Acquisitions Information

The Adolphus Wesley Carpenter Photograph Collection was donated by the daughter of

Adolphus Wesley Carpenter on April 22nd

, 2014 and accessioned by the State Archives on

August 1, 2014. The bulk of the photographs were originally contained in a number of small

three ring binders. No written information to aid in identification was found in any of the

binders. Upon processing, the photographs were removed and the binders were discarded.

Processing Information

Processed by Ian F.G. Dunn. 2014

Biographical and Historical Note

Adolphus Wesley Carpenter (1909-1997) was an American amateur photographer in

Durham, North Carolina. Carpenter graduated from Duke University’s business school in 1931.

He and his family often took trips to various places across North Carolina and the southeast.

Many of the photographs in the collection document the people and activities on these trips.

Carpenter was a career executive with Ligget & Myers Tobacco Company in Durham,

NC. He devoted much of his spare time to nurturing his love for photography, including the

processing and printing of photographs in a darkroom located in the basement of his home in

Durham, North Carolina. Largely inspired by his older brother, Jesse T. Carpenter, the two

brothers learned from each other and shared many trips devoted to photography. Jesse was

responsible for encouraging Carpenter to enter his photographs into photography contests

sponsored by local newspapers, of which he won several awards.

Collection Overview

This collection contains five hundred and fifty three (553), gelatin silver photographs.

The photographs in the collection range in size from 2.5”x3.5” to 10.5”x13”. The bulk of the

collection consists of double sided photographs measuring 5.25”x6.75”. These double sided

photographs consist of two traditional gelatin silver prints that have been glued together. Most of

the double sided photographs have three holes punched for installation in a binder. It is believed

the reasoning for gluing two photographs together was to create a thicker document along with a

more book-like feel. The photographs, taken and printed by Mr. Carpenter, depict families,

events, objects, and scenes one would typically see in 1940’s American life. Places include Nags

Head, North Carolina; Durham, North Carolina; Pocahontas, West Virginia and various

unidentified locations across North Carolina and the southeast. Events and activities seen in the

photographs include the Chesterfield Christmas Parade, various fishing trips, portraits of family,

friends and the surrounding community; and artistic landscapes. Also included in the collection

is a selection of photographs depicting African American life. These include portraits of

community members, especially children, and the various activities and work the residents

engaged in on a daily basis.

Collection Arrangement

The Wesley Carpenter Collection is loosely arranged by subject matter. Separation of the

double-sided photographs was not possible; therefore, many of the photographs in particular

groupings may belong to other groups. Be that as it may, it is important to note that certain

subjects were prioritized to unique groups regardless of what subject matter appeared on the

reverse. For example, pages (pairs of photographs) depicting the Chesterfield Christmas Parade

or African-Americans were placed in those respective groups regardless of what appeared on the

reverse. It can be said that all pages that contain photographs depicting African-Americans or the

Chesterfield Christmas Parade appear successively while photographs in other groups, such as

portraits or landscapes could appear in any group if the subject matter on the reverse was thought

to be a higher priority in terms of organizing the subject matter.
