    Chapter I INTRODUCTION

Sports is the toy department of human life. This is a quote

from an American sports journalist, Howard Cosell. What he wanted to

mean in his statement is that sports can be a source of enjoyment to

human beings because of the different factors such as money, fame,

health, body, hobby, self-esteem and relationships. According to

Maslows hierarchy of needs, the most fundamental and basic four

layers of the pyramid: esteem, love, security, and psychological needs,

can also be met through sports. Way back in the Ancient Greece when

people learned to be purposive, sportive and active beings, sports has

shown not only the changes in the human body but also revealed the

improvements of the society. The rise of the society was the rise of

architecture as well. It is the living evidence that sports has been a

great part of human beings life in the past and still continues in the

    present.

There are sports were people attempt to push the physical

boundaries. These are what you call extreme sports. These extreme

sports tend to take the adrenaline rush and excitement to the next level.

It began as early in the 1950s when people continue to search for

more high-risk sports. It evolved though time to make the new sports

safer but still performed at a greater level of difficulty. Extreme sport

is classified into land, air, and water.

The World Wakeboard Association establish in 1989 was

created by the wake boarders for the advancement and progression of

wakeboarding. Their goal is to make wakeboarding, which is an

example of extreme sport, be known to the world. Russia, Singapore,

Egypt, India, Qatar and Malaysia are few of the wakeboarding spots

where the Wakeboarding World Cup was held. The World Cup series

aim to bring the best water sport athletes to high-populated,

international urban environments to bring more exposure to these

    sports. (Admin)

In the Philippines, composing of 7, 107 islands surrounded by

bodies of waters, it is said to be one of the perfect places where water

sporting events can happen. Wakeboarding started in the country since

the early 90s and has grown in popularity due to its appeal to the

youth. Now, wakeboarding has become the fastest growing water

sports in the world and the Philippines is gaining ground of being a

destination for wakeboarding and developing world-class local talent.

    (TORRE, 2012)

The emergence of wakeboarding in the Philippines was also the

beginning of the cable park systems. Cable parks are a much cheaperalternative to riding simply because one doesnt need to own or rent a

very expensive boat, thus allowing more people to participate. Camsur

Watersports Complex (CWC) is a watersports park designed for

wakeboarding, water skating, and waterskiing. Last October 2006, they

have hosted the first Philippine Cable Wakeboard Nationals. The

    3

extreme watersports then became popular to the country of Philippines.

Many wakeboard parks were built such as the first cable park, Lago de

Oro in Batangas, Deca Wakeboarding Park in Davao, Deca

Wakeboarding Park in Clark, Pampanga, some resorts in Boracay and

Cebu has it too, and the latest is the Republic Wake Park in Nuvali,

Laguna. A Philippine Wake School was also established to further

promote the sport and to produce world class wake boarders and wake

skaters in the Philippines. And the first ever cable park that was built

was in Lago de Oro in Calatagan, Batangas.

1.1 Background and Nature of the ProjectIncorporating sports with the Philippine tourism is what the

group of private individuals from different businesses envisioned

to acquire more business opportunities in the country. In 2008,

theyve seen that surfing is one of the sports that urges in the

country but unfortunately, they find it hard to market. Then the

sport of cable wakeboarding was born on the surface of the

Philippine waters. Many cable parks arouse and they appealed to

the market. These cable parks that are mostly located in the

southern provinces and cities became hot spots during the

summer. The sport became popular as well as the resorts and the

places near to the wake parks benefited with it. One best example

is the province of Naga wherein it was known to be poor and

undeveloped province before. But when the CWC was built, the

    4

    province ranked 10th

place on the chart of the richest provinces in

the Philippines in just a span of one year.

The CWCs concern is that there is the growth of the sport

but there isnt any development in the facilities needed and

required by the CWWC World Rules in Cable Wakeboard &

Wake skate. One facility needed is a training gym that would let

a beginner to try the sport in a safer place and water before it

could proceed to the real wakeboard obstacle. It also serves as

practice gym to the professional wakeboarders. Wakeboarding is

fun but it could also risk the lives and safety of the wakeboard

riders therefore a medical clinic is a must to give first aid

solutions in every wakeboard park. In terms of the design, the

existing cable wake parks in the country lacks innovations and

modern technologies that lessens the essence of competitiveness

of our country over the other countries.

1.2 Statement of the ProblemEven though the promotion of the water sports was

accomplished in the country, there are still some deficiencies to

fulfill for them to be able to attain their goals. They still lack in

facilities and equipments which could help the athletes and

watersports riders to improve their performances. And if they

wanted that Philippines to host more international competitions,

    5

then their design and facilities should also be an international

design, and could accommodate lots of people. It is not only the

athletes that should be internationally competitive but also the

physical infrastructure as well. It is well seen in our history that

architecture played a large role in defining the sports, the people

and the place. It would also be applicable in the modern times

that the local athletes and the countrys architecture and

infrastructures, together will uplift the name and glory of the

    country.

The Philippines tropical weather allows to spend most of

their time outdoors thats why these kind of sports are perfect in

our country, most especially during every summer. But the

Philippines also experiences rainy seasons from June to

September making resorts, beaches, and any outdoor activities

lose their target market. Rain could cause delays in any sporting

events. In the other countries, they have built a water sports

complex that is roof-covered and has bleachers, with the other

complete amenities needed by the athletes or riders, watersports

enthusiasts, and the visitors or spectators. It is like a stadium but

this one is more likely to have water for extreme water sports like

wakeboarding, water skating, waterskiing, indoor surfing, etc.

The project entails to design a cable wakeboard park with

training facilities and resort that would cater all the water sports

included in the international water sports competition. It will not

only be just a venue if the Philippines would host another year

for the world competition but also will serve as the training

ground and fun water complex for the local athletes and even for

non-athletes. It will have an indoor wakeboard training center so

it can be used during the day or even at night and all throughout

the year. Lighting and acoustics would also play a major role in

putting aesthetic and effects to the water gymnasium. Having an

indoor watersports complex operational anytime of the day and

night and in any weather would also be source of jobs and more

income to the businesses. People who has work in the morning

and has spare time only at night could still have a chance to play

his or her favorite water sport during the night operations.

1.3 Project ObjectivesThe World Wakeboard Association and Philippine Wake

School share same goals and that is to introduce wakeboarding

and other extreme watersports to the world and to support the

talented athletes to join in international competitions which also

could be a key to unite communities and riders from the different

countries. Thus the project aims to:

    a) Provide an indoor watersports complex and training centerspecialized for the different water sports so that anyone

interested in the sport can learn from the basics to the

    professional level.

    b) Provide an innovative design and complete sports facilitiesthat riders can use to develop their skill in different water

sports so that they could be able to represent the country for

national and international cup series and be the ultimate

    wakeboard champions.

    c) Enable the Philippines host more water sporting events andinternational competitions and boost the tourism and

    business opportunities.

    d) Promote the Philippines to be the capital of extremewatersports which will be another reason why it is more fun

    in the Philippines.

1.4 Significance of the ProjectThe purpose of having a cable wakeboard park with indoor

water gymnasium and training center is not just to benefit the

business owners and employers but as well as the wakeboard

riders and enthusiasts. It is not just to promote the countries or

cities tourism industries but as well as to give a comfortable and

safe place which can encourage people to engage themselves to

sports to make them healthier and stronger. Most of the people

playing sports have less chances of getting illnesses for this is a

type of exercise. And aside from its health benefiting factors, it

gives opportunities to people to go in a one place where they can

meet new people or even strengthen their relationships with

others. In all ages, men and women can work in camaraderie

when they get involved to the association. And being part of the

team that competes with the other countries could give them a

chance to bring pride and be the pride of your own country.

This project also incorporates innovative designs and

technologies such as applying Fabric Architecture as roofing

systems, shading, or shelter that also adds to the aesthetic beauty,

elegance and uniqueness of the structures.

1.5 Project Scope and LimitationThe purpose of this study is to provide an ideal Architectural

Design of the Philippines pioneering wake park located at

Calatagan, Batangas that shall be the new ultimate venue for

extreme water sporting events. As such, it shall encompass the

    following:

    1. Julia Czerniak and George Hargreaves, Large Parks, PrincetonArchitectural Press; 1 edition, 2007

The book is consists with eight essays covering about large

urban parks in depth as complex cultural spaces where it also tackles

the key issues of landscape discourse, ecological challenges, social

history, urban relations, and place-making are writ large. They

parks from the past, the present, and up to the future projects. From the

historic parks in New York, the Central Park and Pariss Bois de

Boulogne up to the contemporary projects such as Toronto's

Downsview Park and Staten Island's Fresh Kills, to newly unveiled and

yet-to-be-built projects such as Ken Smith's ambitious plans for the

Orange County Great Park, Large Parks highlights the complexities

and unique considerations that go into designing these massive and

culturally significant works. These cited parks showed the comparisons

between historical or contemporary perspective organized around

criteria such as built versus un-built, urban versus peripheral, or

    competition-sponsored versus commission-based.

    2. Fran J. Donegan and David, Short Pools & Spas: Ideas for Planning,Designing, and Landscaping, Creative Homeowner; First edition, 2003

The book was informative about how to plan and design ones

outdoor landscapes. This book shall be beneficial for the project for it

could add ideas for the beautification of the recreational and amenities

in the site. It also taught everything that has to be known in planning,

directions, and lay outing, and designing, kinds of pools, construction

and materials, up to the maintenance of swimming pools.

The fast growing trend in the world especially in architecture is

Green building. This book covers all things about designing green

structures; from planning strategies to the materials and advanced

technologies. Some of the most famous technologies are the solar

panels, wind turbines, green roofing, water treatment pumps,

permeable pavements, etc. all are discussed in this book. It does not

only give the solutions but it also cited cases and their impacts to the

environment. Certification of the building, how it was certified,

reasons why it was certified were also covered by the authors.

This would be helpful in deciding as to what strategies and

materials are to be used in the project to achieve its goal to be an eco-

friendly structure to the environment. As long as its aim is to conserve

water and energy and does lasts long, it could be considered as a

    product of green innovation.

    4. Christian Schittich, In Detail: Cost-Effective Building (Economicconcepts and constructions), Birkhuser Architecture; 1 edition, 2003

From the title of the book itself, it is about cost-effective

buildings. Despite of the tight budgets on materials and construction,

there are still ways on how a structure can be a beautiful, useful and

strong building. Because cost-effective building requires that special

attention be paid to the overall planning and implementation these

processes are examined comprehensively in specialist contributions

and project documentations, from office organization through the

standardized products to innovative and individual solutions for

    details.

    5. Colin Porteous, The New Eco-Architecture: Alternatives from theModern Movement, Taylor & Francis, 2002

The book is full with photos and illustrations which explain

how to plan and design your structures with more effective alternatives

rather than supporting the modern movement in designs. Each

examples shown in the book was studied and analyzed in relation to

current issues of architectural sustainability. The main point was to still

to design not only for the sake of modernity and aesthetics but also to

adapt green solutions and other disciplines engaged with the built

    natural environment.

Most of the lectures were about considering the sun light and

air directions. Passive cooling is still the key for proper ventilations on

structures and the choice of materials with the new construction

techniques can decide for the long life span of any structure that is to

    be built.

    6. Gregg D. Ander, FAIA, Daylighting Performance and Design secondedition, Wiley; 2 edition, 2003

architectural lighting solution that enhances the design intent of a

project. Case studies are also involved in the book with photos and

explanations for clearer understanding of the techniques that are to be

    used in a project.

Lighting is also essential for it can set the mood in a place.

Good lighted places can also mean safety for the users. It adds

aesthetic to structures and landscapes at night time and more over, it is

highly needed in projects like cable wakeboard parks so that even the

day has ended, this facility can still be used over night.

design structures that would work with a tropical climate and meet the

needs and expectations of the client and building inhabitants. The book

includes both architectural design and material solutions, supported by

theoretical principles, to present a sustainable approach to resort

design. Through illustrations, it was able to show how principles of

sustainable design have been successfully applied in tropical

environments. It does not necessarily require large energy input and

project planned for a beachfront in Costa Rica. Everything was

    designed for minimal environmental impact.

The resort offers different activities but he did not include golf

and tennis for these sports require razing or paving a vast land areas

and large quantities of water and pesticides. The pool as well was non-

chlorinated. He also considered the use of mechanical systems such as

toilets, solar panels, fresh water cisterns and gray water system for

toilet flush and irrigation. He also uses a fabric roofs which are

waterproof and ecologically sound due to its long lifespan though its

downside is it does not entirely block sound. To give solution to the

problem, he provided plants to serve as buffer zones. Dallan said that,

The perception of being in the vanguard is important to eco-tourists.

They know they are participating in a capitalistic venture, but are a

capitalistic venture with vision and conscience. (Albrencht, 2003)

The newspaper article began its story by the history of

wakeboarding in the Philippines. Wakeboarding was introduced by

Governor LRay Villafuerte Jr. in Camarines Sur. After its

proclamation, it then started to become the Bicols tourist drawer.

The popularization of the sport follows the establishments of

wake parks in country. Nuvalis Republic Wake Park was the latest

cable wake park that was built in Laguna. This idea threatened

Camsurs constituents and the governor for it might take away the

profitable business from them. In the email statement from the

governor of Camsur, he was able to say the beneficial factors of

wakeboarding to their place and to the countrys tourism. (Cinco,

    2011)

The fear of Camsurs governor may be true for Nuvalis

Republic Wake Park is not just near the center of the country but

because it is new, it possesses the most innovative designs and better

equipments and facilities. The President of the Philippine Wakeboard

Association and a member of the Asian Wakeboarding Council has

even thought and decided that LRay can easily convince the World

Wakeboarding Association to hold its competition this year or the next

in Nuvali. It clearly showed that technology has a big advantage in

getting clients, having more income, and producing better designs and

    comfort to the users.

This book discusses about the importance and beauty of using

fabric structures rather than using the conventional type of roofing.

The use of these kinds of shelters started even in the nomadic times

where people used animal skin and tree branches to protect them from

intense heat from the sun and prevent them from getting wet because

of the rain. As technology advances, the materials used in these

structures became more durable and long lasting. They are even

considered to be innovative and eco-friendly material. It comes with

variety of shapes and sizes, lightweight material, can be protected by

coating to provide thermal, fire, water, and UV-light resistant. It gives

elegance, uniqueness, and rich aesthetic that can be used inside or

outside, permanent or temporary, large or small, air-supported, air-

inflated, tensioned, or draped. It was introduced to the world by the

noted German architect and engineer, Frei Otto and now has played a

major role in the modern architecture. (Armijos, 2008)

The use of this tensile membrane structures are now also being

famous in the Philippines. It is used to cover sports stadiums or courts,

festive pavilions, parks, concerts, other special events, resorts, and a lot

more. If this technology will be applied to this project, it may add not

only to the visual beauty of the wake park resort, but would also add

innovation qualities of the design and could contribute in saving

    energy.

process. As this project focuses with the development of cable

wakeboard park and training center with resort, it entails a lot of

statistical details, user characteristics information, and various

backgrounds that shall be useful in governing the design process of the

    project as a whole.

    1.1Research Design1.1.1 Historical Research

History means the search for knowledge and truth. It involves

past experiences in able to seek solutions to know what is to be

done for the present and future. By describing the past events

and gathered facts from the studies before, researchers can then

learn from the errors from the past and improve more their

present studies. The methods of historical research shall include

formulating the problem, gathering source materials, and

    criticizing the resource materials.

Historical research method is very useful for this project since

it will cover the cable wakeboard parks that already exists and

has become a part of the countrys sports history and tourism.

By doing a historical research of the said topic, the researcher

then shall be able to know the origin of the sport, where and

how it was started, the first designs of the cable wake parks, the

used technologies from before up to the transition of modern

technologies invented. The history of the entities

aforementioned shall help in determining how to develop the

present studies without committing the same mistakes before

and be of great help for further studies by the future

    researchers.

1.1.2 Descriptive researchDescriptive study entails gathering information about the

present and existing conditions for an investigator to analyze

and describe the nature of a situation and explores the cause of

the particular phenomena. It generally starts with a problem and

creates a hypothesis. Hypotheses are questions needed to be

answered through collecting data. To obtain descriptive

information, the following are needed to be done:

Observation. The communication between theresearcher and the participants chosen for

investigation is the key and salient aim of this method.

Use of devices. These devices are also calleddescriptive survey instruments whereas; these are

used to conduct measurements from the identified

    participants.

Moreover, several types of descriptive research shall likewise

    be used including the following:

Case studies. It entails prelude to further and more in-depth research about a unit over a considerable period

of time that attempts to determine what factors led to

its success or failure. For the researchers specific

project, a close observation of the current situation at

the existing cable wakeboard park and resort shall be

done over the summer period (April-May 2012). The

observation and detailed description shall then be

    recorded for reference.

Surveys Survey studies are done to gather relativelylimited data from a relatively large number of cases. It

    involves determining information about variables

rather that about individuals. It is a sampling or a

partial collection of facts, figures, or opinions taken

and used approximate to indicate what a complete

collection and analysis may reveal. This method shall

be used in this study in able to gauge the publics

knowledge of water parks and resorts and how they

will respond to improvements in wake board facilities,

particularly in the application of modern technologies

    in the said project.

Trend Analysis. This method will enable theresearcher to know the peoples demands or needs in

the future. In the case of this project, the researcher

will be able to project what people seek more and

what developments they want for its future use and

incorporate those gathered data to his or her design of

the cable wakeboard park and resort. This can be done

by surveys repeated at intervals and considering the

help of the experts. The existing trends and best

practices abroad shall likewise be studied and

assessed to know if they are applicable here in the

    country.

The descriptive method is the most viable method for the

proposed Cable Wakeboard Park and Resort for there is an existing

underutilized cable wakeboard park that can be the perfect setting

    for present study.

1.1.3 Participatory Research MethodParticipatory research is when a problem is defined in

terms of the people who feel and think that something is a

problem. The people themselves were those who develop their

own theories and solutions to the problem. This method is

conducted to gathering new knowledge with the people who are

capable of defining that knowledge as the participants.

The candidate participants of this method are those

athletes, professional and non-professional, who are engaged in

wakeboarding, and other hobby wakeboard riders who think

that there are problems in existing cable wakeboard parks. Also

included are the wakeboard trainers, wakeboard fans, and

leaders or officials of any wakeboard associations. As part of

the research, an interview and consultation with these people

shall be made to know if they really see a problem and

deficiency in the current designs of cable wakeboard parks.

1.2Research InstrumentsIt has been a part of the norm of any well-founded researches that

different devices such as descriptive survey instruments are used to

conduct measurements from identified participants. Listed below are

the following instruments that are to be used in this particular research:

1.2.1 Photo DocumentationThe photo documentation will be used to capture visual

reference of existing cable wakeboard parks and other related

facilities to the project in the country. Of particular focus and

significance is the Lago de Oro Water Ski Park and Resort in

Batangas, Republic Wake Park in Laguna and the Camsur

Watersports Complex (CWC) in Bicol which are the most

famous wakeboard parks in the country and has hosted the

    World Wakeboarding Competitions.

1.2.2 Library researchIn able to seek for more knowledge and pieces of information

from secondary sources such as books, magazines, journals and

other print publications, the researcher shall visit the following

    libraries:

University of Santo Tomas-Miguel de Benavides Library National Library Online Libraries (for journals)

1.2.3 Internet ResearchThe popularity of using internet to gather fast, accessible and

updated information offering comprehensive details with

illustrations can help the researcher visualize the subject matter,

regardless of its location anywhere in the world. For this particular

project, these websites shall be much of help:

1.2.4 Interviews and SurveysInterview and surveys are very essential in data collection

especially in getting the needs and wants in the project. The

possible respondents in this project can be professional and non-

professional wakeboard riders, students, coaches, beginner riders,

association leader and groups, wakeboard owners, wakeboard

enthusiast and fans, sports analysts, or other who have not tried the

sport but has enough knowledge and those who are interested and

want to try it in the future.

For this project, a series of interviews and surveys will be done

in the countrys leading wakeboard parks where the possible

respondents can be found. The survey shall have two types of

sampling to arrive at both descriptive and inferential statistics. The

first is accidental sampling, wherein whomever the researcher

meets shall be subject to answering the survey. The second is

through convenience sampling wherein the telephone and the

Internet are used to conduct the survey.

1.2.5 Site Visit and InvestigationIt is very important that the researcher will see and explore the

probable site first hand for it give him or her an actual feel of the

place as well as the people in its periphery. It is also better if the

researcher would have a personal experience of using the

wakeboard facilities especially the cable wakeboard lake to fully

assess the current situations on the place. The researchers personal
