Corey Pargo, Head Coach
Now in his second year at Start, Coach Pargo is the
12th
head football coach in Spartan history. His 2017
team finished the season 7-3 (5-0 in the City League)
and won their third straight City League
championship.
Coach Pargo previously worked with the football
team at St. John’s Jesuit High School for five years,
where he coached the defensive line and linebackers
as well as the throwers during track season. He also
coached at Rogers High School for ten years, also
coaching the D-line and linebackers and throwers.
He was one of the most accomplished players in City
League history when he was a fearsome defensive
tackle for the Rogers Rams from 1985 to ’87. He
was also an all-state shot putter and still holds the
Rogers school record. He went on to play at Ohio
State, made the final cut in 1992 for the Cleveland
Browns, and played for the Rhine Fire in the World
League of American Football.
Coach Pargo is currently a Campus Protection
Officer at Start High School, and was also a
paraprofessional for TPS for 14 years. He and his
wife, Julie, reside in West Toledo, and he has four
children: sons Walter, Will, and Corey, Jr., and
daughter Genevieve.

ATHLETIC STAFF
Mike Johnson
Athletic Director
Now in his fifth year at Start High School, Mike
Johnson has overseen tremendous success and growth.
Physical improvements include the installation of
FieldTurf, repainting the basketball floor, extensive
wall art throughout the athletic wing and the “green
mile”, and reinstallation of championship photos from
the old Start High School. Success on the field has
been tremendous, with ten of Start’s fourteen varsity
sports winning at least one city championship.
Johnson came to Start from Waite, where he had been
a special education teacher and spent two years in the
intern consultant program. He is a graduate of
Cardinal Stritch High School and played one year of
baseball at Siena Heights University before
transferring to Bowling Green for his bachelor’s and
master’s degrees.
Bart Mefferd
Assistant Athletic Director
Coach Mefferd is the hardest-
working man at Start. Besides
teaching and acting as assistant
AD, he is the girls’ cross country
coach, an assistant basketball
coach, an assistant track coach, and
an accomplished long-distance
runner who has completed multiple
marathons and half-marathons.
Samantha Smith
Trainer
Smith is pursuing a master’s degree
in physical training at the
University of Toledo, and earned
her bachelor’s of physical training
at Ohio University. A native of
Sandusky, she participated in
volleyball, softball, and
cheerleading.
Jesse Squire
Announcer & Sports Information
A third-generation Start teacher,
Squire hosts a weekly podcast
covering Start athletics. Besides
working Start football games, he is
the PA announcer for all collegiate
track and cross country meets at
Toledo, Bowling Green, and Tiffin,
and has announced meets in seven
states and two countries.

TRADITIONS
FIGHT SONG In the city of Toledo
There’s a high school known to all
We’re right at the top of honors
But we also play football.
Start High teams are never beaten
All through the games they fight
Fight for the only colors
Gold and White.
Smash right through that line of <color>
Watch the points keep growing
Start High teams are bound to win
We’re fighting with a vim!
Rah! Rah! Rah!
See that line is weak-en-ing
We’re going to win this game
Fight! Fight! Rah! Team Fight!
Victory for Start High School!
Hey!
Traditions connect the past
to the present
to the future
ALMA MATER The Galaxies, Oh Alma Mater,
Shine in splendor down on thee.
With love, we bow our heads in honor,
Faithfulness and loyalty.
Hold the shield of valor higher,
Proud the royal colors fly.
In glory to the Alma Mater,
Dwelling of the brave and bold!
Glory to the Spartan Heroes!
Glory to the Green and Gold!
Win or lose, after every home game the football team joins the marching band
and sings the Alma Mater.

DAN SIMRELL STADIUM
Simrell Stadium is celebrating its 50
th season of Start football, soccer, and
track and field. This year it will be renamed in honor of the man who made
it possible, former head football coach Dan Simrell.
The current stadium looks vastly different from the one that hosted its first
game on September 12, 1969. When Roy C. Start High School opened in
the fall of 1962, it did not include a stadium, and for the first seven seasons
every football game was held away or at a neutral site.
Seating Capacity: 3,500
First Game: September 12, 1969
First Night Game: October 25, 1991
FieldTurf Installed: August 2018
Record Attendance: 4,000 (9/4/98)
Spartan Home Record: 121-103
Head coach Dan Simrell started a fund-raising campaign with a three-foot
tall metal barrel to collect spare change. The barrel read “A Penny A Day
So We Won’t Play Away.” Donations kept construction costs to a mere
$20,000 ($142,000 in today’s dollars); Pepsi-Cola paid for the scoreboard
and Toledo City Council funded the visitor’s side stands.
Spartan Stadium hosted dozens of City League and District championship
track meets over the years, including the first coed track meet of any kind
ever held in the state of Ohio (the 1972 City Championship). In 1989 the
track facilities were named in honor of Tom Inman, the longtime athletic
director and girls’ track coach whose “Golden Girls” won the 1980 state
track & field championship.
Night football was banned in the City League from 1964 into the 80s, so the
original stadium never had lights. Lights finally came to Spartan Stadium for
the 1991 Homecoming game after a two-year fundraising campaign by the
Lamplighters, a special committee of the Sideliners.
The stadium got a complete rebuild in the mid-2000s as part of the
construction of the new Start High School. Aging wooden bleachers were
replaced with modern metal seats that met ADA regulations, and a bigger
and better pressbox, restrooms, and concession stand were built from
scratch. FieldTurf was installed in August 2018.

POST-SEASON TEAMS
1978 City League Champions
Shoe Bowl Champions
The 1978 team was the first in Start history to be
crowned football City Champions. They ran
undefeated through the Red Division but entered
the Shoe Bowl as heavy underdogs to Bowsher,
an undefeated 10-0 team who had soundly beaten
the Spartans earlier in the year. Under the
tutelage of first-year head coach Pete Benedict,
the team trounced the Rebels in the championship
game by the score of 41 to 6.
It was just the beginning of a special year for an
amazing group of athletes. The core of the team
1978-79, including quarterback Bill Boddy, won
the triple crown: city championships in football,
basketball, and baseball. It was a first in the 52-
year history of the City League.
A 37-year championship drought was finally
broken in 2015. Not only did the team win the
City League title, they went 9-1 and qualified for
the OHSAA state playoffs for the first time in
school history.
The oddities of the playoff system meant the first
round game was held at Westerville Central High
School, on the outskirts of Columbus. Three
busses full of fans made the long trip to the game.
Spartan hopes took a hit when all-state running
back Stephon Watson tore his ACL on the first
play of the game, but quarterback Brandon
Winters picked up the slack and the team fought
hard before coming up short. The final score was
Westerville Central 49, Start 30.

From 1967 to 1990, the City League was split into Red and Blue Divisions and the division champions met in the Shoe Bowl.
From 1991 to present, the City League champion has been determined by regular season record, and the top two teams not qualifying
for the playoffs met in the Hall of Fame Game (1992-2010) or Shoe Bowl (2015-16).
The Ohio High School Athletic Association began its playoffs in 1972, when just 8 teams in each of three divisions qualified.
Since 1998, 32 teams in each of seven divisions qualify for the playoffs.
