    Dec.2arealACTtestforeleventhgraderstookplacetohelpdeterminewhichtest,theACTor

    theSATwasamoreuserfriendlytest.PrincetonReviewconductedthistrialballoonandsent

    scoreresultstostudentswithaguidefortestinterpretation.

    Dec.4th

    OurSeniorCareerBreakfasttookplace. Fourteenprofessionalsinavarietyofcareers

    offered their advice about job requirements and educational preparation. Many shared

    personalstoriesaboutmeaningfulmomentson thejob.Studentswereable toaskquestions

    beforerotatingtoothercareertables.

    Dec.6th

    Tenthgradeclasseswereintroducedtothecollegeadmissionsprocessinaninformal

    classroom setting. Ms. Solomon spoke about CUNY requirements, investing in summer

    programs to grow interestor talents, the importanceofwriting compellingessays. Students

    viewed theBaruch collegeessays tobecome familiarwith the topics.Special thanks toMrs.

    Mullerforinspiringtheseworkshops!

    Dec.17th

    ScoresBackWorkshoptookplaceforeleventhgraders.Thiswasanopportunityfor

    parentsandstudentstolearnhowtointerpretthemostrecentPSATscores,tohearfromthe

    AdmissionsDepartmentofBrooklynCollegeabouttheimpactofSAT/ACTscoresonthecollege

    admission process. Students and parents learned about test preparation optionswithin the

    community.

    Dec.18th

    MDYHSwillhostaCAJUE(CounselorAdvocacyfortheJewishUniversityExperience)

    meeting.This isaprofessionalorganizationof collegeguidance counselors in theNewYork,

    LongIslandandNewJerseyarea.

    Dec.20th

    VisittoYeshivaUniversity/SternCollegeforWomen.OnDec.28th

    seniorslistenedto

    Mr.MichaelStrauss,theAssociateDeanoftheSymsSchoolofBusinessofYeshivaUniversity

    andMrs. GeriMansdorf, the Associate Director of Undergraduate Admissions of YU Stern

    School forWomen. Studentswere inspired to take a tour of these schools and get better

    acquainted.

    CUNY admissions representatives have encouraged this becausemore favorable outcomes

    resultfromearliersubmissions.

    For the last fewmonths,ourCollegeBulletinhas focusedondifferentaspectsof thecollege

    application.Thiseditionwillfocusonsecuringthestrongestlettersofrecommendationyoucan

    get. Letsfirstaddressthequestionofwhotoask.Thisteacher,mentororcoordinatormustbe

    someone

    who:

    Knowsyouwell Knowsyourwork Candescribeyoupositively familiarwithyourcareeroreducationalgoals Canfavorablycompareyouwithyourpeers

    Courses that requireyou todoaprojector termpapercanalso spotlighthowyou integrate

    information.

    Choosing a teacher in the field youmaywant topursuemakes the lettermore relevant.By

    example,ifyou

    are

    thinking

    of

    acareer

    in

    medicine,

    seeking

    aletter

    from

    your

    science

    teacher

    wouldbeagoodchoice.

    Asking for a letter of recommendation is a very personal requestwhich should be done in

    person.Thiswillenableyoutogaugewhetheryourrecommenderisenthusiasticaboutwriting

    youaletter.Youshouldalwaysaskwhethertheyfeelcomfortableinwritingyouastrongletter

    ofrecommendation. Ifyousenseanyhesitation,or iftheyare inanywayambiguous intheir

    reply,thankthem,andprepareyourselfinfindanalternative.

    Recommendersalwaysappreciatewhenyouareconsiderateoftheirtime.Youshouldalways

    giveyourrecommendersampletime(2weeks)towritethe letter.Ask earlysothatyouget

    thebest

    possible

    letter.

    Toassistyourrecommenderandimprovethestrengthanddetailoftheletter,givethemsome

    previouslygradedpapers,astatementwhyyoufoundtheirclassexceptionalandwhatwasso

    meaningfulabouttheirclass.

    Requestaletterseveralweeksinadvance.Thiswillgivetheteacherthetimetowriteathoroughletter.

    Provide in writing, the reasons why you selected this teacher or class as mostmeaningfultoyou.Telltheteacherwhatunitsofstudystandoutforyouandwhy.

    Resubmit any graded papers where you excelled and which provide meaningfulcomments.

    Requestlettersfromspecialsummerprograms Expect these letters will not be shared with you. They are meant for collegetransmission

    only.

    Selectteacherswhosesubjectrelatestoyourcareerormajorinterestincollege.DoNot:
