.

If you want to spend some time reflecting on what it would mean to reorder your priorities and unclutter your soul, read about the Simplify series (written by Bill Hybels) that we’re offering on Thursday evenings in March. And if you can’t commit to four Thursdays, join us for a single 90-minute “condensed” Simplify experience on Sunday, March 29 at 4:00, just before Crossroads.

King Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes 2:10-11 – “Whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them; I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart found pleasure in all my toil, and this was my reward for all my toil. Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had spent in doing it, and again, all was vanity and a chasing after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.” In other words, he pursued all the earthly pleasures he could. And as a king, those were many. But at the end of the day, he realized that he was “chasing after wind.”

Spend some time reordering your priorities. God. Family. In that order. Get your soul uncluttered, and as Bill Hybels writes, move from exhausted to energized; from restless to fulfilled; from anxious to peaceful.

From the Choir Room

EASTER CHOIR It’s not to soon to start preparing for out beautiful Holy Week and Easter services. Anyone who is interested in joining the choir for the Lent/Easter season is invited to join us every Sunday at 9:30 for choir rehearsal in the choir room. Light refreshments are provided. Consider singing in the choir as your Lenten service

offering. All are welcome!

90 SECOND SERMON Check out the 90 Second Sermon – a brief, engaging version of the sermon being produced each week by Rich and Kellie. Well-suited for sharing with friends via email or Facebook, we hope you’ll find it interesting not just for yourself but as a way to start faith conversations

with friends and family. Access the videos from our preliminary website at www.90secondsermon.com.

CROSSROADS Come and check out the CROSSROADS contemporary worship that meets every Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. in the Chapel. It’s casual, lively, and fun, with a great band and the same basic sermon as Sunday morning (with multimedia enhancements). It’s a great alternative – give it a try and invite your friends!

EASTER BRASS Once again we need to raise funds to underwrite the cost of the extra musicians and instruments for Good Friday and Easter. Contributions are requested to defray the cost of the trumpets, trombones and timpani that uplift our Easter services, and the violin, cello and oboe for Good Friday Tenebrae. If you would like to offer one of the instruments in memory of a loved one, please see David Macfarlane for more information.

THE LABYRINTH OPEN DURING LENT ON MARCH 13TH AND 15TH Come, take time to walk, rest, relax, meditate, and pray during Lent when the labyrinth is

open on Friday, March 13 from 4 – 7 p.m. and again on Sunday, March 15 from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Individuals and families are invited to spend some quality time walking the winding

path, a metaphor for life with its twists and turns, and sometimes a change of direction. There will be some Spirituality Centers in the East Room where you can write your prayer concerns or ways to express your thoughts during Lent.

YOUTH ACTIVELY SERVING IN MISSION: "Thank you for everybody who donated to this important cause and for getting others to donate as well on Halloween. UNICEF is an amazing foundation that helps provide health care, clean water, nutrition, and much more to children all around the world. With the help from the $150.00 we donated we are helping UNICEF to accomplish their goal of providing basic needs to children everywhere. Thank you again for all you help!" Emily Kahn, Project Manager

Ilta Schulzrinner, Project Manager, reports that the offering for SOUPER BOWL OF CARING was $442.00! This benefits homeless families in our area through hosting them here at the church for 3 weeks a year and for camp scholarships for children and youth.

Thank you very much for your generous offering!

10 youth and parents will help pack 10,000 meal packages at STOP HUNGER, NOW! at the Presbytery Youth Event held on February 28. This provides up to 60,000 meals where most needed in the world. What an incredible mission and we thank our youth and parents for helping to make this happen along with 90 other youth from our churches.

SUNDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY Sunday Mornings at 10:00 a.m. in the East Room

We really encourage you to try the SUNDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY each week. In this study we review the text that forms the basis of the sermon that day, illuminating issues of history, context, and translation that affect the interpretation of the story into a message for us. You’ll understand more of the background that undergirds the sermon in a setting where you get to know some of your fellow worshippers better.

The FIRST THURSDAY study group will meet on Thursday, March 5 at 10:00 a.m. in the East Room. Please join us for an interesting and enlightening time as Rev. Hong leads us in a study and discussion of a look at eschatology, or our view of the “end times”, and how this impacts our world.

Each week we will have a brief worship followed by fellowship around a simple meal of hearty soups and bread. Soup makers are needed!

SIMPLIFY: A FOUR-WEEK CONNECT GROUP Thursday evenings March 5, 12, 19, and 26, 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the East Room or the Meeting Room

Today’s velocity of life can consume and control us . . . until a breakneck pace begins to feel normal and expected. When we spend our lives doing things that keep us busy but don’t really matter, we sacrifice the things that do. What if your life could be different? What if you could be certain you were living the life God called you to live? If you crave a simpler life anchored by the priorities that matter most, this four-week Connect Group experience is for you. Simplified living requires more than just cleaning out your closets or reorganizing your desk drawer. It requires uncluttering your soul. By eradicating the stuff that leaves your spirit drained, you can stop doing what doesn’t matter—and start doing what does. SIMPLIFY was written by Bill Hybels, founding pastor of Willow Creek Community Church, one of the largest

churches in America, and it identifies the core issues that lure us into frenetic living—and offers practical steps for sweeping the clutter from our souls. This 90-minute Simplify ‘Extra’ will feature an overview and highlights to help you in your faith journey. In this four-session Connect Group experience, Rev. Hong, using video teaching from Bill Hybels, helps us learn to focus on what matters. We recommend that participants purchase a copy of SIMPLIFY. Copies are available through the church for $15. Light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to Rich at [email protected] so we can order sufficient books. And if your schedule keeps you from attending the regular Thursday Simplify sessions, join us for a Simplify ‘Extra’ program on Sunday, March 29th from 4:00 p.m. until Crossroads begins at 5:30 p.m.

LIVE BOLDLY: A LENTEN SERMON SERIES Our core values at FPC are to LIVE BOLDLY, SHARE BOUNDLESSLY, GROW COMMUNITY, and help BUILD GOD’S WORLD. During March, Rev. Hong will preach a sermon series that explores ways in which we can LIVE BOLDLY. We will look at how to LIVE BOLDLY in four ways: to move forward even through suffering (Mark 8:31-38, March 1); to stand apart from the norms of the world

(1 Corinthians 1:18-25, March 8); to look courageously at our own lives (John 3:14-21, March 15); and to boldly glorify God in our daily living (John 12:20-33, March 22). We hope you’ll make a special effort to attend and invite a friend.

EASTER IS COMING Despite the piles of snow on the ground and the frigid temperatures we experienced in February, EASTER IS COMING. We have TWO identical celebrations of Easter on Sunday, April 5, at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. (Crossroads does not meet on Easter.) Also remember that our deeply moving Service of Tenebrae is on Good Friday, April 3, at 8:00 p.m.

ECO-PALMS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP & FAIR TRADE Why do we use eco-palms on Palm Sunday? The harvest of palm fronds is an important income source for many tropical families and communities. The way that they are harvested makes a huge difference in protecting the valuable natural forests by cutting only the fronds. More than half of the farmers in Guatemala earn income by harvesting palm fronds which do not destroy the entire plant so the palm plants can reproduce several times in a year.

ROSETTA VOLUNTEERS FOR VALENTINE'S DAY GIFT WRAPPING FUNDRAISER FOR HABITAT

“While wrapping gifts at Barnes & Noble, a young girl came up to the table. She was probably 5 years old. Her mother was keeping a watchful eye on her while she was perusing a gift. The young girl saw the clear jar with money in it and asked me what it was for. I told her about Habitat for Humanity and said that the money was to help with their projects.

The young girl turned to her Mom and said that she would like to put money in the jar to help build a house for someone who needed one. Her Mom asked her if she had money and her daughter replied that she did. The young girl took all the money from her pocket, counted it and put it all in the jar. She then said in an excited and proud voice, "Mom, I put $105.00 in the jar to help build a home for someone who needs one!" At first "Mom" said that's nice and then quickly asked again how much she put in... her daughter replied "$105.00". Then her Mom looked at me and I reassured her that it was $1.05 in assorted coins that her daughter had removed from her own pocket.

I thought this was so cute, funny and rewarding all at the same time. She was excited to help those in need and gave up everything she had to do it. Indeed, I felt like she did put $105 in the jar.” -Rosetta Forshee
