Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time
(Readings: Job 7:1-4, 6-7 — 1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23 — Mark 1:29-39) All Things to All — St. Paul writes, “I have become all things to all.” All good speakers know that they have to adapt their style and even their content to their audience. A political candidate tries to address the
concerns of the locals. It wouldn’t make sense to focus on farmers’ issues, for example, while campaigning in major cities, where personal and public safety might be more on people’s minds. When you look at dif-ferent Marian Apparitions, this kind of adaptation becomes obvious. The words Mary speaks, the way she is dressed, and the witnesses she chooses are not arbitrary or by chance. At La Salette she wept. At Pont-main (1871, also in France), she smiled. St. Paul also writes, “Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel.”
Jesus says, “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.” Mary at La Salette says, “Well, my children, you will make this known to all my people.” It was not even necessary for Mélanie and Maximin to understand what they saw and heard. Their role was to share the
experience and leave it to others to interpret it. This is true, to a certain degree, even of preachers, who are aware that their own perspective is limited and their congregation is diverse. Preacher and congregant alike need to “translate” the Gospel text for their time and place. At a meeting of “La Salette Laity” which took place on the Holy Mountain in France, the participants were given an interesting exercise—to imagine that Our Lady of La Salette appeared, not in 1846, but today, and to prepare a drawing of the setting in which
she would come and of the clothes she (and the two children) would be wearing. Discussion of the drawing included how the message would be different. The point was to see how La Salette applies to the world we know. Mary appeared a certain way and said certain things. The best way to make it known may well be to
“translate” that into the images and words of our own time and place, for “all” her people.

invitados a asistir.
—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
