Hello everyone! We have created a guide for HDK users with bricked units to unbrick their units themselves. This guide is very straightforward, but does require opening up your unit and pressing a few buttons. We have included a video thanks to Haico1992 of the unbricking process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ch1h7N5hzqw Required items: Open USB Port HDK 1.X Firmware Hex files: https://github.com/OSVR/OSVR-Docs/blob/master/Utilities/HDKFirmwareVer sions.md ATMEL Flip software: http://www.atmel.com/tools/FLIP.aspx 1. Download ATMEL Flip link above. 2. Download the latest firmware for your HDK version through the Github link above. 3. Open up the HDK faceplate very carefully. There are two small Philips screws on the underside of the HDK. The faceplate is magnetic, after removing those two screws, the rest should be fluid. The backside of the faceplate is the IR array and a ribbon cable attaching to the motherboard. Do not tug on this ribbon cable, it is very delicate. You will be able to have access to what we need without removing this cable. Lay the faceplate gently beside the rest of the HDK unit.

Hello everyone! We have created a guide for HDK users with bricked units to unbrick their units themselves. This guide is very straightforward, but does require opening up your unit and pressing a few buttons.

We have included a video thanks to Haico1992 of the unbricking process:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ch1h7N5hzqw

Required items:

Open USB Port

HDK 1.X

Firmware Hex files: https://github.com/OSVR/OSVR-Docs/blob/master/Utilities/HDKFirmwareVersions.md

ATMEL Flip software: http://www.atmel.com/tools/FLIP.aspx

1. Download ATMEL Flip link above.2. Download the latest firmware for your HDK version through the Github link above. 3. Open up the HDK faceplate very carefully. There are two small Philips screws on the underside

of the HDK.

4. Plug in the HDK into the belt box and plug in USB to the belt box. Attach the USB from the belt box to a USB 2.0 Port. (3.0 does not work) and attach power.

5. Hold down SW2, and press SW1. (SW2 is the bootloader switch, and SW1 resets the chip.)

6. atxmega256a3bu should pop up in the device manager and ATMEL Flip.

7. Click on the USB cable icon in FLIP and select "USB" then open the device8. In order to get a complete readout go to "Buffer -> Options" and select "Whole Buffer"9. Then Device -> Read, then File -> Save Buffer and save it to something like

USERNAME_bricked_vX_XX.hex

10. Upload this file to Support.OSVR.com in a support ticket with the subject “Bricked HDK Firmware dump” and describe what you were doing when the OSVR HDK got bricked.

11. To replace the firmware, we need to go to File -> Load HEX File and point it to the firmware file on your desktop.

12. Press “Run” on the left side of FLIP.13. Once finished, do a power cycle of your HDK by removing all cables for 10 seconds, then

plugging them back in.14. Your device should be up and running again, screw in the bottom screws again and connect the

HDMI. You may have to disable direct mode if direct mode was enabled when the unit bricked.

Troubleshooting:

“Unknown USB” - Try a USB 2.0 port or cable; make sure you have FLIP and the driver installed. (https://deskthority.net/wiki/Flip-USB).
