Pastor’s Message Barry Dagenhart, Senior Pastor

As you will read elsewhere in this newsletter, the upcoming Easter season always involves extra music/anthems/songs in worship during Palm Sunday and Easter services. This emphasis on music reminds me to inform you about the results of a special committee of the Session that has concluded its work. Back in 2018, the Session appointed a Music Ministry Structure Committee to study and bring to fruition an organizational chart for the various music ministries of the church (as well as personnel involved) that would help us move forward in the future as ministries continue to grow and/or other ministries are added – many of which involve music.

Why was this special committee needed? The short answer is that the number of our ministries has grown, and our one part-time Music Director cannot do everything. For example, in the past ten years alone, we have added monthly Just Joy services that require music, the Preschool has music integrated into their curriculum as well as music at their monthly family chapel services, and we have joint services from time to time with Mt. Prospect that involve music/choirs, etc. We also have many volunteer musicians that serve at the 9:00 a.m. service and they need leadership and guidance. Our former associate filled this role with the early service musicians as part of his call, but of course, he is no longer with us.

All of this and more led the session to appoint this committee comprised of several elders and several at-large members from the congregation. We appreciate their work over several months and their organizational chart was approved at the March meeting of the Session. Without printing the entire chart, the basic structure involves the part-time music director we have now who will continue to play the organ and direct the adult choir and carry out many of the other duties he presently does – like the budget, working with the children’s choir director, scheduling tuning, purchasing music, scheduling guest musicians, etc.

Alongside of the Music Director, will also be a Music Ministries Coordinator, who will also most likely be part-time. This person will offer leadership and guidance to the early service musicians, will either provide leadership or coordinate volunteer musicians for Just Joy services, the Preschool, joint services, etc., including any new ministries that require music. We do not have this position in the 2019 budget, but we hope to be able to add this position soon. The Professional Staff committee along with the Music Director and myself will be involved in finding this person when the budget allows. I hope you will be in prayer for this process that will aid the music ministry of the church in the future.

also an outreach for Preschool families, Just Joy friends, and All American Athletes.

and change, and bring it to church Easter morning.

Following the 9:00 service, the congregation will gather on the front lawn to decorate the cross

with flowers; afterwards, the children release their

butterflies (weather permitting.)

Covered Dish Lunch

A Note from:

Patrick Robinson, Director of Music

The adult choir has been hard at work preparing special music for Palm Sunday at 11:00. Included on this special day will be an additional time of choral worship with the choir singing numerous anthems along with a professional string quartet and piano. We have been working very hard to learn several beautiful new anthems, including Nearer My God to Thee and And Can it Be? by Dan Forrest, How Much I Owe by John Hudson, and Prayer to Jehovah by Molly Ijames. These moving selections are sure to become favorites of the congregation!

On Easter, we will welcome a visiting brass Quartet for our 11:00 service as we celebrate the resurrection of our Savior. Anthems, Hymns, and special music for brass and pipe organ will all reflect the joy of this special day!

The adult choir has grown in the last few months to number 45 singers! We are blessed with many talented members who are thrilled to honor God through the gift of beautiful choral music!

The 9:00 service on Palm Sunday will feature additional congregational singing and some special music as well!

Mark your calendars and plan to join us on Palm Sunday and Easter!

This summer at VBS, kids will connect with God and grow stronger in their faith as they discover God is WILD about them!

As kids explore Psalm 139, they’ll experience God listening to them… God watching over them… and God loving them— no matter what! Plus, PandaMania is fun!

Classes will be available for 3 year old’s-5th graders. There will be many opportunities for all ages to serve. Stay tuned for ways you can help.

Spring HARPs Luncheon Tuesday, April 9 // 12:00 p.m. // Robinson Hall

Come enjoy a catered luncheon followed by a

special program presented by Rev. Sam McGregor,

pastor at Allison Creek Presbyterian Church.

Elias Hill: Journey from Enslavement in York County,

Testimony against the KKK, and Migration to Liberia in 1871

Allison Creek Presbyterian Church has a story to tell, one that they began uncovering 15 years ago when they identified the grave sites of 300 slaves who were buried near their church cemetery in the 1800s. A beautiful walking trail has been built on that site, one that pays respect to the slaves who died and were

buried there. Elias Hill was one of the slaves who was beaten by the Ku Klux Klan, testified in court in York against those who beat him, but who knew that it was not safe for him and his family to stay in the area. Elias Hill lead a migration of 166 former slaves to Liberia and many of those who migrated became suc-

cessful merchants, farmers and coffee growers there.

In 2017 Allison Creek Presbyterian held a festival to commemorate this forgotten history and to unveil the first South Carolina marker to recognize the atrocities of the KKK in York County. A small group of de-

scendants of the slaves who migrated to Liberia came for the festival.

Please join friends at First ARP for lunch and this interesting program. Lunch cost is $10.

RSVP by April 6 to Jan Phillips (803-984-0192) or by signing up on a sign-up sheet in the Connector, T-Hall, or Sunday School classroom.

Spring Youth Retreats

Our Middle School students had a wonderful weekend retreat at Bonclarken March

22nd-24th! Among all of the fun activities like participating in the basketball

tournament, disc golf and the zip-line, our students were encouraged to consider what it means to be a part of the Church body.

Bryan Bult, Associate Pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC (and a

former Associate Pastor of First ARP), preached four messages about “Why we go to Church.” Our students were blessed to

have David & Kayleen Rankin chaperone and would like to thank them for their eagerness

to serve our Church!

Our High School students enjoyed a terrific weekend at Bonclarken March 1st-3rd! Not

only did we have fun at ‘almost Midnight’ bowling and a late night Waffle House Trip,

but we also were enriched through the teaching of God’s Word by Zack Keuthan,

Associate Pastor at Reformation ARP Church in Hendersonville, NC.

Zack led us through a study of the question “If God is real why does he sometimes feel so far away?” It was a great weekend for

our students to wrestle with the storms they go through in life and understanding that Jesus can calm all storms in the world and

within our hearts.

Upcoming Youth Dates

DISCIPLES AND WARRIORS Sundays in the Faith Room from 4:30-6:00 p.m. April 7-June 30 (except Easter & Mother’s Day)

A letter from Mike Ridge to the men of First ARP…

Just Joy Event Just Joy is excited to work with Rock Hill School District 3 to host a Parent University for families

who have children in the Exceptional Education program.

This event will take place on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 pm.

The School District is responsible for the majority of the events of the night, but volunteers are needed to help serve.

Please contact Jamey Dagenhart ([email protected]) for more information.

Dear Brothers in Christ,

I am sure you are familiar with Matthew 28:19-20 where our Lord tells us to go and make disciples, teaching them to obey His commands. We have an opportunity to grow together in our spiritual walk and callings, to be mature in our understanding and application of Scripture and to fully embrace the callings God has issued to every Christian man.

Please consider and pray about attending the three month training and equipping course on “Disciples and Warriors” which will begin Sunday, April 7th from 4:30-6:00 p.m. here at the church in the Faith Room (with the big circular window.) This will be 11 weeks (stopping for Easter and Mother’s Day) ending on June 30th.

George Coxhead reminded me that man was made for the Sabbath to rest and be refreshed in the Lord and in His Word, so I hopefully and sincerely ask you to sign up and come join other men in training and learning and fellowshipping together.

There is a great benefit for men of all ages— from High School to Senior Saints.

Very graciously, yours in Christ,

Michael B. Ridge

What does it look like to serve God as a single on the mission field?

A special article by:

Rebekah Carson (one of our Jubilee Birthday Ladies)

After serving on staff at a church for several years, the Lord prompted me to begin earnestly seeking a place of service abroad. Then, the Lord

opened the door to partner with World Witness in Germany. Although I clearly sensed God’s call and truly wanted to go, I still remember feeling a

bit overwhelmed and disappointed that I would be headed over alone without a spouse or children. I vividly remember sitting on the porch of

the Bonclarken hotel with a close friend and processing things proceeding differently than I had subconsciously imagined. I shed a few tears and we prayed together. I very much wanted to go to Berlin, but had to let go of

my other hopes and accept God’s plans.

A beautiful promise in God’s Word encouraged my heart as I prepared to head overseas. Luke 18:29-30 says, “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or

children for the sake of the kingdom of God will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.” God not only provided a very special family for me, but also roommates, neighbors,

teammates and dear friends to share life with in Berlin.

The Lord has unique plans for all of us. Over the years I have come to realize and appreciate more and more the beauty of how the Lord uses missionaries in diverse stages of life. All stages have their specific challenges as well

as their specific joys. Together as the Body of Christ we mutually offer love, community and practical acts of service that display the Kingdom of God and life in His Family to a world in desperate need of the Gospel.

Your prayers over the past 14 years are making a difference in Berlin! May we continue to trust in His faithfulness and continue asking Him to do above and

beyond what we could ask or imagine for His glory!

Praise God for the persevering prayers of His people and the joy of seeing concrete answer to prayer!

Please continue praying for: • 10% of our community to come to Christ by 2030 • The Lord to raise up workers for the harvest (especially for the children & youth)—a new minis-

try initiative preparing to launch this fall in a high-needs neighborhood • The process of becoming a particularized church and calling a national pastor--the candidate

we'd been interviewing recently withdrew his application. We are thankful for God's clear leading and are expectant He will provide.

“Brandon and I are so happy to be joining First ARP. We both were born and raised in Rock Hill. We met each oth-er at Rock Hill High and have been together since! I grew up at Neely's Creek ARP and Bran-don grew up going to First Baptist.

In high school Brandon began attending Neely's Creek with my family (Jane & Steve Southwell, joined First ARP December 2018). We both graduated from Clemson University (Brandon '13 and Sally '14). We got married in 2014 and will be celebrating our 5th anniversary on May 31st!

Brandon has a degree in Business and is currently the Sales & Installation Manager at York County Natural Gas Company. I attended graduate school at Winthrop, after Clemson, and received my Masters in School Counseling. I am currently the School Counselor at Finley Road Elementary School.

We both love working out, the beach, being around family and friends, and cheering on our Clemson Tigers! We are so thankful to be a part of this wonderful church family.” -Sally Southwell Berger Brandon & Sally Berger
