THE LEGEND OFCURLY'S GOLD Columbia COL 476815-2 (Tk 16) Notes: Music cues used for the scene where the three NYC dudes and Curly's brother explore the cave (which is obviously a mine studio

set) in Echo Canyon. One remarks, "My daddy was in this cave." They split up in the passages. The bats wake up and attack. The Billy Crystal character falls down a pit into a mine car, which rolls and derails. Eventually they find a Wells Fargo box with gold bars. The cue starts out calmly on woodwinds until a roll of the kettledrums brings in a crescendo by the whole orchestra. The pace picks up with wild string sections and then returns to a calm passage only to finish with strong emphasis.

Compilation Boxed Set CD: WILDER WESTERN – HEISSER ORIENT – KARL MAY FILMUSIK VON 1936 - 1968 (2001) Bear Family BCD 16413 HL (8XCDs) (Disc 1 – Tk 23) Notes: The German author Karl Friedrich May (1842-1912) wrote many American western books and several German films were adopted from them. This one, “Treasure of Silver Lake,” was a German-French-Yugoslavian production and the cave scenes were shot in Croatia. The jacket cover here shows Lex Barker (as Old Shatterhand) and Pierre Brice (as Winnetou).

This cave scene comes at the end of the film where the Colonel (Herbert Lom), the leader of an outlaw band, takes three of his men and crosses the Silver Lake on a raft to the sacred treasure cave of the Utah natives. They are stopped inside the cave by Great Bear, the protector of the sacred site. The Colonel knocks him out and proceeds to examine the huge treasure trove of gold and silver objects. Then he turns and shoots his three men so as to have all for himself. Great Bear revives and pulls an iron ring on the cave wall, which causes the all the treasure and gold bars to cascade down on the Colonel. He is then swallowed by a quagmire pool.

The exteriors (the lake, travertine falls, and cave entrance) were all filmed at the Plitvice Lakes and at the Grobnicko polje in the Dinaric karst region of Croatia. The actual cave entrance was Schatzhöhle (Supljara pecina) overlooking the Kaluderovac See. Some of the interior cave scenes were done in the studio. The title of this cue means – “Descent through the Cave by the Silver Sea.” The cue starts with repeated harsh passages followed by wistful harp then a lilting woodwind and brass theme backed by mellow harp. Notes: A spoof of the Winnetou films. The Shoshones are on the warpath to get back the money they loaned to the Apaches. Abahachi, chief of the Apaches, along with three others, own a treasure map that will lead them to “The Shoe of Manitu.”

2016) ["Santa Maria finds the Shoe of the Manitu in a mountain cave where the treasure is hidden. He goes into the cave, while his gang stands guard outside. Abahachi, Ranger, and Winnetou can save Uschi and convince Hombre to join them. While Dimitri deflects the rest of the band, the others sneak into the cave. They pursue the treasure and Santa Maria, who falls through a trapdoor into a pit with oily mud and sinks into it. When they leave the cave, the Shoshone emerge. In the ensuing fight, the rest of Santa María's gang is defeated. Winnetou has lost the treasure while escaping from the cave, but Hombre tells the cunning Lurch the truth about the murderer of his son and gives him back the stolen gold.] Filming was done in Almeria, Andalusia, Spain. We are told that “The whole scene in the cave near the end is dubbed because of street noises.” (Anon. n.d.) That would suggest that the cave scene was filmed in a cave next to a road. ORIENT – KARL MAY FILMUSIK VON 1936 - 1968 (2001) Bear Family BCD 16413 HL (8XCDs) (Disc 5 – Tks 37 & 42) Notes: The story takes place in the land of the Skipetars (modern Albanians, one of the few Balkanic people who adopted the Turkish Muslim faith) “where a whole region is terrorized by the many accomplices of the secretive 'Schut' (The Shoot), one of whose rackets is kidnapping for ransom locals and especially wealthy travelers.” (Vissers n.d.) The Schut turns out to be a wealthy Persian carpet merchant. This is an adventure film with definite western elements (villain terrorizes the local population) that takes place in Albanian country, based on a story by a noted German writer of western novels. It was a multinational production filmed in Serbia and Montenegro. EL TOPO –

BAJO TIERRA (Under the Earth) * Film Music – Orchestral – Band – Instrumental

Comp: Alexandro JODOROWSKY Rts: (BMI) Scr. (Film): Alexandro Jodorowsky

Cond: John BARHAM Dir. (Film): Alexandro Jodorowsky, 1970 A. JODOROWSKY Prod. Co.(Film): Producciones Panicas Prod. (Disc): Alan Steckler Prod. Co.(Disc): Rec. Co: Sterling Sound Studios; New York Liner Notes: (From Film Book edited by Firestone) Time: 1:38 LP: EL TOPO Apple SWAD-3388 (stereo) (Gatefold cover)

12" 33rpm (Sd 1 – Bd 2) Notes: A surrealistic western with all sorts of psychedelic action telling of a gunslinger in search of spirituality. The title translates literally as “The Mole.” In part two – “El Topo awakes in a cave, to find that the tribe of deformed outcasts have taken care of him and set him up as a God-like figure, while he has been asleep… The outcasts dwell in a system of caves which have been blocked in — the only exit is out of their reach due to their deformities. When El Topo awakes, he is "born again" and decides to help the outcasts escape. He is able to reach the exit and, together with a dwarf girl who becomes his lover, performs for the depraved cultists of the neighboring town to raise money for dynamite.

“….Hijo, a young monk, grows impatient at the time the project is taking, and begins to work alongside El Topo to hasten the moment when he will kill him. At the point when Hijo is ready to give up on finishing the tunnel, El Topo breaks through into the cave. The tunnel has been completed, but Hijo finds that he cannot bring himself to kill his master.” (Anon. 2016)

The monk Hijo with outcasts in cave El Topo meditating in cave

The cave scene was filmed in Mexico in the Grutas de la Villa García, Nuevo León (not Grutas de Cacahuamilpa, Guerrero). This cue begins with a trumpet call and fanfare creating a stirring march. The trumpet carries the tune throughout finishing on a long high note. It’s hard to hear any cave like atmosphere here.
