Adult Sunday School for the Summer

The Adults will be meeting in the Auditorium during Sunday School for the summer beginning Sunday, June 5th. They will be viewing the DVD series “Truth Project”, by Focus on the Family.

This fall, First Baptist Church has the opportunity to host a concert with Keith and Kristyn Getty! Keith and Kristyn Getty occupy a unique space in the world of music today as preeminent modern hymn writers. In re-inventing the traditional hymn form, they have created a distinguished catalogue of songs teaching Christian doctrine and crossing genres by connecting the world of traditional and classical composition with contempo-rary and globally-accessible melodies.

In 2016 and 2017 Keith and Kristyn are launching a global release of “Facing a Task Unfinished” song, album, and tour. This album and concert series will challenge believers to finish the task of taking the gospel to every tribe, tongue and nation, and we will have the privilege of hosting one of the stops on their tour right here at First Baptist Church!

While the evening will be billed as a concert, it really is a ministry event! The gospel-centered nature of the Getty’s songs comes out in their on stage performance as well. Their ultimate desire is to lead people to the cross, so they can worship our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As a church, we sing many of the Getty songs and this will be a unique opportunity to invite friends and enjoy an evening of music ministry!

There will be 3 tiers of tickets available for purchase. Front of house will cost $35, back of house will cost $30 and balcony will cost $25. Tickets will be available on a first come, first served basis per section, but we will arrange seats based on availability and to fill to the maximum capacity of our auditorium. Beginning on June 8th, we will offer tickets only to people that attend our church. Beginning July 1st, we will open it up to the public until all the tickets have been sold. Be watching the announcements and website for your opportunity to purchase tickets!

Internet Safety and Your ChildA Breakfast for Parents

Saturday June 18th from 7:00-9:00am In this digital age, it is difficult for us to navigate the tools of technology while shep-herding our child’s heart toward the goodness of God. Every parent must struggle with ques- tions like: How do I protect my child when they have access to the internet? When is the appropriate time to get my child a cellphone? How do I protect my children when I do decide to get them a cell phone? How can I protect my child from seeing things on the internet that are not appropriate? Every parent must address these questions for themselves as we raise our kids; there is no one-size-fits-all answer. We will again have Ben McBride from Covenant Eyes with us at FBC. This time, we will look at some best practices and discuss these issues together in an effort to do our absolute best to protect our children. If you are a parent, if you are going to be a parent or if you’ve already walked through these trials, come prepared to listen to others and share what you have learned in your own experience. Please sign up at the Information Area in the foyer as we will provide breakfast for everyone (donations accepted).

This summer, Beyond High School Ministry will have the opportunity to serve at The Center for Stu-dent Missions (CSM) in Detroit, MI for our summer ministry trip. CSM is an organization dedicated to inner-city ministry. They partner with existing local churches and ministries to provide a unique opportunity for teens to minister and servethe Lord. Working at different ministry locations every day, ourgroup will have an opportunity to learn about ministries that they might be able to serve in for the rest of their lives.

We were the first group to serve at CSM Detroit 2 years ago and we helped get their ministry established. This year, we will have the opportunity to go back to the city and see how God has been working through CSM and the foundational work that we put in! It is exciting for us to have a chance to make an impact so close to home, please pray that God will bless this ministry greatly!

Because CSM strives to make these trips available to as many teens as possible, we will be housed in a home owned by CSM, eating brown-bag lunches, and enjoying cultural experience at a different ethnic restaurant each evening.

Each student will need to pay $350 for their trip, which will include transportation, housing and their meals. It is our church’s desire to have as many teens experience these trips as possible, and we try to keep their costs down and provide help as needed. So, we would ask that you please be praying for our group as we prepare, as well as consider giving financially toward the trip. Please make your check out to First Baptist Church and mark your giving envelope “Teen Trip” and all money donated will be divided up for the team. The last Sunday to give will be July10th. Also, if you have jobs that you would like to hire teens for that have financial needs, please contact Pastor Chad.

This year, we will NOT be going during the week of the 4th of July, instead we will depart on Sunday, July 31st and return on Saturday, August 6th. Thank you for all of your prayer and support!

Many thanks to Linda Patton who prepares these monthly reports.

Also, women are needed to serve as Advisors – those who meet one-to-one with participants. You must be a member of First Baptist for this role.

Missionary of the Month Brandon & Rachel Buser

Field Address: New Tribes Mission PO • Box 625 • WeWak, E.S.P. 531 • Papua New GuineaEmail: [email protected] Agency: New Tribes MissionBirthdays: Brandon: 8/24/78 Rachel: 3/5/79 Married: 8/18/01Children: Briana: 11/18/02 Brady: 3/1/05 Gracie: 8/23/07 Ruby: 8/28/15Home Church: Clairemont Emmanuel Baptist Church, SanDiego, CAMinistry: Tribal Church Planting and Bible Translation Brandon grew up in Papua New Guinea where his parents were missionaries with New Tribes Mission. He grew up with the Iteri tribe, which allowed him to see God’s Word change even cannibals into followers of Jesus Christ. Brandon was saved when he was four years old. Through the help of his father, he clearly understood his lost state and need for a Savior. When Brandon was about 16, he started to recognize God calling him to bring the Gospel to those who have never heard. Later, he attended Christian Heritage College where he met Rachel and graduated with a degree in Mathematics. Shortly afterward, he and Rachel were married, worked for two years, and then joined New Tribes Mission’s training program. Rachel was raised in a loving Christian home in the United States. Through godly parents she saw what it meant to be a Christian and was saved at an early age. In high school the Lord opened her heart to the possibility of serving Him in full-time missions. During her years at Christian Heritage College her eyes were opened even further to the vast number of people groups that had not yet heard the Gospel. In August 2003, Brandon and Rachel joined New Tribes Mission to train to plant indigenous churches in Papua New Guinea. Their vision was to work among one of the many tribes in the Sepik Region of the country. The 18 years Brandon spent growing up in the Sepik gave him a good understanding of the culture. The task of learning a specific tribal language, translating the scriptures, teaching the Gospel, nurturing the body of believers, and equipping the church to be self-sustaining and self-propagating is immense even with this familiarity. Brandon and family departed for Papua New Guinea in July 2006. God has orchestrated the timeline of their ministry thus far: June 2008: First trip to Biem Island. August 2008: Committed to live among the 2,000 Biem islanders, learn their language and culture, and teach them God’s Word in their own language. Feb. 2009: The families moved to Biem. June 2010: The final language check was passed. January 2012: Start of the literacy program. The first Biem literacy class graduated 21 students in March and 20 more in May (praise for the excitement among the Biem people who are learning to read and write in their own language for the first time!). July 2012: Chronological Bible Teaching in the Biem language began. September 2012: Final teaching day – the Lord reaped a harvest for Himself among the Biem. The joy of new life came to many of the 150 men and women attending the final teaching (including the Biem Chief). Praise for the joy and privilege for the team (Busers, Depners & Chens) to see God’s hand move among the Biem people. There is now a clear group of Biem folks that have embraced the teaching. September 29, 2013: 11 Biem men and women were the first to be baptized. In recent years, more Biem men and women have been added to God’s family. The church continues to grow strong and more mature. Many Bible teachers have risen among the body and are able to rightly divide the Word of truth. Much of the daily needs of the church are now handled by the Biem believers themselves. In the near future the church is looking towards two major events. The first is the appointment of the first Biem Church Elders. They move towards the official appointment of these men to shepherd the church in the years to come with great excitement! The second is a church planting outreach to one of the neighboring islands. This will be the first major outreach the church has undertaken and it will cost them much. Families will have to leave the only home they’ve ever known (Biem) and move to live among the target group. Pray that God will illuminate the road for the church to walk on, and that he’d strengthen the families that will be sent out. Continue to pray as His Church on Biem grows in unity and maturity. Pray also for the unbelievers – that God will overcome their opposition so many more may be added to the bride of Christ.

Food for Thought…A Challenge to be Thinking Christians

For some reason God made it easy for me to memorize. When I was a boy, I memorized a lot of meaning-less stats on the back of baseball cards and the nutrition information on the side of cereal boxes. Why? Because I liked numbers and could. Now that I’m following Jesus, I can use that to know him better and commit Scripture to memory.

Unfortunately, not everyone has it easy as I do. Some people can’t remember other people’s names, where they parked their car, or Bible verses without blood sweat and tears. And that is okay! God made us all different, and those who cannot memorize Scripture as effortlessly as I can might find a few of the following practical tips helpful.

10 Practical Tips for Memorizing Scripture:

1. Memorize the Word of God in community.

With a small group or with the larger congregation, memorizing Scripture as a community is a powerful way to learn the Bible together through pursuing mutual goals with accountability. Push each other to memorize the Word of God more. This is one way to live out Proverbs 27:17: “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”

2. Memorize along with your family.

Memory verses are not just for kids! If your children participate in programs like AWANA and memo-rize Bible verses, invite the whole family to memorize together. This is a great way to teach the whole family the truth of the Bible.

3. Use note cards.

When you encounter a Bible verse you want to put to memory, make verse cards and place them in noticeable areas of your house or workplace: on the bathroom mirror, in your living room, or on your refrigerator. Some people even memorize Scripture in the shower!

Deuteronomy 6:8-9 says we are to bind God’s commands on our hands, on the doorposts of our houses, and on our gates so that they are constantly reminding us of God and his commands. When we post verses all around our house, we are able to more frequently meditate on God’s word, which helps us renew our minds.

4. Listen to an audio Bible.

A good way to redeem the time is to listen to Scripture while in the car, at the gym, or cooking. This is an ideal method for memorizing longer passages of Scripture and to set your mind on things above (Colossians 3:2).

Food for Thought…A Challenge to be Thinking Christians (Cont.)

A good sermon can ingrain the truths of Scripture in your head as well. By downloading the Unlocking the Bible podcast, mobile app, or by listening to the Daily Broadcast, you are taught God’s Word in an encouraging and refreshing way. Faith in Christ does come by hearing, right?

5. Pray for God to help you.

God is the one who commands that we know Scripture and let it dwell in us, so would he not answer a prayer to see his will done? Pray to God for help, pray to God for guidance, pray to God for understand-ing, pray to God for a deeper love for his Word.

• Pray Psalm 119:33: “Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end.” • Pray Psalm 119:35: “Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight.” • Pray John 16:13: “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.”

Pray for illumination and help. God will answer!

6. Study a passage of Scripture deeply.

I have found that when I pour myself over one portion of Scripture for days and weeks at a time, I can memorize a passage fairly easily. Reading the same set of verses over and over again will not only draw out riches from God’s Word, but it will engrave those verses on your heart through repetition and deep meditation.

Suggested passages to start studying are Romans 8; Psalm 1; Ephesians 2:1-10; Ephesians 6:10-20; John 3

7. Find resources to help.

Scripture memory? There’s a mobile app for that! There are many websites and programs that can help you memorize Scriptures by providing plans and tools for your aid. Popular ones include MemVerse, Remember Me, Fighter Verses, and MobilizeFaith.

8. Put Scripture to song.

Chances are you know the ABC’s because of the alphabet song, or you know the major music scale (Do-Re-Mi…) because of The Sound of Music. Getting a song stuck in your head is proof that music is a powerful tool to help memorization. That is why putting the Bible to song or listening to music filled with biblical lyrics is a useful way to internalize the Word of God.

9. Always be on the lookout.

During your normal study of Scripture, or while you are listening to a sermon, be on the lookout for good verses to memorize. Having fresh scriptures to meditate on will deepen your understanding of God and knowledge of his Word.

Recently after reading about the Gibeonite deception in Joshua 9, verse 14 stuck out to me, describing why Israel made a bad decision: “…but did not ask counsel from the LORD.” That was a verse I wrote out, thought about throughout the day, and memorized.

10. Read Scripture out loud or write it down.

Reading out loud is a common tip for how to best memorize. It is one of the best memorization methods because it combines two learning styles: visual and auditory. Writing out the scriptures is another way to memorize because it targets two learning styles as well: visual and tactile.
