Message from the Padre

Our Gospel this weekend from Luke is about the Good Samaritan, and Jesus intro-

duces three men: the Priest, the Levite and the Good Samaritan. But there is a fourth charac-

ter in this parable that is equally important like the Good Samaritan and that is the man who

was going to Jericho from Jerusalem who fell victim to robbers and left half-dead. But not a single clue is offered to us as to who

he was, or what he did. Maybe that is why people overlook this man and focus more on the Good Samaritan. Yes, most of us re-

member the goodness of the Samaritan, but how about this nameless man, the migrant…who was traveling from Jerusalem to Jeri-

cho.

My dear friends, this week we are called not only to remember the Good Samaritan, but also to reflect on the life of

this nameless and voiceless traveler who mirrors “the immigrants” of today…the nameless immigrants who have no claim of kin-

ship or obligation to us but to whom we are called to open our heart and show mercy. Whatever their legal status, the vast majority

of our immigrants today are here seeking work as poverty impels them to flee their homelands and to seek a better life for them-

selves and their families.

Yes, the Catholic Church in our country has always been a Church of immigrants, and we are called to pray not only

for all immigrants, but also to pray for a positive movement toward a just and comprehensive immigration reform. Our vision as

Christians must include a broader understanding of the plight of immigrants in our country… always keeping in mind the teaching

of the church with regards to human dignity...at the same time conscious of our responsibility to protect and defend the security of

all citizens of this nation.

My dear brothers and sisters, reforming our nation’s immigration system is a matter of fundamental and social jus-

tice. It is a humanitarian issue with moral implications, but we need to remember that all human beings – regardless of their na-

tionality, race, creed or status – are “coheirs and members of the same Body of Christ.” Yes, it is true that the Catholic social

teaching recognizes the right of a sovereign state to control and protect its borders and does not condone unlawful entry of undocu-

mented immigrants...but at the same time, the Church also upholds the right to migrate for just reasons and recognizes it as a God given right...which means that while the sovereign state may impose reasonable limits on immigration, the common good is not

served when the basic human rights of the individual are violated.

So this weekend, Christ wants us to take a good look on how we treat our neighbors, who are not only the people next

door, but they are the countless strangers, the nameless undocumented immigrants, the voiceless migrant workers, the children who are being exploited, the travelers who are oppressed, and all the countless victims of violence, prejudice and discrimination. These

are just some of the few of our neighbors of today. They are the strangers who need our brotherly love…with whom we need to

share…not simply a cup of water and a crust of bread, but also the Mercy and Love of Christ.

Fifteenth Sunday in

Ordinary Time Deuteronomy 30: 10-14

Luke 10: 25-37

The first reading today sets the

stage for our Gospel story of the Good Samaritan. Moses tells the people that God’s com-

mand is within each heart. As we hear the story of the

Good Samaritan, it is good for us to realize that acting mercifully toward our neighbor is built into the human

heart; all we have to do is act on it. Let us then ask God

for the courage to do what we already know how to do.

Natural Family Planning Awareness Week

Is Coming Soon!

Isn’t Natural Family Planning just like Contraception for Catho-lics? NO! There is a BIG difference between Natural Family Plan-ning and contraception!! Contraception actively employs a drug, de-

vice or surgical procedure to inhibit or block the natural effects of the sexual act. It always strives to separate the bodily union of the man and woman from any possible procreative effects of that union. NFP teaches mutual respect of the spouses, always drawing them closer together in every way. NFP allows spouses to avoid conception by identifying the naturally occurring infertile times of the woman’s cycle when they have a serious reason to avoid conception…NFP can also help spouses achieve pregnancy, even, in some cases, when there are

significant fertility issues…now that’s REAL family planning! Either way, Natural Family Planning and respects God’s design for married love...On top of all that, it’s free, “organic”, and good for the environ-ment! Be on the lookout for more information about NFP in the bulle-tin over the next few weeks leading up to Natural Family Planning Awareness Week, July 24-30. For more information about NFP educa-tion in our area, contact Peg Hensler at the Department of Youth, Mar-riage, and Family Life at [email protected] or call 609-
