Generosity”. What does it mean to experience God’s generosity and to give with generous hearts? These are questions that will engage our sense of disciple ship and invite us to grow in the sharing of gifts for ministry. We are looking forward to this three year period being a time of intentional growth in
disciple ship and generosity.
Our Kick-Off Sunday for “First, We Give of Ourselves: Giving in Grace” will be Sunday, October 12. Our fall emphasis will culminate with a celebration of ministry and the sharing of commitments of how we can “give of ourselves” in ministry on Sunday,
November 23.
An important element of this emphasis is a Bible Study entitled “Giving in Grace”. We will be using this Bible Study in Adult Sunday School October 12 through November 2, as well as in our women’s and men’s groups. We invite you to be a part of these
conversations.
Plan to be on hand in worship and join a “Giving in Grace” Bible Study this fall as we consider together how, “First, We Give of Ourselves”. How exciting it will be to grow together in discipleship
and the joy of generosity.
October 26 we will celebrate Reformation Sunday and we will also join with the Methodist and Baptist churches in sponsoring “Trunk or Treat” from 1-3 PM. Be sure to join us Pastor Bruce
Exciting events and grace filled days are happening at First Lutheran Church! Because of you, your
family, and our congregational family, the gospel is eing boldly proclaimed and the joy of God’s grace in Christ is celebrated in marvelous ways. Indeed, through our ministry together, countless lives are being touched with the love of
Christ.
As we look ahead to ministry as a family of faith at First Lutheran Church, we are embarking on an initiative that will help us grow in ministry and ways we can bring connections with people and Christ. This initiative is a three year discipleship and generosity growing opportunity for the whole congregation. Our ministry initiative is called “First, We Give of Ourselves”. This emphasis will be a celebration of our ministry and growing in the delight of God’s grace. As we consider the gift of grace in Christ, we will also explore the joy of
our giving in grace.
This fall, the focus of “First, We Give of Ourselves” will be “Giving in Grace”. We will explore together, the wonderful gift of God’s grace in Christ and how it is the foundation of our discipleship and giving. Then in the fall of 2015, our focus will center around the second facet of our ministry initiative, “Giving in Gratitude”. We will explore the spiritual nature of gratitude and how it encourages us to give of ourselves in response to God’s grace in Christ. Then, in the fall of 2016, we will follow through with the focus of “Giving in

GREAT TIME HAD BY ALL AT THIS YEARS ANNUAL CHURCH BBQ! Your Property Committee would like to thank everyone that helped make this year's BBQ
fellowship event a fun and successful evening. We served more than 300 dinners prepared
by 5 B's and enjoyed wonderful piano music provided by our own Laron Hafenrichter.
Thanks to many of you, we were able to raise over $900 to support some of the off budget
facilities expenses. The Committee would like to express our appreciation to all the folks
that supported the event through advertising, selling tickets, serving meals,
working prior to and during the dinner, the clean up volunteers and those
who just came to enjoy a wonderful evening of fun. A special word of
"thanks" to our secretary Ann Hagemann who helped to keep us organized
and also printed and assembled the BBQ tickets. Property Committee
Thank you from WELCA! Thank you to all the women of the church who donated homemade pies for the annual church BBQ. We received approximately 15 pies and we were able to raise $138 through this fundraising event to benefit WELCA. The funds will be used to help with funeral lunches, purchase quilting supplies, and in other areas where there is a special need. A sincere “thank you” to Sarah Kuntzman, Karen Torkelson, Julie Warner, Virginia Phelps and Kathy Stuttle for volunteering your time and energy to slice and sell the pies. You were awesome! OCTOBER LIBRARY NEWS (submitted by Diane Schlesinger)
If you are an animal lover, you will really enjoy the books on
display in our library this month.
“Modoc” by Ralph Helfer is a true story. Modoc, an elephant, was
born on the same day and at the same time as the elephant trainer’s
son. They were born in a German circus town in 1896. Modoc and the
boy, Bram, grew up together and formed a strong bond which lasted
their entire lives. The book tells of their adventures over the next almost eighty years and
covering three continents, This story of love between and elephant and man is very
inspirational.
“Their Mysterious Ways”, a collection of true stories about God’s animals and us, was
compiled by Phyllis Hobe. Each tale in this book tells how someone has been blessed by an
animal, sometimes by pets and other times by wildlife.
Phillip Keller is the author of “Lessons From a Sheep Dog”. The book tells of Keller’s
adventures with Lass, his border collie, on a sheep ranch in British Columbia. He compares
their experiences with our encounter with God.
The Education Committee and Sunday
School of First Lutheran proudly presented
Bibles to the 3rd grade Sunday School
students at services on Sept. 14th.
Congratulations to (picture left to right):

Commemorations …... (contributed by Ruth Ann Hoehn)
Three of the people commemorated by the Lutheran Church in October are Theodor Fliedner,
Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, and Massie L. Kennard.
Theodor Fliedner was a German Protestant born in January 1800 at Epstein, a small village where
his father was the local pastor. He studied theology and passed his final examinations at the age of
twenty one. In 1821 he accepted a call from the Protestant church at Kaiserswerth, a small town
near Dusseldorf. He took journeys through Germany, and to Holland and England observing what
was being done towards prison reform. German prisoners were living in dirty cells and badly fed.
Fliedner was granted permission to hold regular services in the Dusseldorf prison and visit with the
prisoners individually. Fliedner helped start up The Prison Society of Germany in 1826 to improve
conditions in the prisons. In 1833 Fliedner opened his own parsonage garden at Kaiserwerth as a
refuge for discharged female convicts. He also was concerned about the sick poor, and decided that
hospitals might be well served by an organization of specially trained women. In 1836 he started the
first deaconess house at the hospital in Kaiserwerth. The deaconesses devoted themselves to the
care of the poor, the sick, and the young. Fleidner also founded other institutions to help orphans,
infants, and mentally ill females, and he assisted in the foundation and management of similar
institutions in various places in Europe. From 1849 to 1851 he traveled throughout Europe, the
United States, and the East, helping to start training schools for deaconesses. He established
deaconess houses in Jerusalem, Constantinople, Smyrna, Alexandria, and Bucharest. When he
died in October 1864 he left behind over 100 deaconess stations attended by 430 deaconesses.
Henry Melchior Muhlenberg was born in Einbeck, Hanover in Germany in September 1711. He
studied theology and was a deacon at Grosshennersdorf, in Upper Lusatia from 1739 to 1741. He
received a call from the Lutheran churches of Pennsylvania and went to Philadelphia in 1742. In
1748 he organized the first Lutheran synod of America. His main responsibility was with the
congregation in New Providence, but he was practically overseer of all the Lutheran churches from
New York to Maryland. In 1745 he married Anna Maria Weiser, the daughter of an Indian
interpreter, and they had eleven children. He died in October 1787. During his time in ministry,
he did not agree with the strict orthodoxy of many Lutherans, and was friendly with the Reformed
congregations and the Tennents (founded by Willaim Tennent, 1673 – 1746). Muhlenberg is
known for preaching in English as well as in German and his organizing of American Lutherans.
His liturgical principles became the basis for the Common Service of 1888.
Massie L. Kennard was an African-American Lutheran pastor and a native of Chicago. He received
his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Roosevelt University and his divinity degree from Garrett
Theological Seminary. He also studied at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Chicago. From
1959 to 1965 he was pastor of Concordia Lutheran Church in Buffalo. In 1965 he became
associate pastor of Augustana Lutheran Church in Washington. He became Director for Minority
Concerns of the Division of Mission in North America. According to his daughter “he was a very
casual person and did not wear a collar. His goal was to get more Asians, Indians, blacks, and other
people of color to become Lutheran ministers to make the church a racially inclusive fellowship.”
He worked with the lay associates program and twelve people, including two women in that program
became ministers. He died in 1996.

New Prayer Chain Guidelines for Requesting a Prayer
be added to the Prayer Chain ANYONE may request a Prayer for ANYTHING they deem necessary or gives them cause for concern. Please call with the Church office at 630.552.8263 or the first person on the Prayer Chain.
Please keep the prayer request as simple as possible: Name of person prayer requested for and reason. It is not necessary to go into a detailed message. God knows what is needed; we are simply the vessel to request His care. This will also help to keep the prayer request accurate as it passes down the list to members of the Prayer Partners.
There no longer is a Day and Night Chain (one chain only). Calls can be made between 8:30am – 8:30pm. Note those listed in italics1— they have the capability to receive text messages, and they have requested to be part of the chain in this manner. Please contact Theresa Bagg with questions.

The Many Dimensions of Stewardship
Christian stewardship means more than money and material possessions. Following are some other dimensions of life that we should give back to God:
1. Time. We are all rich here. You may be on a fixed income, but no one has more time than you. Every ministry takes time. Every witness takes time. Every act of worship takes time. How much time will you commit to God?
2. Talent and ability. Look at all the things you can do! You have talents of all kinds. Some are big and some are small. Have you made them available to God? Can you be enthusiastic for Christ? The abilities you use daily are of great value where you work. Can the Lord use them? Don’t wait for someone to ask before putting your talents to work for Christ.
3. Creation. God did a wonderful job giving us our world. How are we taking care of it? This commitment means we should be careful not to litter or otherwise spoil God’s beautiful world. It also means we should take care of the body that God has given us; it’s the temple of the Holy Spirit. Will you use wisely all that God has given you through his marvelous creation?
4. Possessions. This is more than money. It includes the tithe, but also covers what we do with the nine-tenths that remains. The way we manage our resources is a part of Christian stewardship.

Trunk or Treat This year's Trunk or Treat is
Sunday, October 26, from 1-3
p.m., in the Methodist Church
parking lot. Plan to sponsor a trunk and watch
for more details in the weekly bulletin and
fliers will be sent home with Sunday School
children.
Thank You to everyone who anonymously
donated new and gently used art & craft items
to the Sunday School! We are so happy to have
them!!
If you are thinking of something you would
like to donate to the Sunday School, we could
use some boxes of Kleenex for the classrooms
for our sniffly Sunday Schoolers!!
Sunday School Children
Welcome to Share Talents Summer is not the only time
children can share their musical tal-
ents with the congregation. If
anyone would like to sing, play an instrument (or
both!), please talk to Virgil Hyte and he will
make arrangements for you to share your
talents with everyone!
Student Information Forms The Sunday School office recently sent home
student information forms with each student.
Parents should complete these and return them
as soon as possible. If you did not receive a
form, contact the Sunday School office.
There was also a secret pal information sheet
that was sent home (unless children completed
them at Sunday School). This information will
only be shared with the student’s secret pal
and will help the adult secret pals as they
purchase snacks and little gifts for the
children.
Secret Pals Will Be Assigned Soon Secret pals will be assigned in October and the
adults will receive the name(s) of their secret
pal(s) before Halloween. If an adult is still
interested in signing up, the sheet is on the
bulletin board or the Sunday School office door
or contact Kathy Benoit.
We will need extra people as new students
enroll for Sunday School. Secret pals will
anonymously support Sunday School students
throughout the year and meet their "pal" at the
Sunday School Awards Sunday in May. This does
not (and should not) have to be an expensive
venture. Little notes, treats and surprises go a
long way to make a Sunday School child smile with
joy!! Thank you to all of our members who signed
up to be secret pals for this school year.
We Are Truly Blessed
Thank God for our dedicated Sunday School
teachers, music coordinators and assistants. We
are blessed with a great group that was installed
on Sunday, September 14th. Please give them the
support and thanks they need and deserve.

High School – Sarah & Dan Kuntzman
Adult – Pastor Bruce

Please contact Kathy Benoit if you can help the
Sunday School on a part-time or an as needed
basis. Again, the rewards are priceless!!!

mitment to provide parents with the Scriptures
