CHURCH ETIQUETTE 1. Clothing appropriate for church is appreciated: “Business casual” or better. Beach attire and flip-flops should be avoided. 2. Cell/pagers: please turn off (or set to vibrate for those “on call”). Phone conversations and texting should not take place in church. Please use the vesti-bule or go outside for emergencies. 3. In order to maintain a prayerful atmosphere in church, before and during Mass, it is requested that conversations of any kind be reserved for the vestibule, parish hall or outside. 4. Food/beverages for children may be brought to the church property, but not consumed inside the church. Please use the vestibule, parish hall or out-side for consuming food/beverages. 5. Children of all ages and all temperaments are always welcome at church! During Mass, please immediately bring crying or screaming children to the vestibule or restrooms to tend to their needs. Please do not let children play with keys or other noise-making toys in church. 6. For safety reasons, parents are asked to prevent children from running, and to accompany all chil-dren at all times while on church property. (E.g.: restrooms, vestibule, parish hall, outside, etc.) 7. Faith-based materials to occupy small children during Mass are permitted! However, please reserve gum, crayons, markers, toys, etc., for home. 8. Please try to use restrooms before Mass rather than during Mass. 9. As Mom used to say, “Please leave your space neater than when you found it!” Please return hymnals to the bookracks on the pew backs. Please remove any trash laying around. Please help keep the restrooms in order.

Weekly Pro-Life Update

This month, the Catholic Church in the United States marks the 41st anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision that made abortion the law of the land. In the Diocese of Raleigh, the decision will be marked with the celebration of the annual Diocesan Respect Life Mass at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Raleigh at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2014.

Prior to the Mass, at 7:45 a.m., there will be a prayer service memorializing the unborn chil-dren of Project Rachel participants. During the Mass, the Most Reverend Michael F. Bur-bidge will bestow the Rite of the Blessing of the Child in the Womb, blessing the expectant mothers who are present and their families.

Bishop Burbidge notes that Pope Francis “has reminded us of the priority we must give to our love and care for all our brothers and sisters, especially the unborn, the poor, the sick, the aged and the most vulnerable. In so doing,” the Bishop adds, “we are called to be credible witnesses not only to the compassion of Our Lord, but also to the dignity God has placed in every human person.”

The January 18 Respect Life Mass will be followed by several related events. At 10:30 a.m., the Bishop will celebrate a Mass for teenagers at Sacred Heart Cathedral. That will be followed by the fourth annual Love My Life Rally for the teens on the Cathedral grounds. Last year’s rally attracted more than 700 teens from throughout the Diocese. The teens will then join Bishop Burbidge and faithful from the Diocese at Nash Square in Raleigh for a 1:00 p.m. rally and march sponsored by North Carolina Right to Life.

On Wednesday January 22, 2014, several thousand Catholics from the Diocese will travel to Washington, D.C., to participate in the annual March for Life. Catholics from the Dioceses of Raleigh and Charlotte will first join Bishop Burbidge and Bishop Peter J. Jugis of Char-lotte in the celebration of the annual North Carolina Mass for Life at the Basilica of the Na-tional Shrine at 11:30 a.m.

Following the Mass, the North Carolina contingent will proceed to the National Mall, where they join hundreds of thousands of pro-life advocates on a march past Congress and on to the Supreme Court. Many N.C. Catholics travel to Washington, D.C., by car, while hundreds take buses coordinated by parishes throughout both Dioceses.

On Sunday, January 19th, I will officially open our Diocesan observance of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity with Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral at 10:30 AM and then on Friday, January 2lh, I also invite you to join me and other Chris-tians and their leaders for a special Evening Prayer for Christian Unity, in Our Lady of the Angels Chapel at Saint Francis of Assisi Parish in Raleigh at 7 PM. At a recent audience, Pope Francis said, "Together we can rejoice in the longing for unity which the Lord has awakened in our hearts, and which makes us look with hope to the future. The soul of our journey towards full communion...permits us even now a foretaste of its results, however imperfect. In the measure in which we draw closer to our Lord Jesus Christ in humility of spirit, we are certain to draw closer to one another. And, in the measure in which we ask the Lord for the gift of unity, we are sure that he will take us by the hand and be our guide." (Audience with Lutheran Leadership, October 21,2013) In humility then, let us together draw closer to Our Lord and seek this gift of unity during the week ahead. May God continue to bless our journey towards full com-munion, as we endeavor always to fulfill the prayer of Our Lord, "that all may be one...that the world may believe" (John 17:21).

I am pleased to announce the Third Diocesan Pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC on Saturday, April 5, 2014.

It is my hope that every parish and campus ministry in the Diocese will be represented in this

Pilgrimage. Families, seniors, young people and all individuals in all parishes should be encouraged to join me and their fellow parishioners throughout the Diocese. The Pilgrimage will be a wonderful witness to our faith as we gather around the Shrine of Our Blessed Lady and pray together for our Diocese, for our nation and for peace throughout our world.

I have appointed Father John McGee, OSFS as the chair of our Diocesan Pilgrimage and am

grateful for his dedicated leadership. Father McGee has already formed a planning committee which has begun working on the details of the event.

With the intercession of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, I ask your prayers for

success in this great endeavor for the faithful of our Diocese.
