of nine Tonys, including best musical). Their collaborations The

Apple Tree and The Rothchilds soon followed. Bock and Harnick

were triply honored by being inducted into the Theater Hall of

Fame, receiving the Johnny Mercer Award from the

Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Spirit of American Creativity

Award from the Foundation for a Creative America. But the

“award” that Bock holds near and dear is the honorary Doctor

of Humane Letters degree from the University of Wisconsin. It

was there that he met his wife Patti, and it was there that he

decided to be a composer.

Sheldon Harnick

Lyrics

Sheldon Harnick worked with songwriter Jerry Bock on several

Broadway success stories of the 1950s and '60s, including

Fiddler on the Roof and Fiorello!. Born in Chicago in 1924,

Harnick played violin from an early age and learned about

theater from his acting uncle. During high school he also began

writing comedy material, and after being drafted into the Army

in 1943 he performed on several USO shows. He later studied

at Northwestern, then moved to New York to pursue his

Page 24: Fiddler on the Roof - Portland Center Stage at The Large Print Program.pdf · 2 PORTLANDCENTERSTAGE Presents Fiddler on the Roof Music by Jerry Bock Lyrics by Sheldon Harnick Book

24

songwriting career. He began writing for two early-1950s

shows, New Faces of 1952 and Two's Company, and met

composer Jerry Bock while doing repairs for a show in 1956.

Their first score, the moderate success The Body Beautiful, was

followed by the 1959 hit Fiorello!, Tenderloin (1960) and She

Loves Me (1963). The team's biggest hit, Fiddler on the Roof,

appeared in 1964. Led by "Tradition," "Sunrise, Sunset," "Do

You Love Me?," "Now I Have Everything" and "Matchmaker,

Matchmaker,” the show played more than 3,000 performances

on Broadway and earned dozens of awards including a Tony for

Harnick's book. The Apple Tree and The Rothchilds were worthy

follow ups (though commercial disappointments), and Harnick

recorded an album in 1971 that included performances of his

best lyrics. Friction between Harnick and Bock during The

Rothchilds proved the death knell of their partnership. Harnick

later worked with Richard Rodgers on Rex, and continued to be

involved in the theater world.

SPONSOR STATEMENTS I Fiddler on the Roof

Viridian Reclaimed Wood

Viridian Reclaimed Wood and Portland Center Stage share a

commitment to our beloved City, sustainability, and bringing

amazing stories to life in unexpected ways. Every stick of wood

we reclaim tells a tale of its rough-and-tumble past. Thus, it is

most befitting (and we are honored!) to support PCS’

production of Fiddler on the Roof.

Fiddler on the Roof always has been one of our favorite works.

Part of the brilliance of the play lays in how several generations

of theater goers all seeing the play at the same time each

believes the play represents their views of tradition &

family. We are delighted to be able to help Portland Center

Stage bring this wonderful production of Fiddler on the Roof to

the Portland community.

Hort-Sachs Family

I first saw Fiddler on the Roof in 1965, when the Broadway

touring company came to San Francisco, and I went to see a

performance with my maternal grandparents. I remember

watching the tears stream down my grandfather’s face as Zero

Mostel brought to life the story of Tevye the dairyman. You see,

Tevye’s story was very much like my grandfather’s story, and

there it was, right on the stage, being told with humor, anguish,

and empathy to that cheering Gentile audience. I have since

come to understand that Fiddler on the Roof is not simply a

Jewish story, nor simply an immigrant story. It is an American

story. And more than that, it is a story of human hope that

America, in her best moments, offers as a beacon of inspiration

to the entire world. It is a story about believing in a place where

we can be free to live in ways that serve both the traditions of

our ancestors and the dreams of our descendants. I hope that

this Portland Center Stage production of Fiddler on the Roof will

honor that vision for you, as Fiddler once honored that vision

for my grandfather, Yeshua “Charles” Sachs, to whose memory

I lovingly dedicate this sponsorship.

Helen & Jerry Stern

"Tradition" is the most memorable song in Fiddler on the Roof.

And like many other customs it has become our tradition by

now--and our pleasure to sponsor the Opening Night Musical

for Portland Center Stage and the Gerding Theater.
