FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH (Disciples of Christ) of Jefferson City, Mo.
8:20AM TRADITIONAL WORSHIP 10:40AM CONTEMPORARY WORSHIP 9:30 AM SUNDAY SCHOOL
THE CHURCH BELL
PASTORAL PONDERINGS
Brothers and Sisters,
On March 4th, Casey and I had the privilege of
sharing with the church the exciting news that
we are expecting a baby in September. This is
one of those strange moments for ministers
because you want to make sure your community
knows and can join the celebration, but you
don’t want to be the center of attention. That
reticence, coupled with personalities not inclined
to “oversharing,” allows me to make the promise
that every sermon, Bell article, and conversation
is not going to be about Baby Geraldine (which is
the nickname we’re using until the baby actually
arrives).
Yet, I will write one piece on the topic because,
well, it has been on my mind recently. This
pregnancy brought great joy to us but also great
relief. Frankly, we had hoped it would happen
a lot sooner and we had been struggling –
mentally, emotionally, and spiritually – that our
desire and prayer to start a family seemed to be
going unanswered. Naturally we remain nervous
and in prayer that all will go well. Your prayers
for the same are certainly invited!
This new reality of expecting a child has changed
things. The parents reading this are going,
“duh,” but I don’t only mean the kind of change
where everything is different and more chaotic.
I mean the kind of change that comes with
waiting and anticipation, of imagining a moment
radically different than what you have known
before. (continued page 2)

Who Are We? We call ourselves Disciples, a community of believers who follow Jesus by worshiping God, growing in faith, and serving all in need.
Bound to each other in Christ’s love, we discover our life together through sharing life with the world.
Palm Sunday Parade Palm Sunday is March 25th and our children’s Sunday School class, parents, and any others are invited to join us for our Palm Parade to the Capitol Building at 9:30AM during the Sunday School hour. This annual event is always a fun opportunity to live out a Bible story for ourselves.
Easter Egg Hunt and Potluck Our annual Easter Egg Hunt and Potluck will be on March 21st, 5:30PM, at McClung Park. The main dish will be provided, families are invited to bring a side dish or dessert to share. Please let the church office know if you plan on attending. It will be a wonderful time for all our families to gather together. Don't forget your Easter basket!
Fill some Easter eggs! Bags of Easter eggs to be used at our Easter Egg Hunt are now available in the gathering area. If you are able, grab a bag or two and fill them with candy or treats for the kids (please no chocolate!) and return them to church by Sunday, March 18th. Thank you!
Faith Seeking Understanding Book Discussion Sunday, March 25, 9:30AM in the Activities Room (This month’s book Is Table Talk by Rev. Dr. Mike Graves. Copies are available through the church office or with Rev. Sarah.)

Pastoral Ponderings (continued from page 1)
In ancient Greek (the language of the New Testament) there are actually two words for time. One is “chronos,” which means time passing minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day. This is where we get the word chronology or chronological. One thing happens, then the next thing, and then the next thing. We’re all familiar with this understanding of time. We use it and follow it every day. The second word for time is “Kairos.” It means an opportune moment, the “right time” for something to happen. “Kairos Moments” are often referred to as being “pregnant with meaning.” This is the right time for something new to happen. The birth and resurrection of Jesus are both Kairos moments. Something new is happening at the most opportune of times. Trying to imagine what life looks like not just as a pastor and husband but also as a father has this Kairos feeling to it. It seems like this moment is just bursting with possibilities. There is so much potential for what this might become. When our child inevitably acts unruly or disappoints in some shocking way please feel free to remind me of this column and how I had over-sentimentalized parenthood. Yet, what I want to point out to you all (and thus my reason for writing this) is that Kairos moments are everywhere. Each day brings opportunities for new inspirations leading us in new directions. Our lives are not routines but laden with a potential whose source is Divine. This pregnancy is an answer to our prayers but it is also a reminder that God’s time is a beautiful thing. Kairos moments are all around us waiting to be recognized. Steadfast in hope, Rev. Beau

Please join us at Culver’s on Monday, March 26th, and help support the youth in raising funds for their mission trips this summer. Thank you!
Noisy Offering
Every month the young people in our congregation participate in worship and serve others by collecting our noisy offering. Thank you for supporting the various organizations, causes, and ministries that we collect change for. Our next Noisy Offering will be March 18th supporting our Missionaries. Children are invited to bring their GRATITUDE BOXES with change for the noisy offering each month. If your child needs a GRATITUDE BOX, please see Rev. Sarah. Thank You!
Hopefully, you have received your envelopes with a flyer and tickets for our Pancake Breakfast coming up very soon! Hosting this church fundraiser requires the help of approximately 90 individuals to flow smoothly and to serve those in the community who walk through our doors. Your help is needed in a multitude of ways including: helping us cut advertising costs by distributing your flyer wherever you can (more available upon request from the church office), cooking,
serving tables, beverage prep, ticket takers, trash disposal, clean-up and breakdown. Serving begins at 7:00AM and ends at noon on Saturday, April 21st. Tickets are $10 (10 and under eat free). Your help is needed for the following times and positions:
Cooks - 6:00-9:30AM and 9AM-12PM Beverage Prep - 6:00-9:30AM and 9AM-12PM
Ticket Takers Doors - 6:30-9:30AM and 9AM-12PM Trash Disposal - 7:00-9:30AM and 9AM- 12PM

Musical Notes
AT THE MOST RECENT WORSHIP COMMITTEE MEETING the group revisited a topic that has been discussed on multiple occasions: the purpose of the musical prelude in worship. This topic was resurrected after a recent offering by our handbell choir largely went unnoticed due to boisterous conversation in the sanctuary just prior to worship.
Historically, the prelude served two purposes in church music. First, it was a time for the organist or other musicians to “warm up” their instruments, getting them in tune with one another and the like. As it related to the mass, the prelude intoned the key of the first hymn to enhance the singing of it. Secondly, and most importantly, the prelude in church history was viewed as the start of worship, not something that merely preceded it. Its purpose today is to set the tone for the worship service, acknowledging the service theme or liturgical season. It may also be used to teach new melodies or reinforce ones to be sung within the service. All in all, it is to be a time of preparation: a time to pray and reflect; a time to quiet our minds against the noise of the world and the “business” of a church body; a time to intentionally open our hearts in order that we might hear God’s Word for us through the Scripture, sermon and prayers to come.
The Worship Committee recognizes that conversation during the prelude is not a problem unique to FCC. At some point in our culture, a shift was made that relegated music to background music – a seeming necessity for nearly every event, but one that shouldn’t have too much attention given to it. This cultural shift inevitably – and regrettably -- found its way into worship as well, probably as churches tried to break down barriers by being more “casual.”
The Worship Committee has experimented with different ways of addressing this issue – prayer slides, using acolytes as a visual cue, providing a countdown clock on the screens, and more. The issue is tricky because we also fully recognize the importance of fellowship to create a sense of belonging in this family of faith. Hospitality, too, is a must to visitors, but consider -- might there be other ways to make them feel welcome among us aside from the 5 minutes prior to worship when we should be centering ourselves to worship God with all that we are and have? What might happen in my individual spiritual walk if I adopted a spirit of prayer during the prelude rather than visiting with my neighbor about the sporting event I just attended or the chores I need to do after the service?
In the big picture of life, this is not an earth-shattering discussion. But it is worth considering because the chatter has proven disruptive (a proverbial “stumbling block” Scripture cites?) to the worship of at least a few who draw meaning from musical offerings, even those offered as preservice music. The act of offering music in worship is two-fold. First, it is a musician’s offering of worship to the One who is our true audience. Thus, playing or singing whether people in the pews are listening or not has merit. But secondly, musicians are also offering a gift that is to be shared in hopes that it may be a worship aid to the larger community. When loud conversation and laughter prevents that, we’ve not lived out part of our purpose. In fact, not honoring the gift also denies the stewardship of time – often hours in choosing and rehearsing music – made by many volunteers within our music ministry. Bear in mind, too, that musicians offering that music are often from our community; how hospitable are we being to them if we talk through their musical offering simply because it takes place before the pastor’s welcome?
I know personally how easy it is to succumb to the temptation to talk over music as we try to greet those around us on Sunday mornings! But I also know how the musicians I’m privileged to work with give of their time and talent, often sacrificially, and I desire for that gift to be honored by a grateful congregation. May we all strive to be respectful of the many gifts we value in this beloved church family! As always, I’m happy to continue this conversation with you one and one if you have comments or concerns regarding this or anything else that is music or worship related.
UPCOMING SPECIAL MUSIC: *March 18, 8:20 – Dr. Natasia Sexton, Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choirs at Westminster College and choir director at First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson City, will share an arrangement of the hymn, “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.” *March 18, 10:40 – Lydia Knatcal and Cameo Hoeme reprise a moving duet, “Worn,” by Christian group Tenth Avenue North. This is not-to-be-missed! Also, take a listen to Rend Collective’s new song, “Rescuer (Good News)” which we will sing for the first time as a congregation. *March 25 (Palm Sunday), 8:20 – Chancel Choir sings “A Palm Sunday Jubilation,” based on the early American tune Followers of the Lamb. They will also provide the offertory, a lovely setting of John 3:16-17, “God So Loved the World” by Lloyd Larson. *March 25, 10:40 – Add this new song, “Prepare Ye the Way,” by Michael W. Smith to your playlist so you will be ready to lift your voice to welcome our King on Palm Sunday! *March 29 (Maundy Thursday), 7:00 p.m. – Chancel Choir and the Women’s Ensemble provides 5 anthems throughout this meaningful service, accompanied by these gifted instrumentalists: Johanna Boyer and Hannah Huedepohl, violin; Nathan Erickson, cello; Laurie Janeczko, flute; and Scot Stout, piano. Instrumentalists will provide music before the service as well, so plan to arrive early! *April 1 (Easter), 8:20 and 10:40 a.m. – Chancel Choir brings special music to our celebration of the Lord’s victory over death and the grave, singing arrangements of “In Christ Alone” and “Crown Him with Many Crowns.” A brass quartet will accompany these anthems as well as congregational hymnody, providing the punctuation mark to our festival services. I’ve no doubt you will be blessed by what promises to be a stellar quartet comprised of Tom Tripp and Dan McClard (trumpet) and Dan and David Witter (trombone).
SUPPORT FCC MEMBERS AND THE COMMUNITY at the same time by attending one of the following musical events: The Jefferson City Community Symphonic Band, including FCC members Nancy Priddy, John Kuebler, and Dan and Tracy McClard, invite you to attend their next concert this Sunday, March 18, at 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Lutheran High School. Bob Priddy of our congregation will narrate the program titled, “Big Band, No Strings Attached,” which will feature “Moon River,” “Blue Moon,” “They Can’t Take That Away from Me,” “Someone to Watch Over Me” and other jazz standards. MOstly Opera, accompanied by Southside Philharmonic, presents Mozart’s The Magic Flute on Thursday, March 22, 7:00 p.m. at Mitchell Auditorium. Sandra Troutt of our church family is among the cast and Terri Lloyd plays clarinet in the ensemble.
