Youth Religious Revival

Jesus • In the Churcll In Top 40; Rock •

By Virtie Stroup Staff Religion Reporler

The Psalmist 's description pf worship as "making a joyful noise unto the Lord" may be coming true-and Ithrough .

It may be coming through the new beat in pop music which is spilling over into church music.

And it may be due to young people, who ha ve tried drugs r-and alcohol and in their ~ groping for some kind of \ meaning have turned on to ["""' Jesus. ' r

Their quest is "causing a fan tastic revival to sweep the (""l nation," said the Rev. Fred ' Kelly, minister of music at First Baptist Church on West,--Fifth Street. d

It's a Revival <: The revival-"and that's as L..

good a name as anything"-is :S seen specifically in the music of the young, Kelly said. These young people , he ad- ded, are turning toward Jesus rather than drugs and ·alcohol. ~

At present, he said, the gospel thrust in music is more 3 evident outside the church, but the infl uence of Jesus in the pop music world Is the outgrowth of a resurgence of The Rev. Fred Kelly .. interest in Jesus, especially on campuses and at rock, folk and soul festivals. the new music, he ' said,

"without being really with it. He said churches "have So if it is a message of joy, made a stab in the last couple then·. you are going to feel or three years to try and it-there's no way to miss it." bring music up to date with Kelly said sometimes theyoung people-music t hat

gospel song revival

Baptist Convention's "Cen-turymen."

"Billboard" and "Variety" have predicted that the drug and sex themes of the '60s will be replaced this decade by songs abo,llt Jesus, and a look at the "Top 40" song r atings r eflects this .

There's "Oh Happy Day" and "Am azing Grace" and " My Sweet Lord" and now " Jesus Christ, Superstar."

Kelly said he had only heard " S u pe l's tar " in snatches, " but the music without a doubt is 'Top 40.' " He admits the singers " are not like we 'd expect churcb singers to sound like, but the text is pretty much scriptural - only in today's language. "

Kelly said he has heard more talk on this rock opera " than anything in a long time, and everyone seems to have an opinion and they vary drastically."

Some ministers, he said, "think it is really fine and speaks well the message of J esus Christ to you n g people." One young person, Kelly said, "thought this would be what Jesus would be - a superstar - if he were here today because being a superstar is the best. For him Jesus being a superstar is not degrading, but for s 0 m e adults the album is degrad-ing. But then some young people don't like it, either."

To Be Rewarded Some people, Kelly said,

are not willing to admit there is any merit in the new music, " but I've a 1 w a y s believed that anything done in the name of Jesus Christ would not go unrewarded.

" But those who are not accustomed to hearing this music in church tend to write it off as 'no good' without trying to find some real meaning. Our claim. all along as been if you touched one person in a sermon or the.. music , then the whole was worthwhile. I am going to still claim that promise."

Kell y bel i eves the popularity of Judy Collins' version of "Amazing Grace" is due to the simple pro-clamation of the message of J esus Christ - "you don 't have to guess what it means" - and her straightforward singing in a plaintive voice.

Message is the Thing For Kelly the new beat

coupled with the new trend in music is getting a religious message across "if it doesn't relay a message, then the music is useless."

Most of the music favored by the young people, he said, deals with the prohlems in society. For Kelly this is natural - " I don't see how you can separate concerns for your fe llow man from the church so the music means more because of personal involvement. "

At First Baptist, Kelly said, "we say we are a gathered, scattered congregation. We gather to learn, worship, sing and study and then we scatter throughout the city , still a church."
