Everything about Spring screams life. What a fragrant reminder of all that our Creator has accomplished through the work of His hands. Now, we as a church must follow suit as we breathe in a “newness of life” through our worship, ministry, and devotion to our Triune God. If you have been with us during our worship time, you will know that we have started making our way through the pages of Philippians. Paul’s letter to the church at Philippi is one of commendation, encouragement, and prayer. Throughout his epistle, Paul, with great boldness and conviction, challenges the local church to be excellent. In doing so, Paul also establishes for them the framework of being a healthy church. Certainly I am intrigued by Paul’s words and I wholeheartedly plan on fleshing out these marks of a healthy church as I lead through this series. However, as I type this, I am reminded that we too have a solid biblical idea of what it means to be a healthy church. We too have made a pledge to one another through a covenant with Jesus Christ and His Church. So rather than sit at my computer and reinvent the wheel, allow me to remind you of what and who we are called to be: In the spirit of love, we have banded together to form this local church, a body of those upon whom the call of God rests to witness to the grace and truth of God. Because we believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, we will seek to bring every phase of our lives under His Lordship. We unreservedly and with abandon commit our lives and destiny to Christ, promising to give Him authority in all affairs of life. We will seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. We believe that God is the total owner of our lives and resources. We give God the throne in relation to the material aspects of our lives. Because God is a lavish giver, we too shall be lavish and cheerful in our regular gifts. We commit ourselves, regardless of the expenditure of time, energy, and money, to become informed and mature Christians. We will seek to be Christ-led in all relations with our fellow men and women and with other nations, groups, classes, and races. We commit ourselves to watch over one another in Christian love, to pray for each other, and to aid one another in sickness and distress. We recognize that the function of this local church is to glorify God in adoration and sacrificial service and to be God’s missionaries in the world, bearing witness to God’s redeeming grace in Christ Jesus. Hello Church, Happy Spring! I love this time of year. April 2019 WHY DIDN’T HE STAY? Phillip Yancy wrote in his book, THE JESUS I NEVER KNEW this paragraph that grabbed my attention: “Jesus left few traces of himself on earth. He wrote no books or even pamphlets. A wanderer, he left no home or belongings that could be enshrined in a museum. He did not marry, settle down, and begin a dynasty. We would, in fact, know nothing about him except for the traces he left in human beings. That was His design.” We will be celebrating Easter this month-crucifixion, resurrection, and soon after the ascension. He is gone, no physical presence on the earth. He was here. Incarnate-God in human form. He lived and as John the disciple reported, they saw him, they touched him, they heard him. They first hand saw how God operated in living color. He taught, He demonstrated, He related, He told them, “You have seen me, you have seen the Father”. Why didn’t He stay? We certainly could have benefitted seeing God in action. We could have experienced what his love is all about. We could have observed him forgive those who misused him. We could watch how he treated the outcast and unloved. Here’s a thought –He is present-in flesh and blood. He said,”When that day comes, you will know that I am in my Father and that you are in me, just as I am in you.” He is incarnate in us. No, we don’t become gods or a god. But he lives with us and in us and we become his hands to help, his heart to love, his eyes to see, his ears to hear, his feet to go. Growing up, we sang ‘Let others see Jesus in you’. Sobering thought if you reflect upon it. That means there is a purpose and a passion for us every day, everywhere. Maybe it would be good for us at the end of every day, to ask ourselves, did anyone see Jesus in me today? You are the salt of the earth, light of the world. That’s us, that’s Him. Cliff Richardson

The Calcium-Magnesium Dance

Continuing on with the subject of minerals, this month we’ll discuss calcium. We’ve all heard that you must drink milk for strong bones, but could it be the high calcium intake is having the opposite effect? Yes! That’s because #1: we don’t get near enough magnesium and #2: we consume calcium in excess. Some of us may even take a calcium supplement, but the body wasn’t designed to take supplemental calcium. The fact is, without magnesium, calcium will not work properly. For example, magnesium is responsible for the creation of new bone. Calcium alone will create a fragile bone structure. Consider a stick of chalk which you can snap in half…it’s just calcium carbonate. Calcium supplementation can lead to deposits in joints, kidneys, cardiac tissues and more because the excess calcium must go somewhere! Again, without the appropriate and ideal 1:1 ratio of calcium to magnesium, the calcium will begin to deposit throughout our body. Worse yet, when we consume too much calcium, our wise body thinks we have even less magnesium than we do because the ratio is extreme. My suggestion to you is take a quality magnesium supplement along with magnesium rich foods (see last month’s article or reach out to me), and get your calcium via diet only. This subject covers so much more than this little article has room for, so I highly encourage you to read The Magnesium Miracle by Dr. Carolyn Dean. By Jennifer Leffler, CNT
