narrative, conventions, style & iconography and institutions.

    Title: Heart Of the left

I choose Heart Of the left as the title to my film as I felt this connoted to the

audience the passion the main character has ,in the film, for politics and standing

up for what he believes in.I felt that this was a good title as it connotes to the audience that the film will be

about politics. This is similar to how some Film 4 films use the title of their film to

connote to the audience something about the film, such as, The Full Monty.

The title of my film will appeal to my target audience as the target audience will

mostly be left wing, because working class people usually support left wing

    political parties.

Target audienceThe target audience for my film is:

    - 16-24 year old British males

    - Interested in politics, succeeding in life (wealth, health, family, generally getting through lifewithout to much struggle)

    - Of a white ethnicity

    - Working class

The film will appeal to this audience type as the film is based around a young, white, maleliving in a working class society and trying to find ways of making his future better. Thiswould relate to the target audience as they may be in similar situations. For example, thefilm looks at the current student protests, this would be important to the target audienceas it is a real event that will most likely be effecting them now. Also, it will appeal to thisaudience as it has a unique selling point: No other current film is about student protests.

From researching into exit polls on Fish tank, a British Social Realist film whose target

audience is similar to mine, I found that: 38% of its audience went to see the filmbecause the story appealed to them. As Fish Tanks target audience is similar to my own Iwill look at how they connote what their storyline, through the use of a voiceover, is intheir trailers and will try to emulate this in my opening sequence. I will use music thatcontains dialogue about the themes in my film.

    Technology

To create a unique, yet still realistic film, I will use:

    - rewind effect (to show a characters state of mind a technology I have emulated fromother British Social Realism films). I will show this half way through my openingsequence.

    - Webcam (As this may appeal to a modern audience)

    - Mobile phone footage- Green screen (to create a slow/fast motion effect). When shooting the news report.

These technologys will be suitable for my film as they are a realistic and mostly cheap wayof creating different effects and gives the audience a clear idea of who characters are, class and environment.

However, there is some limitations to these technologies. E.g. It may take me a long time tofilm my opening sequence as some equipment I want to use, such as green screen, Ihave never used before, so I will have to learn how to use them before I film, takingtime away from me actually filming. In regards to this, I will make sure my planning timeis tight so I keep to the deadlines I have given myself for filming.

    Representations

Applying Propps character types to the characters in my film, here is the main types:

The protagonist /hero in my film is: Aaron. I will use low angles and close ups regularlyto help the audience feel bad for Aaron and connect with his story.

The antagonist/blocker is: The government/ prime minister. I will use high angles toshow power and make the audience feel intimidated. When the other characters

are talking about the government I will make sure it connotes to the audience thatthey are the antagonist, through the use of swearing and talking badly of.

Father character type: Aarons biological Father. This character will only be in sceneswhere Aaron is in his house. The mise-en-scene of his house will help indicate tothe audience that the scene is going to involve Aarons father.

Helper: Aarons friends, other protesters. As the helpers will only be seen at protests, I

will use non-diegetic sounds that connote to the audience that Aaron is that this iswhere Aaron is and will use these sounds as an introduction for these characters.

The film will try to challenge the stereotypical representation of lazy, uncaringteenagers, as the teenagers in my film will be active in trying to change society.

NarrativeBrief summary of the film: The protagonist in the film is Aaron, a 16 year old from East London

who is from a lower working class background. Aaron has had it with the government andwants to make a change, through student protests against the rise in university tuition fees.

    own hands.

Summary of the opening sequence: (1) Aaron is in a classroom at his school trying to fill out a

UCAS statement, however he does not think that he can afford to go now as a result of therise in university fees. He decides to go on a student protest and arranges to go with his

    friends.

Conventions of an opening sequence: To make sure my opening sequence looks

like a real film, I will follow film traditions by creating my own company logo

that will run before the opening sequence beginning. I will, also, have the title

of the film in the opening sequence, to create an introduction for the film and

assure the audience that they are watching the right film.

I will use an establishing or long shot in my opening sequence to connote to the

audience what the film is going to be about and set around.

Flashbacks will be used in my opening sequence to give the audience a

background story of the main character in the film.

To fit into the British Social Realism genre, I will add true story details and dates ofevents to connote to the audience that the film is going to be real.

Themes: I will conform to the themes usually discussed in British Social Realist films, such as moneyworries and crime, however how I use these conventions will be unique.

Representation of gender: I will subvert from the stereotypical representation of lazy, uncaringyoung males by using an active male character as the lead role in the film. I will connote to theaudience that he takes a leaders role in life through scenes were he is organizing protests andtelling people what to do.

Representation of class: My film will focus on a typical working class society, conforming to many of

the stereotypical views of the working class that are seen in British Social Realism Films, such as,money worries.

Mise-en-scene: As my representation of class is conforming to the British Social Realismrepresentation, the mise-en-scene of my film will also use similar locations, such as ruff estates, tohelp connote the class of the characters.

Music & sound effects: Most of the sound I use in my film will be ambient and diegetic, as this willhelp create realism in the film.

Camera shots & editing: Similar to This is England, I will give a documentary style feel my film. I will

do this by using a unsteady, handheld camera to create the effect that the camera is another personin the film, allowing the audience to feel as if they were that person.

Dialogue: Conforming to the British social realist genre and given a clear understanding of wherethe character come from, I will give my characters strong East London accents and make sure theirslang is the slang used around this area. My film will convert to the dialogue used in many BritishSocial Realism film, because most of the dialogue in my film will not bring the story forward tomuch.

    Conventions

    9/10

    Style & Iconography

I will use a handheld camera, mobile footage and camera work in the style of a news

report to connote to the audience the mental state of different characters and to

help show clear differences in locations.

I will use quick edits to raise intensity and draw the audience in, as this may make

them confused about what is going on, as a result they want to know what

    happens.

I will use props, including: Protest posters, school uniform and police uniform. This

props will be used as visual signifies for the audience, enabling them to know

straight away where the scene is set.

I will use non-diegetic sound of thumbing or a heart beat as this will help create atense atmosphere for the audience and will relate well to high action scenes.

    Institution

As the brief states that the production company is Film 4, I will take into account thetype of film they usually produce and will make sure my film meets this criteria.

Alongside many other British Social Realism films, for example Trainspotting and FourLions, I would say that, as a result of the controversial themes discussed, such asrebelling against the government, the film will not be distributed in some

countries. I think that the film would probably only be distributed to Englishspeaking countries and even then, as a result of regional dialect used in the film, the film may only be distributed in a few countries. Also, slang is hard to translateand other countries may not understand how different words are used to meandifferent things.

My film would be exhibited in/on:

    - Independent cinemas/Art houses

    - YouTube

    - ITunes

    - Lovefilm.com

    - DVD
