WELCOME MESSAGE

Dear Colleagues and Friends!

We are very happy to welcome you to Genoa for the 47th EDTNA/ERCA Conference. Last time the Conference was held in Italy was in 2007 and it took place in Florence. Now, 11 years later we are back in Italy, this time in the lovely cultural city of Genoa. Time is passing fast, and it doesn’t feel that our last Conference in Krakow was a year ago. We are ready, and we are here in Genoa to give you an unforgettable Conference.

Many new items have been implemented this year and there is one which I particularly would like to highlight – our Conference Application. The application provides evidence that we are moving forward with our environmental strategy. We are, as an Association, in the forefront of Online Communication and it has been a focus for some years and will continue to be one of our focuses for the coming years. Take the opportunity to download. It works both for iPhones and Androids.

Now to the Conference and the purpose of being here and participating. We should never forget that face to face meetings gives us so much more than just to be in a Video call. It has an important role of educating, exchanging information and experience, utilizing the expertise of all of us i.e. health care professionals, service leaders, academics, researchers, care givers, people with renal disease and industry partners. Delegates from around the world come together to share experience, innovations and knowledge and to experience the latest technology and innovation in the treatment of Chronic Kidney Disease. The Scientific Programme is well prepared and there will be several Workshops, Educational Sessions and Poster sessions.

Together, let’s make this Conference into another EDTNA/ERCA success. Welcome to the 47th EDTNA/ERCA International Conference in Genoa!

With very best regards,

Edita NoruisieneEDTNA/ERCA President

ABOUT EDTNA/ERCA

The European Dialysis and Transplant Nurses Association/European Renal Care Association (EDTNA/ERCA) was established in 1971 to address the special needs of nurses, physicians, social workers, dieticians, technicians, transplant coordinators and unit managers that care for patients with chronic kidney disease and those requiring renal replacement therapy. Today, 47 years later we still are working with the same goal as from the very beginning – the focus is on our Patients.

Some glimpses on our history:1971 Foundation of EDTNA/ERCA by a British Nurse, Deirdre Oag from London.

EDTNA/ERCA applied for and was granted a charitable status in the UK.

1972 First Conference of EDTNA in Florence, in conjunction with the 8th Congress of EDTA/ERA (European Dialysis and Transplant Association/European Renal Association). Approximately 150 nurses attended. The aims of the Association were agreed.

1973 EDTNA/ERCA had 300 paid members, nurses were full members, other paramedical colleagues from the renal field were offered an associated status.

1974 Inauguration of a Newsletter, Abstract selection for the Conference, Conference Proceedings, first Monographs and Scientific Journal.

1975 Simultaneous translation at the Conference in German and French. ORPADT, a Belgium Renal Nursing Association, was founded.

1977 Introduction of the publishing of the Journal and Newsletter in six languages.

1979 First EDTNA/ERCA Learning Institute in the UK and Germany. EDTNA/ERCA had 12 Key Members from 12 countries. EDTNA/ERCA Code of Practice to fight against Hepatitis B.

… as you can see, this is just a small part of our History which we are very proud of.

THE VALUE OF THE CONFERENCE

What are the benefits of participation? The EDTNA/ERCA Conferences are conversations on a large scale. At our Conferences, we have the rare opportunity to talk, face-to-face, with many of our Colleagues & Friends, Guest Speakers, Industry and some of our mentors and teachers whom have attended for many years. As long as we arrive with a burning question, every conversation we have brings us closer to the answers we seek. Asking so many of our colleagues outside of a conference would take ages, and we’d miss the interplay of asking a group of people at the same time and hearing lively debates to our questions.

To join the EDTNA/ERCA Community is about meeting new people and building new friendships or professional relationships at the Sessions, at the refreshments, at the Exhibition and “in the hallways”. It’s where we connect and reconnect with colleagues and friends and a chance to have those rare conversations.

THE VALUE OF A CONFERENCE IS WHAT WE PUT INTO IT, AND WHAT WE DO WITH IT!

CONFERENCE VENUE – PORTO ANTICO DI GENOVA – CENTRO CONGRESSI

Genoa’s Conference Center located inside Porto Antico’s historical Cotton Warehouses is a guarantee of an exceptional experience. A highly valued venue, Porto Antico Di Geneva will be able to meet all the conference, convention, exhibit and entertainment requirements perfectly.

One of the features and the most appreciated appreciated about Genoa’s Conference Center is its multi-story structure that allows gathered arrangements of space. In two neighbouring modules, the Auditorium and a variety of meeting rooms with their adjacent open spaces can be easily fitted for exhibitions and receptions.

The Auditorium with a capacity of 1480 can be divided into 2 separate mirror-like meeting rooms, is incomparable thanks to its theatrical structure and central stage. Thirteen different sized rooms, 8500 sq. m of space to fit varied arrangements; outdoor space along the Molo Vecchio quay. What is more, the facility is close to the airport, train stations, highways, and hotels. Last but not least, at a short walking distance are the Rolli Palaces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A location justly ranked amongst Italy’s chief conference destinations.

Affordable parking is available in the Porto Antico Area and adjacent to the Conference Center.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME

The structure of our Scientific Programme for the EDTNA/ERCA International Conference is changed. It was decided to reduce the number of Guest Speakers (GS) in order to give more time and space to our fellow colleagues who come to present.

There are two different Parallel Oral Sessions:1. Sessions with GS’s will have the following structure: GS + two oral presentations + three short oral presentations.2. Sessions without GS’s will have the following structure: four oral presentations + three short oral presentations.

The aim is to invite and involve leading renal nursing staff as GS’s.

The title “Poster presentation on stage” was changed back to “Short Orals” as suggested by a number of delegates during the Conference in Krakow. Short Orals are without poster presentation this year.

Session timings:GS = 30 min including questionsOral Session = 15 min including questionsShort Oral Session = 10 min including questions

Scientific presentations on the websiteAs usual, the scientific oral and poster presentations will be available for EDTNA/ERCA members after the Conference on the EDTNA/ERCA website www.edtna-erca.com/membership. The Guest speakers, main authors or presenters will be asked to give consent to the Conference Department in writing or by email by latest September 21.

THE EXHIBITION

For us, within our Association, it is about achieving the best standard of education and research for all renal care professionals caring and supporting for their patients and families around the world. To be able to live by this Mission and the Purpose and Reason for being a true renal professional, many people and partners are involved. Many tasks to split and shared amongst us, to become stronger and achieve our goals.

Industry Partner’s support, involvement and advice is graciously appreciated and the success of our Educational Projects and Programmes would not be possible without their tremendous assistance and support as it is an exclusive learning and networking opportunity for our Association.

What is the benefit of the ExhibitionAs long as we arrive with a burning question, every conversation we have brings us closer to the answers we seek. Asking so many of our colleagues outside of a conference would be immensely time consuming, and we’d miss the interplay of asking a group of people at the same time and hearing lively debates to our questions.

To join the EDTNA/ERCA Community is about meeting new people and building new friendships or professional relationships. It’s where we connect and reconnect with colleagues and friends and a chance to have those rare conversations.

Don’t forget to participate in the Quiz related to the Exhibition and win one year of EDTNA/ERCA Membership. You will find the Quiz in the Conference Application. The Winner will be announced at the Closing Ceremony!

WELCOME TO VISIT AN EXCITING EXHIBITION AND EXPLORE THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS WITHIN RENAL CARE!

GOOD TO KNOW ABOUT THE GENOA

Location and History Genoa is located in the Milan-Turin-Genoa industrial triangle of Northwest Italy. It is the capital of the Italian region of Liguria and the sixth largest city in Italy. Genoa is one the country’s major economic centres. Genoa has historically been one of the most important ports on the Mediterranean: it is currently the busiest in Italy and in the Mediterranean Sea and twelfth-busiest in the European Union. Part of the old town of Genoa was inscribed on the World Heritage List (UNESCO) in 2006.

The city’s rich cultural history in art, music and cuisine allowed it to become the 2004 European Capital of Culture. It is the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, Niccolò Paganini, Giuseppe Mazzini, Renzo Piano and many others.

ClimateGenoa has a borderline humid subtropical and Mediterranean climate. In the warmest months – July and August – the average temperature is 27.5 °C during the day and 21 °C at night. Visitors coming in September can expect temperatures around 22 °C.

Time ZoneCentral European Time (CET) is 1 hour ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). This time zone is in use during standard time in: Europe, Africa and Antarctica.

Transportation The main railway stations are Genoa Brignole and Genoa Piazza Principe, the first situated in the east side of the city centre, close to the business districts and the exhibition centre, while the second is in the west side, close to the port, the university and the historical centre. From these two stations depart the main trains connecting Genoa to France, Turin, Milan and Rome.

The bus network is operated by AMT and services the whole city until 1AM at night. Be sure to check routes and timetables you need because the system can be somewhat confusing, e.g. some routes only travel at certain times and are replaced by other similar ones with different numbers at those times. There is also an underground line connecting the main square, piazza De Ferrari, with the northwestern neighborhood of Rivarolo, serving the historical center, the Porto Antico touristic area, the Stazione Principe main train station and the ferry terminal at Dinegro along the route.

As is common in Italy, tickets are not sold on board (except at night or on Sundays, then at an increased price); you need to buy your ticket before boarding the bus at a newspaper kiosk or a tobacconist’s or an underground station, and validate it at a punching machine once you have boarded the bus.
