Manitobans heading to polls April 19 Election hopefuls from Fil-Can community

Reyes, Champagne and Marcelinos running in 41st Provincial Election

It's election season in Manitoba as Premier Greg Selinger met with Lt. Gov. Janice Filmon

earlier this week to dissolve the legislature and trigger a 35-day election campaign. Manitobans will head to the polls on Tuesday, April 19 for the 41st General Election in the province.

Selinger and his NDP colleagues have been in power since 1999, and polls heading

into the campaign spell an uphill battle for the party. The NDP are still reeling from public backlash over raising the PST back in 2013, caucus infighting and an internal leadership challenge last year.

Conservative Party leader, Brian Pallister announced that if elected, a rollback of the PST to 7% in his first term.

Liberal Party leader, Rana Bokhari opened the election

campaign by pledged full-day Kindergarten program for all Manitoba schools.

Looking for voter information? Not sure where to vote? Find out who your candidates are in your riding? Find all election answers and details about the 41st Provincical Elections at Elections Manitoba - ElectionsManitoba.ca.

Incumbent NDP MLAs Flor Marcelino (Logan) and Ted Marcelino (Tyndall Park)

will be seeking relection in their respective ridings as Manitobans head to the polls next month. Jon Reyes is the Progressive Conservative candidate for St. Norbert and Aida Champagne is the Liberal candidate for Tyndall Park.

Jon Reyes, former president of the Manitoba Filipino Business Council and co-owner of the UPS

Store at Kenaston Common is officially in campaign mode after several months of door knocking in St. Norbert. He is up against incumbent MLA Dave Gaudreau (NDP). Gaudreau won the St. Norbert riding back in 2011 by a slim margin of only 33 votes.

Representing the Liberals in Tyndall Park is Aida Champagne, current president of the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival and former president of the Filipino Seniors Group Winnipeg.

Manitoba’s Finest - Raising Hope on the Runway

Ron [email protected]

Features:

Photos by Krypton Enerio | Krypton Enerio Photography/Pixels & Giggles Photography

Sharing the runway with Blue Bomber alumni and CFL Hall of Fame wide receiver

Milt Stegall is a pretty darn good way to spend an evening. Along with a dozen gentlemen selected to participate in its inaugural signature event for the Kidney Foundation of Manitoba, I was flattered at the opportunity.

When I was asked to participate in the fashion show last fall, it was a no-brainer and instantly said yes. While strutting down the runway was an appealing part of the experience, the more important piece was the hope in building awareness and supporting kidney research. I have had family and friends challenged by having to go through dialysis treatment or are on the waiting list for a kidney transplant.

Manitoba's Finest featured the following local models: Paul Bennett, co-chair and founder of Manitoba Heroes; Paul Deniset, wealth manager at Scotia Wealth Management; Casey Irwin, owner of Irwin Technologies; Danny Kleinsasser, Danny’s Whole Hog; Andy Kloppenborg, RE/MAX Performance Realty; Dr. Paul Komenda, nephrologist and director of research at Seven Oaks General Hospital; Dr. Bruce McFarlane, orthodontist at Village Orthodontics; Chad Swayze, firefighter and executive board member with the United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg; Robert Thomas, chef, TV personality; Roland Vandal, author and motivational speaker and Milt Stegall, CFL Hall of Famer and former Winnipeg Blue Bomber.

Duterte wants to kill criminals in the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte said he will order the police and the military to find and kill all criminals as he sells himself as a ruthless leader willing to bypass the judicial system in an unprecedented war against crime.

The long-time mayor of Davao City, a lawyer, also outlined his plans if elected president before a cheering crowd of supporters, to eradicate drug traffickers. Surveys indicate his election strategy of law-and-order platform, is winning him many fans. He has now climbed into second place just four percentage points behind Senator Grace Poe, according to the latest survey by Pulse Asia released this week.

However human rights advocates do not agree about a Duterte presidency. They accuse him of organizing or tolerating vigilante squads that have targeted suspected criminals and street children in Davao, killing more than 1,000 people since the 1980s.

SC says no to TRO on K-12 Supreme Court (SC) Spokesman Theodore O. Te said the High Court during its full court session yesterday, decided not to issue a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the K-12 enhanced

education program that adds two more years in high school.

In their pleadings, most of the petitioners told the SC that the enhanced program should be stopped until other pressing

problems such as lack of classrooms and other facilities like textbooks as well as the low salary of teachers are addressed. They pointed out that the K-12 program is unconstitutional as it violates the 1987 Constitution, particularly Section 16, Article XIII as the proponents of the program

failed to conduct any significant consultation with members of the sectors who will be directly affected by its implementation.

At the same time, they said the program violates Section 5, Article XIV of the Constitution. They said more than 85, 000 faculty

members and non-teaching staffs in colleges and universities are in danger of losing their jobs since there will be no enrollees for the freshmen year once the two years of additional schooling in high school is implemented starting next school year.

PINAYS MB Inc. recognizes Carolina Custodio and Fe Ryder as outstanding Filipino women in 2016

How the Filipino pioneers became economic engines in Manitoba economy in particular and in Canada in general.

Photos by Rod Cantiveros | Filipino Journal

Would you know who inspired the thousands of Filipinos to make

Winnipeg a home; and would you know who initiated in the influx of thousand garment workers to work in the garment industry in Winnipeg since 1968?

The very foundation of the emerging Filipino community can be traced to many pioneers who had made Winnipeg City as their second homes. And these two ladies, namely, Fe Ryder and Carolina Custodio, have been honourned recently by the Pinays MB Inc. at the Pinays Recognition Luncheon at the Marlborough Hotel, coinciding the celebration of International Women's Day.

Fe Ryder (nee Viloria), one of the four Filipino nurses who had been working as exchange foreign nurses in Rochester, Minnesota, decided to try their luck to work as nurses at the Misercordia Hospital after their term had expired. Talking to Sister Lionie of The Miserecordia Sisters whom they met in Minnesota, Fe and co-workers, Melba Rous, Purification de la Cruz and Cora Liago decided to move up north, and City of Winnipeg had become their new home in 1959.

During the late 50’s and early 60’s the Winnipeg garment industry was going through a big shortage of sewing machine operators. The Government of Canada had recruited European sewing machine operators from Italy, Portugal, Poland and Greece to meet the demand of an expanding industry. Since most of them did not speak English communication was a big problem and these garments workers neededto learn the language. The opportunity for the Filipino garment workers took centre stage when Carolina Custodio, an employee of the Immigration and Employment Department saw the opportunity and suggested to hire Filipino garments who had the basic knowledge of the English language. The government of Canada took the challenge on a trial basis and sent some recruitment officers to Manila. In 1968, the first batch of garment workers arrived. Most of them were supervisors at the Philippine American Embroidery (PAE) based in Makati City.

The management of the garment companies were very pleased with the performance of the Filipino workers and this led to the influ of more than 10,000 new garment workers by 1986. These garment workers were allowed to sponsored their spouses, parents and siblings, thus the emergence of the new Filipino Community in Winnipeg.

.”During the early 60’s Drs. Roland and Irene Guzman, arrived from Ottawa, together with Pat Bigornia and other volunteers, my wife Linda Cantiveros and myself included, had helped to find the host families and secure winter clothes, boots, household items and other needs for the new immigrants”.said Rod Cantiveros.

"These immigrants contributed to the strengthen economic engine of the Winnipeg's garment factories. Many others have assisted them to adjust to their new home, new country. " Dr. Irene Guzman has shared: . "I was a practicing pediatrician but I switched to family physician because of the demands of the garment workers. They had difficulty communicating with Canadian physicians," she added. With closer contacts with the new arrivals, Dr. Roland Guzman and his wife, Dr. Irene, Pat Bigornia, Bayani and Carolina Custudio became the adopted fathers and mothers of the new arrivals, that they have become the favorite wedding sponsors of the garment workers as their petitioned would be spouses arrived in Winnipeg”.

"This is a very successful event for recognizing the Filipino women who had made contributions to the growth of the Filipino community. And I very thankful for this recognition as one of the Filipinos who arrived in 1959, and I do hope the Pinays MB Inc, will continue the objectives of this association," Fe Ryder, one of the 1st honorees for outstanding Filipino Women of Manitoba.

Prime Minister’s Day at the White House

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued the following statements

after a bilateral meeting with US President Barack Obama

during his visit to Washington on a state visit. The meeting between the leaders will help both countries transition to low carbon economies, foster clean

growth, and create great jobs and great opportunities for citizens.

Trudeau and Obama formally agreed to join the Paris Agreement in the global fight against climate change, and to take ambitious actions to reduce methane, hydroflurocarbon, and greenhouse gas emissions.

They also committed to make the borders more open and more secure, and agreed in principle to expand pre-clearance to Billy Bishop Airport in Toronto, Jean Lesage International Airport in Quebec City, as well as rail service in Montreal and Vancouver.

Both leaders agreed to a new partnership to build a sustainable Arctic economy, and will work together to develop new, science-based standards for commercial fishing, low-impact shipping, sustainable development, and Arctic biodiversity.

Further commitments to streamline trade between Canada and USA. Almost $2.4 billion worth of goods and services

cross the border on a daily basis. The leaders agreed to work in collaboration to bring trade and investment to new heights.

Canada is set to host the North American Leaders Summit in the Summer of 2016. President Obama will address Parliament

during his visit to Canada for the summit.

Trudeau stated, “Canada and the United States share the same values, the same origins, and the same space. We face many of the same challenges, and we are all better off when we tackle them together.”

Lav Diaz dedicates Berlin award to Filipino culture

“Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis” (A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery) is the longest entry ever to compete for the Golden Bear in the Berlin International Film Festival’s 66-year history. The eight-hour film won for Lav Diaz the Silver Alfred Bauer prize,

an annual award given to a film that “opens new perspectives on cinematic art”.

The Filipino director said he did the film to remind the Filipinos of our culture and history. He shared how festival jury president, Hollywood star and living film legend Meryl Streep, told him that she really liked the film as it reminds her of the old way of doing things characterized by patience and commitment.

“Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis” will open starting March 26, Black Saturday, in select cinemas nationwide. Diaz hopes the local audience will support his film despite its eight-hour running time.

Maine Mendoza, Jeron Teng win at Nickelodeon KCA

Bb. Pilipinas disqualifies another candidate

Maine “Yaya Dub” Mendoza and De La Salle University basketball player Jeron Teng were the big winners in this year’s Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. Fans voted for Maine to win the Favorite Pinoy Personality Award, beating Enrique Gil, James Reid and Kathryn Bernardo. For his part, Jeron won the Favorite Asian Sports Star by outvoting Pandelela Rinong of Malaysia, Kim Kurniawan of Indonesia and Irfan Fandi of Singapore.

The Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, also known as the KCAs, is an annual awards show that honors the year’s biggest television, movie, and music acts, as voted by TV viewers and fans. The awards night was held on

March 12 at The Forum in Inglewood, California.

The 2016 Bb. Pilipinas pageant is now proving to be controversial as the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Incorporated (BPCI) disqualified Janelle Olafson, formerly candidate number one allegedly over a photo that shows the aspiring beauty queen half-naked, with her arms covering her breast.

Olafson told ABS-CBN’s news program “Bandila” that the photo was for a breast cancer advocacy campaign she did in the past. Her disqualification came after BPCI also booted out Kim Ross delos Santos from the competition reportedly for the same reason.

The BPCI has not issued a statement yet on the issue.

PAHALANG PABABA

You may need to assure yourself that you have what it takes to succeed. Indeed, this is going to be the hardest part of the process. And even if you don’t really think you can do it, you might be better off pretending that you can. The reason is that a wonderful adjustment of energies could see you just getting on with it. You may balance unsteadily of your comfort zone for a while, but then you’ll just go for it.

What your friend’s say which you are shouldn’t pay too much attention? If you listen closely, you’ll notice that their opinions change like the weather. For instance, if they marker you an opportunist for observe a great deal and wanting to take advantage of it, you should go ahead. Anyway there’s a good chance they’ll wish they had followed your advice. Stick to your decision no matter what anyone says.

The positive blend of energies at the top of your chart could see you making a special effort to realize a goal or dream. And even if others object, you’ll have the faith to keep going. On another note, a positive alignment could see you investing in property or benefiting from your family’s kindness or sharing in a stroke of good fortune.

There’s so much research that you could be occupied for hours on end with all the information and opportunities you uncover. Even so, it’s just as well that you have responsibilities to attend to, as they help keep your feet on the ground. Over the days ahead there could be many reasons why you’re tempted to drop the normal in pursuit of the mysterious and charming. However, keep your eyes peeled, as another more practical and perhaps productive option could show up.

You may not be satisfied with small leisure and feel the strong desire to splurge on something big and expensive. This might be the case if you’ve been hard at work lately and want to reward yourself. Even so, you could be in trouble if your outflow exceeds your income. New adventures could signal. If you’re eager for some fun you might want to make travel plans.

You may find other people to be quite particularly if you’re very excited about a project or new business idea. With that in mind, you’ll need to find a way to manage your time so that you can continue to make progress while still fulfilling your responsibilities to family and friends. You might have to be secured regarding one person; especially if he or she can’t acknowledge the fact that you occasionally need your own space.

A major focus on your area of work and lifestyle could see you inventing all kinds of reasons not to get on with deadlines or other important activities. However, you’ll have no problem watching a movie or reading a fantasy novel. Even so, a major could encourage a little self-inquiry and motivate you to overcome your tiredness in order to break through your to-do list.

Money, or the lack of it, could be the reason that you need to cut back on leisure activities or social events. A tight blend of energies could see you restrain in your spending and making the most of the money you have. But you don’t have to give up having fun or socializing altogether. If you look at your expenses, you may find that with a little bit of adjustment you can continue to enjoy life without bankrupting yourself.

It might seem like you’re in the hot spot and that the buck stops ahead. However, a particularly uncomfortable blend of energies might also mean that you feel pressured into taking certain actions. Before you proceed, be sure to assess the state of play. Your plan may not be practical, and you might need further work to refine your strategy. If in doubt, get feedback from someone you trust. This could be crucial to your success.

Someone could appear charming yet try to pull the cashmere over your eyes. However, you’ll manage fine if you employ your ability to detect an uncertain deal. One opportunity might excite you, especially as it could offer you the chance to broaden your horizons. However, you’ll need to be patient if you’re to see results. It will be time to nurture you.

While it’s great to be kindly, you may find that others are starting to take advantage to you. This might leave you wondering how to respond. Don’t feel guilty about nipping this in the bud. You’ll feel so much better if you do. Inside, you may be burning to take advantage of an opportunity that could be good for you, but the time may not be right just yet. This chance should be around for a while, so there’s no need to worry.

The others might enjoy your company; you could have conflicting ideas about whether to invest in a plan that might see you making big gains on the career front. Indeed, you could feel pulled in a number of directions that might be due to others’ expectations of you, including your own. If you were to combine with a person or group, you might achieve more than you could alone.

DOST chief launches hub for aggie-aqua investors and tech users

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Mario G. Montejo recently inaugurated the DOST - Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) Innovation and Technology Center (DPITC) that will house a modern exhibition hub, a digital library, a conference facility, and a business hub.

A new platform for technology promotion, transfer and commercialization, the center offers the following services: intellectual property protection, technology assessment, licensing,

investment packaging, spin-off support, manpower training, market matching and expert services delivery.

“The DOST-PCAARRD Innovation and Technology Center is a world-class facility for research and development that proves that our local scientists and engineers are highly capable of producing world class products and services,” Montejo said. “This will serve as a One-Stop-Shop and Convergence Hub that will provide services for investors and technology users in the agriculture and aquatic sectors in the Philippines.”

Currently, the DPITC exhibits the major outputs of its Industry Strategic S&T Program (ISP), which include outputs on coconut, rice mechanization, banana, swine, abaca, and shrimp, some of the Council’s 34 ISPs.

The Center was inaugurated during DOST- PCAARRD’s week-long event dubbed SIPAG Fiesta or the Strategic Industry S&T Program on Agri-Aqua Growth - Farms and Industry Encounters through the Science and Technology Agenda. It was held March 2-4, 2016 at the PCAARRD Complex, Los Banos, Laguna.

Bongbong accuses PNoy of hate campaign against MarcosesSenator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. yesterday directly accused President Aquino of being behind a hate campaign against his family to derail his vice presidential candidacy. He cited Aquino’s statements which focuses on abuses during martial law, including the failure of Congress to pass the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL).

The senator said people are now more interested in current issues like unemployment and peace and order. He added that the president could not blame him for the failure of Congress

to pass the BBL since it was the House that failed to transmit a copy of its approved work to the Senate.

Interview Strategies: Understanding the Question Behind the QuestionMatthew Purdey | Manitoba Start

While many organizations use a standard set of

interview questions with every candidate, how you respond to these questions should be anything but standard.

To capitalize on the interview opportunity, ask yourself: What is the question behind the question? This strategy focuses on understanding why the employer is asking each question and what they really want to know so that

you can respond appropriately. Consider these commonly asked interview questions, and review the question behind the question.Tell me about yourself = Tell me about yourself as a professional.Provide the employer with an overview of your experience, education and training as well as examples of a few skills or accomplishments that are relevant to the position you have applied for.

Avoid discussing personal information such as age, marital status, birthplace, hobbies, etc.; this is of little interest to the employer in the interview context. What are your strengths? = How do your skills meet this job’s requirements?Identify a few key qualification requirements or core responsibilities of the position. Then discuss where, when and how you have performed these tasks in the past. Support your statements with examples that demonstrate your strengths in action and the results you achieved.

Avoid giving long lists of strengths, especially those that could be considered standard hiring requirements; for example: “I’m hardworking, punctual, friendly,” etc.

What are your weaknesses? = What skill would you like to learn or develop?Identify a work-related topic or knowledge requirement you would like to enhance. Select something that won’t take too long to learn, and be sure to outline the steps you are taking (or plan to take) to develop the skill.

Avoid mentioning key job requirements, negative character traits or bad habits.Describe an accomplishment you are proud of. = Tell us one story about how you made a real impact.

Use the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) technique to describe how you applied your education and experience to a real work situation. Focus on one story with specific and relevant details. Provide enough information to paint a clear picture for the interviewer.

Avoid settling for generic statements that reveal little about your efforts, such as “I provided good customer service.”Why should we hire you? = What makes you different from other applicants?

Finally, identify a unique skill, ability or experience that distinguishes you from others.

Link your unique quality to the job you’re applying for, and you will stand out for having seriously thought about how you could leverage this skill.

Avoid simply reviewing topics already discussed in the interview, and try not to rely on general education or experience, as other applicants will certainly have this as well.

The next time you’re preparing for an interview, remember to ask yourself: “What is the question behind the question?” and rehearse your answers and examples in advance. Doing this will help you to create more specific and relevant answers during your interview, which will set you apart from other candidates.

Winnipeg Jets Report

by Derick Ramos@DerickRamos

By Mike Macaraeg and Star Roxas | Filipino Journal

Leading By Example

With Andrew Ladd now with the Chicago Blackhawks, the

Winnipeg Jets have been looking for someone to step up to fill the void that their former captain left. Enter Mark Scheifele. Since being drafted seventh overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, big things have been expected from the Kitchener, Ontario native. If his recent scoring streak is any indication of things to come, the Jets may have a big piece to the

puzzle to help lead them in the future.

After losing to the Florida Panthers at home, the Winnipeg Jets played their next four contests at home starting with the New York Islanders. Mark Scheifele scored to open the game on the powerplay and added another to give the Jets a 3-2 lead late in the third. With just 29 seconds left in the game, Anders Lee scored the equalizer. In overtime, Isles Kyle Okposo capitalized on a loose

puck after hitting Nikolaj Ehlers in the face giving New York a 4-3 overtime win.

With two goals against the Islanders, Scheifele continued where he left off against the Montreal Canadiens. Scheifele scored the opening goal, the game-winning goal with seven minutes left in the third, and capped it off with an empty-net goal for his first career hat trick powering Winnipeg 4-2 over Montreal.

Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers rolled into town riding a hot goalie in Cam Talbot, winner of his last four starts. Talbot handled 39 of 40 shots that he faced and Lauri Korpikoski's goal in the second period proved to be the game winner. Scheifele scored the lone Jets goal in the 2-1 loss.

The Nashville Predators extended their streak of 13 games with a point downing the Jets 4-2. Craig Smith tallied twice for the Preds and Pekka Rinne made 21 saves in the win. Drew Stafford and Jacob Trouba scored for the Jets and Scheifele added an assist

to extend his point streak to five games.

Winnipeg dropped their third straight game at the hands of the Detroit Red Wings. Marko Dano opened the scoring on the road for his first goal as a member of the Winnipeg Jets. Tyler Myers then took a pass from Scheifele and walked around the Wings defense to go up two goals. Dylan Larkin and Jonathan Ericsson answered in the second period for Detroit and Justin Abdelkader completed the comeback with 4:36 left for a 3-2 Detroit win.

It didn't start off great but the Jets rallied to beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 at home, led by none other than Mark Scheifele. Down a pair of goals, Scheifele scored on the power play to cut the lead in half. He added an assist to Drew Stafford's third period goal and two minutes later, Adam Lowry scored the game winner. After the game, Paul Maurice had high praise for Scheifele.

"That was his finest game in the last three weeks regardless of the hat trick," the coach said.

"That's as good a game as I've seen Mark play in a long, long time."

The Jets carried the momentum against the Vancouver Canucks on the road. Marko Dano scored twice and added an assist and Scheifele scored once again recording 8 goals and 4 assists in his last 8 games. Winnipeg scored the first five goals and never looked back in the 5-2 drubbing of Vancouver.

Winnipeg concluded their two game road trip on a low note. The Calgary Flames struck for three first period goals that included ex-Jet Michael Frolik's game winner. Mark Giordana added an empty-netter and Drew Stafford scored the lone Jets goal in a 4-1 defeat.

Winnipeg Jets fans will get the chance to see their former captain Andrew Ladd twice in the next two weeks. The Jets open up a four game home stand starting with the Blackhawks. They welcome Chicago back to the MTS Centre on April 1.

March 20-April 5, 2016

March Madness? The month of March is highly

anticipated and can’t come soon enough for ice fishing

enthusiasts. The highlight of the season for many, this time of year is often referred to as March Madness around these parts. And much like the annual NCAA college basketball tournament, the action can be fast, exciting, and downright bonkers when the end of winter is in sight. With the early arrival of

spring this year however, the focus has shifted to preparing for open water fishing much sooner than usual.

The ‘madness’ this season is the fact that in all likelihood, anglers will be casting lines into soft water before the end of season date of April 4th. You read that correctly, new for 2016 is the closure of general angling being changed from the long standing

April 1st to instead coincide with the last day of grade school spring break. Anglers can legally fish this year, on ice or otherwise, up until 11:59pm on Sunday April 3rd. Keep in mind that when fishing from on top of actual ice you may still use two rods per angler, but if you are fishing into open water then the one rod per angler regulation applies regardless of the calendar date.

From now until then, however, there is still plenty of ice fishing to be done. The enormous annual Falcon Lake Winter Fish-Off takes place on March 19th. This event draws dozens of local Fil-Can competitors every year and I hope to report one of our own winning the top prize of $10,000 in the next issue. The entire length of the Red River is not recommended to go ice fishing on anymore. The popular Lake Winnipeg and Lake Manitoba

waterways can still be utilized although anglers should restrict access to walking on, small off-road vehicles, or snowmobiles. Many lakes out West in the Ducks and out east in the Whiteshell are prime at this time of year for targeting all species of trout, panfish, and huge northern pike for those looking to venture off the beaten path.

Send me by email your favourite March Madness fish pictures to be included in the ‘Ang Galing Wall of Fame’ article in a future issue. The best judged picture will win a fabulous fishing prize package.
