Field trip: The Good Green Earth/ Green and Growing (K5-Grade 3)

Grade 3:

Students will learn how to figure how old a tree is.

Students will learn similarities between trees and people.

Students will become familiarized with various plants.

Students will learn how animals use plants.

• Growth rings: an annual formation of wood in plants as they grow (Students will be given cookie trees and asked to see how old it is)

•Brownfield: piece of industrial or commercial property that is abandoned or underused and often environmentally contaminated, especially one considered as a potential site for redevelopment.( type of field Havenwood is built on)

• Galls:An abnormal swelling of plant tissue caused by insects, microorganisms, or external injury. (Students will look for ways that animals use plants for homes and food in an outside activity)

• Interdependence: mutually dependent; depending on each other. (Students will understand through an activity that animals and plants depend on each other in the Brownfield.)

• Organism: a form of life considered as an entity; an animal, plant, fungus, protistan or moneran. (Students will learn that plants and animals are organisms)

Students will visit fields and parks during their life and they should understand what a Brownfield is.

Students should understand that plants and animals depend on each other for survival.

Students should learn how to determine the age of trees.
