    Competitive Forces

*here are si/ competiti%e forces) isk of Hntry, i%alry, Bargaining ;ower of Buyers+Bargaining ;ower of uppliers+ u$stitute ;roducts+ and 2omplementors"

    • *he isk of Hntry in the *oy #ndustry is actually fairly low, with new mem$ers of the

industry with a solid idea or license a$le to gain new consumers fairly easy" *he author  pre%iously felt that fanfollowing of franchises or $rand loyalty was a $igger factor than itactually was" Additionally, $ecause switching cost is a nonissue in regards to nonelectronic toys, it allows new entrants to get a $etter foothold into the market"

    • i%alry in the *oy #ndustry, concerning the pre%ious point is a large factor" ot only is it

easy for competitors to threaten pre%iously esta$lished toy companies, $ut it is !ust aseasy for them to $e acGuired $y competitors as well"

    • *he Bargaining ;ower of Buyers is a large force in the *oy #ndustry as well, $ecause)

*oys are not an essential product, so if the economy tanks parents and the like are not

going to $e rushing out to $uy toys+ *he %olatility of customer preferences in the industryforces companies to adapt to new fads, which makes them need to constantly inno%ate products instead of $uilding on the same thing o%er and o%er again"

    • *he Bargaining ;ower of uppliers, in contrast, is not as $ig a deal" *here are many

different suppliers for toy companies to choose from, and it does not matter to them whoare the one who supplies material for their toys, which forces the suppliers to $end to thetoy company6s demands"

    • *he threat of u$stitute ;roducts is a %ery $ig deal on the *oy #ndustry, as toys

companies not only against each other, $ut against %ideo games, electronic de%ices,

tele%ision, and computers"• 2omplementors, also called accessories, in the *oy #ndustry are a common practice+ most

due to dangerous components and chemical compositions of toys" Because of this, toy companiesha%e $egun to undergo increased scrutiny from go%ernment organi1ations, and there ha%e $eenan increase in laws to make sure that toy companies make their products up to certain safetystandards" (5tu!y on the) -'

*he 2ounterfeiting of products is another trend that is a concern for toy companies, although not recent, it is growing rapidly" ;re%iously, counterfeit toys were relati%elyunsophisticated and of a uni%ersally low Guality" 2urrently, they are still unsophisticated and of alow Guality, $ut there are now so many fakes running around it causes issues in) An increasedchance for $uyers to mistake counterfeits for the real deal+ As the creators of the fakes donIt carea$out the Guality, they are likely to not ha%e the most recent safety standards in the forefront of the design process, meaning that when and if a kid is harmed playing with it will cause moreimage pro$lems for the industry as a whole+ and, the companies themsel%es ha%e to waste moneyon cracking down against fakes that they could spend on product design or running facilities"(5tu!y on the) -'

&ore than the other two, the $iggest negati%e trend in the toy industry in%ol%es the

increase of nontraditional toys that are competing against traditional toy companies" ince thereare an increasing num$er of alternati%es for kids to turn to when it comes to entertainment, it cutsinto the market $ase for toy companies to appeal to" (,as#ro Annual Report'

#n regards to where the dominant product of technology is on the curse, it is still inthe increasing returns segment" 2urrently, there has not yet $een a paradigm shift leading tothe creation of a product technology that can compete with the factory system, as much asinno%ators ha%e $een looking to create such a thing" 'owe%er, la$orintensi%e factories, meaning those done $y hand, are $eing phased out $y automated factories+ from a certain point of %iew, one could say that automated factories are the paradigm shift competing withla$orintensi%e factories"

Unlike many other industries, technological standards are not important to the *oy#ndustry" *he main type of type of toy produced in the *oy #ndustry, the 3traditional toy5, is notdesigned to work with the toys of another company and the toy parts of one company are notgenerally compati$le with toys of another company" ;ut another way, you can6t fi/ your $roken&attel toy with 'as$ro parts" (rom another perspecti%e, it is of little conseGuence if a child playswith two different toys from different companies or not+ unlike how a &acintosh specific program only works on a &A2, a child can play with a &attel and 'as$ro toy together !ust fine"

'owe%er, this is really only true in regards to 3traditional toys5+ nontraditional toys, suchas %ideo games, ha%e $egun to encroach on the markets of traditional ones, and technicalstandards are %ery important to such toys" *o put it simply, there are three specific standards with
