there aren’t as many women
directors as men directors?
Discouragement Often times women
directors are discouraged
from directing.
Discouragement from
the Start
Lauren Ludwig of AFI Directing Workshop for Women believes that many times in film school women are overlooked and sometimes even discouraged from directing.

“No one asks you to direct; you need to just stand
up and declare: ‘I'm a director.’ Start doing it. Write
a script, pick up a camera, figure it out. Directing is
a multidisciplinary art form. So take writing classes,
take acting classes, learn cinematography, organize
a group of people, even if it's just on a trip to In-N-
Out. You need to be comfortable taking charge and
trusting your instincts. Put yourself in situations
where you're forced to do that. And just keep
shooting movies. Even short, no-budget ones. It's the
only way to learn. And learning is the only way to
build a career.” - Lauren Ludwig
Rejection Many women are turned down
for the chance to direct a feature film just because they
are woman.
Credentials? What are those?
Women directors are
often turned down
no matter their
credentials or their
experience with
filming.
“There was the story of the female president
of a major studio who said ‘No woman over
40 could possibly have the stamina to direct
a feature film.’ I've heard people say that the
kinds of films they want to make are too
big, too tough for a female director.” –
Martha Coolidge, director of Rambling Rose
and Real Genius.
Women Directors Here are some examples of
famous women directors who
are over the age of 40.
Kathryn Bigelow, age 61,
director of The Hurt Locker
Catherine Hardwicke, age 57,
director of the first Twilight
Mira Nair, age 55, director of
Amelia
Nora Ephron, who was 71 at
her death in 2012, director of
Julie and Julia

The numbers of female directors in the film
industry is small, just 9% of directors are
women. The two of the main reasons the
number is so small is of discouragement
and rejection.
Women shouldn’t have to take the put-downs
and the sexual remarks. Women do have
the stamina and strength to direct and film
a hit movie. Woman directors need to take a
stand and fight for their right as an
individual in America.
