Episode 1

LOOK DEEPER INTO THE CONCEPTS, NATURE AND PURPOSES OF THE CURRICULUM

Name of FS StudentAlyssa Campita__________________________CourseBachelor of Elementary EducationYear & Section III - C Resource Teacher Mam Ruby Ruth Apple Abanto Signature _________Cooperating SchoolCNSC College of Education Laboratory School Abao Campus My TargetAt the end of this activity, I should be able to explain the concepts, nature and purposes of the curriculum and how these are translated into the school community. My Tools Accomplish the H Chart. Interview an administrator or a faculty member. Get their ides/views of the curriculum. Write the differences on both sides and the similarities at the center and then write your personal insights.

Progressive CurriculumTraditional Curriculum

*Teacher is expert and information provider*Textbook is key source of information*Focus on facts*Product oriented*Assessment is quantitative*Teacher is guide and facilitator*Sources are varied*Focus on learning inquiry/ quest/ discovery*Process oriented*Assessment is quantitative and qualitativeSimilarities

The role of teacher is importantThere is learning goalsTotal learning experiences

The type of curriculum a school offers is very important. Based on the table above, we can see that the traditional curriculum is far behind from the progressive curriculum. Nowadays, we must go with the flow of 21st century. We must cope up with the changes so our curriculum must improve too so that we can develop the children holistically. As we are in this present generation, we must use the progressive curriculum because it engages students in activities of a higher plane of thinking. My Personal InsightsMy Enriching Activities

If you are to design a curriculum for your own school, what are the things you need to consider? Accomplish the graphic organizer below.

My Analysis1. Why do we need to consider the traditional and progressive points of view of curriculum?Curriculum is the total learning experience. We need to consider each points of curriculum because it is necessary to accomplish the goal of education and to improve points which need to be improved in order to accomplish our objectives.

2. Why is there a need to revise the curriculum from time to time?We need to revise the curriculum from time to time to come up with the changes that take place here in the society and also to be globally competitive. Revision of curriculum is also done to enhance and improve the thinking skills of the students and develop the quality of teaching to reach the vision.

My Reflections/ My InsightsIn narrow sense, curriculum is just the list of subjects taught in schools. But in broader sense, it is not just the subjects but rather the total learning experiences we give to our children. There are many curriculums happening in one school like the written curriculum, achieved, taught, etc. there are many types of it but what is essential is that together they make one curriculum that makes a certain school different from other schools.Abao has 2 curriculums offered in Elementary Department. From grades 1-3 it is K12 while from grades 4-6, the BEC is still the one used. Abao has a very good curriculum: from the teachers to the administrators to the school activities, it has become one of the prestigious schools in Camarines Norte that is why when I become a teacher soon, I want to be competitive or more competent teacher just like the teachers here in Abao.My PortfolioPictures of a traditional school

WHATS THE CURRICULUM MADE OF?

Name of FS StudentAlyssa Campita__________________________CourseBachelor of Elementary EducationYear & Section III - C Resource Teacher Mam Ruby Ruth Apple Abanto Signature _________Cooperating SchoolCNSC College of Education Laboratory School Abao Campus

My Target

At the end of this activity, I should be able to identify the components of the curriculum and curricular approaches.

My Map

For this concept, go through the following steps.

My ToolsFor this Episode, visit a school/university or get a copy of the school brochure. Copy the school/universitys vision, mission and goals on this page.

My Analysis

1. How important is the schools vision, mission and goals in designing the curriculum?

The schools mission vision and goals are very important in designing the curriculum because your curriculum is for the vision of the school. Curricula should revolve around the vision, mission and goals which guide the school.2. What methods and strategies were employed by the school community to realize these goals?

The methods and strategies used to realize the schools goals are through the curriculum, by the learning experiences like day-to-day lessons in the classroom, scholastic activities. Some of the strategies are the planned objectives, the instructional materials to be used; the multitude of teaching methods and educational activities that enhances learning. Among the methods are the inquiry approaches, constructivist and other emerging strategies that complement new theories in teaching and learning.3. How did the students manifest that they have internalized their vision, mission and goals?

Here in Abao as they enter the gate and see the tarpaulins hanged, I can say that they internalized their mission, vision and goals because these tarpaulins show the triumphs of students here. And also, they manifest it the way they interact, act and speak. A student even at very young age appears to be intelligent and knowledgeable enough.

My Reflections/ My Insights Curriculums are made of the objectives, subject matter, methods and strategies and the evaluation approaches. Each of it is distinct but is interrelated to each other. All the things that make up the curriculum are supplementary to realize the goals of the school. When I become a teacher, I will give my best to follow the curriculum so that I will be able to provide students with total learning experiences and also to prove everyone that I am a product of a good institution.

Episode 3

WHATS NEW IN TEACHING AND LEARNING?

Name of FS StudentAlyssa Campita__________________________CourseBachelor of Elementary EducationYear & Section III - C Resource Teacher Mam Ruby Ruth Apple Abanto Signature _________Cooperating SchoolCNSC College of Education Laboratory School Abao Campus

My TargetAt the end of this activity, I should be able to discuss the teaching and learning process.

My Map

In order to reach my target I should do the following steps using the given pyramid.

My Tools

For this episode, I will use the activity from given below.

Interview a teacher. Ask if they perform these series of actions in the teaching process.

Observe a class, record the situations where these behavioral learning theories are applied in real classroom work.

Behavioral Learning Theories emphasize observable behavior such as new skills, knowledge or attitudes which can be demonstrated

Mam Apple assigned students to read selections in front of class. At first some of the students are shy and talk softly but with Mams guidance and encouragement that they can do it, the students became good in reading, he now reads loudly and fluently.

Cognitive Learning Theories unobservable mental processes are used to learn and remember new information or acquire skills

When the students dont know the meaning of a certain word, Mam Apple asks other students the meaning of it, or shes the one who gives the meaning of it. Then the students can learn new word.

Discovery Learning individual learns from his discovery of the environment

The discovery learning happens here when a student encounters a difficult word then Mam Apple gave clues to the word so that the student will understand the word, or will be able to give context to the word.

Reception Learning - learners are directly involved in their own learning

Reception learning happens here because Mam Apple provides them experiences by letting them go in front. They are directly involved because the instruction or the lesson proper is active. They are directly involved because they are learning by doing.

My Analysis

1. Explain why teaching and learning give life and meaning to the curriculum.

Teaching and learning gives life to the curriculum because it is the actual implementation of the curriculum and the curriculum is nonsense if we are not going to implement it. Teaching and learning complement and supplement each other. Teaching and learning tests the curriculum if it is effective. The value placed in teaching will reap the same value in learning, thus a good curriculum can be judged by the kind of teaching and the quality of learning derived from it.

2. Discuss why the deluge of information poses a great challenge to both teaching and learning.

The deluge of information poses a great challenge to both teaching and learning because the curriculum seems to be overloaded; too many subjects to cover, too many topics to teach. Sometimes the curriculum is fragmented or is simply boxed. Unfortunately, the learners life is not compartmentalized.

My Reflections/ My InsightsI LIKE TEACHING BECAUSE...To teach is to make someone learn. It is the greatest and noblest profession of all. When we teach we are able to share knowledge and to be a role model for them. I like teaching because I have a passion for it and I want to see my students learn and apply what they have learned. I like teaching I know it is my calling. I want to be a teacher because I want to be an inspiration to my students. My Portfolio Pictures of the teaching and learning process

LETS CRAFT THE CURRICULUM

Name of FS StudentAlyssa Campita__________________________CourseBachelor of Elementary EducationYear & Section III - C Resource Teacher Mam Ruby Ruth Apple Abanto Signature _________Cooperating SchoolCNSC College of Education Laboratory School Abao Campus

My TargetAt the end of this activity, I should be able to differentiate the different curriculum design models.

My MapTo reach my target, I should do these steps.

Observe a class.1

2

Identify the curriculum design used by schools.

Reflect and write my insights/learning gained from the activities.3

My Analysis

1. Examine the Basic Education Curriculum. What aspects do you want to modify. Why?I think I want to modify the science and health because it is so basic and activities or learning experiences for Grade 6 are limited. It lacks lesson and should include more about general science. Students nowadays are advanced and active so should the curriculum.2. What curriculum models do you prefer? Why?I prefer Learner-Centered Design. A progressive curriculum is student centered and it is the center of the educative process. In this design, learning is active rather than passive, environment is child-friendly, a child gets many experiences and learns by doing, learners are empowered to shape their own learning from the different opportunities given by the teacher, and there is an emergence of multiple intelligences because of the different learning centers. A Learner Centered Design curriculum also targets the development of self with positive concept.

Subject Centered Problem-Center Design Model Design Model compartmentalized and sorted. Here, the learnings are just in the short term memory Learner-CenteredDesign ModelLearner-CenteredDesign ModelMy Reflections/ My Insights

It focuses on the content of the course. Here, the only important thing is the instruction and the textbook. It is more of quantitative rather qualitative. Although it is the oldest and most common design, learning in this kind of design is

Here, the content cuts across the subject boundaries and are based on the needs, concerns, and abilities of the students, I think it is too affective. It only focuses on the affective side of the discussion.

What do I like best in these curriculum designs?

This I think is the combination of the two. And this is the one I like. It is student centered and this emphasis is very strong in elementary level since students nowadays are very active, so we must be steps ahead from them. In this design, it stresses the whole person and the integration of thinking, feeling and doing. The 3 domains of learning are interconnected here.

TELL ME YOUR FEATURES

Name of FS StudentAlyssa Campita__________________________CourseBachelor of Elementary EducationYear & Section III - C Resource Teacher Mam Ruby Ruth Apple Abanto Signature _________Cooperating SchoolCNSC College of Education Laboratory School Abao Campus My TargetAt the end of this activity, I should be able to enumerate the six (6) features of a curriculum.

My MapTo get on task, I should know the answers to these questions.

teaches?do teachers teach?do teachers teach?do teachers teach?much of the teachers?lessons were learned?do we teach?

My ToolsInterview a teacher in the school you visited and inquire how they have utilized their parents as school partners in education.

According to Mam Apple, since there is no Parent Teacher Association (PTA) in the school anymore, the parents are regularly voluntary visiting their children in the school.Parents also are very involved in school activities and are very supporting. They follow up the lesson of their children at homes and they provided materials which are not given by the school. They provide permission for their children to participate in school activities. My Analysis

1. As a future teacher, I need to know and understand the six (6) features of the curriculum because...

I need to understand the features of curriculum because it will help me to do my job better because I will know my roles as a teacher. I cannot give the students all the knowledge if there is one component of the curriculum missing. Teachers are also the curriculum writers that are why we must understand the features of it to be able to make the curriculum worthy.

My Reflections/ My InsightsThe 6 features of a curriculum are the learners who are the center of curriculum, the teachers who are the curriculum developers and implementers, the administrators as the curriculum managers, the parents as supporters, community members as resources, and the stakeholders for the implementation.I realized that these 6 features are essential in any curriculum design, and they complete each other. When I finally become a teacher, I will do my best to understand the learners, talk to parents, do the tasks given by administrators, invite some resource speakers and give students a distinct learning experience. Before, I thought that after a curriculum has written it can be implemented by anyone. Now, through this episode, I realized that there are many persons in curriculum implementation and each has its role to play. Some have direct involvement, and others have indirect influence.

THE WH- OF THE CURRICULUM

Name of FS StudentAlyssa Campita__________________________CourseBachelor of Elementary EducationYear & Section III - C Resource Teacher Mam Ruby Ruth Apple Abanto Signature _________Cooperating SchoolCNSC College of Education Laboratory School Abao Campus

My Target

At the end of this activity, I should be able to identify the contribution of students in enhancing and assessing the curriculum.

My Map

To attain my target, I should do the following:

1. Identify the various implementations of the2. State the role of curriculum. technology in3. Explain thedelivering the different ways ofcurriculum assessing the.curriculum..

My Portfolio

Write an acronym for curriculum assessment.

My Tools

1. Explain ways on how to effectively implement the curriculum. Interview the school administrator/ principal.

2. Visit the Learning Resource Center of a school. Interview the media/learning resource staff. How does technology help in delivery the curriculum?

Technology in education makes the delivery of lessons more effective, efficient and humanizing. Technology upgrades the quality of teaching and learning and gives importance to student-centered and holistic learning. 3. Interview a faculty member or an administrator. Ask what criteria they use in evaluating their school curriculum.

According to Mam Apple, there are evaluation sheets given at the end of the school year. There are also IPCR that are being evaluated to monitor whether the teachers have complied with their committed performances.

My Reflections/ My InsightsTechnology has a great role in curriculum implementation. Besides, we are now living in the 21st century so there is really a must that we uplift our education through the use of technology. Technology integration enhances teaching-learning process because it provides variety of lessons. For example, the internet is an extension of the library. There is a need to provide students information that forms a coherent whole so learning will end up effectively. FS4Exploring the CurriculumFIELD STUDY

Episode 7

WHATS NEW IN THE CURRICULUM?

Name of FS StudentAlyssa Campita__________________________CourseBachelor of Elementary EducationYear & Section III - C Resource Teacher Mam Ruby Ruth Apple Abanto Signature _________Cooperating SchoolCNSC College of Education Laboratory School Abao Campus

My TargetAt the end of this activity, I should be able to discuss different curricular issues and concerns. My Map

To attain my target, I should do the following:

My Enriching Activities

Select one innovation and complete the discussion web below. Interview Education students to get their ideas on curricular innovations.

NOYES

There are many activities

K-12CurriculumLearning is active

There are always modules to answer

There are great motivation each lesson

There are pretest and posttest to see

The amount of knowledge a student has

gained

Focuses on specialization

Provides affordable education to poor

families

Some students feel tired about the

bombardment of school projects and

the lots of modules they have to

answer

Some teachers are not that knowledgeable

School materials and facilities are not yet prepared for innovation, before they innovate the curriculum, they should innovate the facilities first.

My ConclusionsCurriculum managers and educational experts are always looking for better ways to achieve better learning through teaching. However, since curriculum innovations seemed to be difficult for many, issues and concerns have been raised about curricular innovations. The newness of the idea to the users raises issues which need to be addressed. Certain aspects need to be clarified in order to overcome the attitude and feelings that create some concerns. Some of the curricular issues and concerns are the poor academic performance of learners, the deprived instructional materials, computers, overcrowded classrooms, some innovations are not communicated, some teachers are so tired and not motivated, lack of regular monitoring and evaluation about the performance, and many other more. There must be a fast-tracking of textbook, re-training of teachers, more buildings, provided computer sets and other technology related equipment the DepEd should provide to make a curriculum more effective. In the installation of the new curriculum or innovation in education, all stakeholders should be involved. This participatory process provides a sense of ownership and motivation to all stakeholders. In so doing, each one will make sure that the result of the innovation will be positive.

CONCLUSION

First, I thought of this subject as a one-unit requirement to this course, but that is not until I was in immersion/field already. I myself witnessed what happens in a 4 corner classroom that made me excited on my profession. And that made me realize that this subject is beneficial, essential and important not only as a requirement but also because it gives us an idea of what work we are into so that we will become an effective teacher.I personally gained a lot from this Field Study. I learned from the teachers the real things that happen in a school. I saw the theories I learned being applied in actual school, I saw the connections of theories, of child growth, and etc because of this. And it makes me feel that I am one step closer to being an effective teacher.Having learned the curriculum and other curriculum that happens in a school, I wondered what type of teacher I will become. I hope to be a teacher in a child-friendly and child-centered school. I am excited in executing all the things Ive learned and more excited on being the pilot of my students.
