1. What is ecology? What does eco mean? What does ology mean?

2. From simplest to most complex, what are the levels of the ecological hierarchy?

3. What is the difference between a community and an ecosystem?

Predation

Ms. KlinkhachornOctober 4, 2010

Biology

Predation

• Predator vs. Prey– The predator is doing the hunting– The prey is being hunted

• Survival of the fittest – Adaptations perfected through evolution over time– Example: hiding/fleeing behaviors, heat-sensing

organs, poison

Example: Hawk and Rodent

Example: Lion and Hyena

Coloration

• Cryptic Coloration aka camouflage– Colors blend into the environment

• Aposematic Coloration– Apo = away, sematic = sign or meaning– Bright colors serve as a warning sign for predators

Mimicry

• Batesian Mimicry– A harmless, palatable species mimics a dangerous,

unpalatable species

• Mullerian Mimicry– Two dangerous, unpalatable species mimic each

other• Safety in numbers

Batesian Mimicry

Mullerian Mimicry

Mimicry doesn’t have to be in appearance only – can mimic

behaviors, movements, and sounds

Video Clips

• For the following 2 videos I want you to write on your paper how these animals represent the concept of mimicry. Tell me what advantages these animals get from mimicing others.
