New member, Nigel Soal, is asking if anyone who lives in the Gillingham, Kent area will be very kind and give him a lift to the AGM this year. He is very anxious to attend and will happily share expenses. We know we have members attending from that area so perhaps some kind person will offer help. See page 4 for further details. Car sharing for the AGM is a good idea in general and we know this already happens with several members travelling on the day in the one car. The Story Behind the Cover for the Charleville 350

produced by Phil Sheridan is on page 21 and the cover can be seen on page 22. Although this has nothing whatsoever to do with First Day Covers, my other hobby is writing and composing songs. At the time of writing I have just been notified that my song, Mersey Bridge, which I entered into this year‟s UK Song Contest, was a finalist and comes with a host of freebies related to writing and composing and the song will be heard by top music industry professionals, so fingers crossed for someone taking it up. I will let you know when it is uploaded to You Tube. Selwyn Goodacre writes about the “extra bits” in the margin surrounding the Greetings booklet panes of the early 90s. Royal Mail still likes to put little extras in the margins surrounding stamp sheets. See pages 8 & 9 for the full article.

Selwyn also gives his thoughts on the Booth Catalogue on page 17. Let us know if you agree with him or not. All letters will be published.

The British Postmark Bulletin (BPB) of 19 August has some exceptionally well designed postmarks in it. There are SHS for Aerial Post, Stampex, House of Hanover, Arnold Machin and for the 350

th Anniversary of the

Postmark. London SHC is going to be very busy over the next few weeks. If you would like to subscribe to the BPB then it is available fortnightly from Tallents House, 21 South Gyle Crescent, Edinburgh EH12 9PB. Annual subscription: £12.25 UK/Europe. £24.95 Rest of World.

Keeping our eye on eBay trends has shown an Ulster Paintings 1971 cover fetching double the catalogue price. See page 18 for the story so far – sent in by John Hedley. Feedback about this article will be much appreciated and will be published. Hopefully you will receive this edition of First Day Coverage early due to the AGM being on the 2

nd

October. Information is included that you need to know about this year‟s AGM. We do hope as many of you as possible will attend. We have a fantastic cover for you for just £5 to the first 55 members through the door on the day.

Well, that’s it from us for this edition. Autumn is just around the corner and our next edition is for December and almost another year will have gone. Get your request in early to family for that coveted cover you want for a Christmas present.

Phil Sheridan, Hon. Editor.

We have the fourth Association official cover for 2011 to show you on page 3. It is for your information only as the standing order list is full for this year.

We can also now show you the NPS official cover for Xmas M/S complete with the correct M/S for 2011on page 20.

Favourite Signed covers

The cover copy below was sent in by Frank Aldridge. It was produced by Buckingham Covers for the Sounds of Britain issue 3rd October 2006, and features Cleo Laine and John Dankworth, The King and Queen of British Jazz. I do not collect many signed covers, most are too expensive, but with my interest in Modern Jazz, I could not resist buying this one. It is what I call a very good signed cover, being signed by Cleo Laine and John Dankworth. There were 300 covers produced.

The Stables – The Laine & Dankworth Centre.

Wavendon Allmusic Plan Ltd (WAP) is a registered charity, founded in 1969 by the world-renowned jazz musicians Dame Cleo Laine and Sir John Dankworth. It has a vision to: "engage the widest range of people with music in all its diversity"

Sir John and Dame Cleo began the realisation of that vision with the development of The Stables Theatre, in some outbuildings at their home, as a venue for concerts and education activities. In October 2000, the new Stables Theatre opened its doors, with a second phase of development opening in 2007. It is now home to The Jim Marshall Auditorium with 448 capacity (398 seated and 50 standing) and Stage 2 (80 seated and 20 standing or 100 standing) and presents around 350 concerts and 250 education sessions each year.

This space could be working for you. If you are reading this then so are almost 300 other people. To advertise in a space this size

to the Editor P.O. Box 99, Widnes, Cheshire WA8 0NN

Dear Editor……

I sympathise with Mike Cross in his „Letter to the Editor (First Day Coverage, August 2011) and his thoughts on the over production of FDCs. Indeed many FDC dealers, and indeed, editors of FDC Catalogues and magazines, continue to deplore the fact that the Post Office is issuing what they consider to be too many Commemoratives each year. They say the market is becoming saturated, and increasingly is stressing the pockets of collectors to breaking point.

But as Mike points out – can these be the same people who are issuing, and listing, huge varieties of covers for some of our recent issues? In one recent FDC magazine I counted over 20 different Thomas the Tank Engine covers, and even more of the recent royal wedding. Are not these also stressing the pockets of collectors?

Variety is the spice of life, as they say, and it is obviously quite impossible for a collector to collect all varieties of every issue. So – let the collector specialise in just a few issues of particular interest to his or herself, and encourage other collectors to specialise elsewhere. There is plenty of choice, and why should not the Post Office continue issuing as many new issues as they like?

Selwyn Goodacre

NEWSLETTERS BY E-MAIL

Many members are delighted with the PDF emailed version of the Newsletter. Not only does receiving it this way cut down on having to find storage for paper newsletters around the home, as all PDF Newsletters can be stored in a file of its own on your computer desktop, but it means you can read the newsletter at A4 size and in colour. You can print out all the pages at any time and at any size, or just one page if you so wish.

We do understand that for a variety of reasons many members do not want to receive their copies via email and would prefer to continue with a hard copy. This is not a problem and we would be happy to continue to send them out via the post.

From the point of view of our European and Overseas members emailing your newsletter would mean that you could be on a par with everyone else when it comes to the opportunities of purchasing items advertised in the newsletter, for instance in the Members Cover Sale.

Emailing the newsletter also saves your association money in paying for the newsletter printing and in postage costs. At the time of writing we are emailing the newsletter to 100 members and are keen to increase this number.

Would you be willing to receive your A4 colour newsletter via email instead of a black and white A5 hard copy in the mail ? Yes, then please contact Terry Barnett with your email address.

If you already receive your newsletter by email then please don‟t forget to let us know if you change your email address.

£20 Star Letter

If we give your letter the STAR treatment then you could win

£20, so there is a great reason to write in with your news and

views. If you would like your Committee to know anything then

please write in to the letters page - it is only by receiving your

letters that we know what you want from your Association.

The Strange Case of the Extra bits By Selwyn Goodacre

In 1989 the Post Office started a series of „Greetings stamps‟ issues. To begin with these consisted of five se-tenant stamps all of the same value. In 1990 they increased this to ten.

This 1990 issue featured ten „famous smiles‟ – i.e. a teddy bear, Dennis the Menace, Mr Punch, the Cheshire Cat, the man in the moon, the laughing policemen, a clown, Mona Lisa, the Queen of Hearts, and Stan Laurel. The stamps, all with a 20p value, came in a stamp booklet, arranged in two rows of five – and here is the problem. The teddy bear, Mr Punch, the Cheshire Cat in the top row have „extra bits‟ outside the top perforations which complete the picture; the clown and Stan Laurel in the second row have „extra bits‟ – below the perforations.

Dealers arranging first day covers for this issue faced something of a problem – particularly if using the Post Office‟s own FDC. If the stamps along with the „extra bits are fixed to a Post Office cover, part of their picture of a smiling letter box is obscured. They were faced with the choice of using the stamps without the extra bits (1) and having the full FDC picture, or using „incomplete‟ stamps, and obscuring the picture (2). Which is more important – the stamps or the cover? It is an arguable point.

Where a dealer was using a commercial cover, they were better off, as these covers allowed room for the „complete‟ stamps. So, some of these commercial FDCs have the full sheet of 10 stamps complete with the „ extra bits‟; but a goodly number have the full sheet but with the stamps limited by the perforations, so missing the „extra bits‟.

Continued……….

(1)

9

However, the 1990 issue was so successful that the Post Office reissued the same stamps in 1991, but now with „1st‟ replacing the „20p‟. The „extra bits‟ are again repeated, but very oddly the extra sections are narrower, so that part of teddy‟s ear, and the bow ties of the clown and Stan are cut off slightly short, even within the „extra‟ sections.

The Post Office cover now featured a block of cheese (one wonders why – what is the relevance? Were they thinking of a „cheesy smile‟?). The picture is smaller than the pillar box of 1990, so the stamps can now be fixed with the „extra bits‟, and the picture is not obscured. Oddly this has not stopped certain suppliers still fixing the stamps without the „extra bits‟

Why, one wonders. The stamps were obviously only complete if all the „extra bits‟ are included. These don‟t add up to much in the way of extra space, so there would appear to be no practical reason to exclude them (though in 1990 there had been slight reason).

Presumably the stamps for the FDCs all came from the booklets, so it is hard to imagine why a dealer should intentionally remove the „extra bits‟. Were they trying to establish the principle of de luxe issues on the one hand, and run-of-the-mill covers on the other? An odd idea, I should have thought.

I only noticed the divergence sometime after I began collecting these two issues – now I have to have the two „versions‟ in separate sections.

I am not knowledgeable enough to know whether many other commemorative issues included stamps with „extra bits‟ – but if such do exist – do their FDCs demonstrate the same problems as outlined here, I wonder?

Royal Mail have recently been adding 'extra bits' in the sheet margin of several stamp

issues, Cats & Dogs with paw prints in the margins, Thomas the Tank Engine and, more recently, Morris & Company. I personally like Morris & Co. stamps (more than any other this year – and there have been some excellent issues and designs). I found the addition of the extra design in the margin adjacent to some of the stamps irresistible to throw away so I persuaded Phil to put them on official covers and I am delighted with mine (shown below). I think they look really nice.

All the covers listed are being sold by the member whose contact details appear at the beginning of their listing. MCS How to submit your covers for sale Please send in your covers for sale for forthcoming Newsletters to Phil Sheridan, The Editor, GBFDC, P.O. Box 99, Widnes, Cheshire WA8 0NN. Please submit your list either LEGIBLY HANDWRITTEN or typed in a Word Doc. otherwise it will not be included. Send them by e-mail to [email protected].. We would prefer you NOT to list covers in a table as it makes formatting difficult. Please ensure all copy is sent by the deadline date of 7th of the month prior to the publication of the newsletter. Any member can sell covers via the newsletter free of charge. If you require further details then please contact the Editor.

Please, if possible, only send the list of covers for the next newsletter rather than sending a large list or several lists. It is becoming a little confusing to work out which list belongs to whom and which edition it is for. Thank you

1) Please list them in a Microsoft Word Document (NOT in a table though). The more details you include then the less space there will be for your covers and less covers will be listed.

2) Either email your list or send it by post to Phil Sheridan. Hon. Editor, GBFDC Association, P.O. Box 99, Widnes, Cheshire WA8 0NN. E-mail: [email protected] When posting hand-written lists please make sure we can read them. It is probably best to print all lists.

3) Deadline for all items for inclusion in to any newsletter is ALWAYS 7th of the previous month to the newsletter publication. Please see top of page 2 and inside back page in EVERY newsletter.

Collect GB First Day Covers

Some thoughts on the Booth Catalogue

By Selwyn Goodacre

This wonderfully useful catalogue for first day cover collectors first saw light of day back in December

1981. In 2009, it achieved an amazing 30th edition. In my innocence I initially thought the Booth Catalogue

was a different entity from the Buckingham series under almost the same title, but I soon found that they

are the same thing – Jeffrey Booth having taken over the helm with the 21st edition 1993, changing the title

in the process from Collect First Day Covers to the more accurate Collect GB First Day Covers (one must

remember First Day Covers exist all round the world). Soon after, he gave it the sobriquet title The Booth

Catalogue.

What a valuable item the catalogue is. Here are details of covers from the very first in 1840 right up to the

present day. Jeffrey has made several innovations – notably some pages devoted to ‘philatelic gems’ –

drawn mostly from his own collection. In the early days of his editorship he listed the whereabouts of these

pages in the list of contents – more recently he has stopped doing that and one has to hunt for them, which

can be a little tedious. He also urges us to send him emails with our comments – but then does not give an

email address! (though this can be found in previous editions, and on the internet)

Some errors persist from year to year. Many years ago I told Tony Buckingham that Harry Furniss (he of

the 1890 Jubilee spoof, and the 1973 Cricket issue) was not spelt with an ‘e’. And it was indeed corrected

for the 1990 edition, but thereafter I fear it reverts to the error.

It is fascinating to observe the changing attitude by Tony Buckingham, and later by Jeffrey Booth towards

‘Official covers’. Back in 1990 Tony mentioned them not at all. By 1993 Jeffrey was admitting it was

‘another difficult area’, and declined to list them separately. In 1996 he said it was ‘another confusing

area’, but still insisted ‘we have stayed with pricing postmarks, rather than covers’ – which does seem a

little odd to me – surely the whole joy of collecting first day covers is that the cover as a whole is the item

– cover design, stamps and postmark. Jeffrey repeated his 1996 thoughts in 1998.

In 2005 with the 28th edition, he had a change of heart. From 5 July 1978, he suggested that official covers

can be valued at double the ‘standard handstamp price’. But with the current 2009 catalogue he has

reneged, saying that he prefers ‘to make no variation in pricing between the different types of cover

design’.

I find this attitude very strange. It is my view that an official cover is always preferable to a commercial

cover which simply ‘borrows’ the official cancellation from the originator. After all, the original official

cover demonstrates the purpose of the cancellation – and that is what I like to see. Without the charity or

organisation creating the cancellation in the first place, commercial cover producers would be bereft. I

would suggest, for example, that for the Year of the Child 1979, the Lewis Carroll Society cancellation on

the cover designed by a member of that Society is more worthy (and more valuable) than – say- a Philart

cover using the same cancellation. On the Village Churches issue, the official Earls Barton cover, produced

in the village and showing the Church in a design by the stamp designer is surely more interesting, and

valuable than – say – a Cotswold or Stuart cover? But Jeffrey would value them all the same?

Extraordinary.

I do appreciate that, on occasions, distinguishing an official cover from a commercial cover can be

problematical. This is particularly so where a charity has engaged a commercial firm to produce an official

cover on their behalf (examples include, in the Year of the Child issue, Hawkwood Covers who designed

the Yardley Primary School cover, and Dawn Covers who designed the Cub Country Year cover)

But such problems are no excuse for dismissing all official covers as a result. No – I am with Peter Barrett

and his Steven Scott ‘Official’ First Day Cover Catalogue (2000). He understands the problems, and copes

brilliantly with them.

ULSTER PAINTINGS 1971

The Ulster Paintings (16 June 1971) cover shown below (1) was sold via eBay during July 2011. There were 12 bids for it and it finally sold for the incredible price of £136.78. However, in the 2010 Bradbury Catalogue, that particular cancellation is quoted at £75, and Bradbury states that an official cover for this cancel is not known, so does not list a price. However, the only reason for this cover fetching almost double catalogue price is that it is an official cover.

If you look at entry (12) in the Bradbury catalogue, it does list the cancellation for an „ORDINARY‟ cover at £75 but indicates that an „OFFICIAL‟ is n.o.c (not on cover) which means there was no known „OFFICIAL‟ cover issued with this cancellation so it would indicate that the cover we are looking at would be classed as „ORDINARY‟ and be valued at £75 so the £136 bid seems rather odd but maybe the bidder knows something that we don‟t? Perhaps A.G. Bradbury could give an answer?

On the internet two different issue dates both serviced on the SAME COVER as the Ulster ‟71 were found. It is identified as a Philart Luxury cover. This would suggest that this particular cover was produced in quantity rather than a „one off‟ for the Ulster „71 issue and if the cancel had been sponsored by Philart then it would be conceivable that A.G.Bradbury would have been aware of it.

Also if you look at the copies of the two identical covers enclosed you can see the vast difference in the year issue dates. i.e. 1976 (2) and 1995 (3) so, including the 1971 issue, this illustration has been around for a while.

Can any of our members throw any light on the origins of this cover please? Is it an original official cover first produced by Philart for this issue that has only just come to light? Any information would be very much appreciated and we will publish it in the newsletter.

STORY BEHIND THE COVER – Charleville Cover for Crown Jewels issue

On 23 August 2011, Phil Sheridan produced a truly historical First Day Cover to tie in with the Crown Jewels stamp issue. Phil Sheridan‟s home town of Charleville, Co. Cork, Ireland, was originally called Rathgoggan prior to 1661. A man named Roger Boyle, who became loyal to Charles II, named the town Charleville in honour of Charles II in his Coronation year. Roger Boyle was named after his parents' first son who died at age nine. The Boyle family settled in Ireland in the late 16th century, Richard Boyle becoming the Earl of Cork and acquiring large estates and wealth, largely at the expense of the local Irish lords. Roger Boyle was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. On 5 September 1660 he was created earl of Orrery. The same year he was appointed a lord justice of Ireland and drew up the Act of Settlement. In 1661, he founded the town of Charleville, County Cork, near his estate at Broghill.

Charleville was founded upon the laying of the foundation stone of Charleville House on May 29th 1661. The man responsible was Roger Boyle better known as Lord Broghill, 1st Earl of Orrery. Son of the First Earl of Cork, Richard Boyle, Roger largely spent his formative years abroad. His father had acquired much wealth in land speculation during the reign of Elizabeth I and had bequeathed the title of Lord Broghill upon his son at the age of seven. When Oliver Cromwell came to power in the 1640s, Boyle had evidently inherited his father‟s opportunist streak and joined Cromwell‟s ranks in Ireland upon noticing that the fortunes of war appeared to be in Cromwell‟s favour and aided the puritans in their conquest of Ireland in 1649-53. Some ten years later, when the monarchy was once again restored in England, Lord Broghill was one of the first to submit to King Charles II. Broghill was thus awarded with the job of Lord President of Munster by the King. Owning large tracts of lands centrally located at Broghill and Rathgoggan, he decided to build his court and residence here. He later wrote about his aspirations in having his new town of Charleville, named in honour of King Charles II, officially recognised by the crown. "This 11th. December from Charleville, which is the name some godfathers have given the new house. I am now in, for the foundation of it was laid on 29th May, 1661. I hope by your grace’s favour to get it made a borough, and have the borough bear that name”. The town was subsequently created a borough, to be governed by a sovereign, tow bailiffs and twelve burgesses, who were to be a body corporate. The borough was able to return two members to parliament. Lord Broghill died at Castlemartyr in 1679. The great house which he built in Charleville was to survive just eleven more years. In 1690, at the height of the Williamite Wars, the Duke of Berwick and his forces left Limerick for Cork after successfully defending the city from the Williamite army. Having learned that Cork had already been taken, he returned to Limerick via Charleville from Kanturk. He and his soldiers were well received by the staff of Charleville House although no Boyle was in residence. They drank much wine and before departing, the Duke ordered the mansion to be set on fire. The ruined mansion provided the building materials for much of the present-day town of Charleville. Moatville House now occupies the site.

The cover produced by Phil Sheridan can be seen on page 22. It also bears the 60p Charles II stamp from the 2010 House of Stuart issue of stamps.
