Fencing Practice
The Barony of An Dubhaigeainn 7
"Potted" Arms & Fancy “Faire” IX
Saturday, June 27, 2015 Hosted by the Canton of Hawkes Reache - Huntington, New
York
Spring flowers into summer. Their Excellencies, Baron David Vázquez de Valençia and Baroness
Mistress Suzanne Neüber de Londres, set out across the lands of An Dubhaigeainn to collect tithes
on their way to the Pennsic War.
The Canton of Hawkes Reache welcomes them with a Summer Faire, replete with two fencing Tournaments, including a Pas D'Arms Tournament to select the new Baronial fencing champion.
There will be Thrown Weapons practice & Heavy Weapons pickups and many other games and activities for all. Archery is no longer viable due to changes at the site. Merchants are most welcome to help the populace get into fine shopping form for Pennsic. The Canton invites you to bring your chairs, blankets and shade to take respite upon the lawns, participate in the wide variety of activities, and visit with old and new friends.
There will be a hearty day-board served throughout the event. No feast will be served, yet fear not! None shall leave hungry, as the table has groaned under the bounty of our day-board these past seven years!
The Tournaments:
Fencing
Our current Baronial fencing Champion, Lord Eanraig the Bonesetter (Jim Best), will surely design
interesting tournaments as always.
Inspections and authorizations for the Tournaments will begin at 11 AM. At noon, just prior to the
start of the Hat Tournament, the Canton will once again hold the ever-popular Hat Auction, where
members of the populace can bid for the favor of a fencer as symbolized by the fencer’s “hat”. Each
fencer in the Tournament must be introduced by a herald. It is expected that each fencer’s herald
will be vividly "over the top" (as in “A Knight's Tale”). A prize and recognition will be awarded for the
best heraldry. A prize is awarded to the bidder whose fencer wins the Hat Tournament, which shall
immediately follow the auction.
Please contact Lord Eanraig by e-mail at [email protected] or by phone at 631-849-4066 before
9 PM with any questions.

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!
“I know what a herald is, they’re the ones who like to shout ‘Oyez’ really loud.”
Not necessarily! That’s only one type of herald. There’s voice heralds, book heralds, and silent heralds too. The voice heralds are broken down into Court heralds, those are the ones who shout at you, and Field heralds. They’re the ones who announce which fighters are taking the field and instruct them on which order to salute people. The book heralds are the ones who can help you research and figure out a name and device for yourself. Some specialize in names, and others in armory. I’ll bet most people haven’t even heard of a silent herald. Sign language interpreter! And you don’t have to be hard of hearing to be able to appreciate them. Are you a fighter who has attended outdoor court, but there’s so much else going on around you that you can’t hear who’s getting their award before the battle? Or maybe you’ve been at an event where the acoustics of the room are absolutely horrible and you can’t tell what the tin hats up on stage are saying. If you can learn a few signs, you can watch the silent herald and know what’s going on!
If you would like to try your hand, or voice, at any of these, I would be delighted to help you begin.
=====
Thanks, Purple

Unto the populace of An Dubhaigeainn, do your
Baron and Baroness send greetings!
We have had a very busy few weeks; at the beginning of April we
welcomed Their Majesties Omega and Etheldreda at their Coronation; and
last weekend we hosted Their Majesties’ Crown Tournament to select their
Heirs. Vivant to the victors, Their Highnesses Brennan and Caoilfhionn.
We would like to thank all the members of the Barony who stepped up to
the plate and helped make this past Crown Tournament so successful. We
really showed the Kingdom and its populace what a truly blessed Barony
we are. Although it is tempting to single people out for their good works at
Crown, the simple fact is that we are grateful to each and every one of you
for all that you have done, and without listing nearly the entire Barony by
name, we are sure to leave people out. You have all done us proud, and we thank you for your efforts.
We would also like to congratulate the newly minted Lord Eanraig the Bonesetter, who was inducted into the
Order of the Silver Rapier; and to Sterling of House Three Skulls who was brought into the order of the Tygers
Cub.
June will bring two more events to the Barony: From June 5th-7th, we will Find Hungry Samurai, and on June
27th, Potted Arms will see the selection of our new Baronial Fencing Champion. In between, on June 13th, we
will visit Iron Bog for K&Q Rattan Champions, where Their Majesties will choose new Champions as well as
invest our new cousins to represent them in their Barony.
The summer will of course continue with the rapid ramp-up to Pennsic, and shortly afterward, Arrows, Axes,
and Ales, to be held August 29th, will see the selection of our new Archery and Thrown Weapons Champions.
As a reminder, the July meeting marks the expiration of the current terms for our Baronial Exchequer and
Minister of Arts and Sciences. If you are interested, letters of intent are due at the June meeting, where
Offices are renewed or new Officers chosen.
The Coronet is continuing to look for individuals who want to learn how to be retainers. The job is not hard,
and can be entertaining. It’s a great way for a new member of the barony to better understand how the
Barony and the SCA works. All interested parties should contact the Baroness.
We look forward to seeing the members of the populace to take advantage of the many opportunities to
participate and enjoy the activities in the Barony.
David and Suzanne
From the Coronet
