Upon arrivaltoMoorea lsland (pronounced MO,oh,ray'ah)in the heart of French

Polynesia,you willjmmediately be awestruck by itsnatural beauty.Jagged peaks

surrounded by lush greenery and encir(ledbythedeepblueoftheoceanandskyare

everyone's dream of Polynesia.

The early Polynesians named thisisland Tahiti･iti,meaning the little6sh of Tahiti.lt has

also been known as Aimeo, and Fe‘e.ltisonly in recenl times that the island was named

Moorea. Moorea isa rugged mountainous island.｢oughly triangularin shape, measuring

approximately 10 miles (16 km)on each side.T11elush tropical vegetation, whitesandy

beaches and small villagesspread along the (oast make the 37mile(6okm)drive along the

island‘s(:oastalroad most pleasurable. The coral reef surrounding the i5land is

approximately half to three quarters of a mile from shore.

The crystalwaters of the lagoon o汗er excellent snorkeling and divin＆aswellas manyother

types of water sports. Geologically,the island isan an(ientvol(ano whose northem side has

been down faulted by the sea. Cook's Bay and opunohu Bay on the north coast are old

craters taken by the sea. Both Bays have been used by many filmmakers as backdrops for

their productions.

Over mi‖ions of years the island has eroded into (liffsand jagged peaks. Perhaps the most

famous peak to be seen on the island isthat of Mouaroa, better known to many as

Mitchener's “BaliHai". Were(ommendavisjt to Belvedere vista point, whi(h ofrers

specta(ular views of the magni6cent bays, peaks and valleysof the north side.
