First Executive Board went incredibly well at Camp Ocala in September! Thanks to all EB members for making it such a productive meeting, and thank you to the adults for your help throughout the weekend. We got the weekend going on Friday by finding out our leadership personalities and then broke into teams for bag skits. Saturday’s committee meetings ran smoothly and much was accomplished. In the afternoon we split into teams for rotating elimination games that everyone loved…especially dodgeball. Saturday ended with a 70s disco dance, and on Sunday we watched a slide show of the weekend. The Communications and Council Support Committee is already looking ahead to Third Executive Board where our goal is to have a quorum. We need your attendance to make that happen, so mark your calendars for March 16-18, 2007 to attend Third Exec at Camp McConnell! ~Alyssa Chamberlin State Council Reporter First Executive Board First Executive Board First Executive Board First Executive Board December 2006 Issue 2 2006-2007 State Council Officers President: Mylo Cheng Vice President: Kaitlin Hudson Secretary: Eileen Cowdery Treasurer: Jordan Morrow Reporter: Alyssa Chamberlin Historian: April Lacasse Parliamentarian: Shane McWilliams Sergeant at Arms: Randi Nall In This Issue 2 From your President 3 From your Parliamentarian 3-5 Committee Reports 6 Heart Walk Leadership Conference 7 SRTLC photos 8 Executive Board Members 9 4-Hers Around the State Early 2007 State Events 10 Upcoming Events 11 Photos 12 Contact Info The Florida 4-H State Council Newsletter T ogether E veryone A chieves M ore

From Your PresidentFrom Your PresidentFrom Your PresidentFrom Your President Dear 4-H Friends, What a wonderful start we have had in this 2006-2007 Florida 4-H year! I am proud to serve as your State President. Together, we have already been able to accomplish so much this year. We have truly become a team and begun to work together. First Executive Board was a great success due to your enthusiasm and creative thinking. We were able to develop a plan and brainstorm many new possibilities for the year. It was an awesome weekend! The YEAH! (Youth Empowered Ambassadors for Health) State Project had a great start at First Executive Board as we ate healthy snacks, participated in early morning exercise, learned how to facilitate a healthy lifestyles workshop, and held a round robin tournament featuring dodgeball, kickball, and many other activities. Hopefully, all of you have modeled these changes in your district, county, and club levels and reported back to the State Project Committee. Since First Executive Board, 4-Hers have partnered with the American Heart Association at Heart Walks across the state. At these Heart Walks, 4-Hers have obtained thousands of signatures on postcards to petition legislators to make physical education a required subject in schools as part of the No Child Left Behind Act. We are truly making a difference through our YEAH! State Project! In November, Florida 4-H hosted the first ever Southern Regional Teen Leadership Conference in Rock Eagle, Georgia. The conference was outstanding and was organized by a Youth and Adult Committee of Florida 4-Hers. 4-Hers from six different states attended. It was a great opportunity as Florida youth learned about the 4-H programs in other states. There were also tremendous workshops, funshops, round table discussions, ceremonies, and dances held throughout the four day conference. Next year, Florida will be co-hosting the event with Tennessee. Begin planning now because you do not want to miss it! In the coming months, we have many events and activities planned. The LAW Committee has been very busy planning both North and South Leadership Adventure Weekend. The North LAW will be held at Tyndall Air Force Base (though lodging will be outside of the base) and South LAW will be held at Camp Cloverleaf. It will be exciting to see how much Intermediate 4-Hers learn from this event. The Communications and Council Support Committee is also busy making plans for 4-H Day at the Capitol. Start making plans now to bring carloads of 4-Hers to Tallahassee on March 14 to support our amazing organization. It would be excellent if we had enough 4-Hers there to connect hands around the Capitol Building. Since the end of July when I was elected, I have had the privilege to travel across the state and visit many 4-H youth. It is great to see how passionate and hard working you are in accomplishing your goals. I want to encourage each and every one of you to keep up your dedication, commitment, and determination. At times everyone hits bumps in the road, but I promise that your hard work will be worth it. Please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] if you need anything. It would be my pleasure to come visit or speak at any events or meetings in your county or district.

"Desire is the key to motivation, but it's the determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal - a commitment to excellence - that will enable you to attain the success you seek."

-Mario Andretti (famous race car driver)

Let’s commit to continuing to make a difference in Florida 4-H as a united team. Proud to Serve Florida 4-H, Mylo Cheng State President

Leadership Adventure WeekendLeadership Adventure WeekendLeadership Adventure WeekendLeadership Adventure Weekend For LAW this year we are going to have a Mexican theme called “OH LAW”. LAW is going to be difficult this year, because as most of you know, its age group is changing to 11-13 year-olds, and it will be held in two different locations—one in the North and one in the South—on two different weekends. We discussed the schedule and came up with possible ideas for our workshops for the morning and are having others submit their ideas for work-shops that they may want to teach in the afternoon. We decided that we are going to have a mock Legislature and maybe a dance. We are going to incorporate the YEAH! Project into this LAW and we are so excited about how awesome it’s going to be! Respectfully Submitted, Amanda Glazier LAW Secretary

We began the meeting with introductions of the chair, April Lacasse, our adult advisor, Mr. Daniel Myers, our co-chair Melissa Kovacs, and our secretary, Baye Adams. We discussed the youth-adult partnerships on the Congress committee, and Mr. Daniel told us about our plans on this topic for this year’s Congress. Next, we discussed our goals for the year; we want to have adults attending the executive board committees and have set rules for Congress. We looked over last year’s evaluation results from Congress and discussed some new ideas for this year’s Congress. We decided on the theme Inspire LIFE (Leadership, Involvement, Fitness, and Enthusiasm) Around the World. After the sub-committees met we finished the meeting. Respectfully Submitted, Baye Adams Congress Committee Secretary

Hello Fellow 4-Hers, I hope that you are all enjoying this 4-H year so far, I know I am. I am so proud of everyone for the hard work that I saw at 1st Executive Board. Hopefully we can accomplish just as much at 2nd and 3rd. This year, the Constitution and Resolution committee is making a lot of changes to the Constitution and Bylaws. It is very important that you get with the Constitution and Resolution committee member from your district to discuss the changes so you can discuss them with your county and district councils. If you don’t have a representative from your district on the Constitution committee, email me at [email protected] and I will give you all the information you

need. We are also working on some new workshops dealing with parliamentary procedure. You will hopefully be participating in these workshops at 3rd Executive board. That’s all for now. Keep up the awesome work! Your Parliamentarian, Shane McWilliams

Communications & Council SupportCommunications & Council SupportCommunications & Council SupportCommunications & Council Support The new Communications and Council Support Committee started with selecting a co-chair, Jackson Mullins, and a secretary, Lauren Raulerson. Each committee member was then assigned to a district; they will inform their district of all state event information and promote the state events. The committee will help plan 4-H Day at the Capitol, which is on March 14, 2007. Having enough 4-Hers present to link hands around the Capitol is one of the committee’s goals which will take about 200 people. Lastly, the committee discussed plans for Second Executive Board and decided on a slogan for the weekend—“4-H is Out of this World”. Respectfully Submitted, Lauren Raulerson Communications and Council Support Secretary

Constitution ResolutionConstitution ResolutionConstitution ResolutionConstitution Resolution Shane and Ms. Wendi explained the purpose of the constitution committee, which is to revise the constitution and by-laws and to establish a lesson plan to teach the counties and districts how to create and revise their own consti-tutions. The possibility of a parliamentary procedure workshop at L.A.W., led by the committee members, was then discussed. It was decided to use a workshop plan that had already been in use in one of the counties and the discussion was tabled until 2nd executive board when we could look over those workshop plans. We then broke into groups to look over the constitution for possible amendments. When we regrouped we went over the amend-ments that were brought up and decided what ones to bring up to the council. Respectfully Submitted, Zak Kann Constitution Resolution Committee Secretary

LegislatureLegislatureLegislatureLegislature The committee looked over last year’s schedule and discussed what they did or didn’t like. Next we discussed Wakulla Springs and about having an alternate activity in case it rained and then we discussed the pros and cons of staying at a hotel vs. the FSU dorms. Then Kaitlin brought up the subject of making a Code of Conduct for Leg committee members and we discussed its policies. Kaitlin then gave all the committee position assignments. After that Mr. Wickie explained bill writing. Next we did some bill brainstorming. Finally, Kaitlin reminded everyone to tell our counties and districts about Leg and 4-H Day at the Capitol. The meeting was dismissed. Respectfully Submitted, Christina Hearn Legislature Committee Secretary

YEAH!: State Project StartersYEAH!: State Project StartersYEAH!: State Project StartersYEAH!: State Project Starters YEAH—Youth Empowered Ambassadors for Health—is our state project this year and we want to spread the idea of healthy lifestyles all throughout the state of Florida. Here are some ideas that you can use back in your area to get the project going.

Club: volunteer for an athletic program - plant a healthy food garden County: host/participate in local walks/runs - talk to schools about healthy lifestyles District: serve healthy snacks at meetings - play active games

For Ways and Means we went through our goals and then discussed sponsors such as Wal-Mart and how we could advertise our sponsors by putting their name on state events shirts or in the InFOURmant. We discussed LAW and having change wars there along with a mini award. The committee decided that we would have those who wish to that are on the Executive Board design a t-shirt. We also decided to have the fundraiser of smashing an old, ugly, beat-up car and charging for each hit. Our new fundraiser ideas were to create a calendar, and to mannequin and flamingo the cabins. We are so excited about this upcoming year and we are planning to have a very successful year. Respectfully Submitted, Amanda Glazier Ways and Means Secretary

TechnologyTechnologyTechnologyTechnology We convened the meeting and performed introductions, after which we discussed our goals for the year and how we can confront them. It was decided that this project will take a lot of effort so we all exchanged contact informa-tion so we can work together to finish parts of an ad CD by second executive board. We then created two sub committees for photo taking and video editing. Those who are in the photo committee will help take photos of all state events and those in editing will help edit and create the videos. We then went over some of the videos and photos of the last year, and brainstormed ideas for the coming year. After all had been discussed we adjourned the meeting. Respectfully Submitted, Ardee Coolidge Technology Committee Chair

State ProjectState ProjectState ProjectState Project The State Project Committee started off the meeting with an icebreaker and then elected Brittany Williams as our Co-Chair, and Kaitlyn Schirard as our new Secretary. Ms. Joy, Ms. Rita, and Ms. Jane are the adult advisors for the committee. We decided that the best way to participate in the YEAH! Program is to set personal, organized, and community goals. Some of our plans include creating informational packets, conducting district health competitions, making lesson plans for health education, and participating in Heart Walks. Our mission statement is “As 4-H’ers we pledge our health to better living, by promoting healthier lifestyles for 4-H’ers and our communities.” Respectfully Submitted, Kaitlyn Schirard State Project Committee Secretary

Southern Region Teen Leadership ConferenceSouthern Region Teen Leadership ConferenceSouthern Region Teen Leadership ConferenceSouthern Region Teen Leadership Conference 4-Hers from Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee joined Florida for the Southern Region Teen Leadership Conference in Georgia at Rock Eagle 4-H Center on November 9-12, 2006. Ms. Amy Gallimore, our keynote speaker from Tennessee, spoke to us on Thursday night presenting one of her funny and inspiring messages—everyone loved it! We also got to know people in icebreaker games and a healthy snack social opening night. Workshop choices on Friday and Saturday mornings ranged from drama to mentoring with reading. On Fri-day and Saturday afternoons 4-Hers participated in snack socials and funshops including crafts (like hemp necklaces) and games (dodgeball was a favorite). Everyone at the conference was divided into eight groups that met throughout the weekend for round table discussions. Each group discussed the importance of healthy lifestyles, what we like about 4-H now, and what we want to see in the future for 4-H. We all came together on Saturday afternoon for a “town hall” meeting where members from each group presented their top concerns and ideas for each of the three issues using posters they made. Afterwards, everyone voted on one poster for each issue that they thought was most important. The top three poster ideas of each issue will be presented to Cathann Kress, the director of Youth Development at USDA National 4-H Headquarters. Ms. Kress will use the ideas in meetings when related issues come up to show what Southern Region 4-Hers want. The posters have already been presented to agents all around Florida at the 4-H Administrative Conference. After the dance and activities on Saturday we gathered outside around the campfire to retire a flag. Thank you so much to the entire Florida planning committee for making the first ever SRTLC an amazing event!

Palm Beach County 4-H Youth had the privilege to partner with the American Heart Association this past October. Our job was to obtain signatures on 500 postcards petitioning Florida legislature to include mandatory Physical Education in the No Child Left Behind Act. Seven members of the Shining Stars 4-H club met at 6:30 am to work at the Heart Association’s table and to walk around collecting signatures while walkers and runners were stretching and warming up. Besides meeting Jared the Subway guy, the mayor, and other fun celebrities

we were able to collect all 500 signatures. The American Heart Association is conducting these heart walks all over the state and it is through our State Project that we have been given this opportu-nity to help fight childhood obesity. Check with your county and district presidents to see if a Heart Walk is coming to your area so you too can help. The Palm Beach 4-H County Council challenges you to also be on the lookout for other ways on how you can help make the best better by impacting your area in combating childhood obesity.
