CG Gallery proudly presents the exhibition Finding Ground. Intimes of turmoil and uncertainty you often feel an urge to keepyour anxiety at bay by grounding yourself and recalling whatreally matters. As gallerists we are inclined to call for art andrelationships.

The artists Matias Di Carlo and Jonathan "Ollio" Josefsson wereborn in the same year but on different continents. As of yet theyhave not met in person, but their distinct artistic expressionsclearly relate to and complement one another. Be it friction orfusion. Hard vs soft surfaces; straight vs wavy lines, mathematical precision vs formlessness, nature vs culture, ruralvs urban. Di Carlo and Ollio both seem to have found a groundedapproach to art and life.

CG has the privilege to exhibit Matias Di Carlo’s works inSweden through a unique agreement with Wadström TönnheimGallery in Marbella, Spain.

All works in the exhibition are available for purchase, prices including VAT.Prices in euro may change according to current exchange rate. For additional purchase information, contact [email protected].

Swedish artist Jonathan ”Ollio” Josefsson, best known for his graffiti art, beganexploring textile during his Master studies at the Academy of Art and Design inGothenburg, Sweden, in 2007. Inspired by his graffiti spray cans and theirsimilarity to a tufting machine, he began to also convey his visual language ontocarpets.

Cycling through colours, forms and (some of the most iconic) abstractions, theartist translates various everyday-life patterns into new swarming compositions, thus creating stories which he leaves for the viewer to interpret. Working with awide array of artistic expressions and techniques, Ollio’s creative practice centreson his intuition and improvisation as the leading forces, resulting in playful andimaginative textile works which clearly reveal the footprint of graffiti.

Ollio entered Gothenburg’s graffiti scene in the mid 90’s and soon became one ofits centre figures. By placing tags primarily in the industrial areas in the city’soutskirts, Ollio succeeded in conceptualising his expression. Eventually in 2013the City of Gothenburg granted the artist a cultural scholarship to place his tagsand graffiti paintings around the city.

Ollio was born in 1978 in Gothenburg, Sweden, where he still lives andworks. Hegraduated from the Academy of Art and Design in 2007 where he earned a BAand MFA in Textile art. Ollio´s art has been displayed in museums and galleriesin Sweden and internationally and he is represented in public and privatecollections. The artist is frequently commissioned to create large scale publicartworks. In 2020, Ollio together with two other artists, completed Gothenburg´slargest painting on the ground outside the Museum of World Culture.

“First time I encountered one of Matias Di Carlos sculpturesI was mesmerized and taken by its strong presence andessence of controlled raw wilderness. It was like he had notonly tamed the steel and equations in his powerfulsculptures but also been able to capture his honestconnection with nature.

Matias Di Carlo was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in1978. His Italian roots are imprinted with a long history inartistic ironsmith. Very soon Matias becomes the fourthgeneration to continue creating with metal and fire, takingit to the level of a sculptural language of his own.

Matias Di Carlo felt very early on in his life a closeconnection to nature and its elements, something whichbecame very evident especially during his trips to themountains in the Patagonian Andes. Back at home inBuenos Aires, he was taught to master fire and an array ofmetals, and very soon he transformed this knowledge intoa sculptural language of his own.

Matias dynamic works invites us to feel and experience thesounds released by the interaction of the density of matterand void space - the tension created between them reveals avirtuous vibration. The effect of light and shadow irradiatespoetry. As though a magnet, his rotund pieces attract thespectator to dive into them to discover the underlyinglayers and dimensions which surface one after another.

As Matias and his works keeps evolving, regardless itsmaterial and size, the poetry of mathematics, shapes and

shades are still of unique essence in his eternalized sculptures. It is with great pride and humbleness for nature I present andrepresent Matias Di Carlos dynamic and timeless work.”

GalleryBY CARLSTEIN-GASPARAVIČIŪTĖ“Matias Di Carlo’s works can best be described as playful

minimalism. Having worked through a highly disciplinedrigour of maquette making, sketching and understanding thecomplexities of form and their interaction in relation to thebody, he has provoked a visual form of mathematics and hasmanaged to show how it occupies volume in three-dimensional space. While much iron and steel as a materialappear at first impenetrable and inert, Di Carlo has mastered, through long periods of alchemic experimentation, tointroduce colour and warmth to the otherwise stark anduninviting surfaces. The patina that Di Carlo applies to hisCorten steel works are as much a reflection of the rusticcolours of the landscape of southern Spain as it is aconversation with the material itself, allowing it to speakfreely and in constant change.

As Matias Di Carlo has set the course to emerge as acontemporary sculptor, he has been able to free himself fromthe constrains of utility as well as academia to arrive at anintuitive and direct methodology in the creation of emotionthrough solid form. Through long periods of meditation inand with nature, many times alone in the wilderness formonths at a time, Di Carlo emerges with a holistic catalogueof thought, which is not only apparent but also physicallypresent in the rigorous forms of his sculptures. As with allthings in nature, there are hidden languages and truths. Theuniverse itself begins with a simple instruction and constantlystrives towards greater forms of complexity. Looking closelyat the sculptures of Matias Di Carlo, one has a sense that manyof the shapes and forms have already understood that thewhole is always made up of the sum of its parts.”
