I Appeal to You, Brothers and Sisters I’m honored and humbled by your call to serve as your pas-tor. I’m excited and energized for the ministry that lies ahead. But I’d also like to raise a point of personal privilege. Please pray for me. Pray for me, Alissa, Levi, and our sec-ond son who’s on-the-way. Pray that we will be given bold-ness to proclaim the gospel, sheltered from the devil’s at-tacks, and filled with the love that blossoms into faithfulness. I need this from you. Does this strike you as an odd request? We modern prag-matists are so easily tempted to think, “Why waste time on prayer?” Shouldn’t we just get busy? One super-achiever was the Apostle Paul. He founded churches across Asia and Europe. He nurtured new believ-ers. He raised up a second generation of leaders. He crys-tallized a significant portion of Christian doctrine in his many letters. What an amazing and accomplished man! And yet, a quick survey of Paul’s writings reveals a strange obsession with prayer. Throughout his writings Paul both talks about prayer and actually prays right in his letters. And Paul not only prays for his congregations, he repeatedly asks for their prayers. Think of it. Mighty Paul! Asking for prayer!

He’s unashamed in his asking. “Pray that I may declare the gospel boldly” (Eph. 6:20). “Beloved, pray for us” (I Thess. 5:25).

“Pray for us, so that the word of the Lord may spread and be glorified everywhere” (II Thess. 3:1). “I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in earnest prayer to God on my behalf…that my ministry…may be acceptable” (Rom. 15:30-1). “Join in helping us by your prayers” (II Cor. 1:11). And more!

Why was successful Paul so fixated on prayer? Because he knew that real, lasting, and spiritually meaningful ‘success’ is “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, says the LORD of hosts (Zech. 4:6). Friends, the simple truth – the truth that Paul clearly recognized and acted upon – is that without the empowerment of God’s grace and life-bringing Spirit all our human ‘doings’ are fruitless. Even those things which look like ‘effective ministry’ are ultimately unproductive if Christ is not working therein. And that’s the last thing I want for myself or for you. So as we begin this new relationship please pray for me, the ministry here at First Presbyterian, and my family. - Pastor Andrew

First Annual Fall Supper & Raising the Roof Project

Our church’s building is unique and we want to preserve

its beauty and strengthen our church family. That is why we are

“Raising the Roof.” Our church will be holding the first annual fall supper on

Sunday, October 28th from 4:30 to 7:00 PM. This will be a tur-

key dinner with all the trimmings, a silent auction and games for

the kids.

This is a family event! Bring your family and friends. On

an average we have 130 people attend lunches and events, so we

challenge you to bring 4 family members or friends with you to

this event. We will have games for the kids and child-care for

small children of the workers.

To include the shut-ins we want to deliver a meal to each

and every-one of them. We can do this by having members

sponsor a meal for them. Sponsor a shut-in by getting us their in-

f o r m a t i o n a n d b u y i n g t h e m a t i c k e t .

We have already had some donations for the silent auc-

tion, but we are hoping to have more. If you would like informa-

tion on the silent auction please contact one of us.

We aim to serve at least 500 people and raise $5,000.00 This is a

high bar and we can’t reach it by ourselves! So sign-up in the

East Room and take some tickets to sell.

Make sure you check out our progress each week on our “Raising

The Roof” display in the east room. Please contact Stephanie

Myers at 354-0473 or Deb VanOverschelde at 350-4491 with

any questions.

The cost of the roof, sound and video projects to-

tals approximately $157,000.00. $40,461.08 (26%) has been con-tributed toward these projects–You may contribute by noting for roof and/or sound on your gift.

Another look back at the PW 2012 Churchwide Gathering

The theme of the Churchwide Gathering of Presbyterian Women was “The River of Hope.” The theme scripture was Psalm 46:4-5 (NRSV): “There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns.” I loved the creative way the images of water ran through the whole program. Our days began at 8 a.m., with “splashes of joy” at morning devotions. The exhibits, Presbyterian Bookstore, and Global Marketplace where called the “Hope River Wharf.” Our forums were called “diving deeper” and our workshops were “anchors of hope.” In our seven plenary sessions, we explored the themes of The River of God, The River is Deep, The River is Wide, The River is Life, and The River is Hope. Our Gathering offering of $40,000 will be used to build 20 wells in South Sudan. Two of the 20 wells were for a hospital that P.W. helped build with a previous Thank Offering Grant. It isn’t ALL worship and workshop though. There was a craft lounge, PW scrapbooking, a tweetup(?) — conversation and camaraderie, whether you communicate in 140-character tweets or not (I don’t). You’ll just have to see it to believe it! Come and experience a mini-churchwide gathering at the PW Gathering Thursday Nov. 15th in Fellowship Hall at 1:30 P.M. All women are invited. -Sandy Weil Fisher

Michael & Tara

Eggleston

Less than a year ago Michael and Tara Eggleston moved to the peaceful country-side where their children could romp in the outdoors. Mi-chael was born to Scott and Jennifer Eggleston. Scott is the safety and maximo coordinator at Huron Wheat Growers and Jennifer is the manager of the Elks. The family lived near Virgil and Michael

graduated from Wolsey High School. He then attended MTI where he became a medical lab technician. He now works for HRMC. He has two sisters and a brother. Stephanie is a teller at American Bank and Trust and has a daughter, Aubree who is one. Kimberly and Derek Wipf have two sons and a daughter, Teagen, age two, A.J. age five and Ashlyn who is seven. Kimberly is currently attending Dakota Wesleyan University. Michael’s brother, Patrick, attends school at SDSU. Tara was born in Watertown to Ken and Nancy Shoultz. Ken works for the State Fair, in the maintenance department, while Nancy is the cashier at Buchanan School. Tara gradu-ated from Huron High School and drives to DeSmet where she works for Legend Seeds as the Assistant Distribution Manager. Her brother, Josh, works for Northwestern in Aberdeen. Tara and Michael have three children. Kailynn, age seven, attends 2

nd grade at Madison school. Morgan, age five attends kinder-

garten at Buchanan School. Rylan is two. All of the children go to Sunday School while Kailynn is also in Logos.

The girls take dancing classes. You will see them singing in the children’s choirs at church. Tara has assisted with Sunday School. Michael and Tara enjoy horse back riding, playing soft-ball, hunting and camping with their family in various places in South Dakota. Now they are also busy attending their kids’ sports, T-Ball and Coach Pitch. During the winter snowmobi-ling is a source of recreation.

Parade of Lights & Event Center Christmas Tree

Help needed!

Last year the FPC had a small float in the parade, however we would like to continue that tradition by entering a larger float to share with the city of Huron the great things happening at FPC of Huron! We need volunteers and a chair-person for the float. If there is enough interest we will have an organizational meet-ing. We also had a tree at the Crossroads–volunteers for decorations for that are needed. The parade is November 23, the tree can be put up after Dec. 1st.
