A mosh pit at a rap concert? When self-proclaimed “wild boy” Machine Gun Kelly performed at The Fillmore Silver Spring on August 6, he filled the venue with aggressive but weirdly loving energy. Despite his bad-boy demeanor, MGK showed immense appreciation for his fans. The fans returned the love by jumping, screaming, and chanting along with the artist. Suddenly the mosh pit made sense. Many aspects of MGK’s performance were different from other rap shows. He crowed-surfed like it was 1977 and he was Joey Ramone. He jumped into the crowd and started his own mosh pit. And the most interesting part, he covered two different songs -- not rap songs, but

rock anthems: “All The Small Things” by Blink 182 and “Swing Life Away” by Rise Against. He even made the night extra special for one lovely couple by allowing Keith to ask Katie to marry him on stage. “This is real music, these are real musicians, not some monkey sitting behind a computer,” MGK shouted to his fans. By bringing two violinists on stage for his final song and thanking the band members individually at the end of the concert MGK showed his appreciation for music outside of hip hop. FBA Spotlight: Q&A with Matt HarrisQ: Tell me how/ you first got involved in with The FillmoreA: I saw a post on The Fillmore’s Facebook saying they were looking for interns. There was no mention of what type of internship it was, but the idea of interning for The Fillmore and Live Nation was enough for me to submit my resume.

Q: How have you seen the brand ambassador and the Fillmore Grow?A: I’ve seen the brand ambassador from the beginning. It went from just general flyering and partnerships with local businesses to having graphic designers and journalism and publicity subsections. The Fillmore has grown tremendously as well. We continue to get big names to play the venue.

Q: What’s the best thing to happen since you started working with the Fillmore?A: Before I worked at The Fillmore, I used to blow all my money on concerts, but now I go to so many for free, so that’s pretty great. Also, I’ve recently been offered a paid position at The Fillmore!

Q: Why do you continue working with the Fillmore as opposed to other venues?A: Mainly because of the people that work here: everyone is creative, fun, and motivated.

Q: Tell me about someone who has influenced your decision to be a brand ambassador. A: Jenny Williams (FBA Coordinator) is the main reason why I am a brand ambassador. She’s an excellent leader and has given me opportunities to expand my knowledge and experience in the program. Q: What do you find most challenging about the

program?A: The most challenging thing about the program is just staying on top of everything. This is a fast paced industry with many small moving parts and it’s crucial to stay organized so that nothing slips through the cracks.

Q: What would you tell someone who is thinking about becoming a brand ambassador. A: Do it! It’s a great team to be a part of and the perks are pretty sweet.

Q: What do you see yourself doing in the future?A: I want to be a production manager for a venue!

The History and Legacy of The Fillmore

Bill Graham poses in his office at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco (Fillmore Archives)

Bill Graham is the individual who put the Fillmore on the map and made the Fillmore what it is today. He was one the most legendary concert promoters of all time.

The Fillmore Auditorium (San Francisco) featured legendary acts in the mid 60’s. The auditorium featured many legendary artists such as the Grateful Dead, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Ottis Redding and many more. The auditorium was also known for it’s vibrant light shows and the cultural impact as a whole that it had in the San Francisco bay area.

After two years at the Fillmore Auditorium, Bill graham moved the venue in 1968. He spearheaded this move because of the venue’s neighborhood and its limited capacity. After this move, Graham renamed the venue “The Fillmore West” (still in San Francisco). Bill Graham closed the Fillmore West in 1971 because of his stress overload and his demanding schedule.

Bill Graham died in a helicopter crash in 1991. The people close to him decided to carry out his final wish of retrofitting and reopening the original Fillmore Auditorium. This Fillmore, now known as the Fillmore San Francisco, reopened in 1994. Live Nation took over the Fillmore brand in 2008.

Today Live Nation runs 6 Fillmore venues: The Fillmore Silver Spring, The Fillmore Detroit, The Fillmore Charlotte, The Fillmore Auditorium (Detroit), The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater, and the Fillmore San Francisco.

Reopening: The Fillmore West reopened under BG’s management in the mid 1980’s, but it closed in 1989 because of the Loma Prieta earthquake.

Bill Graham had an eastern counterpart to the Fillmore West: The Fillmore East. The venue became known as the church of rock n roll because of its legendary rock performers such as The Allman brothers, Led Zeppelin, Nash and Young, and much more. The Fillmore East also closed in 1971 and the Irving Plaza took its place.
