SOCIO -ECONOMIC ISSUES

Throughout the world, wealth and income are becoming more concentrated. Growing evidence suggests that the distribution of income–in addition to the absolute standard of living enjoyed by the poor–is a key determinant of population health. A large gap between rich people and poor people leads to higher mortality through the

breakdown of social cohesion. The recent surge in income inequality in many countries has been accompanied by a marked increase in the residential concentration of poverty and affluence. Residential

segregation diminishes the opportunities for social cohesion. Income inequality has spillover effects on society at large, including increased rates of crime and violence, impeded productivity and economic growth, and the impaired functioning of representative democracy. The extent of inequality in society is often a consequence of explicit policies and public choice. Reducing income inequality offers the prospect of greater social cohesiveness and better population standard of living. Objectives : At the end of this activity the students are expected to :

1. have an awareness of the health status and problems of the community and individual

2. find out how the government responds to the situation of the society

Activity No. 16C Overpopulation

Population growth is closely tied to economic development. Fundamentally, labor shortages will slow the rate of economic growth in industrialized countries, but on the other hand, a high birthrate in a developing country may stress limited renewable resources.

As world population continues to grow geometrically, natural resources are under increasing pressure, threatening public health and social and economic development, According to the World Bank and the United Nations, from 1 to 2 billion humans are now malnourished, indicating a combination of insufficient food, low incomes, and inadequate distribution of food. This is the largest number of hungry humans ever recorded in history. Thomas Robert Malthus (1766-1834) warned the negative impact of population growth on economic development. He argued that populations will always tend to increase past the natural levels of the food supply, and therefore public policy should encourage what he called "moral restraint" to limit the birthrate. Otherwise, argued Malthus, the per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is the measure of wealth per individual, will inevitably decline. Objectives : At the end of this activity the students are expected to :

1. describe the trends of human population growth 2. explain the basic attributes of exponential growth 3. assess the effect of population growth to the individual, society and economy
