Hello NAMI members and friends of NAMI!!! I do hope that all is well with you. We are rockin' and rollin' at the NAMI office getting ready for 3 months of incredible events! I do hope that you will all come join us for some or all of these events! Before I dive into that, however, I want to thank each and every one of you who remembered us on North Texas Giving Day. We had the biggest day ever this year so--a big THANK YOU for every one of you who participated by donating. We promise to use every penny you donate wisely to help people who are living with mental illness and/or their family members. So what did you think about our last NAMI Dallas Meeting? We had a speaker come talk about the Enhanced Program for Early Psychosis that Metrocare is currently offering. This is a cutting edge evidence based program and we are SO fortunate to have that available right here in the Dallas area. We know now that EARLY intervention in psychotic disorders is tantamount to prevention. By intervening early we can literally change the trajectory of the illness and prevent so many problems in the future for the individual and the family. Help us spread the word. It IS available in Dallas. If you were there last month then you know what I'm talking about. We seek to bring you the latest and best information at NAMI! In October we are once again bringing you a VERY SPECIAL speaker. John Petrila is a national expert on HIPAA! Have you ever encountered a problem that seemed insurmountable because of HIPAA? Many of our members consider HIPAA to be a huge barrier and problem. Come learn from an expert what HIPAA really does say and what is doesn't say. What and who does it cover? John Petrila is Vice President of Adult Policy of the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute and was a member of the founding Board Institute as well. He is an attorney with 40 years of experience in mental health law and policy. We are very fortunate that he has agreed to come spend time with us at our next NAMI Dallas meeting to educate us all about this very important law. (By the way, he's also a very good speaker and has a terrific sense of humor). NAMI is also hosting the Annual CIT Appreciation Dinner on the evening of October 17th at Lover's Lane United Methodist Church. This is always a fun time! If you've been before, you know exactly what I'm talking about! You can sponsor the dinner OR purchase individual tickets if you would like to attend. Come join us for the fun! It’s an event NEVER disappoints. November brings more fun and wonderful learning. We will have Dr. Joel Holiner, esteemed psychiatrist and Executive Medical Director of Medical City Green Oaks, who will come talk with us about Depression. Dr. Holiner has been an expert guest addressing psychiatric disorders in both the local and national media so we feel very lucky to be able to have him as a speaker at NAMI Dallas. In November we will also be hosting a conference on Wellness in the Field for mental health professionals, first responders such as

law enforcement and paramedics, and others seeking to help individuals in crisis. This will be held at the Center for Brain Health and promises to be a terrific conference. Continuing education credit is available for law enforcement (TCOLE) and for social workers, LPC's, LCDC's, and psychologists. Then, before you know it-- the holiday party will be here! Sooooooo, you'll want to be there or be square! I look forward to seeing each and every one of you very soon. Best Regards, Sherry Cusumano President of NAMI Dallas

Because of your advocacy, the Senate pulled the Graham-Cassidy health reform bill off the table. You
fought back—and won—against a bill that would have hurt millions of Americans with mental illness.
Thank you.
NAMI Expresses Relief That Mental Health Coverage & Protections Remain Intact
Sep 26 2017
Today, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) expressed relief that the Graham-Cassidy-Heller-Johnson health reform bill was pulled from an expected vote this week.
The Graham-Cassidy-Heller-Johnson bill would have resulted in millions losing coverage and the Medicaid program, an indispensable lifeline for people with serious mental illness, would have experienced devastating cuts over the next ten years. With half of all Americans with mental illness going without treatment, we need to improve our nation’s mental health system, not dismantle it.
In recent years, Congress made important strides in improving our mental health system, including enacting mental health and substance use parity. Americans need parity protections to continue—not be taken back to a time when:
People were denied insurance coverage or charged more because they had a mental health condition. People were dropped from their insurance plan or turned down for renewal because they had used mental
health services. People had yearly or lifetime limits on mental health care—or no mental health benefits at all.
“With today’s action, the important protections in the Affordable Care Act remain intact, preserving indispensable gains in fair coverage of mental health conditions. We hope Congress now comes together in a bipartisan manner to improve mental health coverage and services for the more than 60 million children and adults in our country who live with mental illness.” said Angela Kimball, National Director of Advocacy & Public Policy, NAMI.
