CHEPTER 1 : INTRODUCTION TO INDUSTRY

    MANUFACTURING SECTOR

Manufacturing is the production of merchandise for use or sale using labour

and machines, t!s, chemical and biological processing, or formulation. The term

may refer to a range of human activity, from handicra"t to hi#h tech, but is most

commonly applied to ind$stria! production, in which ra% materia!s are transformed

into "inished #ds on a large scale. Such nished goods may be used for

manufacturing other, more complex products, such as aircra"t, h$seh!d

a&&!iances or a$tm'i!es, or sold to %h!esa!ers, who in turn sell them to retai!ers,

who then sell them to end $sers and cns$mers.

Manufacturing takes turns under all types of ecnmic s(stems. n a free market

economy, manufacturing is usually directed toward the mass

    &rd$ctin of &rd$cts for sale to cns$mers at a prot. n a c!!ecti)ist ecnm(,

manufacturing is more fre!uently directed by the state to supply a centrally &!anned

ecnm(. n mixed market economies, manufacturing occurs under some degree of

    government re#$!atin.

Modern manufacturing includes all intermediate processes re!uired for the

production and integration of a product"s components. Some industries, such

as semicnd$ctr and stee! manufacturers use the term fabrication instead.

The manufacturing sector is closely connected with en#ineerin# and ind$stria! desi#n.
