In ancient times, the philosopher Socrates made a claim considered outlandish in his day.

He proposed that rather than being a gift from the gods (the conventional wisdom), human

happiness could be attained by living a life in harmony with the soul — that is, Anding and

doing our highest good. It sounds simple. But pinpointing our highest good — especially

with all the noise and distractions of modern life — can be a challenge. A survey conducted

last year conArms our current predicament, Anding that happiness is on the decline

worldwide. Luckily, each of us has the power to be more than a statistic.

If you could make a single change in your life, and because of it, be happier in 2020 and

beyond, would you make it? You can, it turns out.

Some years back, I found my own happiness on the decline. It wasn’t that I was entirely

“unhappy,” but I had a sense I could be much happier. I felt a longing for something, but I

was baffled: I was healthy. I felt well-rooted spiritually, in my home life, and in my career.

Something was missing but I didn’t know what. A friend told me about a program providing

food to families in need, and encouraged me to volunteer. I had doubts that volunteering

would make me happier, but I had nothing to lose and jumped in. To my surprise, collecting

and distributing food to people with real need was incredibly satisfying. The world’s

problems are big, but knowing I could do something small to help a few people was

inspiring, and empowering.

After a few months of volunteering, I really did start feeling happier. I looked forward to

picking up donations of everything from canned hams to perfectly good fruits and

vegetables (with a spot or two) that were being discarded at grocery stores, and to getting

them to people who would savor every bite. Who wouldn’t be elated at the smiles and

excitement of a hungry little boy or girl as they looked through their grocery bag? I got to

see this every time I volunteered. It was incredibly uplifting. Volunteering was transforming

my life.

All these good feelings made me want to do more. I decided I’d do something every day for

someone in need. I was inspired, too, to kick the commitment up a notch. I’d found a

Mother Teresa quote that rang true. “In this life we cannot do great things. But we can do

small things with great love.” I felt as though I’d been personally challenged. I set a goal to

think differently. As I served, I would make a conscious effort to be more observant, more

patient and kind — to grow in love. I was curious to see where that would take me.

It turned out that making good on that two-part commitment to loving service had an

almost magical effect. Day by day I felt more positive and energized. I also began to really

see and appreciate how fortunate I’d been in my own life, and because of that, how much I

had to give. I had never felt so grateful and content. This brand of volunteering —

conscious, loving, full-hearted giving to others — had replaced my longing with a deep

sense of satisfaction.

All that being said, beginning your own journey with volunteering isn't always as easy as

just stepping out your door and heading to nearest food bank. Volunteering can be

challenging, and even just building up the nerve to take the Arst step to Anding the

volunteering opportunity that works for you can require some some research and

consideration. Here's how you can — and why you should — get on the path to community

service.

First, the proven benefits of volunteering

As it turns out, science backs up the beneAts of helping others. Studies by United

Healthcare, Carnegie Melon University and others have revealed that people who volunteer

feel healthier. They are less likely to develop high blood pressure, which often leads to heart

attack and stroke. Even more dramatic is the connection between volunteering and

emotional health and well-being: People who volunteer report less stress, improved mood

and self-esteem, closer friendships, and a feeling of belonging. They report a powerful sense

of purpose, which in studies of the happiest people on earth, turns out to be key to

happiness — and as a bonus, to a longer life.

As another bonus, volunteering can have great beneAts for your career. Because so many

organizations are willing to train volunteers, volunteering lends itself as a way to learn new

job skills like project management, sales, and managing a team. If you’re between jobs or

looking to change jobs, volunteering is a great way to network with potential employers

while at the same time pumping up your resume with a pursuit that shows character.

If all these sound like good reasons to volunteer but you still feel intimidated or have

anxiety about working with strangers, or about how well you’ll do, you may need to lower

your expectations and give yourself a break. When I Arst began working with people who

were hungry and, for the most part homeless, I had my share of anxiety. I decided I’d take it

one step at a time at Arst, just show up with no expectation of continuing. If I wasn’t

enjoying the people I was working with, I could always try volunteering elsewhere. As for

my self-doubt, I lowered my anxiety by deciding I would do my best, and let my best be

enough. The small victories — like Anding lots of great food donations and the appreciation

expressed by the people we served — inspired me to keep volunteering. Soon, I couldn’t

wait for Saturday mornings to come.

How to get started

So how do you get started volunteering? Like other goals in life, Arst, you need to set your

intention. Once you are convinced you want to make a change in your life and volunteering

is the change you’d like to try — if it’s for health, mental health, career beneAts or just

because you want to help others — you are half way there.

Next you’ll need to decide what kind of volunteering you’d like to do. There are, literally,

millions of opportunities. In fact, according to Guidestar, the non-proAt go-to guide for the

U.S., there are more than 2.5 million registered non-proAt organizations in the U.S. alone.

But don’t let the sea of need freeze you. Instead of taking your cues from outside yourself,

decide what you’re passionate about and And a volunteer opportunity that matches. If you

like books and reading, perhaps you can help at your local library or read to children in

shelters. Have skills in art? You could easily pass those on to someone who might not be

able to afford art-school classes but shares an equal passion. Ultimately, if it’s feeding the

hungry, sharing time with people who are lonely, working with animals or something else,

you’ll know your next right step by the excitement you feel when you think about doing it.

Listen to your passion. It will give you the energy you’ll need to get started, and you’ll be

more likely to continue.

Time and Place

Once you’ve zeroed in on what kind of volunteering you’d like to do, you’ll need to think

about how much time you have to dedicate. Having a few hours a week to volunteer versus

a few days, or a week or more at a time, will be a factor in what kinds of opportunities are

available to you. Helping a home-bound neighbor get groceries, for example, may be an

hour-long commitment twice a week, where sharing your talents in a foreign country might

become the full two weeks of your summer vacation.

In my experience, starting locally and with a commitment of just a few hours each week

was a good strategy. I got my feet wet with the hunger project volunteering just a half day

each Saturday. It was a commitment I didn’t trouble keeping, so I always felt good about

myself and the work. Over time as I settled in and got more excited, I added hours. Service

work isn’t an obligation, and shouldn’t feel like one. It should All you up with a sense of

accomplishment, joy and gratitude for your own good fortune.

In 2013, after just more than a decade of volunteering, I was fortunate to be able to become

a full-time volunteer providing quality health care and education for those in great need in

Guatemala. But fulAllment doesn’t depend on making volunteering a career. Every day, each

of us have the opportunity to do small things with great love for family, friends, and with a

little effort, for strangers. If you And joy in walking a dog at a nearby shelter, volunteering

at a thrift store, staffing a help project in a far-dung corner of the world as I do, or in some

other form of loving service, the results will be life-changing for those you serve, and for

you.

If you’re already volunteering, you know the beneAts. Pass the idea on! If you've yet to

volunteer, believe the studies, stories like mine, and Socrates: a happier, more fulAlling life

awaits—so get started! If not now, when?
