MORNING WORSHIP SERVICE
Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Jazz Sunday, September 29, 2019, 10:00 AM
COMMUNITY PRELUDE: “We Are Marching in the Light of God”
South African hymn
People are invited to follow the musicians into the church at 10:00 a.m.
for worship.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
CALL TO WORSHIP: (written by Rev. Maren Tirabassi)
Leader: Let us rejoice, for morning has dawned. A new day has been
born, and we are newly alive to enjoy it.
People: We know the beauty of God’s creation and the wonder of
the human family. We remember those whose love has
shaped our lives and those whose struggle for justice has
been unsleeping even in nighttimes of loneliness.
Leader: We gather in our church to worship God, to share prayers and
gifts, to pledge ourselves to God’s work in the world.
People: May God bless us, so that what we do in this time together
may be honest, sacred, and filled with hope.
*HYMN: “Morning Has Broken” PH #38 blue
OPENING PRAYER: in unison (from Touch Holiness)
O God, our joy and our comfort, we gather in your name to give thanks
for all the gifts of this day. Our spirits abound with your gift of joy. Of
all the many things we have received from your hand, the flame of joy is
the most precious. We have also come to this hour of prayer bearing in
our hearts the sorrows of our world. Comfort us with your presence that
we may be strengthened to continue to proclaim your goodness and
deliverance in all the earth; through Jesus Christ our Savior we pray…
THE LORD'S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on
earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we
forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever. Amen.
*GLORIA PATRI: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is
now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen
MORNING PRAYER
Pastoral Prayer Silent Prayer
Rather than starting our prayer time with sharing “joys and
concerns,” there will be an opportunity in the middle of the prayer
for individuals in the congregation to speak out loud (or whisper
silently in their hearts) the names of people or situations they wish
to lift up to God in prayer. ANTHEM: “Jump for Joy” by Duke Ellington & Paul Webster
Arr. Matt Richard
Rebecca Shrimpton & Jazz Band
Hey, fare thee well Land o' Cotton
Cotton lisle's out of style, Jump for Joy
Don't you grieve, Little Eve, all the hounds
I do believe, have been killed
Ain't you thrilled? Jump for Joy
Have you seen pastures groovy?
Green pastures was just a technicolor movie
Hey, when you stomp up to heaven and you see ol' Saint Pete
Tell the boy to Jump for Joy
Step right in, give Pete some skin and Jump for Joy
SCRIPTURE READING:
Nehemiah 8:9-12 (from The Message, a modern paraphrase) 9 Nehemiah the governor, along with Ezra the priest and scholar and the Levites who were
teaching the people, said to all the people, “This day is holy to GOD, your God. Don’t weep
and carry on.” They said this because all the people were weeping as they heard the words of
The Revelation. 10
He continued, “Go home and prepare a feast, holiday food and drink; and share it with
those who don’t have anything: This day is holy to God. Don’t feel bad. The joy of GOD is
your strength!” 11
The Levites calmed the people, “Quiet now. This is a holy day. Don’t be upset.” 12
So the people went off to feast, eating and drinking and including the poor in a great
celebration. Now they got it; they understood the reading that had been given to them.

CALL TO OFFERING
OFFERTORY ANTHEM: “Lovely Day”
By Skip Scarborough & Bill Withers
Adapted/arr. Rebecca Shrimpton
Choir & Jazz Band; Rebecca Shrimpton & Paul Knox, soloists
When I wake up in the morning, Lord, and the sunlight hurts my eyes
When something without warning, Lord, bears heavy on my mind
Then I think of you, and the world's alright with me
Just one thought of you, and I know it's gonna be
A Lovely Day
When the day that lies ahead of me seems impossible to face
When someone else instead of me always seems to know the way
Then I think of you, and the world's alright with me
Just one thought of you, and I know it's gonna be
A Lovely Day
*DOXOLOGY: Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise God all creatures here below, Praise God
above ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

WEEKLY BIBLE STUDY Thursdays, 4:00 to 5:30 at
the home of Vin Terrill, 37 Beach Street In
keeping with our usual practice, we will be studying the
scripture texts for the following Sunday’s
worship. Format of the study is as follows: we begin with sharing joys
and concerns, we have a time of prayer (where people are free to pray
silently or out loud), and then 2 volunteers read the text out loud, while
we all notice which words the Spirit draws our attention to. (This way of
reading Scripture is called “Lectio Divina.”) We each have the
opportunity to share with others the words “speak” to us, as well as ask
questions about the text. We also discuss how the text might apply to our
lives today. The study is led by Rev. Marlayna. All are welcome to join
us! Email or call Rev. Marlayna for more information.
“MAKING SENSE OF THE CROSS” BOOK
DISCUSSION GROUP In the introduction to his book,
“Making Sense of the Cross,” Luther Seminary Professor
David Lose raises many questions, including these: “How
should we regard the cross? Is it a sad tragedy that we
should grieve? Is it the moment of God’s victory and
redemption that we should celebrate?...what kind of God would require
such a gruesome death to achieve redemption?” And then he says, “By
the time you are done [reading this book], you should not only
understand what other Christians have said about the cross, but also
what you believe about this central symbol and element of our faith.” If
you have ever asked any of these questions and haven’t quite yet found
answers that are completely satisfactory, you might enjoy exploring this
book with your fellow church members. Rev. Marlayna will be leading
a 6 week book discussion group on Saturday mornings from 10:30 to
11:45 starting on Saturday, October 5th and running through Saturday,
November 2nd. Please talk with Rev. Marlayna if you are interested in
attending.
