    Chapter — 1

    Introduction

Media is the fastest and most popular source of information for the masses in the world

today. While we are watching TV or listening to the radio or reading a newspaper or magazine,

media is shaping our opinions and attitudes. Media makes the public discourse and thereby

shapes our political, cultural, and economic priorities and affiliations. Media also determines and

shapes the roles of men and women in society.

    MEDIA IN PAKISTAN

The rapid development of communication and infrastructure development in Pakistan

during the last decade has provided the masses with access to a lot more information. n turn,

media has an increased influence over the masses through which it is able to shape the ideas,

values, behavior, and concepts of the general public. Many privately owned commercial radio

stations and TV channels have been launched, and as e!pected, the information being delivered

to the masses is both positive and negative manner. t has influenced the young Pakistani

    generation to the ma!imum e!tent.

"uring the last decade, media has become stronger and more influential in Pakistan due to the

rapid development of communication technologies and infrastructure development. Many

privately owned commercial radio stations and TV channels have been launched. Today media is

providing the masses with a lot of information, which is both positive and negative. The media#s

power to influence masses has also increased through which it is able to shape the ideas, values,

behavior and concepts of the general public. $nfortunately, most newspapers, magazines, TV

channels, and radio stations do not follow a commonly accepted code of ethics.

Women are under%represented in top positions and are well represented at the lower levels

in media houses. Management tends to ignore women &ournalists when it comes to hard news

beats, such as politics and the economy. These are the assignments, which help &ournalists get

     promotions to managerial positions.

gnoring women in the media, their insufficient presentation, and embodying them in

specific roles continues to be a global issue. 'emale segments of society are thought to be

e(ually represented. )owever, there used to be time when &ournalism was considered to be

entirely a male profession. Women in this profession were looked down and had to deal with

issues that female &ournalists in today#s society don#t have to deal with but it is still an

assumption. *urrently women in &ournalism from +hyber pakhtunkhwa are struggling to earn

their e(ual rights and hopefully they will eventually succeed. till it is an established fact that the

women who &oined &ournalism when it was strikly a male dominated profession paved the way

for the young female &ournalists of today by showing males that females can be &ust as effective

as them in the field of &ournalism. t is very apparent that even though women in this relatively

backward region, currently have more rights than they did several decades ago as compare to

other professions but, in the field of &ournalism they still have a long distance to get e(ual rights.

cholars were initially of the opinion that &ournalist was totally a male &ob and that it would be

too dangerous to be considered for any female.

    Significance of the study

The research would establish awareness among respondents as well as readers about the

problems that woman &ournalists faced in society because of woman#s unrealistic portrayal in

media at large. This study would be a guide line for further researchers related to the challenges

faced by female &ournalists at different levels. t is not at all an easy &ob to be a &ournalist being a

woman. This study salutes to the courage and patience to all the brave and fearless women

     &ournalists.

Through this study researcher realized that how media should portray woman in real sense with

respect as a human beings not as show piece. May be through this research -overnment and o

their media institutes pay attention to the media#s portrayal of woman and provide them such

environment in which they feel comfortable and do better work which convey a good impression

to our new generations and common woman.

    O!ecti"es of the Study

This research topic have some main and basic uni(ue ob&ective like

    • To e!plore main problems faced by female &ournalistreporters

    • To highlight the support of the family being a media person

    • To know about the security problems during the crime event or conflict reporting on the

    crime scenes.

    • To know about the workplace environment of different TV channels and their personal

    e!periences being a female reporter.

    Purpose

The basic purpose of my research is to identify the core problems faced by female

reporters in /ournalism. 0eing a &ournalist myself, have seen them facing a lot of problems but

making them realize through talking was my main goal. t is the case very often that women

don#t realize that they are mal treated due multi faceted issues. strongly feel that have made

them realize and this realization will enable them solve their own problems

    #esearch Ethics

The research is under the rule regulation of social and culture values and norms. This research

study is limited to female reporters&ournalists of different tv channels of Peshawar. The sample

size of research is only Ten respondents because of (ualitative nature of the research. n this

perfect research work. Time was the biggest limitation as am a full time working &ournalist

myself. The sample size of this research was only 12 respondents because of (ualitative research.

Therefore, the findings cannot be generalized to the whole population. The finding of the

research are only restricted to those peoples only who are the part of the research and provided

information but it can be help full in providing the basis for future research. n this research few

aspects of media#s portrayal about woman are studied due to limited time and resources.

     Organi&ation of the Study

Working woman or female reporters. n Pakistan are prone to lot of denomination and this is

woman reporters may seen to be respected out worthily. 0ut when we sit and discuss a report

    My opinion

The e!%researchers emphasized on the issue of female reporters that if a female reporter has a

beautiful face so only she can work in &ournalism field. 0ut am opponent of this. There is no

need of pretty face in &ournalism. f she has does not e!perience, confidence and trust. n my

point of you if a female &ournalist is much pretty and she does not has the ability of &ournalism

faces has been given by the side of 5lmighty 5llah. 5llah looks to your struggle not to face. o

nspite of that have not feeling scared yet and not even myself weak. 0ecause myself

    Chapter — :

    Discussion

    DISC4SSION

My personal opinions on this research is that media has great impact on our lives. Women#s

participation in media is very necessary. Ma&ority of the respondents were of the view that man

and women both e(ually run the institution of media.

Women can better understand only a women. t#s not possible that women is e!changed from

media. The researcher observed during the research that ma&ority of respondent truly agree that

women is an important part of media and feel happiness. That media is un coupled without them

no one want to see only men in T.V all the time. Women use in media for attraction. Media can

not run without women because whole story runs around the women media women giving

messages to other girls that they become modern media encourage women and teenage should be

modern media also focus on this onatter. 0ut we have certain norms and value we also have to

consider them. 5ccording to these values modernization is acceptable otherwise not.

The presence of women in media is to improve herself. n old days women was consider as a

has changed our status, now we can come out from our homes. 5s long as traditional roles were

present et is true that women are shown on TV according to their gender roles, as like that men

are handling the outdoor work and women are taking care of their children and home. 0ut

nowadays media is getting side from it like women is driving and running her bouti(ues, or

    Conc+usion'

The research main of theme is that to highlight the female &ournalists problems faces in an

electronic media. 'emale /ournalists have many problems in an electronic media the first

problem is that they are not protected in this field because they given the treats. 0y unknown

people. The reason is that the &ournalism field is private therefore they are not secure form the

office side moreover, they are 4istricted from the family side. nitially they have many problems

from the female. 0ecause in our society don#t let them to work as a &ournalist. The another

problem is the transportation problem. They don#t have the facility of picking up and dropping.

Therefore they spend much time for waiting they vehicles. 5nd they can not reach at the e!act

time to office and the reporting place most of female &ournalists have the less salary problems.

When they demand for increasing the salary. o then they are told that if you work on this salary

so come otherwise we don#t need you. n &ournalism filed they are not given the &ob however due

to the oblighation they agree to work on less salary. The ne!t problem is that they do not have fi!

schedule for going and leaving. f their office starting time is =I99 am to ?I99 PM. 0ut they

cannot leave the office at the e!act time. *ause of emergency press conference, bomb blasting,

accidents, protests and so many issues.

They &ealous from each others. f one has beauty so the another one &ealous form her. They try to

find each other weakness. pecially male reporter to female so therefore a lot of female &ournalist

leave their field of &ournalism, due to these ma&or problems occur with them. 7owadays female

students don#t come to &ournalism field. 0ecause they know that they will faces these problems

so that#s why they are not interested to &oin this filed there is no proper training for &ournalists

they can easily come to this filed they &ust graduated form the university and without training

&oin this field. o these are the ma&or problems which female &ournalists have in &ournalism field.

/ournalism field work and theoretical is so much different when female &ournalist department

students come to they &ournalism filed they face so many problems because the theory and the

study e!periences not to helpful in &ournalism filed. o &ournalism department provided proper

     practical training in department.

    Suggestion

    1. The government should provide the security to female &ournalists and as well as male

     &ournalists.

    8. The organization should arrange the transportation@. The should be proper training center to teach young and in e!perienced students about

basic components in &ournalism .?. "iscrimination against female reporters should be concisely minimized by the senior

there should be no limitation for them and be given any type of beat. 3ike education,

crime, coarts reporting, health, reporting conflict reporting, sports 4eporting, protest and

    religious reporting.

    2. The bureau chief, assignment editor show good manner on behavior with female

     &ournalists.

    >. They should not given the &ob by beauty. The should give the &ob by talent, e!perience, or

marit.:. 0eing a &ournalist know that the number of crimes are increase in society so therefore

the number of female &ournalists should be increased because they will highlights the
