Lots 2129-2131 belong to the collection of Ladislas Hudak, a diplomat for Czechoslovakia who emigrated to Canada after the war. Hudak was Consul General in Marseilles from 1945-1948. He left the consulate and his post when the Communists took over the Czechoslovak government in 1948 and lived in Roque Brun Cap Martin in the South of France until 1951. Prior to 1945 he had postings in Romania, and also worked in Corporate Law based in Prague.
The artists collected by Hudak reflect his geographic whereabouts during this period, and a demonstrated eye for important modern art. Romanian artist Nicolae Tonitza and Czech artist Othon Coubine are both revered figures within their respective national cultural heritage.
Nicolae Tonitza
Nicolae Tonitza was born in Barlad in 1885 and spent his early career studying at the Academy of Belle-Arts in Iași. He spent time in Munich, France and Italy developing his artistic skills, before returning to Romania in 1911. Tonitza was drafted into the First World War in 1916 and fell prisoner to the Bulgarians during the Battle of Turtucaia. He was released in 1918.
It was after the War that Tonitza developed the style for which he is most well-known: portraits painted in the post-impressionist and expressionist style du jour with vibrant and vigorous palettes. More specifically, it is his juxtaposition of somber and melancholic subjects set against decorative, colourful backgrounds and motifs for which he is most celebrated. The harmony in which he is able to synthesize these elements, resulting in poetic compositions full of romanticism, defined the painter.
In the 1930s, upon his discovery of Balchik, a coastal town on the Black Sea, Tonitza began to incorporate Orientalist themes inspired by the Turk and Tatar inhabitants of the town. Between 1933-1938 Tonitza painted a large number of characters on this spot. The result, a fresh oeuvre that reflected his connection with ‘the simple man’ and the picturesque that shrouded the poor Tatar slum. Tonitza would remain preoccupied with the Orientalist theme until his death in 1940.
Othon Coubine
Otakar Kubin, known in France as Othon Coubine, was born in Boskovice in 1883. After studying at Academy of Fine Arts, Prague (1900-1904). Coubine travelled to Holland and Belgium before settling in in Provence, France, where he would spend 40 years of his life. France became his second home and the landscape his lifelong inspirational source. Considered a member of artistic movement known as The Paris School (L’École de Paris) Coubine is one of the few Czech artists who have earned their recognition abroad. His artistic style evolved from neo-impressionism through expressionism and cubo-expressionism, which helped him develop his particular style based on the influences of the new classicism. Coubine’s embrace of neoclassicism launched him into the French post-war movement called “Return to Order” (Retour à l’ordre), which was in direct competition with the aesthetics of his contemporary and friend, Pablo Picasso. Coubine’s landscapes are also recognized for use of light, understood as a unifying element.
In 1925 Coubine settled in Aix-En-Provence, approximately 50 km north of Provence, where Cézanne also lived and painted. Here he discovered the landscape of the hills and valleys, fields of lavender, olive trees and almond trees, not only for himself, but even for the French, who rewarded this by adding him to their foremost painters. Coubine returned to Czechoslovakia in 1952 but after 12 years, he decided to return to France, where he died in 1969.

OTAKAR (OTHON) COUBINE (CZECH, 1883–1969)Chapel in Simiane(Kaplička v Simiane)Oil on canvasSigned lower right
Size: 20 x 24 in. (51 x 61 cm)Provenance: Estate of Ladislas Hudak, Ottawa, ON; By descent.
Expertise provided by Rea Michalová, Ph. D., Art Historian and Curator:The painting depicts the town of Simiane-la-Rotonde, a Provençal hilltop village, named after the medieval rotunda (donjon) crowning a cluster of homes on a rocky cliff. The artist purchased a house in Simiane and payed tribute to the architecture and beauty of the town in many of his paintings. Michalova writes: “Here he discovered the landscape of the hills and valleys, fields of lavender, olive trees and almond trees, not only for himself, but even for the French, who rewarded this by adding him to their foremost painters… ‘Chapel in Simiane’ is a lyrical landscape, a powerful spell, an oasis of unbroken peace, stability, and noble harmony. The use of lemon and sulfur yellow, inspired by van Gogh, proves once again that Coubine, even in the classical period of “Return to Order” was able to embrace an expressive palette of colours”

OTAKAR (OTHON) COUBINE (CZECH, 1883–1969)Provencal Town(Provensálské Mestecko)Oil on canvasSigned lower right
Expertise provided by Rea Michalová, Ph. D., Art Historian and Curator:“The Provencal landscape of the hills and valleys, stone towns and monuments of old times, lonely farms, chapels with bells, olive trees and almond trees formed Coubine’s clas-sicism, a unique synthesis of knowledge and experience of classical traditions of France, modern Czech Landscapes and the entire Latin Mediterranean” This painting, dating from the 1930s, is a beautiful depiction of the French Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region, formerly called the Low Alps (Basses-Alpes). Writes Michalova, “The simple and content environ-ment of Provence, not affected by the dizziness and bustle of city life, allowed Coubine to develop his talent in his painting which are filled with tranquil classical beauty.” [Full assessment is available upon request in Czech and English].

Arthur Heming, the “Northern Chronicler” was an illustrator and writer, publishing three wilderness adven-ture stories, was an illustrator and writer, who published three wilderness adventure stories: Spirit Lake (1907), Drama of the Forests (1921), and The Living Forest (1925), and illustrated for many other Canadian and American publications in the first decades of the twentieth century. The subject of his illustrations fea-tured scenes of the North, often with dramatic action and magnificent beasts meant to appeal to readers of fiction. The Mountie was a staple of American fiction during this era and this example shows the Mountie in uniform with a hand drawn, thick border that was characteristic of his style, as found in Mooswa and Others of the Boundaries (William Alexander Fraser and Arthur Heming, 1900) for instance. One of the most remarkable aspects of Heming’s work in addition to the streamlined and perfected design in the tradition of the Arts and Crafts aesthetic, is the achromatic colour palette, a result of his diagnosis of colour blindness as a child. The marine subject matter of “Whalers in a Stormy Sea” is unusual for the artist, though in 1916 Heming published a series of whaling paintings in McLeans for which this canvas may have been prepared but never published. In his lifetime Heming was somewhat of an outcast from the traditional art world and was criticized by his contemporaries including members of the Group of Seven for being too commercial. While the dominant aesthetics of the time were centered on portraying an uninhibited, pure northern landscape, Heming, in the tradition of Paul Kane, George Catlin and others illustrator-reporters, was instrumental in defining how the world, and in particular, how Americans, came to understand the Canadian life and culture.
