Why study English for Hospitality? • Ideal preparation for employment in the hospitality industry • Students already working in the hospitality industry can upgrade their skills • Unique focus on realistic, industry-specific terminology used in the hospitality industry • Experienced teachers and a real hospitality training environment • Solid foundation skills for further study • New Zealand’s first NZQA-approved hospitality English programme • Students enrolled on the full 12-week programme can use our Redfish recruitment service to get a work placement Programme Structure The course is structured into the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students will be assessed on both general language skills and their ability to communicate in hospitality-specific terms. In addition to classroom-based study, students will be able to discover more about the hospitality industry through field trips, guest industry speakers, and participation in cultural events. Fern and NZMA students share the Anzac Avenue building so you will also be able to take advantage of the realistic training environment of NZMA’s Auckland Central Academy. Facilities include modern cocktail-training bars and a fully operational café with a front and back-of-house training area. Topics studied Week 1: Introduction to the Hospitality Industry Week 2: Customer Service & Courtesy English Week 3: Oral Communication & Telephone Manners Week 4: Cultural Diversity & Presentation Skills Week 5: Food & Beverage - Bar Service Week 6: Food & Beverage - Restaurant Service Week 7: Food & Beverage - Coffee & Café Service Week 8: Food & Beverage – Nutrition & Food Safety Standards Week 9: Hotel Operations - Housekeeping and Room Service Week 10: Hotel Operations - Front Office & Guest Services Week 11: Written Communication for Business Week 12: Employment Skills for Hospitality Programme Duration • Classes start every Monday • 12 week programme, though can be studied for shorter periods Full Time 20 hrs per week + optional 4 hrs per week conversation class or self-study class Note: The full 12 weeks must be successfully completed in order to receive the NZMA Achievement Certificate. Students who successfully study less than 12 weeks will receive an NZMA Completion Certificate for those modules. Entry Requirements Students must: • Be 16 years of age or older, AND • Hold minimum of IELTS 4.5 or equivalent, OR • Achieve the required level on the Fern English Language grading exercise Tuition cost NZ$350 per week.
