SUPPOrT SErVICESFITNESS CENTErThe Fitness Center, located in Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice. In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new, state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athletes’ seasonal fitness needs. ATHLETIC TrAININgThe Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physician Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Nicholas Avallone and Dr. Louis Rizio. The Athletic Training staff includes Head Athletic Trainer Karin Damon, Assistant Trainer Dana Baffuto and Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies.

Damon received her B.S. in Health Science from Slippery Rock University and M.S. in Theory of Sports Medicine from Springfield College in Massachusetts. She was the Head Athletic Trainer at New Jersey City University before accepting the position at Centenary College in 2004. Damon was selected as an Athletic Trainer for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, working at the equestrian and mountain biking venues. Baffuto is a graduate of East Stroudsburg University where she received a Masters of Science degree in both Sports Management and Athletic Training. Davies earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania.

ACAdEMIC SUPPOrTAcademics are Centenary’s number one priority and therefore we offer a number of support services to our student-athletes to make sure they are on the right path to a successful academic career. Each student-athlete is required to attend study hall in their first year at Centenary to aid them in their transition between high school and the demands of college academics. Professors are also encouraged to send progress reports on student-athletes to the athletic staff for academic monitoring. If a student-athlete is struggling in a class, Centenary offers tutors at no cost for any class. This is just another way that Centenary provides unparalleled service to its students.

COACHINg STAFFJohn garriques completed his fifth season as a head coach of the Centenary College wrestling program, where the team has posted a 42-29-1 mark in his five seasons. Under his direction, the program has also sent a wrestler to NCAA National Tournament in four of the past five seasons.

The 2010-11 campaign proved to be Garriques’ best, as the Cyclones received their highest ever national ranking, No. 8 in the country, won the Metropolitan Conference Tournament for the first time inprogram history, sent a program record five wrestlers to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships and saw three achieve All-American status, also a program first.

For his work, Garriques was named Metropolitan Conference Coach of the Year and assistant coach Mike Kessler earned Metropolitan Assistant Coach of the Year honors.

CC finished the year 12-2 overall, including 6-1 in Metropolitan Conference action, setting program records in dual victories and conference dual victories. Both of Centenary’s losses came to ranked opponents in No. 5 Ithaca and No. 12 TCNJ. The team placed second in both the Ithaca Invitational on Nov. 7 and the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 20.

Seven Cyclones won at least 20 matches, led by senior Matt Regan’s 28. Fellow classmates Dave Alsieux (27 wins), Jon Stillo (25), Will Livingston (24) and Charles Cannella (22) also had successful seasons, as did junior Owen Vernon (22) victories) and sophomore JD Zitone (21).

Eight Cyclones placed in the Metropolitan Conference Tournament to give CC won the event for the first time in program history. Livingston, Zitone and junior Tim Lutke won at 133-pounds, heavyweight and 197 to earn a trip to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships. They were joined by freshman Chris Burdge and Alsieux, who placed second at 157 and 141.

Burdge earned Metropolitan Conference Co-Rookie of the Year honors and d3wrestle.com Rookie of the Year accolades, and he was not finished. He upset the top-seed at 157 in the NCAA’s and went on to place eighth to become Centenary’s first-ever rookie All-American.

Livingston, who became the program’s first All-American last season when he placed third at 133, battled through injury to earn sixth-place and receive All-American status for the second-straight year, another program-first. Lutke took seventh at 197 as Centenary placed 13th out of 60 teams.

Centenary’s success extended past the mat, as the team posted the 10th-best GPA in the nation to earn a National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Scholar Team Award. Moreover, Alsieux, Regan, Stillo, junior Jose Vega and Vernon each received NWCA Division III Scholar All-American honors, given to those student-athletes with at least a 3.2 GPA. For Stillo, it marked the third consecutive season he has earned the award.

The 2009-10 campaign proved to be historical for the Cyclones, as Livingston became the program’s first-ever All-American, finishing third in the NCAA Wrestling Championships. He also was ranked a contender by d3wrestle.com. Livingston earned a berth to the prestigious event by winning his weight class in the Metropolitan Championships, the first Cyclone to achieve that feat for Garriques and just the second in program history. Thanks to Livingston’s efforts, Centenary finished the season ranked No. 27 in the country.

CC placed fourth in the Metropolitan championships as Regan finished second at 165, Stillo won true second at 149 and Alsieux took fourth at 141. Centenary finished the season 8-9 overall, with six losses coming at the hands of ranked teams, including three top-ten programs. Four Cyclones won at least 20 bouts. Off the mat, Centenary finished with the 17th-best GPA in the nation and Stillo, Alsieux, Mike Hall and Regan all were named Scholar All-Americans.

In 2008-09, CC won 10 dual victories with only six losses. In tournament action, the wrestlers placed on 13 occasions, including one championship and one runner up. Vernon was named second alternate to the NCAA Tournament, as the team finished fourth out of nine in the Metropolitan Championships. Off the mat, the team finished with the 22nd-best GPA in Division III, and Stillo earned Scholar All-American honors with the 23rd-best individual GPA in the nation.

Garriques came to Centenary by way of a very well known wrestling program at Phillipsburg High School, where he had been an assistant for three seasons under legendary coach Rick Thompson. At Phillipsburg, which happens to also be his alma mater, Garriques was directly involved with every aspect of the daily activities within the program. During his stint with the Stateliners, the team won three Skyland Conference Championships, one Group 4 Championship and had three individual state place winners.

Prior to his return to Phillipsburg, Garriques was an assistant for one year at Middlesex County College in Edison, N.J. While at Middlesex he coached five National Qualifiers, one All-American and coached the team to a fourth-place finish in the NJCAA National Tournament.

Garriques wrestled for Phillipsburg High School, where he was a three-time New Jersey State placewinner. He also helped his team to receive recognition of being number one in the state, three years in a row.

COACHINg STAFFIn 1997, his senior season, Garriques was a New Jersey State Finalist, taking second-place at the State Tournament. He was also named a High School All-American that same season, due to his second-place finish at the NHSCA National Tournament.

During his high school years, Phillipsburg won three Group 4 State Championships and three Skyland Conference Championships. Upon graduation, Garriques attended Gloucester County College in Gloucester, N.J. During his freshman year he became a Junior College National Champion, on his way to becoming a two-time Junior College All-American in both 1998 and 2000.

During his career at Gloucester he also helped the team win two National Team Championships. From there he transferred to Seton Hall University in the fall of 2000, and was an NCAA National Qualifier. Garriques then completed his wrestling career the next season at Hofstra University where he also became a National Qualifier, for the second consecutive year.

While at Hofstra, Garriques helped the Pride achieve National Recognition, as they were ranked in the top 20 in the country and won the CAA conference. Garriques was ranked as high as fourth in the country at his weight class during his senior season.

Garriques’ high school and college career record stands at 234-45. Along with his wrestling accolades, Garriques also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies with minors in Psychology and Communications from Seton Hall University in 2004.

Garriques currently resides in Phillipsburg, N.J. with his wife Jacqueline and their son Owen Teague, who was born Nov. 5, 2008 and classified in the 8-pound 12 ounce weight class.

Lenny Carida is the Centenary Wrestling Team’s Strength & Conditioning Coach and has over 30 years of experience as a Strength and Conditioning Coach with a B.S. from Lander University. Carida is sole owner of Scientific Strength Coaches LLC and has a partnership with TEST Sports Clubs. As part of his partnership with TEST Sports Research and

Development team he had the opportunity to be part of their 3 year mentorship program with Athletes’ Performance in Tempe, Arizona.

Mike Kessler is beginning his second season as an assistant wrestling coach at Centenary College. Thanks to his efforts, Centenary won the Metropolitan Conference Tournament in 2010-11 and Kessler was named theMetropolitan Assistant Coach of the Year.

As a collegiate wrestler, Kessler competed at the Division I level for Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J. Kessler was a four-time NCAA qualifier with 99 collegiate victories. He was ranked as high as No. 12 in the nation at 149-pounds during his time at Rider. Kessler was also a Colonial Athletics Association (CAA) Conference Champion his senior year, also at 149. Kessler placed fifth at the University Freestyle Nationals in 2009 to earn freestyle All-American status at 70 kg.

Before Rider, Kessler wrestled at Owings Mills High School in Owings Mills, Md. He was a four-time Maryland State placewinner and was an undefeated State Champion in 2005, going 36-0. In high school, Kessler was also a Maryland Freestyle state champion and a Middle Atlantic Eastern National Champion at 152-pounds. Kessler also served as Class President at OMHS in 2003-04.

Kessler graduated from Rider in the Summer of 2010 with a degree in Communication, and is pursuing a masters degree in the Leadership and Public Administration graduate program at Centenary College.

The Centenary College wrestling team is once again coming off a tremendous year. After posting up Centenary’s first All-American in school history in the 2009-2010 season, the Cyclones were able to triple that mark last season, naming three All-Americans: will Livingston, Chris Burdge, and Tim Lutke. Thanks to their efforts, along with National Qualifiers dave Alsieux and J.d. Zitone, the team was able to finish the 2010-2011 season ranked eighth in the country. This season, the team looks to return two All-Americans and one of their round-of-twelve NCAA National Qualifiers.

The Cyclones continued their hard work off the mat as well last season as they were named a Scholar All-Academic Team after posting the tenth best team G.P.A. in the nation. Included in the honors were Jose Vega, dave Alsieux, Jon Stillo, Owen Vernon, and Matt regan who received individual Academic All-American accolades for their efforts off the mats.

This season, Centenary Head Coach John garriques and his assistant coach Mike Kessler look to bring in 14 new wrestlers, many of which are expected to contribute right away. The new class of athletes includes a variety of N.J. state qualifiers, along with a select few that have broken the 100 wins margin over their career.

When asked about this year’s new team, Garriques responded “We lost five great seniors last year, and most believe that this will be a re-building year for us, but I don’t believe in rebuilding. We have two returning All-Americans and one National Qualifier, along with a very strong freshman and transfer recruiting class. It is good to have depth, and our future starters from last season who sat behind nationally ranked individuals will have the opportunity to step up and fill their shoes this season.”

At the 125 lb. class, the Cyclones have two stars to step in. Senior Jose Vega, who received a fourth place finish in the Metropolitan Conference Tournament last season will sit the first semester due to injury, but looks to come back strong the second half of the year. Joining Vega will be freshman Alex reeves, a two-time N.J. District Champion who is noted by Garriques as a hard working individual looking to step up for the Cyclones this year.

The 133 lb. class shows hope for fresh young talent as a freshman looks to take to the mat for the opportunity to make an impact for the Cyclones. The young athlete for the Cyclones is Adam Swift, a N.J. State Qualifier hungry for another chance at victory.

The Cyclones have a variety of athletes at 141 lbs. this season. Junior Craig Montgomery, a transfer from Rider University who sat behind former Cyclone and National Qualifier Alsiuex for the last two years, and senior Nick Priest, also found a spot behind former Cyclone and two-time All-American in Will Livingston, look to step up this season and serve as leaders for the Cyclones. Joining the two veterans is freshman Joe Bartolini, a two-time N.J. State Qualifier looking for his opportunity.

At 149 lbs. the Cyclones turn to a transfers in sophomore don Miller of Rider University. Miller looks to bring an outside experience that look to step up this year for Centenary.

The 157 lb. class shows a strong pool of talent in sophomore Chris Burdge, a N.J. State place winner and 2011 NCAA All-American, senior James Valcius, and freshman Phil Esposito. With two top athletes at 157 lbs, the Cyclones should have a strong advantage throughout the year.

Holding off the 165 lb. division is junior Nick Bach, a two-time N.J. State place winner who looks to fill in this season after sitting behind former Cyclone Matt Regan last year.

The 174 lb. class holds five athletes battling for a spot on this year’s roster. Leading the class is senior Mike Montgomery who looks to fill in during the first semester before graduation this winter. Taking over for him will be a class of young athletes in freshman Khalid Shakir,

sophomore dallas Overko, junior transfer from Lock Haven University Kevin dufresne (sitting out due to a transfer year in residency), and freshman Shone Nyemah.

At 184 lbs, the Cyclones turn to senior Tim Lutke who was a transfer from Edinboro College and named a 2011 Metropolitan Conference Champion and NCAA All-American last season.

Rounding out the Cyclones are four heavyweights holding off the 285 lb. division. Leading the Cyclones will be juniors J.d. Zitone, a N.Y. State Finalist, 2011 Metropolitan Conference Champion, and round of 12 participant, and Mike Hall, a 2010 NWCA Nationally ranked athlete. Behind the two juniors will be sophomore Brian grise and freshman Adam daniels looking to gain some experience on the mat behind their NCAA qualifier teammates.

2012 NwCA/CLIFF KEEN NATIONAL dUALS This season, the Cyclones have been invited to the 2012 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals scheduled for January 7-8, 2012 in the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield, Ill. Only the elite 16 teams from Division II, Division III, NAIA, NJCAA, and Women are selected to compete in the event.

The No. 19th Ranked Centenary College Wrestling Team will be joined by Augsburg, Concordia (Minn), Dubuque, Elmhurst, Ithaca, Johnson and Wales, Mount Union, North Central, Olivet, Rhode Island, St. John’s, UW- Lacrosse, UW – Stevens Point, UW- Whitewater, and Wartburg at the DIII level.

The Cyclones look to raise $16,000 to allow for 20 wrestlers and two coaches to attend this year’s great tournament and are looking towards the community for

their help raising the funds to allow for this tremendous opportunity to happen. For years the Centenary College Wrestling Team has helped out the community from shoveling residential sidewalks and driveways to hosting youth wrestling clinics, and strives to put the community first. Now the

Cyclones hope the community will respond back to their efforts and provide them with this unforgettable once in a lifetime opportunity to participate in the duals.

ZEITLEr wrESTLINg FACILITyThe Zeitler Wrestling Facility was completed in January of 2010. The 5,000 square foot addition to the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center will help take Centenary’s wrestling program to new levels.

The new facility contains a wrestling room and office space, and makes the Reeves Student Recreation Center, which was renovated and expanded in 2007, an even more attractive facility for prospective student-athletes.

Funding for this facility was made possible by a gift to The Campaign for Centenary College from a donor who

wishes to remain anonymous.

The new wrestling room also includes a wrestling mat that encompasses 3,928 square feet, a cardio room with stationary bikes, treadmills, climbing ropes that reach 15 feet in height, pull-up bars and a wrestlers’ storage area.

There is a 55-inch flat screen television is mounted on the wall and the room has a surround-sound stereo system.
