ON THE WAYwith Dr. David Swanson

    Give thanks to the

    Lord for He is good;

    His love endures

    forever.

    -Psalm 118:1

    Dear FPCO Family and Friends,

Lloyd Ogilvie, the longtime pastor ofHollywood Presbyterian Church andformer Chaplain of the United StatesSenate, was the speaker one year for aconference I was directing in Montreat,North Carolina. I had not followed hislife very closely other than the afore-mentioned credentials, but when Ipicked him up from the airport, I learnedthat his wife died only months earlier.

It was obvious that he was grievingdeeply. He carried an edge of sadnessthat seemed to leak from his counte-nance. Even so, he had flown acrossthe country to preach four messages inthree days on the promises of God.Trying to reconcile how he was goingto do that, I asked, With all that you are

going through right now, how do youmuster the courage and the energy topreach as you will this week? His an-swer has stuck with me ever since. Hesaid, David, I have found the antidoteto grief is gratitude. Being grateful forall God gave to me through my wife, celebrating those memories and reflect-ing on His blessings, these are what getme through the day and enable me toserve. They dont take away the pain, but they allow me to live in it such thatI can bear witness to the Lord and His

    faithfulness.

While I have never known the depth ofpain he was experiencing at that time, Ihave learned the truth of what he said.Gratitude is a marvelous, God-givencommand that serves as an antidote tomany of the pains and burdens of thislife. Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 5:18,Give thanks in all circumstances, for

this is Gods will for you in Christ Jesus.David wrote in Psalm 118:1, Give thanksto the Lord for He is good; His loveendures forever. God commands us togive thanks in all things for in doing so,we remember His goodness and love.We reorient our lives to what is true. Wegain a different perspective. We seethrough a new lens.

As we enter into a season of Thanksgiv-ing leading to the later celebration ofChrists birth, I would encourage youto be intentional about this. Ive evenseen a thankfulness challenge onFacebook. Im not saying you have todo that, but try something simple. Starteach day by prayerfully thanking Godfor two things. End the day the sameway. And if they involve people, tellthem. I think youll be blessed and en-

couraged by how your heart responds, and the blessing you will be to others.

As always, my list of thanksgivings fol-lows in this issue, not the least of whichis my sincere gratitude for the 10 yearsof ministry you have granted me in serv-ing with you. You are a true joy to myheart, and I love you.

    Arising and Building,

Te Advent season is upon us, which means Christmasis sure to ollow again this year! We have a significantopportunity to reach out to riends, neighbors, andco-workers and invite them to an original Christmasmusical production, Te Missing Gif. Involving

a ull stage set with actors, choir, and orchestra, thisyears Christmas production ollows the story o awidower who comes to live with his son and amily. An unusual occurrence takes him to the doorway oheaven, where he is joined by several other interestingcharacters who are also waiting or their meeting withGod. It is at this point something very unique happens.

Tere are beautiul orchestrations and amiliar Christ-mas music including the much loved Mary, Did YouKnow? Tough much more involved, it is similar to

last years Hear the Light, a musical leading the audi-ence to think about their own lives in relation to theLord. Tis production or the whole amily is filledwith humor as well as serious thought. We have re-written it or First Pres, but we did this same pieceyears ago when I was in Boston or 14,000 people overtwo week-ends. Te Missing Gif is a great way toopen the door or those people you know who maynever come on a Sunday morning, sharing the gos-pel in a winsome, real-lie way. Bring your riends! I

encourage you to think o ways you might use an eventlike this to reach out to those around you who need toknow the love o Christ. One memorable example Iveseen is o a man purchasing 60 tickets or all o those inhis office, and hosting an open-house dessert in their

    home aferwards.

In a very practical way, Te Missing Gif is anothereffort to contribute to the building o Christs Kingdomin downtown Orlando. We invite and encourage youto be a part o what God is doing. I you would like tobe a part o the production team, email me at [email protected] call 407.423.3441 x1274.

With a career at Te Christ School(CS) spanning over 19 years and astrong aith in God, Gina Wiborg,CS Athletic Director, confidently

ollows the path God has set or her.

Growing up, I never would haveguessed that this would be my jour-ney, says Gina. Beore I had mychildren, I worked in Young LieChildrens Ministry and believedthat would be where Id stay.

When God led my husband andme to Orlando, we were searching

or a church. I didnt know it, butmy college roommates husband,Ed Bonner, was the youth ministerat First Pres, says Gina. We gotinvolved in the church. We wantedto start an exercise class or youngmoms through First Pres. So, witha degree in Physical Education, Iwas asked to lead the class. Whenmy children were born, I becameinvolved with the Youth Ministry.

Ten, when the Clayton Lie Center(CLC) was built, I began workingor the recreation ministry as theaerobic coordinator. It was perector me; I worked there, and mychildren attended the WeekdaySchool.

When CS opened in 1996, omPorter, Founding Principal, asked

Gina to join CS to teach PE.

With every grade level that wasadded at CS, Gina taught more

classes. When middle school wasadded, she was asked to work ull-time as the Athletic Coordinator. We elt that the greatest PE needor our school was to have a varietyo athletic opportunities or ourmiddle school students, she ex-plains. God had provided us with acourt with the building o the CLC,so we started with basketball, vol-leyball and soccer. When Dr. Jason

Powell came on board as Head oSchool, we added lower school toour organized sports program.

Gina continues, Even thoughalmost all o our coaches at CShave been volunteers, I have neverhad to worry about getting coaches.Tey were always there. God hasprovided the expertise, and some-one who was ready to lead children.

I always hear other schools com-ment on how awesome our coachesare. Tey are so great because Godcalled them.

CS is my call, she says, proudly.I love it here. Im here becauseGod continues to hold me here.Whether we win or lose a sportingevent makes no differenceits look-

ing at class afer class that leavesCS, and seeing what they do inhigh school and beyond. God hasgrown these wonderul people into

    His servants.

My spiritual journey started in the all o 2005 whenmy riend, Ninette, insisted that I needed to visit herBible group and I had run out o excuses. So, I de-

cided to accept her invitation. My plan was to show upbriefly and leave as ast as possible. Tat afernoon, Ienjoyed listening to the word o God and the messageo peace and comort. I started attending her weeklyBible group and also joined other womens groups atour church which led to me accepting Jesus into myheart on April o 2006.

I constantly reached out to the Lord asking him to giveme wisdom as I had challenging moments with mythen 4- and 2-year-old boys. But it wasnt until 2008that He showed me what a real challenge was. Ourthird boy was due November o 2008. It was Christ-mas time and I had the holidays figured out; presentsbought, house decorated and a list o events to attend. However, the Lord had other plans. Baby Camilo wasborn just fine but as I sat up rom the bed, my headexploded in pain with a severe headache.

Doctors inormed me that the epidural had created aleak o spinal fluid causing the headache. Tey advisedbed rest but my condition got complicated and I was

admitted to ICU with a subdural hematoma. Duringmy first night in ICU and being away rom my new-born, I was very angry at God. I asked him why me?

Why at this moment, when it was supposed to be thehappiest time in my lie? I decided I didnt want to bein communication with Him anymore and I shut thedoor to my riendship with Him. Tis was not the righttime to teach me about pain.

Months afer this injury, I was still having episodeso headaches and dizziness. I knew something waswrong. Afer visiting several neurologists and spend-ing three days at the Mayo Clinic, the doctors oundnothing. Tey wanted to experiment with medicationsand also asked me to be patient and give it some time.Seeing no improvement and running out o treatmentoptions, I elt very sad and rustrated.

A riend mentioned the word acupuncture andgave me the number or her acupuncturist. I was veryskeptical to try this therapy, but willing to explore myoptions. I made an appointment, started treatment andafer several sessions my symptoms improved and theheadaches were gone.

Faithfulness a powerful word in a Christians lifeyet the mere act of obedience and steadfastness to be

    faithful, daunting!

Te Arise and Build Campaign has given us permis-sion to take a look back, to reflect upon the ministry

vision o the aithul leaders and members o this greatchurch and hopeully, inspired us to look orward tothose who are yet to come.

Faithulness a promise o support. Our oundingchurch athers, a small community o believers, knewthat being aithul to God and their call to establish a

church would require support. Support that startedwith the inception o this church and a requirementthat has remained throughout our 138 year history a legacy we get to continue!

Faithulness - honoring our commitments. An obli-gation to ulfill a promise and sometimes not alwaysconvenient! Without a doubt, those that came beoreus in leadership roles or as members ulfilling a finan-cial promise, or offering precious resources such as

time and gifs, have built a oundation o aithulness. We now benefit and God is pleased! Being aithul is a

lielong task that requires continual effort and yet a lieull o aithulness is a rich lie indeed.

Faithulness kingdom rewards! As you consideryour investments in Gods kingdom, pray how you andyour amily will continue to build on the solid ounda-tion we know today. Faithulness, paired with love, strengthens ministry in a tangible way that we may notwitness in our lietime, but the generations to comewill be able to look back, find us aithul and offerthanks or our steadastness o support and honoring

    our commitments!

In closing, make time to be in prayer to seek Godsguidance on ways you can be aithul to Him and Hispeople. What are ways you can offer support in minis-try vision that will gloriy God? How can aithulnesshelp us to live a godly lie? How do the practical ben-efits o aithulness motivate you to be a more aithulperson to God and to your riends?

making spiritual disciplines a daily habit

    TIME WITHGOD

Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your

neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor

and a good name in the sight of God and man. Proverbs 3:3-4
