Evidence of your performance must be collected and submitted to your assessor via Open Space. This document, the Workplace Assessment Portfolio Part 3 is where activities 9-13 are outlined with instructions on how to collect evidence.

2. Portfolio Information Your Open Colleges Workplace Assessor will talk to your Workplace Supervisor about all the tasks in each activity. Your supervisor will confirm that you have completed each task according to the task instructions, and so you need to ensure your supervisor witnesses each task as you complete them. However, Activity 13 does not need to be completed in the workplace, and does not need to be witnessed by your supervisor. For activity 13, you will need a smartphone or tablet capable of recording video.

Once all tasks have been completed, submit your video(s) by: Using the video feature or uploading a copy of the completed video(s) through the upload link in OpenSpace; OR, if you encounter any difficulties uploading your video, please click on this link for further instructions  It is important that you retain a copy of your completed work.

Task 1

Scenario A

You are a disability support worker at CareShore. It is late afternoon, and you have been asked to let the residents know that dinner service is going to start in 10 minutes. You enter the activity area of the facility, where a number of residents are engaged in various activities.

Reg, a relatively recent arrival at CareShore, is playing a card game on his own at a table. You enter the activity room, and announce to the residents “good afternoon everyone, I’m just letting you know it’s time to start packing up your things because dinner service is going to start in about 10 minutes”.

All of the other residents apart from Reg start to pack up their things. Reg is glaring at you and is visibly upset to be asked to stop playing his game. Reg starts to shout that he doesn’t want to stop playing yet. Reg lunges half-heartedly towards you, as if to push you away.

What do you do next?

Ask a friend, family member or colleague to play the part of Reg. Ask ‘Reg’ to set the scene and start shouting at you.

You should demonstrate at least four (4) steps you would take to de-escalate the situation, using a person-centred approach.

Once you have recorded your role play with ‘Reg’, move to Task 2.

Task 2

You have attempted to de-escalate the situation with Reg, but he has become even more angry. He now starts shouting louder, and yells “I WILL HIT YOU!”. Reg makes another attempt to lunge at you and his body language and tone of voice are very threatening and aggressive.

What do you do next?

Ask a friend, family member or colleague to play the part of Reg. Ask ‘Reg’ to set the scene and start shouting at you.

You should demonstrate at least four (4) steps you would take to de-escalate the situation, using a person-centred approach.
