Big Weekend at Festival du Voyageur

Filipino capot is a hit at Voyageur Park

The opening weekend at Festival du Voyageur was extremely busy

and especially chaotic during Louis Riel Day. The near zero temperatures, gorgeous weather and sunny blue skies added to the big crowds and long line ups to get into Voyageur Park and into many of the attractions and tents.

Among the thousands that made it into Voyageur Park on Louis Riel Day included the Pascual, Manuel and Anero families. All first timers to Festival du Voyageur.

The snow sculptures, horse drawn sleigh ride were among the best highlights by everyone. For the kids, they really enjoyed the

maple taffy being poured on snow. For Joy Pascual and Jacqueline Manuel, one of their favourite memories will be walking around Voyageur Park in the custom made wool Filipino capot. Their advice for all bagong dating and first timers to Festival du Voyageur is that it's great for family photos, just make sure to arrive early to avoid line ups and dress warm.

Other attractions at Voyageur Park and Fort Gibraltar include snowshoe trail, a new kids' playground and for the adults, a licensed Snow Bar.

To avoid the lineups at the gate, purchase a day pass or 10-day Voyageur pass at heho.ca, Safeway stores, Club Regent Casino or at

Challenge Accepted at Inaugural Filipino Town Hall MeetingBy Derick Ramos

On Sunday, February 9, 2014 at the Filipino Senior Citizens Hall, members of

the Filipino community converged in the inaugural Filipino Town Hall Meeting to discuss the issues that they faced and worked together to generate possible solutions. One of the catalysts of the meeting for it to be held was the mishandling of relief funds raised during Typhoon Haiyan by the Philippines Community Centre of Manitoba. The delay in sending the money seemed to awaken a dormant Filipino community that triggered passionate discussions and strong ideas at the meeting and possibly taking steps towards unifying Filipinos across Manitoba.

Manitoba Filipino Business Council President, Jon Reyes, was the emcee of the meeting and presented questions and concerns that he received via an online survey. He also quickly diffused any possible name calling or shooting down anyone’s opinion which showed that the meeting was all about respect to one another. There were no pitchforks or torches at this meeting. No hired security. It was a trust amongst one another to find solutions in a civilized manner.

With over 100 people showing up for the meeting, group discussions were held to discuss aspects on how to make the future for Filipinos a brighter one, for this generation and the next. One common theme was how to regain the trust with the PCCM, whose board members were invited to attend the meeting but could not attend due to various reasons. The PCCM has been regarded as the face of the Filipino community but with recent events, a trust with the public was lost. That trust, however, is not beyond repair.

The meeting was a display of what Filipinos are capable of working hand in hand. Productive brainstorming of what approaches are feasible and what can be done to leave the Filipino youth of today in a strong position to not only reach their goals but surpass them. The progressive thinking of many that attended laid the groundwork for not only dealing with past and present problems but for future ones as well.

Some questions could not be fully answered but many leaders stepped up and reassured that they would try to get the answers they wanted. There were politicians, business owners, entrepreneurs,

and concerned citizens that were willing to take those difficult first steps to make sure questions were answered.

Trust takes forever to earn and just a blink of an eye to lose. There are Filipino leaders who have accepted the challenge and

are willing to meet the PCCM half way to discuss the issues that the community is facing in a civilized and a proactive manner. To make the Filipino community a more unified one, pride and ego should be left at the door by all parties. The

legacy that this generation leaves will be inherited by our children, the future generation and that is more than enough reason to start working together. The question is: Will the Philippines Community Centre of Manitoba accept the challenge?

Quezon Province Association of Manitoba scores big in Annual General Meeting of members!

If there are leaders in one of the local associations in Winnipeg to be credited for a respectable

leadership and transparency,then, the officers of the Quezon Province Association of Manitoba (QPAM), who, recently, held a successful Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the members.

The Quezon Province Association of Manitoba (QPAM), one of the oldest regional associations, has become active in the Filipino community. QPAM has initiated the yearly celebration of “Mayuhan” which celebrates “Santacruzan” with pahiyas (colourful decoration of kiping) and pabitin (aranya).Added to this Mayflower Festival, the association also commemorates the life of the Commonwealth President Manuel Luis Quezon, a popular son of Quezon Province, with a gala night.

Maggie Chan-Urbano, the newly elected president and a long time member, shares her leadership style with the Filipino Journal:Filipino Journal: When you took over the presidency of the Quezon Province Association of Manitoba, what are the challenges you might face as a leader?

Maggie Chan-Urbano: I always maintain great relationship with all the kababayans not just Qpam members. Being a member of the association for 19 years, I have learned some good traits coming from old advisers and presidents’ tenures to present. I, then use these skills with a little touch of charm to everyone. Nevertheless I keep my respect to all the old members as well as the new ones.FJ: What was your reaction when the members and the advisers attended the AGM in full force with so much enthusiasm?MCU: I find it very heart warming that they all show support and willingness to hear the latest update of the association. Most of the time I received mixed ideas and opinions that somehow we all mold it into good ideas and turn itto be a very productive meeting. Of course I also try my best to geteverybody’s participation and thanking them for their great involvement towards any discussions. As a leader it is my duty to try to turn negative feedbacks into positive ones.FJ: As a leader, what would be your advise to some other officersin terms of sincerity in commitments and transparency

of the association’s operation and management.MCU: Members and officers task for our association is merely voluntarily. As a President I can only motivate them and not force any issues and try to make things more fun, enjoyable and more productive. I always want to control the meeting by not discriminating any sensitive issues so I get everyone’s input. I have to lead by examples, by sharing ideas to make our association positively active; and I want everyone to be involved and be informed of what is going on with our association. We have to be transparent in all aspects of our governance. Secrecy and elitism have no place in our association.FJ: With many projects we have for this year and next year, what kind of commitment of the officers and members to make these projects possible and doable.MCU: If possible I want all the members to give me their 100% support for all the projects and upcoming projects. It might be difficult to mix that with youreveryday commitments but that is what all presidents could wish for. I always want to turn all these projects into something that we could show some interest in, something we all could enjoy doing and worthwhile.

Lou Fernandez elected new PCCM PresidentStill no date for open community forum

The Philippine-Canadian Centre of Manitoba (PCCM) has a new president and vice-

president. Former Vice-President Lou Fernandez now assumes the role and responsibility as the new

PCCM President and Oscar de Paula is Vice-President.

Rounding out the executive are Agnes Rodgers, Treasurer; May Deculing, Assistant Treasurer; Jonalyn Navarro Espero, Recording Secretary; Rey Sangalang, Correspondence Secretary; and Jing Asperin, Auditor. The remaining directors include, Lito Taruc, Pastor Reymus Cagampan, Nap Ebora, and Jojo Lorenzo.

Forty days after the AGM and several announcements on CKJS Radio 810, Pilipino Express, TFC Balitang Canada, PCCM President Lou Fernandez has not yet announced a concrete date for an open community meeting with the

new board of directors. It’s been all talk and no action, and next to little engagement by individual PCCM directors within the community.

It was almost the same time last year in mid-February that PCCM held their 2013 Annual General Meeting. It was also around the same time that Lito Taruc, immediate past president of PCCM removed Mike Pagtakhan, Rowena Oquendo, Jun Oquendo, Liberty Namit, and Marianne Ferrer from their elected board positions for neglecting to renew their memberships. This was in Taruc’s President’s Report during the January 11th AGM.

Also disclosed at the AGM was the PCCM Profit & Loss Statement

dated April 2012 to March 2013. The financial report was approved and passed easily without debate. However, the Profit & Loss Statement only indicates one membership fee of $12.00 collected during that time period. If only one membership fee was collected, why were the other directors allowed to stay on the board? Who was the sole PCCM member during last year's AGM? Why did Taruc, or membership committee chair, Jing Asperin neglect to inform his own board members to pay for their membership?

During the Filipino-Canadian Town Hall Meeting, Mike Pagtakhan shared his PCCM board experience on the matter. Pagtakhan was serving the first of a three year term and even offered to pay for his $12 membership. Taruc refused to accept payment of his membership

fee, and thus terminating Pagtakhan’s directorship.

While all directors are all unpaid volunteers, each and every PCCM director should be held to a higher standard. Directors are entrusted with money and property of the corporation and have fiduciary responsibilities to act in the best interest of the community.

The entire community will be watching and will continue to evaluate every decision made by the board. Directors need to understand and be completely aware of their responsibilities. Directors not willing to accept their responsibilities and claim that they did not know or continue to give excuses should consider resigning.

To see over 100 attendees during the Town Hall Meeting was truly a proud

moment for all the Filipinos in Winnipeg. It was indeed a “history in the making” for our growing community. Many members of different associations and individuals who were present on this day were passionate and have a lot of pride in our heritage.

The Town Hall meeting was conducted professionally with moderators and we had everyone involved with group sessions and the question and answer period. Like our Filipino values that we practice, we were open, inviting and hospitable to all those that attended. There was great participation throughout

and no confrontations whatsoever as those who did not attend may have anticipated.

Just to be clear to all the non-attendees, the Town Hall meeting was not a meeting about forming a new organization which unfortunately has been so common for organizations to do when there is a fallout or disagreement. One of the town hall participants even said "PCCM was built for the people, for all of us Filipinos". Let us move on and rectify the issues instead of focusing on the past. Even after the meeting adjourned, no one wanted to leave because everyone felt positive about the future in working together.

What the town hall attendees and the majority in our Filipino-Canadian community want to see is “Our Centre” the PCCM, represented by the new Board of Directors to have a similar open forum. The former Vice President and now PCCM President Lou Fernandez stated in his CKJS radio address back on January 27th that there would be such an event . No date has yet to be announced when this PCCM open forum would be.

A pinay’s guide to getting hitchedI’d like to introduce this column by referencing one of the sassiest phrases in recent history: if you like it, then you better put a ring on it.

And that’s exactly what happened.

Last year, my then boyfriend Kevin and I decided to take a huge leap into the wild world of real estate ownership. On the first faithful day of walking into our home sweet home, my now fiancée went down on one knee on our front porch and proposed. The rest, as they say, is history.

Actually, it’s history in the making.

Today, I’ve earned the coveted title of bride-to-be, and with this namesake comes great responsibility. From bridal showers to cake tastings to dress fittings, the pride of becoming a bride can often be outshone by the

overwhelming task of planning the entire affair.

Rest assured, my fellow bride-kind, for you are not alone. While I certainly don’t consider myself an expert, I can offer some real world perspective on what to expect when you’re ready to tie the knot.

From now until my summer shindig, I’ll be sharing my personal insights on what rocks (and reeks) about planning a wedding. For the most part, it’s rainbows and butterflies – but all brides (and grooms) should be weary of a few cautionary signs.

I’ll kick this column off with a few bits of advice every couple should take into consideration within the first few months after the initial engagement.•Buy a wedding planning book (or better yet, make your own – there are plenty of DIY spreadsheets on

Pinterest). It’s crucial to catalogue your budget, vendors, guest list, and décor ideas on paper to reference leading up to the big day.•Figure out your financials. Create a realistic budget (and stick to it!). Make sure to factor in funds allocated from your personal savings, and families on both sides.•Book your venue ASAP. Winnipeg has a limited number of wedding venues, especially if you’re planning a larger party. Wedding dates are often booked years in advance, and you can easily avoid disappointment by

making your deposit well ahead of time.•Don’t jump the gun on picking out your wedding party. Depending on how soon you plan on getting hitched, many things can change in life between the proposal and the marriage date. Wait until you’re certain your circle of friends will still be close come wedding time.•My final piece of advice is: be prepared to answer a lot of questions. The moment your status changes, friends and family will immediately start asking when and where you’re getting

married, how soon you plan on moving in together, what colour your dress is and what kind of details to expect on your wedding cake. It’s absolutely okay if you don’t know the answers to these questions (yet).

Though planning a massive party is something everyone can look forward to, it’s important to remember what all your efforts are for. It’s a celebration of you and your future life partner. Don’t miss any opportunity to sit back, soak it all in, and enjoy each other’s company – after all, you’ll be seeing a lot of each other!

On February 3, 2014, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte testified

before a Senate committee what he knew about David Tan. He said that Tan was the central figure in rice smuggling in the country.

A senator asked him if he knew how Tan looked like? Duterte produced a photo of Tan that he claimed was given to him by police investigators. When he was asked if Bangayan -- who was seated a few feet away -- was the same person as the one on the photo, he said Davidson Bangayan and David Tan are one and the same person. He then said in front of Davidson that if he were caught smuggling in his city, he “will gladly kill” him. Instantly, Duterte became a celebrity.

Duterte’s reputation as a “crime fighter” began in 1988 when he was elected mayor of Davao City, the world’s largest city in land area. At that time, Davao City was called the “Murder Capital of the Philippines.” But the killings were mainly between New People’s Army (NPA) hit squads – called “Sparrow Units” -- and a vigilante group known as “Alsa Masa” (Masses Arise). In 1987, the NPA assassins went into hiding after the Alsa Masa killed more than 100 of their members. By 1988, the NPA had retreated

from the urban centers, and the killings stopped; and Alsa Masa faded into hibernation.

However, in the mid-1990s, a new vigilante group surfaced. Called the “Davao Death Squad,” or DDS, the group is allegedly responsible for the summary executions of drug traffickers, kidnappers, petty criminals, delinquents, gang members, and other lawbreakers.

Murder capital

In 2003, when human rights advocates claimed that Davao City had become the country’s “murder capital,” Duterte responded in his TV program “Gimmick for the Masses,” saying: “I admit I am 100 per cent terrorist but I am terrorizing only the drug pushers, kidnappers, holdup gangs, and other criminals.” He said, “Kidnappers, drug pushers from other places, I dare you to come over here so that I can finish you off. Davao City will be a murder capital for you. This will continue up to the end of my term.”

Although Duterte was never proven to be associated with DDS – which was often referred to as “Duterte Death Squad” -- he had made public statements that seemed to encourage or condone those killings. In February 2009, he told reporters: “If you are doing an illegal activity in my city, if you are a criminal or part of a syndicate that preys on the innocent people of the city, for as long as I am the mayor, you are a legitimate target of assassination.”

The spate of killings in Davao City attracted the attention of the international group Human Rights Watch (HRW). HRW conducted a study and released a 103-page report entitled, “You Can Die Any Time: Death Squad Killings in Mindanao.” The report detailed the involvement of police and local government officials in targeted killings of alleged drug dealers and petty criminals, street children, and others, and described the lack of any effort by the authorities to investigate the killings and bring the culprits to justice.

But Davaoeños liked what Duterte was doing for their city. In the Official Website of Davao City, it featured him on February 25, 2012, to wit: “ ‘Digong’, as his closest friends call him, or ‘Rody’, or simply, ‘Duterte’, may have ruled Davao City with what some call ‘iron-fist’, and rid the city of criminals. His hatred for criminals changed Davao City; from the ‘Murder Capital

of the Philippines’ to the ‘One of the Most Peaceful Cities in the Philippines’.”

“Duterte for President”Under Duterte’s leadership,

Davao earned a string of awards, both local and international, year after year. These accolades are a testament to his vision of a crime-free city. It’s no wonder then that Davaoeños reelected him 1992 and 1995. Termed out in 1998, he ran for the House of Representatives and won as congressman representing Davao City’s 1st District. In 2001, he ran again for mayor and was elected to his fourth term. He was reelected in 2004 and 2007. Termed out again in 2010, he ran for vice-mayor of Davao City while his daughter Sara “Inday” Duterte-Carpio ran for mayor. In 2013, Sarah decided not to run for reelection; thus, paving the way for her father’s comeback as the city’s mayor. Duterte ran again for mayor and was elected to his seventh term.

After he was elected mayor in 2013, Davao City received another accolade: The world’s “fourth safest place” in a poll conducted by the website Numbeo.com. Out of 349 entries, Davao City was the only metropolis in the Philippines that made it to the “Top 10.” The result was posted online, which was lauded by netizens all over the country. Some of the postings said, “Duterte for President.”

Anti-crime crusader

Last February 12, President Benigno Aquino III was in Davao City to attend a summit meeting of the leaders of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). According to reports, Aquino did not smoke in compliance with Davao City’s strict “no smoking” policy. He also ordered his convoy to adhere to the city’s speed limit policy. This elicited reaction from Duterte who told reporters, “We have a law-abiding President.”

But even his daughter Sara Duterte-Carpio was not exempt from these policies. Last month, the police reportedly arrested her for violating the speed limit policy.

Back in 2002, an article appeared in TIME Magazine that tagged Duterte as “The Punisher.” It portrayed him as mayor, legislator, judge, jury, and – possibly – executioner, all rolled into one. It’s a reputation that he built over the years, which transformed his city from a haven for criminals to one of the most peaceful places on Earth. Indeed, after more than 25 years in public service, Duterte has yet to mellow out as an anti-crime crusader.

But notwithstanding all the good things that had happened in Davao City, one wonders if Duterte’s use of the Machiavellian aphorism, “The means justifies the end,” was compatible with democratic principles, which begs the question: “Is the Filipino worth killing for?”

Mahilig Ka Ba sa Likhang Sining?(On Some Contemporary Artists/Painters)

When asked about painters, many people automatically cite the

likes of Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Picasso, and Monet. They rarely acknowledge contemporary artists and their equally respectable and distinctive works. Being an enthusiast of art, I occasionally check out works by contemporary artists by attending art exhibits or, at the least, searching the Internet for images of new artworks by contemporary artists.

Here are two contemporary American artists whom I discovered only recently: Dan May, who is originally from New York; and Jason Limon, from Texas. Both artists specialize in Fantasy Art. Much of their works have been described as examples of the contemporary art style dubbed as ‘suggestivism’ – “an art concerned with a vision of the ideal” and a “style of poetic mysticism and psychological intensity.” May’s works include

Moon Walk, The Night Watch, Stay Off the Grass, Sting of the Season, Totem, and Portrait of a Gentle Man. I regard his furry creatures as improved and more-detailed versions of the monsters of Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are, 1963). Works by Limon include Foliage, Fragment no. 58, Mr. Winter, Red Spiraled Panda, Transfigured Bloodline, and Wakening; his style harks to the surrealist works

of the German painter Max Ernst (1891–1976) and the Spanish artist Salvador Dalí (1904–1989). Ernst’s popular works include The Fireside Angel (1937) and ‘Ubu Imperator’ (1923); Dalí’s are Apparatus and Hand (1927) and The Persistence of Memory (1931).

Unknown woman charges Vhong Navarro with rape

The media bedlam on the scandal involving Vhong Navarro against model

Deniece Cornejo and businessman Cedric Lee has not yet died down but the actor-host is facing another legal battle as another rape complaint against him was filed by an anonymous woman.

The new complaint was filed on Wednesday at the Pasig City Prosecutor Office by the alleged victim and her lawyer Virgilio Batalla.

According to Batalla, the alleged rape happened in 2010. Batalla added that he cannot answer

for his client why she decided to file the charge just now.

The second hearing on the cases filed by Vhong and Cornejo will be on February 21.

Getting into the Olympic spirit with CBC Radio Morning Show Games

Since I'm not a morning person, waking up at 4am to watch the Sochi Olympics

on CBC for the past week has been challenging. When I was invited by CBC Radio 990 to participate in their Morning Show Games

and represent Team Philippines, I jumped at the chance to represent our community.

The four events of the CBC Radio Morning Show Games included luge, ice hockey, speed skating and the biathlon. Luge was

It’s not the NHL Outdoor Classic and I’m all geared up with my Team Philippines hockey jersey and my Winnipeg Jets toque over my helmet in the ice hockey competition.

basically a toboggan run along a man-made luge-like track on the banks of the Assiniboine River in St. James.

The ice hockey competition was in an epic backyard hockey rink complete with bleachers made out of snow. As the "captain" of the Philippine national ice hockey team, I was there to dominate the fun, light-hearted competition.

The third sport in the Morning Show Games was completed early Thursday morning. It would be my first time on speed skates and I was in for a treat. With Canada winning as many medals in Sochi and Vancouver in 2010, I was pretty excited to race on speed skates. The skates are longer and thinner than regular hockey skates. In a photo finish, I won the speed skating competition.

The final sport of biathlon, which will be a combination of cross country skiing and instead of a rifle, competitors will be armed with a harmless Nerf gun. Competition should be fierce, and most importantly, fun.

My results from the three competitions before the Filipino Journal goes to the printer is 2nd place in the luge event and 1st place for hockey and speed skating.

Oly Merluza gets the big surprise in his birthday bashPlanning a surprise party for a

loved ones is a delicate and very secretive undertakings.

Sometimes, the celebrant knows the party ahead and pretends to grace the affair as if he or she does not know the surprised party, just not to let down the organizers. But some organizers are lucky enough to cover-up the plans, and it is the deepest secret among family members and friends. Ask Precy Merluza, a candidate for Mrs. Philippines-Manitoba 2014, and

her two sons and daughter in law, Neil and his wife, Larica; and Justin, designer/event planner, their relatives and their friends how they fully surprised Oly Merluza, vp internal,QPAM, when he celebrated his 50th birthday at Marigold Inkster.

The day before his surprised birthday bash, Oly was helping Justin and his family decorate the Marigold Hall for an 18th birthday

celebration. The decor was done beautifully (as some Marigold staffscommented: “Never to see that kind of beautiful decoration ever mounted in this restaurant.) And the ambience was intiemate, so private, not kowing that this hall would be the place where he would celebrate his 50th birthday. Thanks to Justin (Just_In Couture) whose talents and time were poured to make this affair unforgetable. And thanks to his wife, Precy, Neil and Larica and the Merluza clan members and

friends to made possible to make his birthday a real surprised affair.At the night of celebration, Oly was accompanied by his friends. He almost decided not to go out, instead, just to stay home and enjoy some shots of whisky. And when he arrived, he almost lost his composure, and tears rolled on his cheek; and welcomed by his wife, Precy and his two sons,relatives and countless friends!

Celebrations started and Oly was greeted with birthday songs. Still awed and surprised, Oly went to the various tables to meet the guests. "Oh, Tony, I met you at Polo Park yesterday and you did not tell me...collaborator!", the smiling Oly teased Florencio Antonio who was seating with his wife Letty Antonio, OFSAM president; and Clarita Nazario of Bulacan Association.

and members were all out to celebrate with him led by Allan de la Cruz, the former president! And the QPAM officers led by Maggie Chan Urbano, the president. Oly is the vice president; and of course, his brothers and members of the Merluza clan!

Program was led by Oly and Precy’s son, Neil and Justin and started with the dance with his wife, Precy. Letty Antonio, chair, selection committee MaCCFA, had introduced Precy Merluza as one for MaCCFA's quest for Mrs. Philippines Manitoba 2014, the proceeds from this annual contest will go to help the victims of Haiyan typhoon for reconstructions.

Dancing followed and everyone enjoyed the party, a very special party, a surprise party, for Oly Merluza's 50th birthday! The guests enjoyed the food, the snack and most specially the 4 birthday cakes! yummy!

Santo Niño devotion heats up devotees in frigid January celebration

The traditional Santo Niño devotion is held during the late January in Cebu, and

to feel its very spiritual meaning in Winnipeg, the officers and members of the Filipino Canadian Senior Association( FILCASA) and the Bisayan Association of Manitoba (BISAMAN)joined together to celebrate this historic event with a mass by Fr. Batucan and a simple procession at the FILCASA Hall.

Led by Josie Rana of Bisaman and Ella Yambao, president of FILCASA, the Santo Nino devotion took place under a frigid January weather, but so much enthusiasm and joy heat up with so much blessings among

the devotees who attended this important religious ritual.

If there is one Filipino Canadian, a Calgarian speed skater who has become the subject of countless

editorials, news stories, columns,

in print and in broadcast all over Canada, and has become the symbol of selflessness, it is no other than Gilmore Junio who gave the spot to his team mate Denny Morrison.

And Morrison took this opportunity to run and garnered a silver medal in the 1,000 meter speed skating at Sochi Olympic. Morrison said, as reported by Canadian Press; "It's a dream, a fairytale story. It's difficult to really believe that it's happening."

In the Sochi Olympic, Morrison, a top male long track speed skater, was not suppose to run because of the negative turn of events during the Olympic qualifying tournament. And lo and behold, Gilmore Junio surrendered his spot in the 1,000 meters. And Junio humbly said they were in

Sochi, not only to compete but to win. And a result, Morrison not only won silver medal but also a bronze in the 1,500 metre run.

An on Morrison's campaign to have Gilmore as the flag bearer at the closing ceremony, he said:"May that's something we can get behind, because i think that would be really special...He (Gilmore Junio) does embody that is means to be an Olympian."

In the story written by Jerry Caingcoy of Alberta Filipino Journal, Gilmore Junio was featured to highlights his dreams, his passion and his family. Caingcoy writes: “Again and again, we've heard of Filipino achievers aboard. They're truly inspirational but here's one Filipino achiever who has broken the barriers on a league uncommon to every Filipino. It's a "man bites a dog" kind of story. This is the case of Gilmore Junio. He is a Filipino superstar on ice. Yes, on ice! He is not just an ordinary ice skater but a SPEED SKATER!"

And he is bound for the Sochi Olympic 2014, the first Filipino Canadian to be a part of Canadian Team!

Caingcoy continues with a Winnipeg connection: "Gilmore Junio is a 23-year long track speed skating athlete born to Filipino immigrant parents who immigrated to Canada in the seventies. Although he was born and raised in Calgary, he is proud of his Filipino heritage. His father, Gino Junio, who hails originally from Bacolod City, immigrated to Canada at the age of twenty-four through a job acceptance program. He worked

as a machine operator in Winnipeg but eventually moved to Calgary to find a greener pasture. Gino Junio was a manager when he retired. He is married to Julie Tantay, a native of Pangasinan who had been working for 25 years as a reservoir technologist for a progressive oil and gas company. Gino and Julie have three children- two boys and a girl. Gilmore is the youngest in the family. His older brother is a hockey player."

And in the editorial in the recent Winnipeg Sun issue, a Sun Media paper, extols that Olympics provide true role models! And the editorial cited: "Then there is Gilmore Junio. He is the speed skater who gave up his spot to Denny Morrison who did not qualify. Junio said that he felt Morrison was the better skater and Morrison went on to win us silver medal. Talk about sportsmanship. Talk about teamwork. Talk about true role model for your youth!"

The other role model cited is Alexandre Bilodeau who won a

gold medal in men's moguls who taught us humility when honored his win to his brother, Frederic, who has a cerebral palsy.

And Gilmore Junio is looking ahead to the 2018 Winter Olympic which will be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea.”So I thought maybe in four years, hopefully, my 500 will be good and my 1,000 will be even better, that I won’t have to make this decision. Maybe someone will make it for me,” he said at the Canadian Press.

A Filipino Canadian, the pride of all kababayans here and abroad, a role model for the youth, a golden asset for Canada and for the Canadian team, Gilmore Junio stands tall as a true Olympian!

Winnipeg Jets Report

The Winnipeg Jets and the rest of the National Hockey League took a three week

break as the 2014 Olympics in Sochi commenced. Four members of the Jets flew to Russia to represent their countries while the rest of the team will have the chance to refuel their tanks. With just 22 games left on the schedule, every ounce of energy will be needed as they set their sights on a playoff berth.

Fresh off a three game winning streak, the Jets visited their old Southeast Division rivals,

the Washington Capitals. After exchanging goals in the first period, Dustin Byfuglien snapped a shot past Caps netminder Braden Holtby to give the Jets a 2-1 lead going into the third period. However, the Caps found another gear in the third period scoring three goals. Alexander Ovechkin was once again the thorn in the side of the Winnipeg Jets potting the game winner. Troy Brouwer added an empty netter for his second of the game.

Refuelling for Stretch Drive

The Jets did not have much time to lick their wounds as they headed to St. Louis to take on the Blues two nights later. The Central Division battle was another tight affair as their previous three encounters were all decided by one goal. In the back and forth contest, Mark Scheifele scored twice and Dustin Byfuglien forced extra time with a powerplay goal with just over six minutes left in the game. Overtime determined nothing and a shootout was needed to decide the winner for the second time this season. Vladimir Tarasenko scored the winner as the Jets failed to get one past Brian Elliott. Jets goalie Al Montoya stopped 23 Blues shots in the loss.

After the game, Mark Scheifele felt that the Jets played well and wasn’t discouraged by the loss.

“We know we played a good game and for it to come down to a shootout is a tough way to end it,”

Scheifele said. “Tough way to lose but we fought hard and that’s a big thing.”

The Winnipeg Jets have surged since Paul Maurice relieved Claude Noel of coaching duties and only

sit two points out of a playoff spot. With only 22 games remaining on the schedule, every point is crucial and the Olympic break may be what they need to secure their first trip to the postseason since moving from Atlanta.

Martinez’ performance awes Winter Olympics crowd Michael Christian Martinez made a strong impression with his performance in front of a highly-appreciative crowd watching the 2014 Winter Olympics at the Iceberg Skating Palace in Sochi, Russia.

The 17-year-old Martinez, the youngest among the 24 finalists in the free skate program, regaled the crowd with impressive moves that made them wonder as to how the Philippines can produce such a graceful performer on ice.

Japanese Yuzuru Hanyu garnered 280.09 points to take the gold medal, while Patrick Chan of Canada and Denis Ten of Kazakhstan got the silver and the bronze, respectively. Although Martinez finished with total of 184.25 points which is good for 19th place, even the commentators were so awed that one of them

declared a bright future for the Filipino figure skater owing to his young age.

Speaking after his performance, Martinez said his next goal is to qualify and take part in the next Winter Games in 2018 in Pyeongchang, Korea.

Meanwhile, Deputy presidential spokesman Abigail Valte urged the private sector to pour in more support for Martinez in his upcoming competitions, especially his preparations for the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Valte added that the private sector provided financial support for Martinez in his Sochi Olympics bid. She also said Martinez received support from the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), and the Philippine Ice Skating Union.

She Blew Them Away with Not Just a Kiss(On the Alternative Pop of P!nk)

Among the number of celebrity Pop artists who regularly walk the red

carpet and the stage to claim their trophies during many a music awards night, P!nk is among the few whom I fancy. Her glamour or style has really nothing to do with it. Rather, her music is what drew me to her. After all, I am the type of a music enthusiast who loves music primarily for musicality’s sake. The artist’s sense of fashion, stage antics, and live performance are just bonus points; while the personal lifestyle, out of the equation. And speaking of P!nk’s music, I liked it better than the music of other celebrity P o p a r t i s t s l i k e B r i t n e y S p e a r s , Miley Cyrus, and Justin Bieber primarily because of its strong ties with Alternative Rock music, a favorite genre of mine. P!nk has collaborated with the Alternative Rock artists Linda Perry, Tim Armstrong, and Nate Ruess.Discography ReviewCan’t Take Me Home (2000)

The overall sound of P!nk’s debut album is inevitably

less organic and more digital in instrumentation—for this reason that it may be considered P!nk’s most Pop-sounding music. Nonetheless, good songwriting is still apparent—“Split Personality,” for instance, features a Latin-styled Classical guitar melody line. “Hell wit Ya” has a sinister keyboard melody that sounds like a glass-slippered tiptoe. "Most Girls" resonates a Hip-hop style of Coolio (particularly "Gangsta Paradise") and Kanye West's "Diamonds

Are Forever"). Again,

there's a melody looping in the background that sounds like an Indian wind instrument known as a snake charmer's been. “There You Go” is an apt representative of Pop of the 2000s—a blend of Hip-hop and R n' B—danceable, staccatoish, and syncopated beat.

"Stop Falling" is the album's slow, soulful ballad carried by catchy piano and Classical guitar riffs—reminds me of Paula Abdul's "Rush, Rush." "Do What You Do" is practically a twin of "There You Go" in terms of the choppy bass lines and telegraphic drumbeats. "Is It Love?" is a good album closer—subtle and relaxing beat and mood, but there's the catchy element again –a repetitious rhythmic strumming of what sounded like a synthesized guitar.Missundaztood (2001)

This is the album of P!nk that endeared her to many Alternative music enthusiasts. It’s practically P!nk’s collaborative songwriting effort with Linda Perry, the vocalist of the ’90s-forming U.S. Alternative Rock band 4 Non Blondes (“What’s Up?”). Notable also were the vocal contributions of Steven Tyler of Aerosmith and Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi in the song “Misery.” Other recommended songs are “Get the Party Started,” “Don’t Let Me Get Me,” “Just like a Pill,” and “Family Portrait.”Try This (2003)

P!nk’s third album has further cemented her Alternative

music credibility. It is notable for being a collaborative work with Tim Armstrong, the multi–Grammy Aw a r d – w i n n i n g vocalist well known for his Punk Rock band Rancid.

The sold-out Winnipeg leg of P!nk’s Truth about Love Tour, at MTS Centre, on January 14, 2014, was a blast. It was a spectacle of good session musicians, dancers, fireworks, Cirque du Soleil–type of circus arts and street entertainment, songs from every album, and acoustic rendition of a few songs—how a typical Pop concert should be. P!nk opened her show with the guitar-jangly and foot-stomping “Raise Your Glass”; just onto the first song and the crowd was already in a sing-along mood because of this. She followed this up with a string of originals—“Walk of Shame,” “Just like a Pill,” “U + Ur Hand,” “Leave Me Alone (I’m Lonely),” and “Try”—before dishing out a cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game.” By this time, the crowd had really warmed up already, singing and cheering here and there; and their eyes were

also captives to the circus-like choreography of P!nk and her backing musicians and dancers. P!nk was impressively fit to be able to stage those tiring moves while belting her hits. The loudest response from the crowd, who couldn’t help but to sing along, was ”Blow Me (One Last Kiss).” P!nk closed the concert with one encore—“So What”—which she sang while she was on a trapeze that swayed from corner to corner of the entire arena—a magical pink spectacle indeed!Final Note

Born Alecia Beth Moore on September 8, 1979, P!nk started her singing career around the age of 13 as the vocalist of a school band and then, at 16, as a part of an R n’ B group until she finally went solo in 1998.

Why checking off the wrong box can bar you from Canada for 2 years

What does it mean to misrepresent yourself on your immigration

application? According to Citizenship and Immigration Canada, a misrepresentation occurs “when a person makes false statements, submits false information, or submits false or altered documents”

It is important to note that, though not all cases of misrepresentation involve an individual intentionally withholding or leaving out information, it is always the responsibility of the individual making an application to make

sure that all questions are answered honestly and truthfully. The importance of double-checking your immigration application is seen in the September 2013 case of Goburdhun v. Canada (Citizenship and Immigration).

In this case, Mr. Goburdhun had applied for and was refused a temporary resident visa by Citizenship and Immigration Canada in 2011. Mr. Goburdhun then applied and was issued a work permit in 2012 which was valid for 2 years.

After applying for his work permit in 2012, Mr. Goburdhun reapplied for the second time for

a temporary resident visa, and when answering the question “Have you ever been refused any kind of visa, admission, or been ordered to leave Canada or any other country?”, checked the “no” answer checkbox. He did not disclose being refused a temporary resident visa in 2011.

The Immigration Officer who was reviewing his second temporary resident visa application refused it on the basis of misrepresentation. As a result, Mr. Goburdhun was barred from Canada for 2 years.

Before refusing the application, the Officer wrote to Mr. Goburdhun and gave him an opportunity to explain what happened. Mr. Goburdhun said that a clerical error was made by the immigration consultant who helped with his application and that it was not an intentional mistake. Although Goburdhun indicated that he did not fill out the application form himself, it was his responsibility to ensure that the answers were correct.

The Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) indicates that “…a foreign national is inadmissible for misrepresentation for directly or indirectly misrepresenting or withholding material facts relating to a relevant matter that … could induce an error in the administration of this Act”. Before deciding on whether there is a misrepresentation, the following principles must be considered:

• Misrepresentations made by an immigration consultant, with or without the applicant’s knowledge, is still a misrepresentation;• An exception to this can occur only when the applicant honestly and reasonably believes that the facts presented in their application are true;• In order to deter individuals from misrepresenting themselves on their applications, the onus is always placed on the individual making application;• Although an applicant may have hired another individual to fill in their application form, the applicant is the one who is ultimately signing their name on the form, confirming the information contained within to be true. Therefore, claiming that a clerical error is the reason for the misrepresentation is still a misrepresentation ; and• An applicant cannot use to their advantage the fact that a misrepresentation may not be caught on the initial review of their application – the analysis of materiality is not limited to a specific time period of the review process.

When Mr. Goburdhun denied having been refused a temporary resident visa the previous year, all that the Immigration Officer needed to do was check his immigration history in order to see that he had been refused. Although the information is already available on the Officer’s computer, questions about previous immigration history

still appear on immigration applications.

Because the officer had information on his past history, Mr. Goburdhun tried to argue that the incorrect answer was “immaterial”; essentially, he was saying that if Citizenship and Immigration Canada already knew the answer, then the clerical error should not matter. The reality of the situation is quite the contrary. Mr. Goburdhun’s lack of diligence in ensuring the accuracy of his own application was the problem. Whether Citizenship and Immigration Canada had this information on its files did not take away from the fact that this was a misrepresentation.
