TASK-1

SOCIAL NETWORKING SERVICES

A social networking service is a platform to build social relations among people who, for example, share interests, activities, backgrounds or real-life connections. A social network service consists of a representation of each user (often a profile), his social links and a variety of additional services. Social networking is a web-based service that allows individuals to create a public profile, to create a list of users with whom to share connection and view the connections within the system. Most social network services are web-based and provide means for users to interact over the Internet, such as e-mail and instant messaging. Social network sites are varied and they incorporate new information and communication tools such as mobile connectivity, photo/video/sharing and blogging. Online community services are sometimes considered as a social network service, though in a broader sense. Social network service usually means an individual-centred service whereas online community services are group-centred. Social networking sites allow users to share ideas, pictures, posts, activities, events and interests with people in their network. The main types of social networking services are those that contain category places (such as former school year or classmates), means to connect with friends (usually with self-description pages) and a recommendation system linked to trust. Popular methods now combine many of these, with American-based services such as Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn and Twitter widely used worldwide.

TASK-3

SCHOOL LIFE

Speaker 1 : School life is a very important part of one’s life, because it provides opportunity for study and discipline. Besides these, school life is a preparatory stage for entering public life. Teachers act as the guides and guardians to guide them on the right path. In school, teachers try to remove the evils from the students by sowing some seeds of good qualities in them.

Speaker 2 : School plays an important role in widening the outlook of students. Virtues such as perseverance, sincerity, truthfulness, tolerance, discipline and obedience developed in pupils. School provides opportunity to the students to be disciplined. They show discipline in classroom, playground, hostel, and library and at other places.

Speaker 3 : School life is generally a period of youth. In school, all the students read in a spirit of togetherness. They forget their joys and sorrows. They read together, play together and sit together. In these days their minds contain some youthful dreams which come true as they grow in age.

Speaker 4 : School is the right place for the fulfillment of the youthful desires. Students take part in games and sports, drama, essay competition, song and debate competitions etc. School also provides the foundation for budding poets, scientists, writers, doctors, engineers, painters and musicians. It is in school that the students enjoy the affection of their teachers.

Speaker 5 : In library, debate class and in competitions, students get proper scope to improve their knowledge and style. Above all, in examinations they try to show their brilliant performance. Thus, they get opportunity to expand their activity. School has definitely a healthy influence upon students. But some students indulge in bad company and get away from the impact of their teachers. Those students miss the charm of their school life.

Task 4

SPEECH ON “IMPORTANCE OF CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES IN SCHOOL”

Co-curricular activities in school are of tremendous value, as they help in providing opportunities

for better understanding of our cultural heritage and traditions, for example, activities like

dramatics, folk songs, dance, folk music, exhibitions and celebration of various religious and social

festivals provide better knowledge and understanding of our culture, foster cultural tastes and

awaken cultural interests among students. Thus, co-curricular activities will help in developing

national and international understanding.

We can concede by saying that co-curricular activities in schools cater to the development of a

child’s entire personality, draw out the latent powers of children of different temperaments,

supplement academic work, develop social and civic sense. Without these activities, students

would be mere book-worms.

These activities are really important as they have a potential of developing the intellect of a student

which is always not possible with theoretic procedures. When effective, these activities provide a

practical hands-on approach to the students which provide similar experiences which they will

face in the outside world. Such experiences go a long way in producing multi-faceted personalities

which, in due course of time may bring honour to the country as well. Students have a right to a

broad education. A wide range of experiences prepare students better for the future, especially in

today’s uncertain world. Student minds aren’t mature enough to ascertain what’s good and what’s

bad for them? Their decisions may be influenced by peer pressure etc., but at the same time these

activities should not be forced upon. Co-curricular activities need to be more refined, varied and

interesting so as to be widely accepted and successful. A successful co-curriculum builds links

between the school and the wider community, bringing local enthusiasts in to work with students,

and sending students out to work on community projects. Many children have talents in all sorts of

different areas, and it is wrong to force them to specialize too early. A career is not the only part of

an adult’s life – school needs to make sure they have interests and skills that will help them in their

family and leisure lives too. Through equal balancing of academic and co-curriculum, the students

have the chance to exercise their rights and the opportunity to be multi-talented.

10 ®Jiwan Basic General English ( )COMMUNICATION SKILLS

1. Co-curricular activities in school help the child

b. in running away from studies

c. to become a good professional doctor.

2. Without co-curricular activities, students would be

a. mere book-worms.

TASK-3

COMMENTS OF PAKISTANI CRICKETERS AFTER WINNING THE MATCH, ASIA CUP, HELD ON 3 MARCH 2014

Mohammad Hafeez : “First of all, thanks to almighty Allah. The way we won that Speaker 1 :game was terrific. The role given to me was that of a Number 3 batsman. Things are working for me and I am happy. Whenever there is a left hander, the captain calls me to bowl with the new ball. I am happy to do it for Pakistan. We lost four early wickets but we were looking to play normal cricket. At the end, Shahid Afridi with his magnetic episode finished it off. I thank the crowd and dedicate this win for the Pakistan people.”

Mohammad Hafeez is the Man of the Match for his all-round show: 2-38 with the ball followed by a composed 75 with the bat.

Misbah : “It was an important win for us. It was labelled that we were bad chasers. Speaker 2 : It was a wonderful partnership between Hafeez and Maqsood and then Afridi finished it off. There was dew, we wanted to take it to the finish. Afridi is a player who can hit 2-3 sixes in an over. I am not thinking about the final. We are just thinking about the next game. That is also important.”

Kohli : “The idea was not to let them get used to one bowler in particular. I think Speaker 3 : the guys put in a great effort and I am proud of that. I had left Mishra for the last few overs, I held back Jadeja as well. Ashwin was confident of bowling the last over and that’s why Shami and Bhuvi bowled ahead of him. We were a few runs short on that wicket. 20-30 short, 260-270 would have been competitive. It’s been a learning curve for me as a captain. It’s a young team and it’s pleasing to see the effort.” Just when India were tightening the noose around, Maqsood and Hafeez masterminded a pragmatic stand worth 87 to keep Pakistan afloat. Bhuvi engineered a double strike form in the penultimate over but Shahid Afridi’s BOOM BOOM fireworks saw Pakistan wrap up the win with back to back biggies. Do stick around fellas, Presentation to follow shortly…

14 ®Jiwan Basic General English ( )COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Afridi : “I was really under pressure. I was not doing well in the last two games, I Speaker 4 :played bad shots as well. Expectation was high on me, thankfully I delivered. The captain was always talking to me about playing myself in. This time I tried to take my time and it worked. The thing is we all know whenever we are playing against India, it’s always a great occasion for us. I am very happy. Gul was talking a lot with me. The thing was that we just wanted to rotate strike. When we arrived here, our goal was to win this competition. It’s very important for us, we all know where we are standing at the moment. We thank the Bangladeshi crowd as well for supporting us.”

B Kumar : OUT! Gul falls! Fuller in length on middle, Gul swings it down the Speaker 5 :ground. Rahane at long on takes a really good catch diving forward. That came off the toe end of the bat. India just about in the match, by a whisker!

You will hear comments of Pakistani cricketers after winning the Asia Cup match held on 3 March 2014. Read the given statements, then listen to the comments and match each statement A–G to each speaker 1–5. There are two statements you do not need. You will hear the recordings twice.

A. Mohammad Hafeez is the Man of the Match for his all-round show: 2-38 with the ball followed by a composed 75 with the bat.

B. Ashwin was confident of bowling the last over and that’s why Shami and Bhuvi bowled ahead of him.

C. That came off the toe end of the bat. India just about in the match, by a whisker!

D. We thank the Bangladeshi crowd as well for supporting us.”

E. Sri Lanka edged home in the tournament opener, the spirited Afghans floored Bangladesh yesterday.

F. There was dew, we wanted to take it to the finish. Afridi is a player who can hit 2-3 sixes in an over.

G. India lost the match again facing defeat from Pakistan team and presented a hopeless performance.

TASK-4

PRESENTATION ON HOW TO BOOK AN AIR TICKET!

Most travel sites operate in a following manner.

1. They will prompt you to enter a destination and a specific date of travel.

2. A list will be generated showing results across a number of different airlines. The results can usually be organized by price. Price may be affected by a number of variables including the number of stops made, the destination or departure airport and the proximity to the date.

3. Once you’ve selected the desired flight, you will be diverted to the payment section. The booking itself will require a valid credit card and you will be prompted to enter the credit card number and expiration date in the payment section.

15®Jiwan Basic General English ( )COMMUNICATION SKILLS

4. You will also be asked for pertinent personal information such as a full name, and possibly, a passport number for international travel. Make sure you remember to bring the credit card used to pay for your reservation to the airport with you. You may be asked to produce the credit card if the reservation is irretrievable or to prove identity.

5. You will most likely be asked if you’d like an e-mail confirmation to be sent to you. Choose to generate this e-mail confirmation because it will come in handy and will be needed as reference of the details of your reservation. In addition, an e-mail confirmation can be printed and used at airport self-service kiosk for check-in. This step will save your time and irritation of standing in long queues.

6. Solidify your travel dates. Oftentimes, advance booking will ensure that you will get to choose from a variety of routes and the most affordable fares.

7. Start checking up on fares early. Even if you only have a general idea of when the air travel will take place, it is a good idea to start shopping around. If you plan on flying during a major break period such as Christmas or New Year, the proximity of your travel date to the hectic, heavy traffic days can affect your chances of being bumped, missing a flight or just having an unpleasant travel experience. Book early!

If you don’t want to worry about the planning component, call a travel agency. Flights to different countries are sometimes operated by multiple airlines and schedules and routes change frequently. Having a travel agent responsible for the reservation is a safer idea.

You will hear a presentation on how to book an air ticket. Read the given questions, listen to the presentation and choose A or B or C for each question. You will hear the recording twice.

1. The list will be generated showing results ___________________.

a. across a number of different airlines.

COMMENTARIES ON DIFFERENT BOWLS IN THE NEW ZEALAND VS INDIA TEST SERIES, 2ND SERIES

Boult to Dhawan: 1 run, Dhawan is off the pair. Similar delivery to the one that got Speaker 1 : him in the first innings. Short of a length, angling in, then moving away, dropped into the covers for one.

Southee to Dhawan: no run, Flying Mac takes a screamer and then the elbow hits Speaker 2 :the ground. Driven on to the up, Mc Cullum dives forward at short cover, but the impact of the elbow on the ground pushes the ball out of his hands .

Kiran: “Dhawan here reminds me of Sadgopan Ramesh, the opener for India Speaker 3 : during the late 90s. Very little footwork and throw the bat at anything slightly wide and full. The backfoot goes back instead of the front foot going forward while trying to drive. Looks quite elegant when it works but is a very high risk method.”

Southee to Vijay: OUT, lucky lucky breakthrough for New Zealand. This is a Speaker 4 : length ball well down leg, Vijay has been scoring fours off them easily, but he is caught down leg this time. He doesn’t seem happy with the decision because he thinks it has gone off the pad. However, HotSpot shows a faint smidgeon on the bat too.

Sodhi to Pujara: No run, nearly there. He has drawn Pujara forward, made him Speaker 5 : play the angle, and then turned it appreciable to beat the outside edge. Not many spinners do that to Pujara.

You will hear five commentaries on different bowls in the New Zealand vs India test series, 2nd series. Read the given statements, then listen to the commentaries and match each statement A–G to each speaker 1–5. There are two statements you do not need. You will hear the recordings twice.

TASK-4

NARRATIVE ON CORRUPTION IN INDIA

Corruption is today a world-wide phenomenon. In our own country, some people in high positions have been charged for it.

A corrupt person is termed immoral, dishonest and unscrupulous in his dealings. His disregard for honesty, righteousness and truth results in his alienation from society. He is treated with contempt. But as erosion of values leads to decadence, remedies for the social malaise remain elusive, and so no amount of contempt can eradicate corruption which is a symptom of decadence.

Corruption is the most virulent when crises everywhere threaten the very existence of the society and the faith in life is shaken. It has always been there like tie leech, but when the system grows weaker and the boat flounders, it gets bolder and drains its victims of the last drops of their blood.

The older the system the weaker it grows and fails to solve the riddles of life that grows more complex every day. So men lose faith in it and let it drift down. At this point, corruption takes over and plunges the entire society.

The flourishing black market in essential commodities, adulteration of even baby-food, bribery, fraud and economic, political and administrative manipulations with an eye on earning profits has brought untold misery to the people.

One would say the corruption in India has an ancient lineage; it is sanctified by tradition. The author of the Arthashastra made some remarks on government officials of his time which are relevant even today: “Just as it is impossible not to taste the honey or the poison that finds itself at the tip of the tongue, so it is impossible for a government servant not to eat up at least a bit of the king’s revenue. These in the postwar world became only bolder while eating up government money and accepting bribes.

Today, when India is free, these officials representing all government departments are very close to the most corrupt businessmen who are too unscrupulous to let any opportunity of amassing profits slip. This collusion broadens the base of the vicious circle and corruption spreads ‘like wild fire to engulf the entire society.
