The necessity for a system has been surfacing over the past couple of years with the ‘disappearance’ of inventory from our kitchen, repeated vandalism in the parking lot and in Education Unit rooms, and the greater presence of transients in the neighborhood. Jackie Schulz, our Administrative Assistant, attended a workshop in Bismarck last August in which participants were told “it is not a question of if it happens, but rather a question of when it happens.” This past spring when Pastor Christina and I visited other ELCA churches as part of our ‘round robin’ Lent preaching rotation, we both noticed that we were the only ELCA church in the Bismarck/Mandan area that does not have some sort of security/surveillance system in place. Our present protocol has been that during the week, all the entrance doors of the church are kept locked except for the east entrance door by the office which is kept unlocked during our business hours of 8 to 5 Mondays through Fridays. This week our security/surveillance system installation has been completed. The necessity for a system has been surfacing over the past couple of years with the ‘disappearance’ of inventory from our kitchen, repeated vandalism in the parking lot and in Education Unit rooms, and the greater presence of transients in the neighborhood. Thank you to this month’s sponsor - Curtis Peterson of Bremer

Bank for sponsoring this month’s newsletter.

ATTENTION ALL QUILTERS: Quilting is starting up again!! September 19th & 20th and September 26th & 27th

from 9:00 A.M.-4:00 P.M. You don’t need any experience, just come and have fun.

Bring a sack lunch.

________________________________________________Remember starting

September 4th we will

resume our regular Sunday

service schedule, 8:30

(Traditional) & 10:45

(Contemporary) A.M.

First Lutheran, can we break our record from last year? Our goal is 4 deliveries this year!

Many children in Mandan begin school each year without supplies. During the next few months, please check the school supply aisles and consider making a purchase for those less fortunate right here in Mandan. Supplies needed are 24 box crayons, pencils, erasers, glue, glue sticks, rulers, scissors, back packs, folders and regular or college ruled tablets. Any supplies received will be equally distributed among the 6 Mandan elementary schools. The schools last year were very appreciative of all the supplies that were given to them! There will be a SPECIAL BOX for these items in the narthex; please drop your donations in there. Thank you for your kindness!

A few words from the Mission Endowment Committee…. A huge thank you to all of those who

have already contributed to the “Race to 100 Bridge Builders” by the end of 2016! We have extended

this race to April 2017 to allow for a 12 month cycle! Please prayer fully consider helping to grow the

First Lutheran Church Mission Endowment Fund!

The #1 reason people make a charitable gift to their church is to give back to God for the blessings

they have received. You can make contributions that meet your financial needs. (See the chart below for

examples of how you can make your contribution to reach your goal of $1,000.) Even if you don’t reach

$1,000 by the end of the race, once you have reached $1,000, a plaque will be created in recognition of your

generous support. It will be placed on the “Legacy” wall in the Narthex. You will also become a member of

the “Recognition Society” and be honored at a future date by the First Lutheran Mission Endowment

Committee.

For other ways to contribute, please refer to the Leave a Legacy brochure located in the Narthex and

complete the “Information Request Form” located in the brochure. Also, find helpful information provided by

the First Lutheran Mission Endowment Committee in the weekly bulletins and monthly newsletters. Contact

any of the Committee Members: Michelle Radke (400-9687), Donna Fishbeck (471-2051), Jim Mellmer (400-3733), Heather Heinle (226-4956) or Terry Bohn (471-7725) or call the church office for more information on

how you can contribute. (663-3594)

First Lutheran’s “Lunch at First” (LAF) program feeds about 400 of our Mandan High School students

each week during the school year! It’s a ministry that has grown immensely over the past few years and

promises to grow into the future. It’s great to witness God working through our volunteers as they serve

and our young people as they are served – all disciples of Jesus Christ!

As the numbers of young people served has grown, naturally so has the budget for LAF. It costs about

$400 a week to feed these young people – a cost of about $.95 cents per meal per student … a real

bargain!!

So, we are asking individuals, families, businesses and corporations for some financial assistance as we

move into the Fall. If you, your family or business would like to sponsor a LAF meal – it would go a long

way toward funding LAF. Maybe a group of families would like to sponsor a meal … and help serve it!!

Whatever the case – let us know and thank you in advance for your contribution toward bringing Jesus’

command, “Feed my sheep …” to our high school students.

Be a part of planning the 2017

Mission Trip!!! Through DOOR's Discover program, groups spend time serving with a

variety of local agencies and ministries and learning through evening

speakers and activities. The experience is about more than preparing a meal

at a soup kitchen or playing with children at a day camp. It is an opportunity

to work alongside local community members, to learn from local leaders, and

to listen to the stories of neighbors, clients, and churches.

The people and stories may challenge your initial perceptions of the city. But

they reveal the ways that God is working. They will help you to see the face

of God in the city. Each day our youth will be doing service oriented

activates.

Possible sites include: Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Hollywood, Miami, San

Antonio …..

The cost would be $305 per person PLUS the cost of travel.

Help pick the sites! Look for a date and time in the bulletin.

We are in need of Sunday and Wednesday school

teachers & also Confirmation leaders! Please prayerfully

consider helping out. Email or call Pastor Christina at

First Lutheran Church Council Minutes

Date: June 16, 2016 Time: 7:00 pm

Members Present

Pastor Lee Herberg, Pastor Christina Martin, President Jill Miller, Vice President Jeff

Bradford, Tim Faller, Andrea Bonness, Darrell Nitschke, and DJ Campbell

Absent

Secretary Jessica Petrick, Rynell Rusch, Jessie Hilfer

Devotions were presented by Pastor Christina Martin

Approval of Agenda

Moved by Jeff Bradford and seconded by DJ Campbell to approve the agenda.

Secretary’s Report and Approval of Minutes

Moved by Tim Faller, seconded by Darrell Nitschke to approve the May 19, 2016 minutes.

Motion Passed.

Financial Report/Review

May financials showed an almost break even. Income was $40,507.75 and expenses were

$40,564.05. There was a large expense for payment of $5490.00 for the retaining wall work.

There was also a $300.00 payment for a boiler valve and $580.00 expense for the Church School

Leaders Recognition.

The LAF is showing under budget compared to last year to date by $706.96. Total income is

down from last year at this time from $209,391 to $198,118 which correlates to attendance

being down. It was determined that we still have financial health as cash on hand as of May

31,2016 is $186.673.70, up $52,410.24 from this same time last year.

Unfinished Business

Building Task Force Update:

It has been determined that the plan to add a third floor and re-model will not be possible as it

would generate bringing the entire church building up to code and just would not be financially

feasible. The cost would be $600,000 plus to add a sprinkler system to the entire building. It

may be possible to re-purpose some existing space to add bathrooms and remodel existing

bathrooms. A variety of financial options were presented and discussed and will be addressed

as inspections and bids come in. Additional building assessments will continue. Goals were set

to start construction in the Spring of 2017 and to complete the Strategic Plan and Budgeting/

Financing by the fall (2016). It was determined this is high priority and to get this moving

forward.

Page 6: FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH First Lutheran Church...2016/09/08  · September 2016 Administrative Pastor Rev. Lee Herberg 663-3594 Associate Pastor Rev. Christina Martin 663-3594 Administrative

Security System/Surveillance:

A worksheet was presented showing the possible decrease in insurance rates with the installa-

tion of a security system.

Darrell Nitschke moved to approve the bid received from TS Security of $7075.96 and seconded

by DJ Campbell.

It was then pointed out that the amount was incorrect and both DJ Campbell and Darrell

Nitschke rescinded their motions.

Darrell Nitschke then moved to approve the bid from TS Security of $12,400.54 and was second-

ed by DJ Campbell.

Motion passed.

Sanctuary Projection System:

We are still waiting for additional bids.

First Lutheran Golf Tournament:

Municipal Golf Course. It will a 9-hole tournament with 4-person teams. The cost is $150.00

________________________________________________________________________________________

“God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. The suggested date for the 2016 dedicated day of service is Sunday, Sept. 11. This year’s dedicated day of service will also mark the 15-year anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.

We would like to honor our local first responders, firefighters, police and EMT’s by inviting them to worship with us on Sunday, September 11, 2016 as well as having cake for them during coffee hour that morning. Watch the bulletin and our facebook page for more details!
