Knights, Horses, and Cavaliers This game is similar to musical chairs in that when the rhythm stops an action must be

performed. The campers walk around the gym and when the leader calls out “horse”, or “knight”, or “Cavalier”. The campers have to find a partner and do the action called out. The last pair to do the action are “out” and now become the judge with the leader to watch for the last pair.

A horse action is when one child goes down on all fours, like a horse, and the other partner will straddle their back. A knight action is when one partner sits on the other partners knee. If cavalier is called, one partner holds the other partners leg in the air, with their arms over each others shoulders (you can also just say a side hug or arm over each others shoulders).

4 Square Dodgeball Divide the gym into 4 squares using the gym lines. Divide the campers into four teams

and give each team a different colour pinnie to wear. Place balls along all four dividing lines to start. Children have to start in their own corners. Same rules as dodgeball (hit below the waist, catching the ball makes the person out, a dropped ball means you are out). You are only allowed to throw the ball horizontal and vertical (no diagonal). When you get hit, you go and join the team that hit you. Once it gets down to one person left on

a team, whom ever hits that person gets to take over their territory. The game ends when everyone is on one team.

Mario Kart: The campers sit at one end of the gym and are given the names of characters from the

Mario Kart racing world: Toad, Yoshi, DK, Mario and Luigi. When their names are called, they jump up from their spot and race to the other side of the gym. The camper that makes it there first is declared the winner of that “heat”. However, there are several obstacles that make this race difficult, based on the objects that can be thrown in Mario Kart. If the leader yells LIGHTNING BOLT, the racers are made “tiny” and they must run crouching down. If the leader yells RED SHELL, the racers must spin around in a circle five times before commencing the race. If the leader yells BONUS LEVEL, the racers must run backwards. If the leader yells BANANA PEEL, the campers must hop on one foot, and if the leader yells OFF ROAD, the campers must run in slow motion. More than one character can be called at once, and the game can continue until one character has won several races.

Snake Pit: Select one player to be the snake. Place one hoop in the middle of the playing area to be

the snake hole and four hoops spread throughout the rest of the playing area to be rat holes. Assign each player a “home” in one of the rat nests. There should be an equal number of players assigned to each hoop. The snake sits in its hole located in the middle and closes her eyes. The other players leave their homes dance around the snake hole while music plays/ a song is sung. When the music stops, the snake will open her eyes and chase the rats, attempting to tag them before they reach their specific nests. If tagged, the rat joins the snake, and the game continues until all rats are caught.

Zombie Speedball: Zombies have limited mobility; some can only kick and some can only use their hands.

Campers will be paired up, and one will be the designated “kicker” and the other will be the “hands only” person. The pair will be tied together either at the feet OR at elbow, and the pair must choose which method they would prefer and what would be the most effective for their team.

Boston Players are seated around in a circle and are numbered (2 players have each number).

One player is without a number and site in the middle. The person in the middle is deemed IT. Whoever is it shouts out 1, 2, or 3, numbers and the players who are designated those numbers have to get up and switch spots while the person who is it try’s to steal the spot. If the person is successful in stealing the spot then they get the person who is left outs spot. If the person who is it calls Indy 500 then the entire group gets up and switches spots, who ever is left without a spot becomes it and whoever was it gets their number.

Flying Dutch Man All campers are sitting in a circle joining hands but two. The two out of the circle are

holding hands and as they run around the circle and then they will tag two campers who are sitting beside each other and they will run around the circle in the opposite direction in attempt to get to the open spot before the other group. The group left out becomes IT and must repeat.

Twister Tag

Children will form groups with their twister identity. For example all campers with a red spot will be on one team. When the leader calls out a color that group is “it”. They are trying to tag the other groups. If a camper gets tagged they are frozen. They can only be unfrozen if their own group color member unfreezes them by touching their spot. At any point the leader can switch the “it” group by calling out another group color, at that point that group is “it” but the frozen people are still frozen until touched by their group, even the members who are suppose to be “it”. Modifications:

Campers can have to slow walk, or crawl. Smaller boundaries, inside or outside. Additionally leaders can hold up a coloured circle for a visual. Children can also alternate to pick the color who is it.

Twister Bowl (like fruit salad) The campers sit in a circle. One person is picked to be in the middle. He/she calls out one

of the twister colors and all those campers who are that color have to get up and switch spots, while the person who is in the middle tries to get one of their spots. The person after the switching who does not have a seat is in the middle. At anytime the person who is in the middle can call twister and everyone must get up and switch their seats.

Modifications: Campers can have to use other forms of movement, e.g. on their bottom, or crawling.

There can be a rotation of alternating people in the middle to give everyone a chance. Touch that

Tell the kids something to run to and touch -- like something blue, a tree, someone's elbow. Keep the touchables coming fast and see who can keep up.

Take It Back Play game in a large space. Put several sock balls in the middle of the space. Divide

group into 2 groups and on the word "go", they run to the middle and throw the socks onto the other side. The object of the game is get the socks ALL on the other team's side. It is impossible to do, but very funny to watch!

Dragon Race Form two equal lines with players in a single file line. Each player reaches his left hand

through their legs and grabs the right hand of the person behind them. This forms the Dragon Chain. The object of the game is to have each Dragon run around a given point or person and back to a place without breaking. Any time a team breaks, the kids have to run back and start over

Passive

Builders and Talkers Age: Seniors (10+) Group Size: 8+ Materials: toothpicks and marshmallows/ tape and newspaper (any materials you can use

to build a structure)

Space: Small space indoors or outdoors How to play: The group is split up into two teams. Within those two teams, half the

campers must be designated as the “talkers” and half must be designated as the “builders”. The task is to build a certain structure (e.g. a cake, the tallest building, the most sturdy structure), but the “talkers” are the only ones who can give instructions and the “builders” are the only ones that can touch the materials. This is a cooperative game that involved teamwork.

What’s In the Bag Age: Any Group Size: 8+ Materials: Campers’ own backpacks Space: Small indoor or outdoor space How to play: the leader has a list of things that are usually found in a camper’s

backpack. When the item is announced, campers must race to their bags to find the item. First camper to bring back the item wins a point. This game can also be played in teams or during squads.

Coffeepot One player leaves the room while the others think of some activity, such as dancing,

swimming, cooking, reading, sleeping, etc. The activity they choose is called “coffeepot”. When the absent player is called back he tries to guess what coffee potting is by asking each player a question such as, “Do you coffeepot in the dark?” or “Can rabbits coffeepot?” until he guesses what coffeepot means. All questions must be answered truthfully with “yes” or “no”. When the questioner thinks he has guessed what coffeepot is, he may ask if his guess is correct, and if it is, the player who answered his last question goes out of the room an a new activity is chosen as coffeepot. However, if the questioner guesses wrong three times he is out of the game.

Slap Lay in a circle on the ground and have your hands in front of you creating the circle.

Smack your hand on the ground to start the “slap” and continue around the circle. To reverse the pattern in the opposite direction you double smack. A variation would also be to overlap your hands to make it more difficult.

Body Twister Leader will call out two body parts and each camper must go and find a person and touch

that body part. If they get really good the leader can either play with outs or specify colours that need to find each other.

Modifications: Leaders can model with another leader or LIT. There can be outs or no outs. Campers can

also take turns picking the body parts to help get them into the rules of the game. Twister

Children will play the real game of twister. They will find out first hand just how fun the game is. (if the group is large two twister games will go on at one time).

Modifications: Campers can take turn spinning the arrow or we can play with no outs or a point system.

Campers can also be asked to do other things for additional stimulation, like touch their nose. The game can also be played with the children having to touch the floor with their bottom.

A What? Equipment: 2 objects

The leader of the game starts by passing the first object to the person on their right (Person A)and saying, "This is a whit." Person A replies, "A What?" The leader would then clarify, "A whit." Person A then turns to the person on their right (Person B) and says, "This is a whit."Person B, "A what?"Person A, turns to Leader, and asks, "This is a What?"Leader to Person A, "A whit!"Person A to Person B, "A whit!"Person B then turns to Person C, and the game continues...This game can be confused by adding an additional object called a Watt in the opposite direction. Eventually, people are receiving and passing two words at time...

Count 10 Ask the group to stand in a circle.

Someone starts counting from 1 and say's one or two numbers. Then moving in a clockwise direction the next person says one or two numbers counting up from where the last person left off. A person is eliminated when they have to say "10." The game continues again from "1" starting with the person to the eliminated person’s left.eg. "1", "2,3" "4,5" "6,7" "8" "9" "10" then the person who said 10 is eliminated.

Chicken: Sitting in a circle, a ‘mother hen’ is removed from the group while a number of chicks are

chosen. Upon returning, the mother hen “cackles” with her eyes closed and only the chicks respond with “peep peep”. The mother then has to guess who her chicks are with a limited number of guesses (depending on how many chicks there are). A new mother hen is chosen for each round.

Silent Ball: Campers stand in a circle, tossing around a ball. They must pass the ball to someone

across the circle to them, but they cannot speak or make any other movement to attract the attention of the person they wish to throw the ball to. Campers must make eye contact before throwing the ball. If you drop the ball or speak, you are out and must sit down. The more balls you add, the more fun the game is! You can have campers stand back up at predetermined times (eg. When the red ball drops, everyone who got out on the red ball can stand back up except for the person who dropped it)

Avoid the Zombies!: Campers must walk cautiously from one end of the playing area to the other, while trying

to avoid zombies who are wandering about in the middle. If touched by the zombies in the middle, campers lose the use of the area of their body (arms go behind back, hopping about on one leg is fine). If a camper loses both legs, they sit down. However, campers that have been Zombified can be revived by eating braaains. There will be one person in charge of handing out braaains, and if they touch a zombie who has lost the use of their appendages, their strength will be revived and they get back up and shamble about. Campers moving faster than a walk will be penalized the use of one leg, as running will attract the attention of nearby zombies.

Craft

Paper Plate Duck Paint a bendable paper plate orange on both sides then fold in half. Fold another paper

plate in half and cut 1-2 inches off the outer edge. Glue the small plate at the top of the orange plate. Add eyes on the white small paper plate and glue feathers on the top of the ducks head.

Stained Glass Picture Create a picture on a piece of construction paper and cut out parts of the picture. Glue

tissue paper on the back of the construction paper to create your stained glass look. Bird Pencil Toppers

Age: Intermediates/ Seniors Group Size: Any Materials: Styrofoam balls, pencils, tissue paper squares, glue, popsicle sticks, paper

plates, pipe cleaners, googley eyes, feathers, construction paper Space: small indoor space Directions: Campers must put the Styrofoam balls on Popsicle sticks or pencils. Next,

the campers covered the bird heads in tissue paper using the “stained glass” technique (glue+tissue+glue). They can then glue on feathers and googley eyes. They can also pierce pipe cleaners into the head of the bird for a beak and feet. They may require quite a bit of assistance with the pipe cleaners.

Superhero Badges Age: Seniors (10+) Group Size: Any Materials: scrap leather (from Creative Zone), glue, popsicle sticks, paper plates, beads,

sequence, string, hole punch, construction paper, markers, scissors Directions: campers use scrap pieces of leather to create their own superhero badges.

Campers will glue cardboard to the leather and decorate on the leather side with different decorations. Holes will be punched in the leather and string can be fed through so that campers can wear the badges around their waists. Safety pins can also be attached to the backs in order to pin to their shirts.

Snake’s Give each child 3-4 toilet paper rolls. Have the children paint all of their TP rolls. Punch

2 holes across from each other on both the top and bottom of the TP roll. Using string attach the TP rolls together to make the snake. Colour on eyes and use construction paper to create a tongue.

Zombie Escape-Route Map Campers will be required to draw and plan a map detailing their escape routes either from

the community centre or their houses. Campers should think about whether or not they want to go to a heavily populated area to find assistance, or if they want to escape to an

isolated area and hide. Campers should write on the back of their map the things they think they would like to take with them and what their escape vehicle should look like.

Egg Carton Bees Needed: Egg Cartons Paint, Construction paper, pipe cleaners, scissors, glue Take a string of three connected egg carton cups. Trim the egg cups so they are even and

lie flat (upside down) Paint the last two egg cups (the body) yellow with black stripes Pain an eye on the front egg cup (the head) While the paint is drying, cut the wings out of white construction paper To make feelers, cut a pipe cleaner in two. Stick each part through the top of the head –

curl the ends of the pipe cleaners Glue on the wings Run around yelling BZZZZZZZZZZZ (this is the most important step)

Pinwheels Have campers cut out squares in construction paper and colour both sides in a unique

design. Make a dot in the exact centre of the square, and cut from the corners approximately

three quarters of the way into the middle of the square (make sure you do not cut all the way to the dot in the middle)

There should now be eight flaps: hole punch every other flap and fold it towards the middle

Make a hole where the dot in the middle of the paper is Bring the holes on the edges towards the hole in the middle of the paper, and fasten them

together using a split pin fastener. Cut a small hole lengthways through the top of a straw, and slide the split pin fastener

through there as well Close the fastener and spin the pinwheel!

Tissue Paper Flowers Craft Cut a few pieces (about 4-6) of tissue paper (crepe paper) about 8 x 10 inches (the exact

size doesn't matter). Put the paper in a pile and fold it like an accordion. Tie the center of the folded paper with a green pipe cleaner (or twist tie). Gently pull each piece of paper towards the top center of the flower, separating each sheet of paper from the others (forming the petals of the flower).

Finger Twister Children will make and play with their own finger twister board game. Materials *pre cut out twister board 18 cm by 12cm Pre cut out arrow and buy butterfly clips *4 color spot stickers markers (in the twister color) Campers will trace a circle at the top of the paper, and divide it and color it into 4

quarters. Then they will stick six stickers of the same color down, and have four rows across with different colors. The middle of the circle must have a hole punched out. Then the arrow is put on the hole with a butterfly clip. Campers can then decorate their own board with markers.

Modifications: The paper can be cut out, or a stencil given for a circle. Crayons can be used instead of

markets and a model can be made as an example to show.

Drama

Zip Zap Zop Age: Seniors (10+) Group Size: 8+ Materials: none Space: Small space indoors or outdoors How to play: Campers sit in a circle. The group is taught the “Zip Zap Zop” sequence.

One person starts and says “Zip” to someone across the circle. The person receiving the “Zip” must say “Zip”, then “Zap” someone else across the circle. Each person must first receive the word by saying it then send the next word in the sequence to another person. Campers must follow the word sequence.

Mother May I Age: Intermediates/ Seniors Group Size: 8+ Materials: none Space: Medium space indoors or outdoors How to play: One camper is designated as Mother May. They stand facing the opposite

direction of the rest of the campers. One at a time, each camper asks if they can take a certain number and type of step to get closer to Mother May. Mother May can either accept their request and campers proceed or reject their request and provide them with an alternative. Similar to Mr. Wolf- when campers get too close to Mother May, she can turn around and try to catch campers before they get back to their side of the gym.

Comic Madness: Campers are given a single frame from a comic book (Batman is my favourite, but any

camp appropriate comics will do) and they must try and recreate the frames with their bodies. This means that some campers will be inanimate objects, some can work together to create larger characters/ objects. The campers then must “animate” the frame, guessing what came before or after the frame they were given and acting out a story.

Greek Chorus: Divide campers into two teams. Each team will choose a person to be the “actor”, and the

rest of the group will make up the chorus. The team will be given a situation and each member of the chorus will take a turn describing an action that the “actor” of each team must act out. For example, one person might say “Bob cooks eggs for breakfast”, and the next camper might say “Bob eats his breakfast” and the actor must act out the actions described by the chorus. The teams will get 3-5 minutes to talk about where they think their story might go and choose their actor, and then they will present their story, telling it one line at a time. EVERY camper must participate.

Zombie regulars!: Campers act out what it would be like if Zombies took over the world by performing

some everyday tasks (eg. going shopping, going to school, playing soccer, etc) as though Zombies were doing them!

Freeze Frame Children use improv to crate different scenes. 1-4 children start the scene about any topic

they would like and improv the scene while the audience watches. Actors should use big body movements. When a member of the audience sees a position that they could create a new scene with they say “FREEZE”, the actors have to freeze in the exact position they are in and the two campers switch places. The new actor then proceeds to create a whole NEW scene totally unrelated to the last scene.

Story Retell More geared for younger groups (Jr’s). Read a story to the children and have them get

into pairs or groups and perform a play of their favourite part of the story, or have them retell the whole story though a skit.

Auto Trip Players sit in a circle and are assigned the names of auto parts. (ie. hood, wheel, door,

etc.) The storyteller tells a story of an auto trip. As the player tells the story, the parts mentioned get up and follow him/her. When the storyteller yells "Blow-out" each player scramblers for a seat. The one left out becomes the next storyteller.

Bop Bop The players start sitting in a circle. The leader stands up and "bops" or dances around the

inside of the circle. The players can help out by making their own music. The leader then taps selected people on the head and says, "start bopping right now." These tapped people will join the leader in the middle. These boppers keep dancing and tapping until they hear, "Bop Bop Over!" The players will then stop dancing and run back to their spots. The last one there is the new leader.

It Could be Worse Set up the group in a circle or in pairs. The starting player says something innocuous, like

"I almost overslept." Next player says something like "It could've been worse. You could've been late." Then the next, or other, says something worse, like, "It could've been even worse than that. You could've been in your underwear." And then the next or other tries to find something worse than that. Or, the next person says "it could be better..." And so it goes.

Nature

Leaf Rubbings Age: Juniors/ Intermediates Group Size: Any

Materials: leaves, paper, pencils, crayons Space: outdoors Directions: Collect leaves that have fallen from trees and plants. Lay the leaves

underneath a piece of paper, then lightly shade the paper over the leaf with a coloured pencil by using broad strokes of the side of the pencil. Put the leaves under the paper and use a different colour pencil and glue it to folded pieces of paper to make a card.

Music in Nature Age: Juniors/ Intermediates Group Size: Any Materials: Natural items (e.g. sticks) Space: Medium space outdoors How to play: Campers look for natural items around that can be used as musical

instruments. From just tapping a tree with a stick to rubbing rocks together, you can make interesting noises. Each camper can make an “instrument” and sing/ play a song that everyone knows.

God’s Eye Have each child find 2 think sticks. Cross the sticks to make an “X”. Using yarn wrap the

yarn around the cross of the stick until you get a think square of that colour. Then change colours of the yarn and continue making new squares. Each colour of yarn should be about 1 inch thick to make the square before you change colours. Finsih when you have only about 1-2 inches of stick left on the end. Use a piece of yarn to make a loop from one side of the stick to the other to create a loop to hang on the wall.

EXPLOSIONS! *Before this activity begins, give the campers a safety reminder about not touching

any materials used, as they can be hazardous* You’ll need different colours of food colouring, baking soda, vinegar and film canisters. The leader will have the campers come up one by one and choose which kind of food colouring they will put into their explosive (the leader can decide different reactions for different colours, eg. Blue might be super cold). The leader will then put a small amount of baking soda, vinegar and food colouring in the film canister, snap the lid shut, and throw the canister (FAR away from the campers), which will result in an awesome “explosion”. Remember, the campers are NOT to touch the materials required, and should be sitting far away from where the canisters will be thrown. *Don’t forget to pick up the canisters once you are done*

Spider Webs! Campers learn how to make orb webs like a spider! Need: White glue, string, construction paper. Campers will dip a string in glue, and start by making one small circle in the middle of

their paper with the string. They will then keep dipping small-ish pieces of string in the glue and making radiating lines from the circle in the middle. After they have done this, they dip longer pieces of string in the glue and make circles around the spokes.

Leave the string to dry. Once it has dried, the spiderweb should peel off of the construction paper. Campers should make a spider out of pom poms and pipe cleaner to sit on their webs.

North by Northeast The leader gathers the group together. Using the compass, they all learn how to determine

which direction is north. Someone from the group is asked to select an object that is

directly north (e.g. a tree, or a doorstep, or a post ).The group then decides on an object that lies directly south, one that lies directly east, and one that lies directly west.Everyone assembles in the centre of the playing area. The leader calls out one of "NORTH", "SOUTH", "EAST" or "WEST", and everyone runs to touch the object that lies in that direction. The last person to touch the object is eliminated.After playing a few rounds of the game, play can stop, and objects for the intercardinal points (Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest) can be added. Every one can begin the game again, as all B points are used. A great game to introduce the skill of orienteering!

Scavenger Hunt With a Twist Good to use as you walk on a nature hike.

Ahead of time, walk the trail and find objects -- specific leaves, a flower, specific rock, moss anything of interest. Bring one of that item back with you and place in a sandwich bag or other container. Before your walk, have each camper pick something to look for on the trail. The group tries to find each object during the walk. Variation: You can bring small objects with you and hide them on the trail ahead of time.

Mini-Special Event

Theme: “Go Green” Forts: the goal is to make the ultimate group fort from newspaper. Campers can roll the

newspaper to create the base structure and drape newspaper for walls. Awards will be given for most creative, structure, stability etc. It is also a “green” activity (i.e. recyclable).

Equipment: lots of recycled newspaper, masking tape Special Requests: none

Theme: Knights of the Slightly Oblong Table Story: The King of CAC is looking for some Knights to join his crew and go about being

chivalrous and brave. These knights must prove that they posses the important skills required to be master jousters.

Activity: Peep Jousting! Required: A microwave with an transparent glass front, a paper plate, large

marshmallows or Peeps, toothpicks and a marker Description: The campers are each given one or two marshmallows or Peeps, and told to

draw on a face and name their “jouster”. They then stick the tooth pick into the marshmallow and place it on a paper plate. Two marshmallows should be placed on the plate, toothpicks (or “lances”) facing each other. The plate is placed in the microwave and turned on for no more than 5 seconds. The marshmallows will deflate and run each other through with their toothpicks. The knight that spears the other marshmallow first is

the champion! Campers should be encouraged to cheer for their favourite knight/ team mate.

Name: Pop the balloon Description: campers will have a balloon tied about 2 feet away from their ankle. The

goal will be to pop the other campers balloon before theirs is popped. The last Camper remaining with an un-popped balloon wins.

Special Request: a place to keep pre-inflated balloons. Team Tent Building

Description: As a group the campers will try to build a tent together. First we will pack our bags and walk to the camp site. Then once we reach the camp site, campers will put up the tent. They will be encouraged to work as a team. Once the tent is up we can all go inside it and play quite circle games. We can then come out and roast marshmallows. This activity will help children learn how to survive in the outdoors.

Modifications: Campers can be in partners, or actually bring their backpack to keep them stimulated. Also singing songs on the way will help keep their attention. Two tents can be brought to allow for smaller groups. Leaders can also assign different tasks to meet each child’s ability.

Zoooooombies (aka Camp of the Dead) Ages: Intermediates or Seniors Story: Oh no! Due to an unfortunate science experiment gone awry, Zombies have risen

and are harassing the campers at CAC! The campers must learn emergency Zombie protection techniques in order to avoid being bitten and becoming a zombie themselves! The scientist leading them can reverse the Zombification, but is missing the final ingredient in the formula! The campers must complete the assigned tasks in order to receive the missing ingredient and save the world!

Race Day Story: Mario Andretti and his team of racecar yaya’s heard about the fastest group of

campers ever assembled over at Mississauga Valleys CAC. They arrived and relieved the regular leaders for the morning so they can see if the rumors are true.

Vancouver Training Camp 2010 Costume: Famous Olympians (i.e. sport/Canada attire) Storyline: Canadian Olympians going to the Vancouver 2010 Olympics are coming to

CAC to run a training camp! This is a really exciting and once in a lifetime opportunity! Campers will do various activities to prove that they are capable of becoming CAC Olympian. (Storyline can be a precursor for CAC Olympics Special Event.)

Olympic Medals and Torches: at the end of the Training day each camper will get to make their own torches and medals to wear proudly for the Closing Ceremonies.

Twister Costume: A twister board on body and a twister hat Mrs.Twister has heard that Twister is no longer popular. She wants to come to CAC

to help the campers experience the fun of twister. Together they will discover that twister is not just a board game but a fun, never ending game. Due to the fun of twister being lost, Mrs. Twister has lost four of her spots and is ill. In order for her to get them back to feel better the campers must show how much they love twister by taking part in a series of twisteriffic activities. Campers will each pick thier twister identity. Each will pick what colour they want to be from the twister board and pick a spot and tape it onto their backs. (this will be used later). After each activity the children will be asked how much they love twister. If they show they love the game, Mrs. Twister will get a spot, at the end of the games Mrs. Twister should feel better because she has all her spots and must return to board game land.
