For my FMP I always planned to keep the theme of football as an area I would focus on, but the final outcome I’ve planned to do was not my first idea for this major project.

My first approach was to display information gathered from website, matches, fans or just local people off the street. Forming a verity of in-formation graphics, seeing what fans liked or not like communicating the key details of a weekend of football. When I day of football was on I would design a graphic showing:

How many goals, cards, offside, corners and fouls were given? Plus showing where they were playing, who’s playing and who scored the goals. Taking ideas from my last project I did for my independent prac-tice and developing them to match a target audience of football fanat-ics’ and sport lovers. I then hope for a final product of a book displaying a couple of months worth of football results key points and plus quotes taking from fans on how they felt viewing that match or from commen-tators. With this book I hope to make results and football for a non-fan more interesting to look at instead of just seeing a bunch of names and numbers.

After having my feedback meeting with Mike and Sallyanne we came to arrangement of forming football and video together. Making it personal and showing it from the fans point of view.

1st Idea Proposal

FMP Proposal

Page 9: final hand in

I wanted to continue the study I had with the football information graphics about football and the facts of a game. Displaying them in fun to look inter-esting pieces in the format of a poster. Taking the theme of football and using film as a medium I chose to progress with making a short piece, focusing on the world and football from a fans point of view. Looking into the personal view of a fan and asking question on present and past events.

Using different methods of research ranging from documentaries to surveys I would like to explore the world of football. Portray a side of the game that most people out of the sport don’t see and presenting it as a mini documen-tary on the beautiful. My inspiration for doing this was from a past project where I followed my brother who is a massive football fan. Plus doing a set of graphics in my last term opened up to an idea that would enjoy with a pas-sion, both areas that I have a massive interests and love for.

Exploring blogs and surveys to construct a form of questions that give me a personal view from each interviews perspective. The interviews will be ar-ranged with people that have a passion for the game, this also will be my target audience plus people who don’t really like football. This will be small window peeking into a popular culture, that some people choose to make it their religion.

Another side to this project is for me to learn more about filming and editing. Right now the planned software to use is final cut pro, basic editing software I know how to use. Knowing only the basics but a chance to develop my skill and to learn thing or two when filming. For me this is another a chance to add a new technique/tool to my CV. A starting point for this project is for me to get into brainstorm the contents and how I will form my questions. Also I will straight away get in touch with football clubs to see what the rules are about filming, plus seeing if I can get the opportunity to film inside. The end result will be 10-15 minute piece showing interviews with a range of football fans. Getting their take on the chosen questions, with that mixed in with clips from the different ground I will visit. I hope to make this a personal view on the beautiful game, with quotes and intimate stories on their season or something they do as fan on match day. Its not just few men kicking a ball around but a way of life, hopefully that is the direction I will like to take with my FMP.

Page 10: final hand in

Here is a written and digital version my timetable, a planned out sched-ule showing a day to day plan for my FMP. Beginning with January were I will do mock proposal and research of what I want to do for a final thing. The remaining months will be researching certain areas and de-veloping the idea and start filming right away.Building and organizing a range of footage and start editing in April and wrapping things up with putting it all together in a portfolio for hand in.

Time Table

Page 12: final hand in

Inspiration for this project came from a past brief I did, when I was fol-lowing football and trying to understand how fans feel about the sport. I began with my younger brother who follows Arsenal and is a football nut, documenting him and asking a few questions on how he viewed the sport and his club. I really enjoyed this self-directed project and hope to push forward with it, after talking to other fans and hearing how they weren’t happy with their team’s performance. Taking information and designing a range of information graphics, making a small graphic ad-vertisement to show the anger and feelings of the fans to the club.

The whole point of the brief was to sound the emotions of the fans. Showing a side that you rarely see in the media because of the limita-tions on what can be said and shown in the papers.

The end of last term I began to do information graphics on football match facts. Showing how many goals scored, fouls, red cards, yellow cards, corners and offside were counted in that match. Each day would be calculated and organized in to categories for me to communicate in a unique and interesting way. After talking to my tutors and discussing what I could do for my final major project, they thought of combining the two areas of football and film together. Making a piece of following fans or looking at the personal view of a fans world and how they feel their football season is going.

Past Projects

“My father’s been going 25 years, I was born and raised in Camden, and I went to my first game at age 3”

Page 13: final hand in

Page 15: final hand in

To begin my investigation I started to look at themes, subjects and con-cepts I could push further. Trying to plan a structure of what the focus point would be noting down anything that had a connection with the project. Trying to emphasis the target audience and what I want to show in my video.

Another point of research was brainstorming what I could film in relation to a video on football: the fans view. How many grounds are in London? Local streets? Match day tickets/program? These were some of the questions that sprung to mind when beginning my research.

Plus focusing my time on what questions to ask and trying to structure a path so it would make less complicated when editing. Asking friends, housemates, family or other students rough questions that would then help me developed a set of questions when interviewing people.

Research

Page 18: final hand in
Page 19: final hand in

To start my research I looked at different short films or documentary about football. Trying to gather as much of a view on how film maker/ di-rectors captured footage and pieced it together. Plus understanding dif-ferent methods of filming with a camera from the visual aspect by using different angels and ways as possible. For me I have never done any-thing like this so the research was more of learning platform for me to gain a sense of knowledge that would help when filming lives. Looking at BBC produce documentaries on FIFA and the corruption to films on football gangs and violence. Learning about how a lot of football clubs are in debt because of owners and players wages.

Watching the videos helped me with what I would need to film because besides doing the interviews, I would need to get pick up shots of foot-ball related clips to go in between the interviews. Besides learning about filming techniques I picked up on a lot of information about football the positives and negatives about football helping me to form certain ques-tions when interviewing.

YouTube- Video Research

“When I was 9 a friend had an Arsenal jersey. I liked it and I started to follow Arsenal”

Page 20: final hand in

Taking the ideas of the FMP brainstorm I began to research books and film that had a relation/connection to football. Allowing me to build up a foundation of research on other projects that had similarities to my own, helping me work towards my goals. Main goal of this research was to help me with what questions I should ask?

With the books I looked at range of books talking about football from different aspects from a player to writer just commenting on the game. “The Glory game by Hunter Davies was a book that takes you in to the world of the players dressing room, show a side of the football that most people could only dream off, one chapter showed a detailed view of how the players were in the 60s and how they interacted with the fans. An-other book would have been Nick Hornby’s “Fever Pitch” another great book that understands the excitement and passion of football, enjoyed reading it and help come up with useful facts when summing up ques-tions for my interviews.

The films I looked at were to note down the techniques and styles of filming. Trying to getting an understanding of how to editing my own, plus appreciative what the story and message behind the script.

When brainstorming ideas to research for questions, joining up to blogs and chat rooms was an idea that I thought to myself I could push further. Asking fans personally and not having the problem of limiting yourself to what you can say.

This was a fast way of gather information and using that to form a group of questions, signing up to my local club first and then reaching out to most of the top blogs that had the most hits. I found this style of research very useful because it aloud me to get a decent quantity of feedback in a short amount of time. Plus helping me with my questions and wanting to keep pushing the development of this style of research.

Forum Roomsand Blogs

“First team I ever followed and support as a kid because of the way they played football”

Page 24: final hand in
Page 25: final hand in

On the previous page I spoke about pushing the development the style of research of the blog and I attempted to by creating a survey on sur-vey monkey. It’s a website that allows you to write up a digital survey and send it out by email or taking the link and posting it over the web. I used it to make my own football survey-asking question and thought off by using the feedback from the blogs and posted over the pages I have signed up to. Once a survey has been completed the data would be au-tomatically sent to my account so I could analysis it.

I felt that I wasn’t getting enough information from posting on the blogs so I pushed the survey onto social networking websites, advertising it to friends or followers first. Then pushing it further on to group pages on Facebook that had an interest in football. This raised the number of responses I got and gave me a lot of information on how fans felt and what they would change. In my favor this helped me on what questions I should ask when filming my interviews.

Test Interviews

Page 29: final hand in

After listening to what participate has to say I made up a rough draft of questions for my first set of interviews. These interviews were a stepping stool for me to get a grip on how I want to set up the frame or ask the questions. I approached them as tests because I knew the first out-comes wouldn’t be prefect, either the sounds of the framing wasn’t right or maybe the some of the questions weren’t suitable.

Arranging the interviews with people who had an interest in football that went to my university, so local people to make it easy setting up a date and using the campus my backdrop, I filmed two of them both support-ing different clubs and have their own opinion of the subject. I wanted to get a sense of personality giving the interview a character and making it more real, then just them reading off a script.

Looking back over the footage I found some interest stuff that made each interview their own plus making edit some of the questions to get more a response. They both became the foundations/ roots of how I approached my interviews, giving me a sense of directions and under-standing when filming.

On this page in a small information graphics that shows the plan out of the grounds and where they are located on the map. Showing the grounds allocation, stadiums name, nick name and the nearest tube sta-tion, plus images of what it looks like and small description of when and what I film there.

Arsenal, Fulham, Chelsea, Wimbledon, Barnet, Charlton, Crystal Palace, Tottenham, West Ham, Barnet, Leyton Orient, QPR and Dagenham and Redbridge are some of the well know football clubs in London. Record-ing as much of the stadium and its surrounding, here are few pictures of the grounds.

Planning(Grounds of London)

Page 38: final hand in
Page 39: final hand in
Page 40: final hand in
Page 41: final hand in

Besides filming the interviews I want to collect a range of dif-ferent footage focusing on the grounds of London. I will travel around with my camera gathering as much of the ground that I have access to, using them to fill in the gaps in between the interviews. I believe by doing this it will give depth and a more interesting appeal to the audience when being watched.

My plan is to start of with local grounds that I know like Arse-nal, Chelsea and Fulham filming the outside of the grounds and if allowed a chance to film inside too. After that I will move on to the different football stadiums of London doing the same as the first 3 to build up a folder of clips, this would be great and help me out a lot when it comes to editing. A rough exam-ple of what I would film at Fulham would be:

-front gates-3x side shots of the front entrance-cottage gates-park view of the football ground-next game sign-stature -close up of stature -football club badge -Putney end-road shot (floor)-looking at the ground from across the road-the ground lights-road signs-ticket entrance -blur of the ground-look in of the ground

Here are a set of rough story board ideas for what I want to film on a match day or a general trip around the ground. Each frame having its own identity, with a view point that it owns picking up a verity of interactions/surroundings. I wanted to view it either from my own point or the fans point, how you would see on a match day, the excitement, atmosphere and the buzz of a day out at the football. I want to get as much on film and show all the sides of football.

Following this plan out plus adding new shots to the list when actually being at the stadium and seeing what works when filming.

The Idea of a Storyboard

Page 48: final hand in

When planning out this project I wanted to try and attempt mixing up the interview with other bits of footage. As the theme being football I had to go film about the grounds and areas of that football club. On the pervious page you can see that I researched London football clubs and planned my filming around days that I would go and film. This was pe-riod I would capture a club a day and add it to a pile of footage I’ve got from other clubs; this process had to be done so that when it came to editing I wouldn’t run into any prob-lems. The only errors I ran into with some of the film were the quality, so I got back out there and reshot.

Having the chance to go around London and filming all of the different stadiums were an enjoyable time for me. Mainly I being a fan and getting a chance to film and see all these stadiums was incredible, living London for most of my life I would of not really put the effort into seeing other clubs but my own, plus I didn’t really know how close most the grounds were from me.

In a season for my own I club I would only go 2 or 3 times to watch them play live, either because of prices or on the date of play. However with this project it has pushed to go watch them play more plus go see other leagues play so personally this was a bonus for me.

Filming- Stadiums

Page 49: final hand in

Filming- Stadiums

Page 50: final hand in
Page 51: final hand in

In the stadium section I spoke about mixing up the interviews with other bits of footages, one being on the football grounds and the other being fillers. These fillers are random they have no personal contents to them and are basically used for filling the empty gaps and use when necessary. Unlike the stadiums they were not planned out, they have just been collect by me when I visited London to view a ground. The fillers range from a blur caption of streetwalkers to an oyster barrier at waterloo station.

Filming- Fillers

Page 52: final hand in

To start the interview phase I began my emailing anyone who I knew that had an interest with football and has something to say. In my email I mention the basics of what I want to ask and will they be all right with me filming them. After getting confirmation I had to planned them into a busy schedule of filming in London, I had to juggle the time I had and make use of it with luck most of the candidates were fine with it.

A normal interview for me would be running through what I was goanna to ask them before filming; this got them comfortable and less nervous when answering me. I wanted a relax environment so that they felt all right to speak and be them self, making the interviews more genuine and truthful. The plan was to get as much footage so that when editing I would have enough to play with and not have a great deal of trouble.

Each interview was different from the environment and scene to how each person answered the questions. Indicating a good sign when watching back I found it not boring and giving me an insight on how the sport is viewed from the eyes of 14 people.

When it came from the stage of editing I planned to use final cut pro, but the options were changed when I got home to download the software. I choose Final Cut Pro X, a program that combines the layout and func-tions of IMovie plus a mixture Pro features that make the editing a tiny bit more tranquil to operate. Learning this new style of Final Cut was at first motivating me to adapt and learn a new software. Understanding the new functions and how to cut and edited the footage, plus using new options for editing audio and getting rid of a hum or sound electrical equipment leaves and the new visual editing features are wonderful. Allowing me to edited the color, adding effects and stabilizing.

Editing-New Software

Page 60: final hand in

The idea for the editing and production of the video was to combine the interviews with the fillers I have. Crossing over from question to question to each interview in random order. The plan was to have 5-6 main interviews and then using the remaining interviews as a support for them, during the interviews some were good and some were not as good but in each one I found at least one good answer. Plus the fillers are used to fill up the gaps in-between each question giving space so that when watching you won’t get muddle up with the order of things.

Something else that I was in two minds about was putting text in be-tween the interviews, describing what question they are being asked. I thought by doing this it would help the viewer understanding what they are being questioned, instead of just assuming.

Info-Graphic: My Journey

Page 64: final hand in

I’ve always had an interest with information graphics and thought I would take the chance to create a small design to go with my project, summing up on what I filmed. Looking at the locations of the football clubs in London and high-lighting them by the color nearest to the home kit. Listing common information for first time visits like what’s the nearest tube or train station to the ground. Classing out of five I calculated how many times I went to the club the highest being arsenal a 5, an average visit would have been Chelsea or Fulham being 3 and the lowest being 1 like Dagenham Red bridge.

Taking the information from the filming I did small illustrated representing that class of filming. Showing three different classes of interviews, stadiums and clips ranging of fillers. The whole point of this piece is to take all the informa-tion and display it in an interesting way, plus using something that excites me and pushes me to design differently.

As an addition to the video I want put together a small booklet that describes what the piece is about and my journey through out this project. Inside you will see how I organized my time planning for the filming and what questions were asked in the interviews. The small booklet will have a mixture of information graphics and pic-tures from the many stadiums I visited over the time of this project.

For this part of the project the book will be digital and converter by using ISSUU and linked to the video. Making it available to anyone who watches the video on-line. Doing this mini book was a bonus cause it aloud add on the 1st mock brief I had into my final brief.

Evaluation

Looking back over the course of this work I believe that I successfully have achieved on what planned out to do. Edit a short piece forcing on the fans thought and opinions of the sport. Gaining a displaying a personal insight of what it truly means to be a supporter. Plus learning a thing or two when it comes to filming and editing.

Looking over my FMP I can say that my skill with editing had gently improved by learning new software. Looking and comparing the two (final cut pro) and (final cut pro X) there is not a massive difference but adapting to it has im-proved. Learning new transitions and short cuts when it came to editing so with future work I can use it to make my job easy then it was when doing my FMP. When it came to filming I took what I found in my research and applied to my own style, plus added my own touch. I found that being in the monu-ment you have to work with what you got, so I had to learn when I filming live.

Overall I have enjoyed working on this project because it allowed me to combined two passions of mine, one being Football and the other Graphics. Doing something that I like made the work load much more enjoyable, allow-ing me to visit all the ground in London and going to a range of different Eng-lish league games. Interviewing the different fans was a pleasure to get the insight of how they felt about the sport and what they would change. Having something that enjoyed for a project encouraged me to work a lot and do the best I could. Each stage I found myself getting use to what I wanted to film both fillers and interviews, with the question evolving each interview passing by. Seeing a something that I could progress with after my FMP is over, making it my own independent practice that could last even after university.
